8:00, there could be an isolated damaging wind gust, so we're going from winter to spring in one day. don't do that too often around here. the good news is, things settle down, tomorrow afternoon looks much better. tisha: thank you. we have a few school delays to pass along to you. durham public schools, franklin county, grandville county, halifax county, northhampton county, orange county, person county, are all operating on a two-hour delay tomorrow. and schools in virginia are closed. remember, you can check full closings and delays any time at abc11.com. the wake county school district tweeting this out tonight. kids, do your homework. if you haven't already. tomorrow is looking like a great day for teaching and learning. steve: the temperatures are expected to rise overnight but fog is the real problem across the triangle right now. take a look at that. that is a live look at the cam

icy conditions have also been a problem tonight. emergency management tweeting though warning about multiple accidents and asking people to slow down. how are things looking in durham right now? reporter: still pretty foggy at this hour. here's a look at our dash cam here outside. breaking news one there. we go. there's the view. pretty foggy. roads still wet at this hour. right now, not seeing any traffic. things are calming down. let's rewind the clock a few hours and show you some video of some accidents we ran into throughout the evening. one was a multiple vehicle accident at m.l.k. in the 150 -- 15501 area. several people were involved in that scene. you can see a white pickup truck and a van with obvious damage to the side. this accident backed up a lane of traffic as police work to

there did report seeing some icy conditions in that area. just before that accident, we were at another accident in durham. this one involves eight vehicles. police had that one blocked off pretty far. we couldn't get too close. but they confirmed that that appeared to be weather-related and no one was seriously hurt in that. that exhibit was -- exit was closed off for two hours. it's reopened within the past half hour or hour rather. a live look at this hour. it is very foggy right now. anyone out here is taking it slow for the fog and any possible icy patches that could still be left over. that is what we have been seeing. again, right now, things are calming down traffic-wise. this fog is just so thick out here. back to you as we continue to ride around. steve: it's above freezing now so hopefully those icy problems are go away now. we want to remuned you, it is

our weather alert app. you'll get weather alerts and school delays. it's also a great way to upload your videos right to us. check out the free app any time. tisha: breaking news right now. a fort bragg soldier running into a burning apartment to save a fem family. this is unfolding right now off cliffdale road in fayetteville. reporter: good evening. the good news is, everybody got out of the three-story apartment building here. the bad news is, a lot of them had to stand around for about an hour and a half shivering in the cold while fire officials cleared the building. let's show you some video. this is eyewitness video taken by one of the residents as the fire can be seen leaping over the roof of the building. firefighters tell us that they suspect the fire may have begun in a back balcony of apartment 304, on the third floor. but it quickly spread to the roof line and got up in the roof and started filling apartments on the third and

they were quickly able to knock this fire down. the apartments on the lower floors did have some extensive smoke and water damage. they're trying to assess that right now. as the fire burns, the residents who smell the smoke ran out, started beating on their neighbors' doors to get everyone out. a fort bragg soldier was able to run into the apartment where the fire started and help the people inside there. >> i went there to see if they were ok. there were two kids in there. lady by herself. she got out of there. reporter: was the fire in the apartment or on the balcony? >> on the balcony. i don't know how it started. reporter: again at this point, the fire inspectors say they are still trying to determine exactly what sparked the fire. again, they say it appears to have started somewhere on the back balcony of that apartment. the good news is everybody got out safe.

new tonight, the north carolina primary in limbo. the redistricting crisis resulting from that recent federal court ruling threatens to put the march 15 vote on hold. lawmakers have been ordered to draw a new voting map by february 19. we have more on this looming deadline and what it could mean to us all. reporter: we may know more specifics tomorrow. but as it stands tonight, two north carolina congressional primary races could be postponed. state lawmakers can't beat the deadline to redraw those disputed voting maps. all day long, in a sparsely attended hearing room inside the legislature, lawmakers heard from voters on how to redraw the state's first and 12th congressional districts deemed illegal by a federal appeals court. >> do the right thing. the right thing being drawing these districts the way that they should have been drawn in the first place. reporter: the two tough republicans who led the charge to redraw the maps in 2011 were

court that the maps they drew mannedered. stacking in black voters to power. >> we continue to believe these legal. in accordance with both the existing state and federal statutes as well as the state and federal constitution. reporter: others want the supreme court justice to delay the ruling. >> please do not buckle to this judicial tyranny. i ask you to charge ahead with the march primaries. reporter: some democrats want the state to postpone the primaries in the disputed districts from march to mafmente >> i think clearly there's enough time to do it. reporter: insisting voters deserve to vote in legal districts. >> the technology is there to redraw the maps. it's a matter of using criteria that's been described by the court to draw them in a legal way. reporter: tomorrow morning lawmakers will meet back here

they can legally use to draw those districts. meantime, those new maps are due by friday. that is if chief justice roberts decides not to delay the federal court's ruling. we could hear a decision from justice roberts as early as tomorrow. tisha: thank you. new tonight, an arrest and a robbery and murder of a man in a wheelchair in fayetteville. damien boyd was arrested in florida last night. he's in the jail awaiting extradition back to fayetteville. he's accused of killing hanee byrd. his body was found last week. boyd was initially a person of interest in the case. steve: at the wake county courthouse, closing arguments in the traffic onsmith murder trial will take place tomorrow. it was put on hold today because of the winter weather. he's accused of killing melissa huggins jones inside her apartment back in 2013. the young mother's 8-year-old daughter found her body.

rested its case and the defense decided not to present any evidence. you can watch those closing arguments streaming live tomorrow. tisha: durham mayor presenting the state of the city address. bell says he has two years left as the head of the city and there's a lot he's hoping to accomplish. the mayor says the biggest challenge is during his final term include affordable housing, the crime rate and roads. he's encouraging durham residents to attend coffee with council meetings to give input about the city's future planning. >> [inaudible] that was a bad moment. steve: a single father in raleigh remembering one of the toughest days of his life. abc 11 together and your generosity are helping restore his faith. we first told but mike leary last week when someone told his specially equipped car right out of his driveway. mike got his car back over the weekend but he says he doesn't

chris will tisha: incredible images coming in from the storm zone in louisiana. dangerous storms rolling through the state, leaving behind downed trees and power lines and even causing major damage to a restaurant. people eating at a pizza hut had to run for cover as winds blew the roof from a neighboring car wash onto the restaurant. one eyewitness said she had just pulled up to the restaurant when debris came falling down around her. many customers huddled in a bathroom until after the storm passed. steve: new tonight, the donald trump-ted cruz bromance in the middle of a nasty breakup. trump is demanding cruz retract what his campaign calls false

or face a lawsuit challenging the texas senator's ability to serve in the white house. the republican frontrunner has been taking aim at cruz during rallies in south carolina ahead of this weekend's jop primary. trump has previously questioned crus' citizenship. cruz was born in canada to an american mother. tisha: a new study linking popular heart burn medication to a risk of dementia. the drugs include drugs like prylosec. researches found people 75 and old who are take the medication had a 44% increased risk of dementia compared to those not taking the medication. more than 15 million americans use these and concern has been increasing that people may be overusing them. steve: here on the big board, it's time to show you the must-see video of the night. we begin across the pond where they are also dealing with the aftermath of winter weather. take a look at this traffic camera in sussex. a really icy wipeout here. as we take a close look, you can see that vehicle rolls onto

there in the grass. the crash came just moments after another vehicle skidded off the road you see over there in the same place. fortunately neither driver was seriously injured. those two narrowly missed a head-on collision. let's take you to southern california now and an international effort to rescue these golden retrievers. 20 dogs traveled halfway around the world to find new homes in l.a. they were rescued from the streets of istanbul, turky. the dogs were once a status symbol among the wealthy in turkey but they were released out onto the streets when they apparently lost their luster. after the dogs were cleared by customs in l.a., volunteers took those goldens for a much-needed walk and gave them food and water as well. that was a hefty price tag. cost about $2,500 per dog to get them to california. so that's a very dedicated rescue group there. tisha: wow. lost their luster? steve: i know. in this country they will not lose their luster. there are a lot of people

california. meteorologist: a couple more issues to get through. the fog the next few hours and the heavy rain tomorrow. then, nice and quiet. for several days. we deserve it after the last couple weeks around here. temperatures starting to climb in many areas. been a slow process. they'll continue to do so. but clinton leading the way now. wait until you see what their temperature's doing. we should bust up into the 40's and low oose by sun rise, around the triangle. but that will be accompanied by some heavy rain. now we have the fog there. hardly can see it blue there's terminal two at r.d.u. about a half-inch of melted presiptation in terms of snow. a little bit of that sleet and freezing rain. the fog again an issue. visibility down less than .8 of a mile at smithfield. about .1 of a mile at r.d.u. generally a quarter mile or less in this yellow shaded area. that's going to continue for several more hours as the warmer air surges in toward two, three -- 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 a.m. that should scour the fog out. shouldn't be an issue in the morning but we'll have other problems then with the rain.

of any frozen precipitation. that winter storm warning for person and orange county in fkt until 7:00. for just what's on the ground. you can see nothing else was falling there. that warning really is only for just the icy roads that may still be going on in some of those areas where you had heavier freezing rain. 33 at r.d.u. right now. humidity at 96. barely above freezing. it's been a fight to get temperatures to warm up. here's the leading edge of that really warm air. right over sampson county. 51 there. near fayetteville and goldsboro, still stuck in the 30's. that warmer air should continue to go inland. i don't think we're going to get into the 60's but it is 61 at wilmington. it's been that all afternoon while we've been stuck in an icy air mass with temperatures in the 20's and 30's. this cold air is dense. extends all the way down to columbia. so it's taking a really long time for it to scour out but it will as stronger wind as i head of this storm begin to bring that warmer air in. look at the showers and storms.

georgia right now. and strong severe thunderstorms in south georgia. freezing rain advisory north of atlanta and a tornado watch in south georgia. very dynamic system here with all kinded of weather. we're on the warmer side of it or we will be. threat of winter weather is over. now we look ahead to the potential for some gusty winds and heavy rain tomorrow morning. rest of the overnight, scattered areas of light rain. watch what happens as we get toward sun rise. the heavy rain begins to pick up. a line of showers comes our way. may not be much thunder or lightning with this but strong winds may be able to mix on the surface with this, especially as it gets to the coastal plain. this will be -- plane. this will be a slow one. ice on the roadways will get washed away but the heavy rain, reduces visibility. ponding of water on the roadways and the potential for an isolated damaging wind gust going from winter weather to spring weather and the threat, small threat, marginal risk of severe weather tomorrow. i think the bigger threat's going to be the heavy rain.
