6:00 news. >> good evening i'm mark wilson. >> i'm kelly ring. we're getting our first look at the pinellas county mother charged after her six-year-old son killed her newborn baby girl. kathleen steele, 62, and a single mother of three young kids. she had her first court appearance today. and fox 13's aaron mesmer is live at the courthouse with a lot more on this tragic story. aaron? >> reporter: kathleen steele barely said anything more than a few one word answers today during her first court appearance. she let her attorney do most of the talking. but her neighbors are also talking. we're learning a little more about when trouble really might have started brewing. >> miss steele you are charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. >> reporter: we may never know what kathleen steele was thinking standing in court charged in the death of her two week old baby. her next door neighbor has a lot

it's sad to see that -- i don't even know how to describe what happened. >> reporter: greg burton has known steele for years. through the 62-year-old's three late in life pregnancies. one of which was the subject of a reality show on tlc. her last two kids were conceived using her dead husband's frozen sperm. >> just odd. that's odd. >> reporter: barton thinks it wasn't until last month that things started to unravel after a fire at their reddington beach home. >> i think she was coping prett well up until the fire. >> days later she gave birth to her baby named kathleen. steele left all three kids in the car monday when she went into a cell phone store for more than 30 minutes. detectives say baby kathleen started screaming. and steele's six-year-old son frankie beat his 13day old sister to death. >> i just can't believe franky would actually harm the baby in the way he did. >> reporter: the pinellas county sheriff couldn't believe it either.

ever seen. >> terrible tragedyor everybody that's involved. >> reporter: after steele's hearing where she was held on $100,000 bond, her attorney discussed her state of mind. >> i found her to be certainly devastated by this. you can only imagine the shock and difficult time it is in this situation. >> reporter: and it's difficult for her neighbors to process too. >> i never saw any evidence of child abuse or anything. she did yell at them disciplinary wise. >> there was no way to predict something this heart breaking would ever happen. >> i thought it was very tragic situation that occurred. >> reporter: sometime after that fire had happened the family moved in to a hotel and then a rental home. during that period the baby was hurt and the sheriff said the child protective services was looking into that. however of course now the baby has passed away and that investigation unfortunately is over. as for the other two children they are now in foster care.

((kelly--ots)) vladimir putin fires his chief of staff today. the most high profiled power shuffle that the russian government has seen in years. he not only was putin's chief of staff but his closest ally. he was at ivanoff's request because he had been doing the job too long. but analysts say putin is trying to bring in a younger entourage. tensions between russia and ukraine have reached a boiling point along the crimean border. both countries are sending in reinforcements and new deployments as fox's greg pal kot tells us tonight from london that moscow is promising repercussions following the deaths of two soldiers.
