the fox 13 11:00 news starts now. starting with this. police in auburndale say these men stole five cars, five cars from a dealership on thursday night. investigators don't think this is a first for the group here. just two weeks ago deputies caught six thieves breaking into a car dealership in inverness. as kellie cowan authorities believe their dealing with a crime ring here. >> reporter: this is a familiar scene at car dealerships across central florida right now. surveillance video showing thieves smashing through glass doors, going straight for keys to cars in the lot, and then driving off with them. this one happened last thursday at kelly automotive in auburndale. these burglars took off with five cars. investigators say this wasn't their first time.

it's a continuing pattern. >> reporter: just two weeks ago, deputies in inverness captured six young men, three of them juveniles, caught red-handed doing the same thing. they'd also been on surveillance video from dealerships and other businesses across central florida. the burglaries didn't stop once they went to jail. >> from those cases a number of arrests have been made, but there are still a number of other people that are responsible for some of the other thefts that are around the central florida area. >> reporter: investigators believe the thieves in all the videos are part of a much larger crime ring, hitting dealerships from central florida's west coast to the east coast. a plea on kelley's automotive facebook page helped to recover all five stolen vehicles. both authorities and business owners want help putting the rest of the ring behind bars. >> for the benefit of everyone out there that's, you know, doing the things the right way,

to find them, put them behind bars and do whatever is it necessary so that we don't center to spend extra money to try and keep things secure. >> reporter: kellie cowan, fox sp news. new at 11:00 another wrong-way driving arrest that makes it four in the last three days. they say angela was driving south in the northbound lanes when she hit another car. deputies tell us her blood al three times the legal limit. she was charged with driving under the influence with property damage. a drunk driver is blamed for taking the life of a bay area teacher. caroline died in the hospital today. she was on life support since early sunday morning. she and her boyfriend were driving home from a date in pinellas park when police say 31-year-old bryce mccloud ran a red light on park boulevard and

sign taught music in five pinellas elementary schools and the boyfriend teaches music at miles and shaw elementary. he's still in critical condition. mcclaoud is charged with dui manslaughter. police are bracing for what could be another long, hot summer night of unrest in milwaukee, wisconsin. milwaukee's mayor issued a 10:00 p.m. curfew for teenagers. >> expanding that to include 17-year-olds. the trouble began on after a police officer shot and killed an african-american man who reportedly had a gun. fox's matt finn is in milwaukee. >> reporter: the milwaukee mayor is pleading for peace in the streets as police prepare for what could be day three of violent riots. >> i'm calling on every single resident of this city, do not do further damage to this great neighborhood. >> reporter: the milwaukee county sheriff says the riots

issues. >> we have inescapable poverty in milwaukee. it's the sixth poorest community in america. you have massive black unemployment at 32%. you have a failing k-12 public education system that's one of the worst in the nation. >> reporter: riot police squared off with violent crowds for the second night in milwaukee. it pushed into the early hours of monday morning. police report 30 incidents of shots fired on sunday alone. at least one person was treat it brought the total to 12 officers injured, some seen limping away after being hit by bricks. a total of 7 businesses have been burned or destroyed in the riots. >> this is the police. leave the area. >> reporter: officers dodge bricks, bullets and bottles thrown by a crowd brimming with anger over the death of 23-year-old sylville smith, a young black suspect fatally shot by a black officer on saturday.

fully loaded semiautomatic gun and did not comply with an order to drop his weapon when he fled on foot during the fatal traffic stop. he had a lengthy criminal record. he was arrested on multiple felony drug and robbery charges. the victim's father spoke out at the scene of his son's death admitting he was a bad influence. >> i have to blame myself for a lot of things, too, because your hero is your dad. i played a very big part in my family's role model being on the street. >> matt finn reporting there. that officer who is 24 years old has been placed on desk duty pending the investigation. police say there is body camera video of that shooting that wil eventually be released. plans to build a zipline add venture park in largo hit a snag. many residents say they just don't want it. the plans are to put it in the highlands recreation complex. that's a public park. fox 13's josh cascio is live in

many people have so many concerns. josh. >> reporter: yeah, cynthia, whether it's the noise, potential traffic, potential drop in home values, neighbors say they have a number of reasons they don't want that ropes course here in the highlands rec spleks. many showed up to city hall tonight to voice their opinion at a public meeting. at times that meeting got pretty heated. residents are just not sold on the tree course here at the highlands rec complex. but just not here. in fact, one nearby homeowner went as far as to put a sign in opposition complete with the international symbol for a word i can't say on tv, but you probably know what it is. it's that one-finger salute. it's based in bradenton. they want to put a rope course and zip line in the park. here is the citizen reaction. listen to how heated it was. >> it's going to be in their backyard.

disturbed with all of this starting at 8:30 every morning. >> the park doesn't have the infrastructure to support the number of people that they are estimating is going to come. >> i believe to make recreational opportunities available to family members particularly, it's pretty important in our community. >> you heard that last guy there. there were a few people in favor there, mostly opposed but a few in favor. the city is on board saying it would bring in $80,000 a year. the city would pay nothing. a vote on the project is scheduled for next month, september 6th. of course, iscynthia, we will sy on top of this very hotly contested debate. back to you. >> yeah. i'm sure there's lots of opinions on both sides, and you can you understand what those people are saying, too. thanks, josh. speaking of opinions and hotly contested, onto this now.

primaries started in hillsborough county. lots of sign waving and shouting going on there. there are early signs tonight that turnout for this election is higher than normal as floridians decide races for local offices and u.s. senate. evan axelbank who is always all over politics and live at the county center in downtown tampa. that's one of the 16 early voting sites in hillsborough. what's the story tonight? >> reporter: two years ago turnout is up 25% and from four years ago the turnout is up 50%. that's incredible. we spoke to voters all day long in carrollwood and east tampa. many say it's a high interest election cycle because it teams like a lot is at stake. many hope republican marco rubio will remain in the senate because they want him to run for president again.

mantle. then we also heard from democrats who supported patrick murphy, a congressman from palm beach, because of the president's endorsement of him. others say they supported alan greyson for that very reason. they want to go against the grain. either way, early voting has become a hit with 1900 people voting today compared to only 1250 on the first day two years ago. >> you want to beat the crowds, and there's no reason to wait. if there's issues with you identification, you have time to really correct those issues. >> i think you should come out and vote, period. i just voted early because i'll be working on election day. >> one of the beauties of early voting is that you can go to any early voting site, and we will print your ballot ho demand. we produce your specific balance allot at the 16 early vote sites around the county, which is different from election day where you must vote in the precinct that you reside in because that's where your ballot

>> reporter: after this first day of early voting, hillsborough county is on pace for 26,000 to cast early votes in the county before it ends. nearly 50,000 have already mailed in ballots, so that means about 800,000 are registered and 6% have already voted and we have weeks of early voting to go and plus we have the primary day itself. there are 16 early voting sites around the county. they will be open until the sunday before primary is tuesday, august 30th. now you have 13 days of early voting left and one day off and then the primary on august 30th, chris. >> they make it as convenient as possible for voters these days. thanks, evan. next at 11:00, gators are just everywhere in florida. >> if there's a bundle, there's a gator. this is the time of year when the predators of the swamp become the prey. >> kind of controlled chaos for a little while. you can't muscle them in.

the way of people coming here to pay their respects and trampling on what this is, you know, i got no issues. >> reporter: randy ross is the campaign chair person in orange county. he said the office was never meant to distract from what happened at the nightclub. >> this isn't our intention. we recognize the act of islamic terrorism hits the community. >> reporter: e campaign struggles with the demographics, ross said the location of the office has nothing to do with reaching out to those groups, and it's not meant as an insult either. >> i'm an openly gay man chairing this campaign. there was no strategy involved in that. as a matter of fact, it probably would have been better based on how some of the reaction to not locate there. >> that was dana jay reporting. trump's campaign said they didn't pick that location. rather, the space was donated to them, and that is why the office

i'm heartbroken. i'm heartbroken. my home, this is where i grew up. >> a lot of sadness in southern louisiana as they're now bracing for the possibility of more rain and some people are wondering when they will get to see what's left of their homes. sad stuff. tonight some 10,000 people are still in shelters, hotels are sold out, more than 20,000 have been evacuated. a state of emergency remains in effect the national guard is helping to rescue people who are still stranded. national guard using high water vehicles to get in there along with boats. so far, again, they've rescued more than 20,000 people, but some people are still refusing to leave their homes. >> any opportunity to get out, whether it be the high water vehicles, the boats, they need to get out. this is a long-term thing. the river has yet to crest. it's only going to get worse. so they really need to take heed

they get. >> the flooding is blamed for at least six deaths. they found a seventh body today, but the coroner has to make the official determination as to whether it was flooding. flooding on interstates 10 and 12 causes big problems for drivers trying to escape all that water. storms we had today moved along. they were mostly qianed to the coastal counties. there's a quick shower by downtown st. pete by mid afternoon. storms are cranked up west of the coast and big storms near sarasota. a little hint of a shelf cloud moving over st. pete as well. so an active sky tonight. things are quiet now. the winds were up in speed, and it's all really this time of year about the wind direction and speed. today winds were generally from

breeze. the storms don't hang around the coast and don't meet the sea breeze and get going late in the day near the coast and move along. that's the case tomorrow with rain coverage, you know, 40% to chances as you trek inland.rain- now, it's a quiet night. sprinkles are out over the gulf and they're done. there's active thunderstorms off the coast around dinnertime. two rounds of rain in sarasota. things are quiet now. the wind arrows tell the story. the peninsula tomorrow. not much of a sea breeze. you see the winds all going this way. nothing coming in from the west. i don't expect much in the way of afternoon storms, a few along the coast. they move along. then they're out to sea by certainly this time tomorrow night the, the same deal on wednesday with storms roaming across the coast from east to west. 85 in tampa. no rain, so at 11:00 it's warm. 80 in st. pete, 82 in plant city.

northern counties. sarasota had a couple of rounds of rain. 79 now. myakka city is 77. inland, upper 70s and low 80s. we become clear tonight, and we watch for late-day storms tomorrow. a few storms near the coast could be heavy. another round of storms coming up on wednesday as our classic summer pattern continues. that will be the story on thursday as well. now significant change. best chance of rain tomorrow along our coastal counties, about 50%. inland. watching a strong strop cal wave. the wind data shows that rotation and for that reason the hurricane center now has a 70% chance of development during the next five days. the news is good, though. even if this becomes fiona, it's heading probably, probably out to sea as a fish storm and not heading for land. we'll watch it and see how it behaves. tonight it's clear, if it's not clear already, down to 78. afternoon storms tomorrow.

we've had a lot of lightning strikes in the area lately, and this time a volusia county man is lucky to be alive after being hit by lightning on sunday. he was riding an atv picking up umbrellas he rents on the beach whether he was hit.

atv at about the same time a beach safety officer's jeep was also hit by the lightning. that officer is fine, but the jeep no longer drivable. >> it can be really dangerous. it's open season again for one of florida's natural predators. first day of gator hunting season. they got more than 14,000 applications for 5,000 permits. so we tagged along with sean stevenson as he hit the water at sunset. >> as it should see some movement. they'll move off the bank. they're usually up in the grass up on the banks during the daytime, and they will move out. you watch them and see their heads come up. they move out. they're coming out here to feed at night. >> sean says he's been hunting for the last five years. measured about 10 1/2 feet. - this new video out of jacksonville shows a real fit a shoplifter had. she walked into a shell station

several candy bars. when she refused to put them back, the clerk locked the frond door. the woman started to trash the store there. you see her throwing items onto the floor, chips, candy bars, probably pork skins in there and anything she got her hands on. once she was done emptying the shelves, she left. i guess the clerk had unlocked the door by that point. deputies are hoping that this video will lead to her arrest. scott, cleanup on aisle 6. >> was this a 3-year-old doing in? my interleague play at the trop tonight as they return back home for the first of ten straight. a champion is indeed crowned. our camp karaoke series comes to a slows sadly.
