which they believe was luggage containing explosive devices. those two detonated those devices killing at least ten people here in the airport behind me. they believe, the authorities, that these are two brothers, khalid and najim el bakraoui. one was sentenced in 2010 for having shot a police officer during an attempted robbery at a currency office exchange. his brother, khalid, was sentenced to five years in prison for having attempted a carjacking, but not linked to terrorism at least until march 15th when police raided an apartment in the north of brussels where they believe they found things linked to the paris attack in november. when they raided the apartment, they were met with gunfire.

some of the police were wounded. the brothers escaped but found their fingerprints as well as the fingerprints of salah abdeslam. they've been looking for the two brothers ever since. next what they knew is they walked right in, into the airport pushing those trolleys with explosive devices on them, not even concealing their identities or faces and detonatinghe explosives killing many people. now they are also looking for a third man they've seen in that picture, they believe that is najim laachraoui. >> we know the audio was a little funky on that, but we wanted to make sure we brought you that live report. we'll have more on that in a couple minutes. >> first a check of your weather on this wednesday morning.

armed with a pick ax, busting out car windows, puncturing tires and lunged at officers who tried to intervene who then opened fire. the medical examinerer office pulled his body out. the man identified by poli as 25-year-old ethan rincone. ey say around 9:30 last night neighbors called police about him. police described his behavior as violent with that pick ax. the man had gone inside after officers arrived. when they went inside, we're told three officers confronted this suspect, the 25-year-old who lunged at them according to investigators with that pick ax. here is what police detectives had to say when w w spoke to them overnight. >> officers responded because of neighbors calling in. we have approximately about six vehicles with shattered windows and tired that have been blown

nbc 6 reporter michael spears live. michael, how did this escalate from vandalism to an officer-involved shooting. >> reporter: police just took off and we just got a look at two of the six vehicles that investigators say this 25-year-old man was damaging with that pick ax. you notice the flat tires there and also the busted windows right there. as far as what happened, take a look at this video. investigators say around 9:30 last night the man was in the neighborhood damaging these vehicles when neighbors called 911 and when they arrived. investigators say that the man went inside of his home. family was there as well. officers went inside. three officers confronted him. he had the pick ax still. they say he lunged at the officers and they were forced to open fire at him, striking the man and killing him. back out here live, pronounced dead on scene. what started this in the first

two brothers. khalid and ibrahim bakraoui, identified as the suicide bombers. the third man, the man in white with the black hat, he's been identified as najim laachraoui, already wanted in connection with the paris attacks. there are some reports he has been arrested. i want to say that nbc news has not been able to independently confirm those reports. now, raids are being carried out all across brussels. one of them led to the discovery of what investigators are calling a bomb making factory. the attacks are inspiring a show of solidarity around the world. iconic landmarks across europe and the u.s. have been lit in belgium's national colors. black, coyellow and red. there is a lot to get to this morning. we want to start with nbc's keir simmons, joining me right now
