right now at six - right now at 6:00 the pirates are here. we're taking you inside gaa reallya twooex from the parade route to the crew taking over the -- gaa reallya parade route to the people taking over the city. >> to have some drama along the way. >> crowds are spilling out the doors on the campaign trail in iowa tonight. and a spike in turnout there could shake up the race. >> announcer: from tampa bay's number one news station. this is the fox 13 6:00 news. >> good evening thanks for being with us i'm lloyd source.
6:01 pm
first tonight after taking the bay the gang of pirates boulvard. they were cheered on by now the celebrations move to the park. that's where evan lambert is live tonight's. >> hey, hayley, it has been a long day of celebrating with those pirates that took over the city. everybody has their beads now and that celebration as you said has moved here but really all throughout downtown tampa as you take a look at some of the crowds here still dispersing after the parade wrapped up just moments ago. now dozens of floats rolling down bay shore boulvard then making their way downtown. people packed in up to the barricades to get a chance beads their best pirate attire to enjoy the floats and performances along the route. now we found people from right here in tampa, and others game from as far away as germany to witness another gasparilla festival invade the bay.
6:02 pm
we have been like to the place where the ship came in it and was great. now to the prayed. it's really nice to see it -- parade. >> it's really nice. i came down here to for the gasparilla festival and i went in there and bought this costume so i came down to gasparilla today just to make sure i got my money's worth out of this costume. >> in this costumes have been pretty elaborate. not everyone dressed up but those that are really outfitted head to toe. as you can see just moments ago the fear the still continuing out here. people having fun backing those restaurants and bars. hayley, back to you. >> truly a day unlike any other. thanks, estian. >> as evan showed us the parade is wrapping up there are hundreds of units in this year's gasparilla parade but one of the most noticeable parts is the invasion of pirates. this morning fox 13's crystal clark.
6:03 pm
takes to take over the city. >> reporter: before the pirates arrived by scene, they have to put on their game faces. >> it's kind of cold. >> we add pencil and the different colors and then the blood. >> reporter: getting made up, getting ugly then your family seeing you after you've done it it's always fun. >> reporter: these tough looking guys spend hours in a hair and makeup tent before invading the city of tampa. it's a tradition at the tampa yacht and country club. since 1904, myst jose gasparilla by donning pirate costumes. >> we've been doing it for like 34 years this is like my fourth costume. you just put a mixed bag of stuff together just to make it look radical and have a good time. >> unlike the 200,000 people along the parade routes they'll be catching their beads from the bay. nearly 1,000 pirate boats are apart of this year's flotilla. boaters say it's the only
6:04 pm
>> i think the best part is definitely just being like with all my friends and family. just seeing everybody dressed up. >> reporter: it's a day when the drinks are flowing aplenty and there's bootie and a shortage of things to see. >> it's great people watching. >> in tampa, crystal clark, fox 13 news. the mystic crew is also founded with crediting the gasparilla parade. polls are shifting tonight and monday's caucus could deliver a big surprise. ted cruz appears to be slipping and marco rubio is surging. our political editor craig patrick is following the candidates and joining us from now aims, iowa. craig? >> reporter: yeah, lloyd, we're seeing changes in the polls we're seeing big changes in the crowds as well. we're tracking north iowa. heading east to a lot of college towns where there are large clusters of younger voters who can certainly swing the races in both parties and and the candidates surely know it. this is where many of them
6:05 pm
this is where the once front-runner ted cruz is trying to regain his mojo. that's why he was campaigning in ames earlier today and yes, cruz has slipped in the polls yes his performance in the fox debate has been canned here in iowa a rough night was the headline of the day. but head aside he still has a very strong ground game and you can see it once you go behind the scenes beyond the shot of cruz to the crowds that are just spilling out the door winding down the halls. there were people who could not even get into an overflow room to watch this rally on a video monitor. so ted cruz among others certainly turning a lot of people out. we're seeing a huge spike in interest. but what cruz and all the other candidates really need to pay attention to in particular would be the people who are not at these rallies but in these college towns and there is a good reason for that. take a look. >> are you going to caucus?
6:06 pm
>> who are you for? >> i haven't really decided zblet are you going go to caucus? >> i am. >> who are you for. >> don't know yet i'm going to finish doing my reading this weekend. >> are you leaning one way or the other? >> um, i'm not quite sure yet. >> reporter: we asked that question over and over again got that exact same answer more than a dozen times. so while this campaign has played out for months here in the state of iowa have you a lot of people, particularly late deciders, younger voters who are just now keying in many of them say they will head to the caucuses not fully decided which way they will go. and so that's why the campaigns are bearing down here. so lloyd, that's one of the misconsections that people may have about iowa that you can trust the polls. those polls can break late we learned that from rick san forrium. >> how is the democratic race shaping up. does hillary clinton still have the inside track?
6:07 pm
the numbers and according to the forecast models from 538 and others yes she does the official 538 model gives her around a 75% chance of winning on monday night. she is up in most of the polls. but bernie sanders has momentum. he's doing particularly well among college students and that's why hillary clinton is coming to ames today as well. spending time at iowa state university. you see the same thing here you saw with ted cruz. you see people spilling up three flights of stairs and winding down hallways just to get in. some of them could not get in could not have a view of the event at all. it shows you the level of interest here. but a lot of people we found in that crowd are not supporting hillary clinton. they are still persuadable and that's why what happens over the next 24 to 36 hours is absolutely critical. i think to who will win in both parties. iowa.
6:08 pm
live. craig, thanks. still ahead on the fox 13 6:00 news, helping kids be -- beat bullies without throwing a bunch. >> she -- punch. see who is behind this special event in the bay area through music. >> hey, paul. hi, lloyd, turned out to be a great day today. lots of sunshine. the only real factor we had today was some high clouds coming across the sky. take a look, ultimately these high clouds produce credible optics in the sky. check this out nice sunset, looks pretty good.

okay, thank god. >> the viewer who sent us this cell phone video of the flames couldn't believe the driver 18 year navy veteran michael smith was alive. >> i'm very lucky. >> smith tells us his brakes went out as he was getting off the park street exit ramp. >> i put my foot on the brake nothing. pedal to the floor, nothing. >> who was going through realized that the brakes were out? >> oh, crap. i mean, just fear. know. didn't know what to do. >> reporter: that's when he says he lost control coming around a turn and crashed. as his car burst into flames he said he had one thing on his mind. >> just get out. i undid my seat belt the passenger window was gone so right there. >> reporter: you can hear later. >> i'm just so glad i didn't hit anybody. i'm glad i'm okay and i didn't hurt anybody else.
6:15 pm
smith says he was on his way to the gas station when this all happened. he says he feels lucky he didn't make it there because this fire could have been a lot more dangerous if he had a full tank. smith said he didn't even have to call 9-1-1 after the crash because a highway patrol trooper was sit something a parking lot just yards away. >> he is lucky. paul is in for mike tonight dressed as a pirate. >> he's out having fun. >> he's at that age where you just have to go. i got to go. it's the end of the world. which is okay. >> right. i know -- >> there's always next year. no mug shots of him at this point. >> that we know of. >> but tonight is young. good weather today we're good. nice high clouds. the time lapse was good. we talked about this last night really the only issue was going to be just increasing high clouds through the day. the forecast really worked out nicely. it's a cool shot. these high clouds 202000, 25,000 feet up are along for
6:16 pm
they're just riding along that vast tropical jet stream which is pretty much the ultimate headliner when it comes to el nio. it's a fast jet stream over us and eventually that's going to bring us some rain at some point. today though a nice day. 68 for a high. the average high is 71 , and the low temperature of 50 . the average at 53 . whipping along. we just continue to see very strong winds above us. they're blowing about 150 miles per hour from west southwest to east northeast. tomorrow, i think it will be a day just like today. the only difference is this cold high is going to drift to the east. we get on the back side of the high that means tomorrow the winds will turn to the southeast and maybe the south by later in the day. so for that reason alone we should see temperatures tomorrow topping off in the low to mid-70s. so pretty good sunday coming up. again the only issue could be for a time it may be
6:17 pm
but overall that's not a big deal. just kind of a cool view as we expand on this. once again the winds are coming way out of the pacific, blowing over the gulf of mexico they'll stay this way for a couple more days. eventually later on next week, i'm talking thursday and friday there will be an approaching cold front. that front may give us a day or two of rain. before the front arrives temperatures go up a little bit. we could hit 80 by tuesday or wednesday. right now temperatures are good we're holding in the mid-60s. 63 in brooksville, 64 land o'lakes, 63 westly chapel. dade city is at 62 , 64 sarasota, 63 in venice inland you have 50s and low 60s any way you slice it it's pretty good day. watch the high as it begins to move away. so tomorrow all we see is the patchwork sky mixture of clouds and sun. maybe a couple showers out
6:18 pm
rain chances should be less than 10%. that's all we really have is a mixture of clouds and sun. 65 the dew point, 39 , winds are calm. tonight should not be as cool as it was early today because of the presence of all those high clouds. maybe some patchy fog. clouds and rain across the pacific northwest. just surges of pacific moisture moving on shore that's not going to end any time soon. dallas today 75 , atlanta hit 63 that's pretty good. nashville 64 , new york city more melting snow and 39 . columbus, 56 and rally at 51 so tonight temperatures about where they should be for this time of year in the 40s and low 50s. and tomorrow we may go a couple degrees above average in the low to mid-70s every place you go. moderating temperatures on the map we stay quiet tomorrow. this is monday and we warm into the upper 70s. then here comes tuesday on the map and that's no big change.
6:19 pm
it in the corner of your tv set that's the one that should ride along the subtropical jet may produce severe weather in the deep south by the middle of the week all it will do for us give us a day or two of rain. that will commence thursday and last into friday. then cooler or colder weather for the weekend. so tonight all in all pretty good. some high clouds and seasonable down to 53 . tomorrow a day, a lot like today just go lots of clouds but there will be periods of sunshine and mild. back up to 72 . the outlook for monday is variably cloudy and mild. high temperatures in the mid-70s if you're boating winds will stay southeast. light chop on the bay. next high tide at 6:03. we'll have the seven-day forecast coming up at about 6:45. hey, kev. >> hey, paul. it's all-star weekend for the nhl and nfl if you want to call it. that ben bishop making his very first trip to the all-stars he will be on the

to kind of experience the whole thing. something as a kid you watch. skills competition should be a lot of fun. i remember always watching that enjoying. that looking forward to that. and obviously the game is be a lot of fun. competition? >> i think everybody likes the hardest slap shot. stop sometimes. whoever wins won't feel as bad i scored on them earlier this year. it shows the fans how hard some of these guys shoot the puck and the fastest skater and the shooting accuracy is pretty good. think it's all fun. >> the probowl is also tomorrow. plenty of bucs on the field. five got the call out west. now this game isn't going to resemble anything like the games we've seen all season. players there to kind of have fun and really avoid injury at all cost. the practices have been really slow paced. jameis winston was a latest addition this week and enjoying every weekend of it.

oregon prompted a mass exodus from that federal wildlife refuge here in byrnes and even the group's leader has reportedly told his followers to go on home but four people still refuse to give up this protest over federal land policies and this normally quiet ton remains undated with law enforcement officers, media, and an overall sense of unease as well. that is because other groups calling themselves constitutional rights advocates have put out a call to action. asking for more like-minded activists to come to byrnes to support the cause if not at the refuge, which is surrounded by federal agents then in the town. most residents say they wish the group hadn't brought weapons but say they do support the protest over how much land here in the west is federal property. in fact, more than half the land here in oregon is federally controlled. rancher tom davis says states and cities lose out economically. he says it's often a challenge dealing with the federal government on issues such as grazing rights, and he says he hopes this
