snow or flurries tomorrow afternoon into early tomorrow evening. 11:00, mostly cloudy. a system over the midwest. it will weaken, but enough moisture. you can see this little band of snow could travel through during the dinner hour. the snow will not come down for more than a half hour to one hour but even then it will be very light. because the ground is so cold, the roadways are so cold from the really chilly temperatures, anything that falls even briefly could stick to the roadways. temperatures, mid 40's. much colder now. the concern again is a couple of isolated slick spots. it does not look like widespread snow, haveeavy snow tomorrow. thursday looks to be a great day and then a bigger system for thursday night, friday into

we will tell you about that. steve: the dot is looking ahead to tomorrow evening and thursday morning when travel could get dicey. operations are under way on roads and major highways. joel is on i-40 with all the details. joel: dot was out here on i-40 this afternoon hitting bridges and overpasses with the saltwater, brine solution. it's ineffective when it drops below 18 degrees so there will be no more brining tonight. let me show you my view. we're on interstate 40 heading eastbound. crews brined briefly this afternoon. they cut it short. the saltwater solution that keeps ice from forming on the roads and dot crews will be back

a death investigation underway at the durham county jail. 29-year-old matthew mccain was found unresponsive in his cell. cpr was performed, but paramedics could not save him. his body has been taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death. you can look for updates tomorrow morning. anna: durham police issue an urgent crime alert after a brutal robbery and beating attic area apartment complex last night. it happened at the amberton at stonewater apartments around 9:30 p.m. the victim was walking from his car when four men attacked him. the suspects took off with his money. he was treated at a hospital and released. durham police warn of a series of robberies targeting small business owners. they happen at various time of the day and night. two to five men are involved and usually wearing masks.

victims get home or a short time after they get home. steve: new details about a murder that has shaken the small community of efland. authorities identify the victim has tevin kendrick. he was found shot to death in a parking lot near the efland-cheeks community center. they will beef up security at the efland-cheeks elementary school. anna: an update on the sinkhole in chatham county. it is growing. we were over the scene today. the road is closed and will likely stay closed for more than a week. authorities tell us a clogged culvert was likely to blame. steve: wake county school members tackling many issues. angelica alvarez breaks it down and she is live at the school

angelica: the only vote that came up was on the enrollment. they voted to put nine cap's -- caps on nine schools and added another six to the list. the new schools are davis drive and apex middle. the enrollment cap date is today. this is not affecting you, but tomorrow it does. school members as capping enrollment is not easy but it is beneficial with the student body. >> this points to a gap between residential construction and schools construction for which we in the opportunity have -- in the community have the opportunity to fix. we will continue to work together to build this schools

angelica: the board discussed possibly putting 12 elementary schools on a year-round track. right now, none of these schools are on the calendar. they asked the board to push any possible calendar changes to the next school year to give everyone time to talk about this. there was a lot of back and forth among board members and how they can get options for lower performing schools. they will further discuss this at the next meeting. i'm angelica alvarez, abc 11 eyewitness news. anna: growing pains for the largest district. governor pat mccrory's office response to the proposal by the president to put every state to pay 26 weeks of unemployment benefits. right now, our state is one of eight that do not give benefits for that long.

the country. the governor's press secretary says president obama is focused on making ways on making people more dependent on the government. they want to help people find jobs. steve: fayetteville city leaders considering changing the market house. many african-american residents say it is connected to slavery. greg has more tonight. greg: the public part of this debate got started in earnest tonight. the big question was how do folks think about it and how do they feel when they look at this historic structure in downtown? there was a lot of back and forth talk about a conversation in three different parts of the city. it is the first time residents could get together and talk about their feelings towards the iconic landmark.

horrible church massacre in south carolina, local naacp officials and local african-americans complained the market house was a divisive symbol because they say it represented slavery. the human relations council was asked by city leaders to get a community consensus on whether it should be removed or included in a new, more modern style. while they were differing opinions, the general consensus is he cannot be wiped out of the city's history. >> i'm very pleased. we were hoping for more people but we had about 30 people tonight with great opinions and that is what we wanted, to hear what they have to say. greg: these community conversations will continue. more public forums are expected later this month. you can check our website. the date is january 28.

temporarily suspending his campaign to help staff members that were in a car accident. carson was in charleston today. the trash happened in iowa. one volunteer was killed and others were hurt. he plans to go to omaha. anna: this was no moving scene for actor jamie foxx. it was real life. a 32-year-old man was speeding in a lay when his car flipped over and burst into flames. foxx and another man used tools to break a window and cut the man out of the seatbelt to freedom from the burning car. the driver was treated at the hospital for serious injuries and was later arrested for driving under the influence. foxx says he does not consider himself a hero. she is one of the leading voices for female education in pakistan and now the 18-year-old malala is spreading her message to fashion.

we will get a little warmer than today but not a lot tomorrow afternoon. nice and clear with good visibility in downtown raleigh coming off the cold highs of 31 at rdu, 30 in roxboro. they got briefly above freezing down towards the sandhills but cold arctic air entrenched over the eastern u.s. for now. 23 at rdu right now. humidity is low. winds are calm so we should settle back down into the mid-to upper teens. 21 in chapel hill and 19 in louisburg. 18 in stamford and 19 in southern pines. lots of sunshine today but cold. you can see the snow in st. louis and marching towards indianapolis and even nashville under winter weather advisory's and wind storm warnings. cincinnati as well. a couple of inches of snow except for you see the winter storm warnings. they could see three to five

the criteria for a winter storm to be issued in georgia is not as serious as areas to the north. just a couple of inches in north georgia but that is enough to prompt a winter storm warning. into the western u.s. it is now into the western u.s. so it is able to get into the the computer models with what the storm will do for us. no worries tonight with anything frozen except yourself. mid-to-upper teens for overnight lows. a mostly cloudy day tomorrow. temperatures mid to upper 30's. towards the evening rush, we see the chance for a brief period of flurries or a light snow shower. through the day, nothing. towards dinner, a little bit of snow. it'll only last about half an hour.

crosses the mountains. the only concern if you get under a heavy burst of snow, it may come down heavy briefly which could coat the roadway and make it slick especially bridges and overpasses. then it is gone. thursday looks to be a nice day with temperatures in the 40's. let's go to thursday night. the storm in california redeveloped over the deep south and goes up the east coast. i think this is a little fast that it is precipitating by thursday afternoon or early evening. i think it is thursday night, early friday. there is a wintry mix friday morning. this is three days out so a lot can change. the rain-snow line is not that far away. snow to the north and a mixture from the triangle northward. could be light snow, and then freezing rain. as we go into the day friday, the area of plain old rain advances northward and we all

there is a lull friday evening and night with a chance of snow on the backside. that easily change with a shift in the track. 50 to 75 miles north and south could make a difference of whether it is rain or snow. maybe a spotty slick spot tomorrow. bigger storm friday into saturday with a potential wintry mix. we could see all types of precipitation. two things to talk about -- and there could be some in some areas by the time it is over with. the seven day forecast -- messy friday into saturday. there are indications that next week temperatures rebound. there will not be a big chunk of arctic air. this time, it will warm up quickly behind it. anna: that is like we like to hear.

was hit by another vehicle. driver fatigue is suspected as a cause of a deadly greyhound crash in northern california. passengers reported that the driver appeared to doze off moments before the accident. this is south of san jose. two women died when the bus overturned. the ntsb is now investigating this crash. weather experts aresing every strong word they can to describe a snowstorm taking aim at much of the east later this week. one calling it a doozy. the storm is moving slowly. but packing a huge punch of frigid temperatures. plenty of snow and gusting winds. road crews are all ready to work, trying to minimize dangerous conditions. you don't like the doozy line. >> i do. it's a technical term for a storm. it might not be cooperstown, but it is the baseball hall of fame. pete rose will be inducted into the cincinnati reds hall of fame this summer, and the team will also retire his number. just last month the baseball commissioner decided not to lift rose's lifetime ban from betting on baseball.
