what's wrong with a ponytail to the face? >> exactly. sheinelle, thank you so much. now to alarming new findings tied to the nation's drug epidemic. according to researchers at the university of pennsylvania, there has been a dramatic increase in overdose deaths related to prescription drugs used to create anxiety to insomnia. dr. natalie ar is a news medical editor. good morning. >> goomorning. >> this is a class of drugs. what are the names that peoplee will recognize? >> these drugs, the ones people will know, are valium, xanax, klonopin, librium, in the middle of the 20th century. these are used to treat insomnia, mood disorders. we'll talk about some of the specifics. >> okay. anxiety. insomnia, i hadn't used these drdrs used for that. >> where this data comes from actually, from 2013, when the study period ended.

that these drugs were prescribed for her anxiety, mood disorders and insomnia. they're also used to treat other rhings. they can be used as muscle relaxants, used to treat alcohol withdrawals and things like that. these are the common reasons for the drugs. >> let's get to the heart of the matter. you overuse, overdose, and use with other things like alcohol. >> exactly. basically, what the study found, what the study authors found, is over an 18-year period, from 1996 to 2013, the number of adulul who filled these prescriptionscrine ss increased by 67%. more concerning with this statistic, the number of deaths increased almost four fold. the number of prescriptions were increasing three times as much, but the number of deaths increased by four times, or more than four fold. >> is it because they're mixing these -- the benzos, as they're called, with prescription drugs? >> right.

explanation for this. what the study authors suggested is it's not only a combination of using these drugs with other substances, such as opioid and alcohol, which, when used in combination, marginalizing the safety of the drugs. not only the fact that the prescriptions increased but the quantity almost doubled. each individual person might actually be using twice as much as they should be. or using it for a longer duration. all of which increases the risk for overdose. >> one of the take aways when i was reading about this seems to be to providers, to maybe not be so liberal in prescribing these if there is something else that might work as effectively. >> exactly. the issue is, why are we prescribing these drugs as providers? is there a safety net? is there a safety mechanism in place? is it up to the pharmacist to look for a drug interaction? honestly, the onuswnnus is on all of us as a community to prevent the unfortunate deaths.

>> crowd sausage. you can use any protein. my mom uses shrimp and i sometimes use chicken. whatever you have in the pantry -- or the fridge, not the pantry. you want to refrigerate your meat. >> little bit of oil. >> you can get over here and stir. >> yup. >> basically, we want to make sure it's not pink. as soon as the sausage starts to cook, we'll add the crushed tomatoes. you can buy tomatoes with oregano and garlic if you want. you can let it simmer 5 to 10 minutes. then we'll add the tapers. they add salt, hint of lemon, a lot of flavor for a little thing. >> your sauce is the crushed tomatoes. >> basically. with crushed tomatoes in a can, you can do anything. it's a base for almost anything. always taste as you go. it's the one thing that people don't do. taste it and see how much salt and pepper.
