can be prevented. joel: he got the e-mail from duke notifying him about the booze-fueled episode in the meeting tonight of duke representatives and representatives from all the fraternities and sororities. when the meeting ended, we got a statement from duke reading, "all agreed that what happened last night is unacceptable and steps must be taken to prevent any future occurrence." they have a goal of identifying specific and actionable proposals for the immediate future. the university concluded that the suspension of activities has been partially lifted. >> it is really important considering how the event happened. the university is taking action to prevent things like this from happening in the future. joel: administrators expect

meantime, the sorority girl is expected to make a full recovery. steve: also developing right now, an arrest in the murder of a hillsboro man. burlington police say cesar torres acevedo intentionally set fire to trujillo in june. he died in august from his injuries. investigators say the two men knew each other but did not release a motive. torres acevedo is in jail on an unrelated charge. tisha: now to a story we have been tracking all night long. a 47-year-old man hit and killed on the on-ramp of i-40. traffic started to back up on i-40. jason jones ran off the road and hit james lucas before hitting the guard rail. lucas was pronounced dead at the scene.

the rent has been closed for several hours while police investigated. it has been reopened. steve: a man from north carolina accused of transporting $14 million worth of heroin to new york. the nypd says the drugs were hidden in vehicle parts. they say the drugs sat in the axle casing and packaged in square shapes. he was facing a long list of drug charges. we are working to find out where he lives in north carolina. the aspca giving us fresh images from inside a raid at an hoke county. the animals living in what they claim are deplorable conditions. food or water. greg barnes is live. a lot of people want to know what will happen to those animals tonight. greg: a lot of people have asked

many of the animals are still on the property for the time being. others are being housed at temporary emergency shelters. you can see a line of sheriffs deputies cars. what started as a sanctuary for animals is a crime scene. >> these animals are not going to have to suffer any longer. >> workers say this is what shares deputies found when they rated this self-described animal shelter. >> wounds on the animals, no water for the animals. animals that seem to be malnourished. greg: the owners were arrested on animal cruelty charges and illegally using medicine. the aspca brought in huge trailers to treat and triage the

volunteers from humane societies and animal rescue groups across the country, even hawaii, helped remove the animals. >> one of the largest, if not the largest rescue the aspca has done. greg: at one time, the haven hosted more than 1000 animals. it has been unlicensed for about a decade. the latest application was denied by officials this month. the hoke county sheriff admitted investigating numerous animal welfare complaints for months. the owners could face more charges. >> there is a lot of neglect going on. there are some situations that are quite severe. greg: it will take several more days for investigators and the aspca to wrap up things here. in the meantime, the spears are

he is the leading league m.v.p. candidate, putting up record-breaking numbers during the regular season. steve: a plea from the obama administration to stop tearing apart families. recent deportation rate targeted illegal immigrants. this photo was posted on twitter, showing demonstrators covering their mouse in a -- their mouths in a show of solidarity for detained immigrants. >> what is happening is part of a movement across the southeast. earlier today, immigration rights advocates went to washington, d.c. with a petition, asking president obama to put an end to these deportation rate they say are ripping families apart. those who fight for the rights of immigrants stand tonight for the ones -- the rights of those

>> one case, she was deported in 2010. >> one by one, they read stories of families who came to the u.s. from central america, many to escape violence and drug wars in their homeland. >> this country is not supposed to be like this. >> 18-year-old laura has friends and family members who are undocumented. what are your fears? >> always been separated from them and not being able to see them again. andrea: she is calling on the department of homeland security to halt the surge in deportation rates -- raids. >> as soon as they got there, they got killed. it is just terrible. andrea: they are targeting those who have not left the country since receiving final orders to do so.

and tornado touchdown. cars and trucks tossed around on this florida interstate. why the west coast may be responsible. first, take a live look outside our downtown raleigh studios and newsroom. chris, you are talking about chilly rain on the way. chris: rain on the way tomorrow, especially the latter part of the morning hours. right now, it is rather cool. temperatures in the 30's. should stay above freezing in most parts.

tomorrow and tisha: a police chase and gunbattle on a busy suburban atlanta highway. it started when a georgia state

driver but he would not stop. other troopers joined the chase and surrounded the car. when the driver started to make a break for it, he started shooting at the officer, who responded with fire. the suspect was shot multiple times. his condition is unknown. steve: a danger to the community. a federal judge ordering seven members of an armed antigovernment militia to remain in jail until friday. the group, including the leader ammon bundy, were arrested last night after a shootout with law enforcement. one man was shot dead when he charged agents. bundy is asking the remaining holdouts at the refuge to go home. tisha: a rare january tornado wreaking havoc on south florida with cars on top of each other in the parking lot and 100 mile-per-hour wind tossing cars and tractor-trailers on the

tonight, southern california is bracing for more severe weather. the storm system originated from el nio in the pacific ocean. steve: this guy able to wiggle out of his handcuffs and get in the driver seat of the trooper's tahoe. there was a canine in the back seat the whole time. his guy is benjamin henson. he drove several miles before plowing into a gate. he then jumped out and ran away. he was found about five miles away. the canine was in the back of all time. you can see him right there. he was not hurt. even elk need help getting out of the snow sometimes. to oregon state troopers helped this elk from the deep snow after it got stuck. the video shows them attaching a rope and pulling the elk out of there. it was weak and struggling to stand, but they say it was ok.

38, rocky mount with mel -- rocky mount wilson. new the virginia border, we had a little spotty rain earlier in the day. now we are watching rain breaking out. a little bit near south carolina and georgia. this will continue to blossom and head to the northeast. some of that will get here as we had to mid to late morning tomorrow. tonight, generally drive. temperatures right around freezing. a little bit below new the virginia border. should be dry early on in the morning tomorrow. chance of rain increasing from southwest to northeast as we head through the day. temperatures will be chilly, mid to upper 30's as we head through the midday hour. the best shot at me looks to be triangle south and to the east. the further west you are, the less chance of any rainfall. your we are at 9:00, still fairly dry.
