6:02 pm
polite conversation, the buyer became a thief and ran off with the ipad. >> lakeland has always been a safe place. i shutter to think something like that on a smaller scale happened to us but we could have been a lot less fortunate. >> he's right. according to sheriff judd, cory just crossed paths with a killer. six days later it happened to another man held at gunpoint and robbed by the same then just three days later, the robbery scheme turned deadly when 21-year-old jeffrey morrow tried to defend himself. that's when more owe got out on the passengers side with a shotgun andman mann says i've got a gun, pow pow pow. >> there was an online sale and an agreement to meet in public. but this one ended in murder. >> we knew we had to operate

6:04 pm
do so at a law enforcement office. most have a set up designated time to meet in the parking lot, a designated area. so just go ahead and do that in broad daylight and you should safe. we're live in lakeland. that's a great idea. you can sniff ow danger if they don't want to meet up at the p.d. the sheriff calls it a case of suicide by cop. last night a polk county drug task force confronted 32-year-old francis perry suspicion of selling meth. sheriff judd says detectives told him numerous times to roll down the window and shows his hand. he refused to comply and shot at officers through the window. officers fired back killing perry. he was released from prison in march. at a news conference the sheriff unraveled a scroll of perry's criminal history. >> there's the guy that chose to shoot it out with the detectives
6:05 pm
he's a bad man. but once again, we don't choose to shoot people. they choose for us to shoot them. compliance is a beautiful thing. >> the sheriff says perry shot at officers five times but did not hit them. the four officers shot at perry 28 times hitting him at least five times. the sheriff says detectives found two bags of meth in the car and the handgun he used that was stolen. deadly. his wife called 911 for medical attention but the father of two died. after deputies used a taser on him. what is the family saying about what happened? >> mark, they're in disbelief. they're not saying a lot. they asked a friend to speak for them. she told us don degra was a great guy.

6:07 pm
didn't survive. >> we were heartbroken. >> the sheriff says he won't comment until an autopsy is finished. friends didn't want to say whether they thought deputies acted appropriately. right now they're focused on degraw's family. >> we're going to love and support her and her children and be there for her when she needs us. >> using a taser is supposed to be nonlethal force but it can cause cardiac arrest in some people. so sad. thank very much. the polk county teacher to admitted to having sex with several students was in court. jennifer effecter pleaded guilty to several counts of child molestation. she was it sentenced -- 22 years and now wants it reduced. she claims the victims were willing participants. she faces charges in hillsborough county as well.

a phone charging in a a phone charging in a jeep ignites. look at that picture. a st. pete family is warning others about samsung's flagship phone. samsung recalled about 2 and a half until galaxy devices. >> the massive recall that could
6:12 pm
dollars. this is scary stuff. what do you do first of all if you have one of these brand-new galaxy phones? >> when you see a picture like that, okay, maybe i don't want it. this is one of the industry's largest recalls and the phone hit the market less than a month ago. there's a problem with the batteries but they can't tell which phones have them so they're recalling all of them worldwide. look what happened to the jeep. nathan dornacher had the phone flames. no one was hurt but dozens of cases like this prompted the recall. if you have one of these phones, you can exchange the device for a new note 7. if you don't want to wait, you can exchange it for a galaxy smartphone now and be refunded the difference in price and get $25 back from samsung as a rebate for your trouble. >> most of us get phones from the major carriers.
6:13 pm
if you say i don't want to wait, you can do that. if you don't want to wait for the exchange program, return it to at&t, sprint, verizon, t-mobile and let them get it back. the carriers all stopped selling the recalled model and they're letting you return it and any accessories and get your money back through the end of the month. verizon is waving restocking fees and sprint, at&t and t-mobile will let you swap out note 7 when the recall is over and it's available, depending on what phone you pick in the meantime. so ask about that. if you go with another samsung phone they'll likely let you switch it out. >> are the replacements available? >> they said last week it would be available this week and we're still waiting which is why you may want to get the interim phone. >> really bad timing for them but great timing if you're
6:14 pm
the market. >> and back-to-school time is a surge in electronics. and we have the holidays and of course the announcement from apple for the iphone. right? so not only does samsung have to replace the million million phos they're losing, they have to deal with potential losses as well. so when you think about this, as far as the iphone 7. the main complaint with this, no headphone jack. in the older models we had a jack. the iphone 7 will connect to blue tooth headphones and they're providing a adapter but i would lose this pretty much immediately. more pieces to lose. obviously no trouble compared to what we're talking about with the rival. >> more pieces to buy, too.
6:15 pm
by the way, when it comes to the jeep and the fire, the family is not looking for a lawsuit or a payout, they wanted to make clear samsung has been in touch with them and they're being very helpful and they're going -- >> they do need a car though. >> y he they do. >> that little problem. >> new phone, new car. >> we'll see. let's hand it off to paul. >> looking good. >> the last three days, paul, we've been on a roll. >> all this dry hermine for. what's left tv brought -- of it brought us a northeast wind. lower dew points. heading out the door wasn't bad, mid afternoon, back in the 90s. downtown tampa looking good. patchy clouds overhead. we're pretty much locked in. this pattern, into the first couple days of next week. not 92 today. how about 93. the morning low was as predicted
6:16 pm
49.83 for the year. that would be above average if it never rains another drop between now and december 31st. we did that last year. i remember saying the same thing. high pressure brings dry air. tropical storm moisture pushed well to the south and we have an east wind. the thing about an east wind this time of year, it will get humid and we'll get afternoon storms along a sea breeze. we'll seeom but more this weekend. i don't see anything in the weather map that screams any long term rain or any significant rain event. just an east wind. a little sea breeze late in the day. and that will produce a couple of showers. skytower, which has been wet in sarasota. watching showers move over the beautiful city for a time. also rain over bradenton, a couple showers near myakka city. everything moves east to west
6:17 pm
about it. with an east wind, it's going to be warmer on the west coasten that the east coast. it heats over land and on our coast, 90 in tampa, 91 sarasota, 9 st. pete. the tropics becoming more active. tomorrow -- actually the tenth on average is the peak of the season. one area of d another one developed today off the less are antilles. 10% chance next two days. 20% next five days on the first one. the second one has a better chance of development. this one when it gets going will likely stay across the open atlantic. i will add the european model run this afternoon did show the first one, what's left of it, spinning off the east coast next week. but with no development at all. as you know, we've seen all this
6:18 pm
environment does not favor any rapid intensification or development i should say anytime soon. 90 the dew point 71. winds are northeast at 3. around the country, high pressure dominates up and down the east coast. it's yet another major heat wave all the way from maine to the mid-atlantic states. you see that l by cape cod? can you believe it? that's still the remnants of hermine, which is spinning off it's really kind of spun itself out. there isn't much left but it's still on the map off nantucket and martha's vineyard today. ahead of this front, southwest winds really heating things up. nashville 92. raleigh 92. new york city 86. buffalo 78. columbus 86. we've been on the border between very dry air to the north, gainesville and tallahassee have very low humidity today.
6:19 pm
tropical moisture but fort myers and sarasota. eventually with the east wind, the moisture will come back. i think this weekend there will be afternoon storms and that's really about it. forecast for tonight, just about a half moon overhead. partly cloudy and mild and 76. sun and clouds tomorrow. thunderstorms developing late in the day. mostly south and 92. saturday, afternoon storms along the sea breeze. we stay in the low 90s. and i think 30, makes sense to me. we stay in the low 90s every day and nighttime lows in the mid 70s. >> this time of the year, there's not a lot of talent on the waver wire but the rays land a former all-star. sunday the bucs top pick gets his fir chance to fine and for vernon hargraves, his first
