how much they won and how much they lost. >> good evening. >> we're glad to have you with us. family and friends of the duet couple killed by that tornado this weekend, now picking up the pieces. it was a deadly ef-2 twister that claimed two lives early sunday morning. miraculously, five other family members surriffed -- survived inside that mobile home. how are they doing? >> reporter: well, good news. three of those five family members are out of the support. -- hospital. steven wilson jr. and as well as two young boys are back home. two young girls had more serious injuries, but when you look out here, the fact that they are alive is truly a miracle. tonight, another hard night as family members searched through

stuffed animals with matted-down fur. an upside down ll electrical socket. a jean shirt, all pieces that were in the home when the family went to bed saturday night. collecting what's salvageable is an emotionally draining task. it's all they have left of 58-year-old steven wilson sr. and kitty wilson. the tornado tore through early sunday morning. >> when the daylight come, it was very, very prizing, very upsetting, to me, to find out that he had -- had had deceased. >> reporter: they are just waiting to wake up from this bad dream. >> just nice, nice people, you know? and do, help you any way they could. >> reporter: steven wilson jr., his three kids and another young family member survived. they're all smiles in this photo, thankful to be alive. sadly, they don't know yet what happened to their grandparents.

of wood and aluminum siding, nikki pington came up the road. >> i don't know the family. vinever met them before. i just wanted them to know that people in the community, we care and we are thinking of them. this is the time for us to rally around them and do what we can. >> reporter: while she doesn't know the family, she says she knows the grief they are going through. she lost her mother just a few years ago. >> that was their mom and dad -- that's what hittings home, you know? to know that someone lost their lives right here, due to mother nature, it's very hard. >> reporter: and that woman is just one of so many people trying to find ways to help this family. in fact, they have received close to $20,000 in online donations to help pay for medical bills as well as burial costs. >> we are so sorry for them. >> damage from the tornado still being cleaned up in sarso the a. people out there all day today

was destroyed and others have roof damage. a lot of those homes, as you will see, have the blue tarps on them. insurance adjusters were in the area all day. sarasota county offered resources to help. >> we need to do our best to help them and make sure that they feel safe in their own homes and conduct those repairs as fast as we can. >> call your insurances agent right away if you have any storm damage. one building on siesta key is unlivable, since the tornado ripped off the roof. it's the excellier that was hit hard. there was a permanent sky light on the top level. luckily, nobody hurt. but everybody has had to leave building 5. we have been told it's going to take months to repair that roof. >> it's pretty chilly now, but -- if you don't like it, you are in trouble. it's getting even colder here. cold weather shelters are already open. we are talking cold, cold?

kind of a series of cold nights. and actually, tonight is not the coldest night of the series. i think actually tomorrow night is going to be colder, under clear skies, light winds and radiational cooling. tonight we have high clouds from the west. made for a great sunset. overnight, the cold air continues to filter in from the north and the northwest. a bit of wind around. temperatures have been falling steadily. 49 in tampa. 50 in lakeland. wachula and frost proof. 53 in st. pete. as i mentioned, there is some wind around. temperatures are fairly uniform. tomorrow night, winds may go calm. in fact, they are already calm well to our north. and the dew points are very low. this is indicative of an air mass that is coming out of canada and is diving all the way south to cuba, whined an active cold front that brought the severe weather over the weekend.

except brooksville. why is brooksville always so cold? they are sheltered and they are a low spot. brooksville goes calm. everybody else has wind. so later on tonight, temperatures in the bay area that will be dropping into the 30s and 40s. as i mentioned, tomorrow night, even colder. less wind. 38 in tampa. 40 sarasota and 29 in brooksville. we will talk more about the cold and the next threat of severe weather, that's coming up at 10:20. >> thank you. we have a news ark letter out of tampa where there has been a deadly motorcycle accident on del mabry, north of tampa boulevard. tpd is saying the motorcyclist lost control. no other vehicles involved. but police haven't yet released the identity of the victim. >> a small plane makes a hard landing at venice airport. it ends up sliding off the runway. nothing real serious. one person on board did suffer some injuries.

>> he spent years under cover, safe. but tonight a tampa police detective needs help. he is battling cancer. josh casio is live at tpd headquarters with more on what they are doing to try to get him the treatment that he needs. how nice, all of his comrades rallying around him like that. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. he is living in puerto rico. but he needs to be here in tampa. right now, there is a large online fund-raising effort to fly him back here to tampa so he can get to moffitt. as his family and friends tell us, he has always had other people's backs. but now he needs folks to have his back. officer alex castro wears badge number 674 with pride. before him, it was worn by his uncle, jose feliciano. >> it's a constant reminder

but you can win even if you don't have all six winning numbers. they had 73,000 sets of numbers. so surely they won something, right? >> reporter: would think so. strength in numbers, right? well, technically, they did win some money. but considering the buy-in was $500 per person, was those winnings enough to cover their investment isn't answer, no. not by a long shot. here's how it all worked out. it took them the better part of three days to scab the tickets. they had enough numbers to win $13,275. but there were 292 people in the pool. so when you divide that by 292, you get $45.46 per person. which means after you consider the $500 buy-in, each member lost over $4 and00. but they immediately took the

you get energy from the northwest and moisture from the southwest. and sometimes, it produces a severe weather event. we have another front coming our wion friday. different. but it does bear watching. hopefully not as strong as one we had over the weekend. the winters almost always wetter than average. the fronts go by and the risk is high for severe weather, mainly overnight and during the early-morning hours. i gotta tell you, we got a lot of great feedback on the skytower radar. you get audible alerts. so if there is a tornado watch or warning issued, it is app will tell you that, with my voice, basically. so many people, you know, you wake up at 3:00, you hear the alert, you turn on the t. we are on. it's a good combination. download that on the iphone or the google play store. we have 40s and 50s in the

we will see a continuation of very active weather because of the positioning of the subtropical jet. and you get areas of low pressure riding along that. here's another one on friday. this may go up the east coast and be the first big snowstorm of the winter season from the mid-atlantic states. the model's going nuts with very heavy snow. this upcoming weekend. for us, what we will be watching for any one of these storms is tornadoes. we have been alluding to this, i think, countless times. the average winter in florida, we get 12 tornadoes. in elnino, we had 83, 82. the benchmark, 60 tornados in the state during the winter of 97-98. up to this point, we have had 6. so, you can figure out the numbers yourself. we have a ways to go. it is not over yet.
