reopens tomorrow morning, it's going to be a lot smoother. i think you are going to like it. evan axelbank live along i-275 to show us what is getting detoured tonight and what you can expect in the morning, too. evan? >> reporter: yeah, cynthia, right now the traffic is certainly picking up here. i am at the intersection of 275 and himes. now, cars have been redirected starting at 10:30, from the howard franklin exit to kennedy boulevard. up himes. and the traffic has certainly increased here around this corner, as cars have been going up 275 to get back on the highway, after the detour. and the good news is that after tomorrow morning at 5:30, the new highway will be open. there will be -- they will be closing the old lane, opening the new lanes and giving everybody a smooth comfort cruise through tamp awhich is what people have been waiting for for the last several years. starting at 10:30, cars were detoured from the end of the howard franklin onto kennedy

right now, workers are doing what they are calling the big shift to the northbound lanes. they are shutting down the old ones, opening the new ones, as i said. while the old ones were narrow, winding with dips in them. we all know that from driving that highway for several years. the new ones are going to be wider, straighter and even. so that's great. this project started back in 2012, but to drivers it feels like it started much longer ago than that. >> new -- moved to tampa 3 years ago. and it seems like they have been droogo doing construction ever since i got here. >> it was at capacity. traffic was going to be to ease congestion. we have to keep up with the growing population in florida. >> reporter: the detour's 2 miles long and could take longer than normal if you are up early tomorrow. so definitely leave more time if you are travelogue i-275

the detour will take you from kennedy to dale mabry, to cypress and then to himes. the project has one more leg to go, which is finishing the fourth lane of traffic that will be in the northbound lanes. now, originally this project was supposed to take until the end of the year. but, synthia, i am told by f-dot, it's going to take just a few more months to open up that fourth lane of traffic. >> wouldn't that be something? early. that just never happens. thanks so much, out there in the chilly weather. >> a would-be robberrens up in the hospital after a clerk foughto fought back at the whole foods store on mlk in tampa. we go live to the headquarters to hear what happened. >> reporter: the clerk was not about to be made into a victim. when the robbery suspect pulled out a knife rk the clerk pulled out a gun.

police say the suspect, anthony brice came in and demanded money. but his knife was no match for the clerk's firearm. the clerk pulled the trigger and shot the suspect in the head. brice was taken to tampa general hospital with life-threatening injuries. the clerk wasn't hurt, neither was another person in the store at the time. his brother's told us he's thankful. >> thank god nothing happened to my brother because -- [inaudible] my brother only work to make a living, honest living. >> reporter: police say a clerk told brian several times that he had a gun, but he ignored the warnings. he performed cpr on him before he was taken to the hospital. police are reviewing surveillance video from inside the store. but the witness and it is clerk

police think this will be a straight-forward case. >> new at 11:00, a warning for students at usf, campus police say a student was unpacking her car over the weekend and a man attacked her, early saturday evening in parking lot 53 in greek village at the corner of napele and holly drive. according to police, a man came up to the student, asked her where she could get an umbrella and then the man wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her. she tried to ran and he grabbed her again. she took off. police have a person of enter, but they are asking students to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. >> in jacksonville, sad news in the search for this little boy, lonzy barton. police have found the toddler's remains. he was 21 months old when he disappeared. tiffany tells us, it was the

>> you can see the cipes, flowers and cards here left at the scene, where the deputies believe they dorphed the remains of little lonzy barton, bringing a sense of relief to this community. >> to know that this baby is no longer suffering. he no longer has to go through any kind of pain and agony. >> reporter: a somber day for this jacksonville community, after investigators believe they discovered the remains of lonzy barton, the toddler missing since july who was presumed dead. >> i just pray that when it's all done and said, we can say that justice was served. >> reporter: investigators tell us the remeans were found in a wooded air off of u.s. 1, but wouldn't disclose the condition of the body or how barton may have died. the suspect, the boyfriend of the toddler's mother, actually came out to the area and led investigators to the remains.

ringling brothers is retiring the elephants in may two, years sooner than expected. erin mes merhas more. >> reporter: a spokesperson says the company first needed to answer logistical question, can they accommodate additional elephants and handle the extra waste, water and food and they answered the questions and did so a lot sooner. in just four months, ringling brothers circus tradition spanning more than a century comes to an end. >> certainly, this is unprecedented for us. it's historical for ringling brothers. >> manatee county-based parent company announced monday, it's retiring the elephants two years earlier than first planned. >> it was a very difficult decision for our company to make. we are talking about 145 years of a tradition. >> reporter: the decision came after animal rights activists

something ringling denied. but one caretaker says cities and counties have laws making the continued use of elephants impractical. >> it's just become logically impossible to give them the continuity of care that they require. >> reporter: that means the 11 elephants currently touring the country will soon join the 29 already at the conversation center. ringling determined sooner than anticipated the flght can handle the additional animals. >> there is no place like this in the world that is entirely dedicated to the asian elephant. >> reporter: still, not everyone is convinced this is the best place for the elephants. >> i don't trust them. >> reporter: louise has protested the circus for ded -- decades and she's skeptical. >> there is such a long pattern of abuse. i would love to wake up tomorrow and see this all change. i am going to hope for the best. but i think we have to be vigilant.

donald trump's comments about immigration, according to protesters. there are two gun bills in the works. one that would allow permit holders to openly carry handguns and the other would allow permit holders to carry guns on campus. advocates say it will make universities safer and the police chief and university security is against it. if blackjack was allowed it would create millions of dollars. finally, a proposal to regulate sports companies, such as draft kings and fan fuel. the session will be opened with governor scott's state of the state speech. he is expected to ask lawmakers to pass a $1 billion tax cut. hover boards, they were one of the hottest gifts this holiday

student center, and of course, we saw this... but when repy rolled back on the campus after the holidays, he got eighths bit of news concerning his hover board that he and a lot of other students are probably not too happy about. this flyer went up. it announces a ban of hover boards from any ucf owned, affiliated or managed community t. cites fire concerns and an ongoing hover board investigation by the consumer product safety investigation. >> this is a recent investigation, so if you have one, you recently bought it. that would be a shame. >> reporter: despite that, remy says he's not all that upset about the hover board housing ban. >> i understand the safety concern because once something becomes a danger to other people, i can understand why housing. >> reporter: his hover board will not be shipped home. >> i will put it inside my car. >> reporter: then he will keep

>> i'll keep going to classes with it and everything. >> local colleges, university of south florida -- they don't have a ban, but the school did distribute these flyers at the beginning of the semester that provides fire prevention and safety tips about the boards, it tells you what you need to know about it. wrfert of tampa doesn't have a policy against them. university of florida and florida state, on the other hand, they did ban hover boards but only from the residence hall. there you go. blue bell creameries is reassuring customers that its ice cream is safe, noting the steps it has taken to test for listeria. they are re-introducing ice cream into grocery stores and listeria was discovered again at the same production plant in texas. it wasn't in any of the products. blue bell is also under criminal investigation on how its executives handled the listeria outbreak, linked to three deaths

the visibility is great. inglewood beach and this from jennifer in lithia. if you are outside tonight, around sundown, you can look at the western sky and see a crescent moon that's set, soon after the sunset. this is a closer look at that moon nanamaria island. high clouds and cold rain falling south of us, as moisture rides along the cold front. that rain is not heading our way. high clouds could be around tomorrow, especially south of tampa bay. 48 in tampa. 41 in new tampa. st. pete is 52. already 36 in brooksville. and automobile, the cold spots tonight are going to be hernando and citrus in the low 30s. we slide south, threat in venice. 47 in lakewood ranch. southern count jees are all clear.

clearwater. 39 in lakeland. and the freeze warning does cover two counties. it does cover levey, where some of you watch us, but technically citrus and hernando counties in our viewing area, from spring hill east and citrus, under a freeze warning from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the red on the map indicates very dry air and the white and the gray indicates moisture. it's a nice way to tell which way the jet stream's blowing. you can see the clouds and moisture grather -- gaghtserring in the pacific. and this will ride along a subtropical jet and tell play a role in our weather, not tomorrow, not wednesday, not thursday, but probably on friday, there will be a band of rain with the front and maybe some severe weather. still too early to say, but the systems along the jet stream, during the elnino, any one of these can produce severe

48 dew point is 40. you have clouds and rain south of us. we had a chilly area of high pressure in the southeast. you have snow coming down in chicago and cincinnati. along an alberta clipper. there is more snow and rain out in the west. fargo 7 below. 28 in raleigh. throaive in nashville. as cold as it looks on this map -- yeah, it's cold. it is nothing unusual at all. when you look back on our climateidate ait's the second, third week in january, which is the coldest, coast to coast, it's supposed to be cold. it's winter time. a freeze north and down to 42. sunshine tomorrow and a chris crisp day. back up to 62 and the output for wednesday, partly cloudy and cool. we stay in the 60s. we are worried about rain and storms that could arrive on friday. we will talk more about that in detail tomorrow.
