in the country. caitlin: interesting to watch for sure. steve: let's get to the rain forecast. chilly rain showers last night, moving down east. most of the day, cloudy, cool, spotty drizzle, late shower here and there, a cold day today. 40 at rdu, lower 40s in the sandhills. temperatures in the mid-40s today. i know it looks like a lot of rain on the map, denoting a few spotty showers possible and i think the higher probability will be through the evening hours. caitlin: thank you, steve. breaking news coming into the newsroom. a driver said to be in serious condition after driving into a utility pole. this -- the police say the driver ran off the road and ended up being pinned into the vehicle. they were down to one lane of travel. new this morning in fayetteville, police are investigating a deadly shooting.

block of lands-end road before midnight. they say when they got there, they found a man who had been shot inside the home. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. authorities are asking if you know anything about the shooting, you contact local police. another winning weekend for the unc tar heels. their loyal fans getting as close as they could to action yesterday. carolina fighting hard in the second half against providence, taking that win 85-66, moving them on to the sweet 16. here's mark armstrong with more. >> hey, guys, a sweet 16 date with the indiana hoosiers. let's show you how this one unfolded. in the first half, brice johnson on the fast break, and the heels

announced restoration of prosperity to this community. caitlin: for the second time this month, a protester appears to have been sucker punched a a donald trump rally. this incident happened in tuscon, arizona, last night. a trump supporter appears to punch him and kick him after he fell to the ground. police took that supporter out as well. there were other antitrump protests going on in new york and fountain hills arizona. three people were arrested there. earlier this month, another man caught on camera sucker punching

rally in this makes the sixth suicide bombing in turkey in the past year. and in iraq, a u.s. marine killed by enemy fire. isis forces fired two rockets onto a base where american troops were stationed. the civic members named so far however has not been released. here at home, two people have been arrested in a six-year-old murder case that started out as a love triangle and ended with one man dead. denise green and kenneth hodges are being charged. police say hernandez and mrs. green were having an affair. detectives had initially charged hernandez in the case but it was dismiss said for lack of evidence but authorities say they have enough evidence to charge both with that murder.

steve: good sunday morning, everyone. happy spring to you. not going to feel like it. a lot of clouds in fayetteville. about a 10th of an inch since midnight. temperatures in the lower 40s. 30s in the northern counties. 43 in smithville, 43 in southern pines and fayetteville. temperatures are going to be really cool today. as a matter of fact, they'll only stay in the low 40s all the way through lunch time today. a spotty shower or drizzle possible, but more likely, that will happen this evening. rain has been pushing on out, a lot of low clouds in place right now and a cold day. low to mid-40s for highs. warmer tomorrow, tuesday, 63, and 70s coming into play starting wednesday. thursday looks to be the warmest day. vernal equinn ox happened this morning at 12:30 so it's almost a full day of spring.

sun's rays directly over the equator. meanwhile at rdu, cloudy and damp, no major headaches. the big hubs showing no delays. the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. caitlin: thank you, steve. a story we brought to you as breaking news yesterday morning. we've learned a cary woman is in custody after a shooting that injured her father. 21-year-old angel bradford is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. officers were called to the reserve at magnolia ridge because of a fight between bradford and her boyfriend. that's when her father showed up. somehow, there was a struggle and during that, he was shot. angel bradford barricaded herself inside her apartment. neighbors said they could hear a commotion snool my dogs jumped up when she heard something. i just thought she had to go out.

caitlin: bradford later came out peacefully and her father was sent to the hospital. at this point, we are still trying to get an update on his injuries. another update to pass along now as we know the names of the victims killed in a murders-suicide in fayetteville. 60-year-old burrell rains shot and killed his wife victoria before turning the gun on himself on jones street. police were called to the address for a well being check and found the couple dead. a legal battle is brewing after the arrest of the top suspects

caitlin: good morning, welcome back on this sunday, march 20. here's what's making headlines this morning. in havana, anticipation of president barack obama's arrival today. the visit to the tiny island nation will serve as a powerful symbol of the relationship that the u.s. and cuba are forging after half a century of cold war tension. a woman is in critical condition as authorities investigate a possible meth lab. in clayton, officials say the woman showed up at the hospital after drinking some type of a liquid that had chemicals in it.

when he was both black boxes from the plane have since been recovered. a high school basketball coach is in the hospital this morning after his team's bus rolled over. authorities say a driver spilled a drink on herself, after she side swiped the bus causing it to overturn. everyone on board has been treated and released, including 21 students. a community prayer service is planned for this afternoon. and a real life lesson from mother nature. this 10-foot alligator popped up outside of a school in lakeland

staff and students say they were amazed to see such a big gait gator roaming around. police kept the gator in one spot until a professional trapper came to get it. they believe the reptile was headed for a lake across the street. we see deer, occasionally cows. i don't think those win over a gator any day. they're find behind a few bars kind of thing but -- ever being chased by one, they're much faster than you would think. but it's harder for them to turn. steve: that is what i live my life by, when in trouble, zig-zag. caitlin: do that at the weather wall. steve: sure. let's talk about the rain showers we had last night moving on out. cloudy skies and boy, it's going to be chilly today, temperatures struggling to get to the upper

as far as active weather, really not today. it's going to be drizzly and a shower tonight, but by friday, i expect to have a band of shourdz showers and a frontal boundary moving on in. tomorrow, rather chilly. cold today, highs in the 40s, maybe spotty showers and drizzle around. it will be a short-lived cold spell. temperatures will warm up. i'll call it a slow warming trend, 70s by mid-week. frost potentially, outlying areas close to freezing tuesday morning. tomorrow morning, some areas in the lower 30s so it is a possibility. overall, i think as far as a hard freeze, doesn't look like it's in the cards now. light breeze around 7 miles per hour. the north and northeast breeze will be with us. lower 40s elsewhere and we won't see the temperatures budge much.

but you see all the days preceding that. we have numbers in the 70s. 86, which tied a record where you wanted to get out and do some gardening, maybe plant some flourz flowers. if you did, you might have to cover them up. between april 1 and april 11 is our average last freeze across the heart of carolina. you might want to hold off a little bit on planting some flowers. cloudy skies, drizzle around. lower 40s and temperatures around mid-day today. through the afternoon, not a big change here. low to mid-40s for our temperatures. our model insisted on seeing a break or two in the clouds. we'll see an upper level disturbance ahead giving us more clouds and squeeze out a shower. that will generate the coastal low. it will race up the coast causing snow up there. philadelphia maybe an inch, maybe 1-2 in new york. the highest probability of getting snow accumulation will

from heading to the saturday night. abc news, new york. caitlin: durham police are investigating after a man was hit at a bus stop. this happened on club boulevard just after 6:00 last night. police say the man ran across the street trying to catch a bus and turned around at the last minute and was hit. his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. firefighters are working to figure out what caused a blaze that destroyed a home in raleigh. the homeowner says it started in the garage, then spread to the rest of the home. thankfully, no one was injured. a woman is in critical condition as authorities investigate a possible meth lab in her home. authorities state that woman showed up at the hospital yesterday after apparently drinking something that might have had chemicals in it. once they went to her home to investigate, deputies found what

the house was taped off and the fbi was called in. so far, no charges have been filed. a bullet hole found near where akiel denkins was killed is not believed to be related to that shooting. a raleigh police officer shot and killed denkins last month while sevrng a warrant. the officer says he fired in self defense. they expect the report on the shooting to be wrapped up next week. the family's attorneys believed that bullet hole told a different story from what the officer had reported. those who died behind bars, family and friends held a memorial walk in honor of those who have died inside the durham county jail. this weekend marks two months since mccape's death. murray died a year before. the families are still asking for answers.

to medical neglect by jail staff. >> memorialized, for the one-year anniversary coming up, and secondly, to let people inside the jail know that we care for them. >> another man, ra fale bennett died in custody. although the circumstances behind his death have not been released. since 2000, 10 people have died in custody at the durham county jail. a pet adoption drive for rescued cats and dogs was such a huge success they had to end one day early yesterday. abc 11 together has been following the story of these animals rescued from horrible conditions at a shelter in hope county. they were put up for adoption in a three-day event that started on friday in san ford. it was supposed to be going on today still but because of the overwhelming response, the adoption fair, and they all have found their forever home. some cats and dogs were not part

weekend storm bears down on the northeast but some could still see several ivrps of snow. boston and cape cod, along with parts of rhode island, could see 4-8" of snow today. philadelphia and new york could get 1-2". four people, including a child, are recovering this morning after a concourse train at denver international airport apparently malfuvshgznctionedmalfunctioned. the train jolted passengers when it abruptly stopped at a terminal. the accident was caused by a software glitch that has been fixed. the big spring product launch for apple is expected to be a smaller affair this time around. the tech company is having its news conference tomorrow unveiling a smaller version of the iphone and ipad pro.
