>> yes, sir. >> reporter: erin andrews overcome with emotion as the judge read the verdict. the jury deciding the nashville mar vot shares the blame for that secretly recorded video seen by more than 17 million people. erin andrews later tweeting this statement. i've been honored by all the support from victims around the world. their outreach has helped me be able to stand up and hold accountable those whose job it is to protect everyone's safety. >> it's ongoing and it's going to be ongoing for the rest of her life. >> reporter: andrews claimed the hotel made it easy for her stalker, michael barrett to get a room next door to hers and through a peephole he altered shoot video of her getting out of the shower. the hotel claims he was a criminal who tricked them into gaining access and one juror saying the only debate for the group was how much to pay her. the $55 million payout will be split almost in half with barrett taking 51% of the fault. the hotel's management company

>> an amount that high sends a pretty strong message. >> the hotel industry we just felt like they need to get the message that this is somebody's privacy. it's their personal life and you got to take that seriously. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyers disappointed with the outcome saying they hope to eventually talk to the jurors before deciding if they will appeal. >> keep in mind this had never happened before and hadn't happened since. there are all kinds of measures that were undertaken after this was discovered, what mr. barrett had done. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyer says the nashville marriott has installed peephole covers to make sure this never happens again, amy. >> eva pilgrim, thanks so much. joining us now abc news chief legal analyst, dan abrams. six hours. were you surprised by such a quick and large verdict. >> i was stunned by the speed. this was a long jury trucks with a lot of complicated legal questions. but let's be clear. this was a huge win for erin andrews. not just in terms of the number,

verdict came down. meaning the concern for erin andrews was too much of this verdict will be for barrett, the guy who actually filmed it. why is that a problem? he's got no money so the real question was how much is going to be allocated to marriott so by doing this verdict at 51% responsibility for barrett, he was clearly the guy who actually did it, but then a whole 49% for marriott, that's about as good a verdict as she could get in terms of the split. not only do you have this big $55 million verdict but this $26 million verdict against marriott so all in all a really big win for erin andrews. >> do you think that the amount will hold, though, under appeal. >> the first question is going to be for the judge. the judge is going to review this verdict first and if the judge thinks that it's excessive, the judge could actually be involved in reducing it first of all even before an appeal but i think that there's very likely this verdict will stand largely even if it's reduced a bit. >> all right, dan abrams, we appreciate it.

they could do some shopping and he wanted to get a couple pictures and shoot them to his mom in a text so i let him borrow my phone while he was looking down just to see how they turned out before he sent the text, i saw the bat slip out of the player's hands and was headed towards us and didn't have a lot of time to react and just did whatever i could to try to block it or deflect the bat and really had no idea how close it came to my son's face until i saw the picture sunday night. >> but i tell you it's actually really, really scary when you see the picture. it almost takes your breath away. what goes through your mind like you said when you saw the pitcher how close it came to hitting landon. what goes through your mind when you see the pictures now? >> thankful that he's okay and, you know, god was with us and looked out for us.

racing to make sure the 214 passengers on board were safe. nine were taken to the hospital. four suffered serious injuries. several train cars remain unstable and are now being removed. also breaking overnight, a reported tornado west of ft. worth, texas, at least a dozen homes have been destroyed, but no reports of any serious injuries. that region is bracing for more severe weather and flooding rains. rob's forecast is coming up in just a bit. well, the pentagon says u.s. air strikes in somalia have killed more than 150 members of the al shabaab terror group linked to al qaeda who are believed to be making final preparations for a large attack. american troops in somalia were believed to be among the group's targets just last month, al shabaab detonated a bob inside a laptop inside a commercial plane over somalia. turning to the presidential race, another round of voting kicks off with primaries or caucuses in four states from michigan to hawaii. an abc news poll out this morning uncovered potential

the latest figures showing him winning easily in a three or four-man race but in a hypothetical two-man race he would trail both ted cruz and marco rubio. meanwhile, as trump gets slammed with a wave of new attack ads michael bloomberg ruling out that run saying he doesn't want his candidacy to help trump or cruz to win the race. well, new video from a near tragic plane crash in new york. look at that. the pilot deployed a parachute to soften the impact after losing engine power at 2,000 feet landing in this industrial park. missing that building by just ten feet. he and his daughter walked away unharmed. shocking videotape from near chicago a suspected drunk driver was pulled over for driving with this 15-foot tree stuck in the grill of his car. her car. police say she admitted hitting the tree, but wasn't sure where that crash happened. and a favorite breakfast sandwich is now off the menu at hundreds of starbucks

listeria contamination. the fda is recalling the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich sold at starbucks in texas, arkansas and oklahoma. no illnesses have been reported. and now to anoer big headline this morning. a major medical breakthrough that may offer some hope to women who have been struggling to get pregnant. doctors from the cleveland clinic performed the first uterine transplant in the united states and abc's linsey davis has that story. >> reporter: on monday, the cleveland clinic described how a team of 70 top experts completed the first ever uterus transplant in the u.s. last month giving new hope to women unable to carry a child. >> these women are born with normal ovaries that produce healthy eggs. the problem is that there is nowhere for these eggs to go. >> reporter: the patient is 26-year-old lindsey. she was the first of ten scheduled to undergo this. >> i was 16 and was told i would never have children and here we

that journey. >> reporter: here's how it works. a woman born without a uterus or nonfunctioning uterus gets a healthy uterus from a deceased donor implanted. after a year fertilized eggs are transferred one by one until the woman becomes pregnant. as for lindsey she still has a year of anti-rejeekz medication ahead of her before finding out if she can get pregnant. her doctors remain confident but she says she has more than just them to thank. >> i would like to take a moment to express the immense gratitude i feel towards my donor's family. they have provided me with a gift that i will never be able to repay and i am beyond thankful for them. >> reporter: for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, new york. [ applause ] >> the story bringing tears to abc news chief women's health correspondent, dr. jennifer ashton and dr. ashton, this is a surgery for women born without a uterus, something most of us haven't heard of but something that isn't that rare.

in this case it's about potentially giving one. we're talking here about a syndrome called mrkh syndrome and this is really a nail our of development of the genital organs in a woman that affects 1 in 5,000 female births. they are born without a uterus and some cases without a lower genital tract but do have functioning ovaries but can be biological parents but cannot carry. >> they have to survive for a year taking immunotherapy and drugs and will there be any different ivf from a regular woman than one who had a transplant 13 a couple big differences. when she undergoes ivf she will only be getting one embryo, no twins, she will undergo a planned scheduled elective cesarean section. this is'a uterus we're going to test in labor and of course she will have to take strong anti-rejection medication.

babies born to transplant patients and they do pretty well but that's not an insignificant hurdle. >> had has happened in sweden. doctors have already successfully transplanted a uterus there. but surrogacy isn't legal in that country and our country given the fact that a woman can use her eggs and transplant them in another woman, what do you have to say to people who question this practice because we have that option? >> right, and the opponents here or the critics will say, no question, uterine surrogacy is cheaper, easier and safer, but it really speaks to the powerful biologic, emotional, psych logic drive that women have to carry their own children. it's not the only path to parenthood but have to remember the context, 1967 the world's first heart transplant, almost 50 years later this is a historic event in women's health. >> you just gave me chills. all right, dr. ashton, thanks so much. jenn will take your questions throughout the morning. tweet her @drjashton as i search for the cam are and go to "gma's" facebook page as well.
