>> good evening. thank you for being with us. i am lloyd sowers. >> anchor: and big storm system headed this way. and go over to mike bennett. >> weather: we are watching the threat for severe weather. we had storms roll through yesterday. is on the way. this is a look at the satellite and radar right now. you see shower activity south. that's part of the southwest flow ahead of the system gathering some of the moisture. headed toward the area. but you have to head back to western gulf. and it is this system here, i know it seems aways away. but this will be racing across the gulf over the next several hours. as we head towards eight, 10, 12 hours from now, we could be talk bing some severe weather across the area. here is a look at the skytower radar view. we throw on lightning. you can see a massive amount of lightning with this system of the extending through the gulf. so we cannot see the radar returns. but we see a lot of lightning.

with the system. i expect it to really hang on and in strength as it heads toward our area early tomorrow morning. so primary threat. high winds, with that squall line straight line winds especially. couple of isolated tornadoes as well. and flooding. we could be talk inabout 1-to-2 inches possible. here is how the radar plays out. overnight tonight. take you through midnight. i think by midnight. 1:00. we start to see a few showers or storms popping up. worst of it holds off until early in the morning. say two, 3:00 a.m. when we start to see worst of it make the way onshore. and by four, 5:00, continuing to race across the area. and by 7:00, most of it already out of here. and leaving us with a chilly sunday afternoon. details on that forecast and chilly looking seven-day forecast, coming up. >> anchor: a lot to prepare for. thank you. sweet 16 for black heritage festival.

luther king legacy has been celebrated with 10 days of activities. and events. today is it day three and fox 13 steve nichols is live downtown. to tell us what it is all about. hi steve. >> reporter: well, hi hailey. tonight, tonight, tomorrow, it is all about music. that's what you see going on behind me. day one of a two-day music festival. like i say, it goes on until, well, later tonight. and resumes at noon tomorrow. and that's when the real star power takes the stage. before it is all over there will be luncheons and dinners and gala. and marathon this morning. and, of course, monday mlk parade. martin luther king day parade in tampa and st. pete. gala and banquets are for adults. but 10 day festival aims at all ages. >> we have different villages which kids can come out and make

pop-pop corn. do coloring. face painting. we have health villages where you can come out and do a testing. for your health. and we have different food vendors as well. art vendors. >> how do you measure it is getting bigger. >> feedback. the people that come from not only out of town. not from just the city of tampa but from out of florida. from georgia. from chicago. from new york. they are all over. so we realize that, okay, we are getting bigger. not just a tampa bay thing. or florida thing. it is a national thing. >> reporter: again tomorrow, music festival continues here from noon until 7:00 p.m. then, of course, monday is the big holiday. thursday and friday events were focused on personal finance and employment issues that organizers will tell you is quite appropriate because in addition to civil rights dr. martin luther king was focused on economic disparitys and opportunities.

>> anchor: great night to be out there and great week ahead. thank you steve. >> anchor: new at 6:00. largo fearful investigate a incident at the mcdonald's on west bay drive largo. this afternoon hazmat units called to the scene in response to a gas leak. it appears the scene is cleared. now bus so far investigators are not telling us what happened. and we will bring updates as we learn more. tonight the florida highway patrol is visiting a deadly crash involving a car and bicyclist on state road 52 last night. east of colony lakes boulevard in pasco. driver of a pt cruiser was westbound on state road 52 when the bicyclist rode out in the industry in front of the driver and was hit. the 52-year-old kevin waller riding the bike. he died from the injuries. no charges were filed in this case. >> anchor: hundreds of bikers hit the road today honor the life of one of their brothers. they rolled from grace family

st. pete in memory of mathew dreamer. 31-year-old was killed on new years eve seminole. a drunk driver turned into the path of his motorcycle. friends say he was a marine, christian, and his heart was all about ministering. >> he was charismatic, full of energy. he was a believer. he was just strong in his faith. and just a solid guy. he is the kind of guy you would want to -- your daughter to date. that kind of guy. speaks a lot about the people that were here reporting him today. >> dreamer's final facebook post went viral after the death. reflected on 2015 and year ahead saying i really do not know where i will end up tonight but i know where i wind up is where imminent to be. >> anchor: in orlando florida department of law enforcement investigates a officer-involved shooting that landed a 17-year-old in the hospital. and it happened shortly after midnight when police stopped a stolen dodge charger on north lane. officers approached, the driver tried to put it in reverse and

nearly hitting one of the police officers. weapon. driver is 15-year-old travon far away. taken to the hospital with a gun shot wound. but expected to be okay. and police are still looking for two other men that were in that car. and the officer that fired his leave. >> anchor: they are beautifying the city one house at a time. today local students are giving back to the part of tampa where they live and learn. neighborhoods surrounding usf give it a facelift with help of paint and patience and community pride. and we talked to one man that said this help came when he the story. >> reporter: from psychiatric downsideing to chopping down weeds. this home off 22nd street was in need of long overdue tlc but owner is blind and has not been able to do much of the work

>>i needed to get the mold, i needed to get it cleaned up. and eventually i have been doing it. >> reporter: on saturday he got some help. dozens of student volunteers teamed up with university area cdc to handwash the house. mow the lawn. and remove trash. they are cleaning up more than 20 impoverished areas around the university of south florida. >> what we are trying to do is show the community residents we care and we want to see the community change for better. for volunteers like david wilson chance to give back to hometown. and make his community a better reflection of who he is. >> when people go in your room they think this is you. described you. i want to be described as a person, great environment. and got to tackle it one house, one road, wherever, at a time. >> reporter: volunteers say it is not just a one day event. community garden is a perfect example. here residents have access to free vegetables and cooking class learning how to prepare healthy meals for the family.

>> anchor: if you are feeling adventurous go python hunting. theory. florida python challenge underway. more than $16,000 will be awarded to hunters that capture the most and the largest pythons. and it started at noon today. runs through february 14th. and the goal of the hunt is to reduce the python population. they are not native to florida and pose a threat to wild life and to pets. >> anchor: meals on wheels had special delivery foes hundreds of people homebound in tampa. today they were produce on wheels. more than 100 volunteers brought fresh fruit and vegetables to 700 people in the city. for some the closest grocery store may be 3 miles way. even then medical problems can make it difficult positive them to shop. and the executive director said goal is to help people remain healthy and independent. >> folks love. this this is a new program of

>> anchor: if you decide on take a joy ride in a bright yellow school bus you will not get away with t 1, 13-year-old student in central florida learns that lesson the hard way. tracy jason has the story. >> reporter: here at the corner of whiteman and beacher when police finally caught up with and stopped a 13-year-old driving a stolen lake county school bus. felony traffic stop that landed the boy in a juvenile detention center. a traffic stop almost 5 miles from where the youngster began his criminal joy ride. here i am at the bus depot where some of the lake county school buses park. you can see them here. according to arrest affidavit bus driver parked the bus right here. to use the restroom inside. while she is inside. the route manager actually hears a bang. sees the bus take off. female bus driver comes back

engthey called leesburg police. >> we do not get a lot of stolen school buss to begin with. so it is out of the norm. >> reporter: leesburg police spokesman gave us pictures that show some damage. scratches and small dents, to the side door and window. of the bus he said the boy stole. police estimate $1000 in damage. this spokeswoman for the school district said the boy hit parking poles in the lot. sent us a statement. quick think engof the route manager saved the day. she used our gps and worked with law enforcement to track down the bus and assure its quick and safe return. >> it is concerning any time that juveniles commit a crime. particularly stealing a school bus. and where a lot of damage could be inflicted as a result of that. so it is very concerning. we are glad he was taken into custody without any significant injury to or anyone else. >> reporter: because he is a juvenile they cannot tell us much about him. we do not know his school.

here is a satellite and radar view. you see shower activity trying to make the way. into the state. this is the main batch of rain. this is, again, well back to the west. has not made the way to new orleans yet. but in about eight, nine hours or so, it will already be knocking on our door, pretty much be moving through the area within the next 12 hours. so quick moving system. caught in that subtropical jet stream. severe risk tonight. you can see the entire area highlighted in a slight risk for severe weather. you do not get that often in florida. so we know it means business when we get slight risk. so look at the storm headlines. few storms as early as midnight. rolling in ahead of the system. but the main batch. the worst of the weather. looks to arrive 2:00 or 3:00. start to make the way through four or 5:00. and 7 a.m. maybe clearing the area. high wind threat is primary

talking about wind gusts with some of the storms, potentially above 40 or 50 miles an hour. severe weather threat is there for higher wind gusts. do not go boating. not a "good day" for boating. seas 10 to 14 feet. 75 the high today. 60 the low. both of those above average. temperatures. 68 in brandon. 70 newport richey. 70 brooksville. 72 in sea bring. dewpoints in the low 60s. mid 50s as you head inland. mow areas will see dewpoints rise out ahead of the system. and over the next few hours. and winds not bad right now. and again we will see winds starting to rip and roar heading through the overnight hours. even tomorrow we will see wind gusts beyond this system getting occasionally to 30 miles an hour. very cold air across the northern half of the country. we start to see some of the cold air make the way south. now as we head into the early portions of the week.

warning or severe thunderstorm warning or weather radio. >> anchor: download the app if you have not done it. >> weather: from today riverview time lapse. beautiful day. really just one of those perfect winter days. temperatures low 70s. and plenty of sunshine. light breeze. so different than from what is coming tonight. look at the moisture on the increase. look at the moisture setting off the coast here. this may start to move in. as we head through the next couple of hours. i don't expect severe weather from. this but a sign that atmosphere is starting to moisten up. you look west. and here is where our system is, and this is headed toward new orleans right now. and extends southward. you do not see southern extension because radar cannot mean that far out. but if we look at the lightning. you can see the lightning strikes extend you go all the way south through the gulf.

we know likely a squall line setting up. as that continues to work eastward. in this moist rich atmosphere here. we will start to see some of the storms potentially strong, potentially on the severe side. this is a look at the threats we are looking. for mainly high wind damage. that appears to be the biggest threat for the overnight hours into early tomorrow morning. and especially if that squall line does develop. so straight line winds, typically what we would see with that. couple of isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. could be a good amount of thunder and lightning tonight. and could see one to, maybe, 2 inches of rain as these storms roll through. this is how future cast plays out. overnight tonight. freeze it 1:00 a.m. you see showers setting off shore. making the way onshore. and by two, 3:00 a.m. heavier band stronger storms, especially up and down the nature coast are working n 4 or 5:00 making the way through tampa through the bay area,

this year is first time we have brought in a mobile trainer to our actual airport. and are actually able to do the scenarios using our equipment and our trucks. in the past we have gone through mcgill air force base. down to homestead last year. >> familiar with the area using their equipment. being able to burn more than they normally get to burn. all of that is just all training. we need to have that training. >> we have talked and discussed our preparation. and we put those discussions and plans in to play and see how they really work. >> everybody was working well. you knock down the first pan like we want jadtoday they did well. they have learned a couple of things. couple of pointers here and there. to make things better.
