tonight. we start with a news alert in tampa tonight, where there's been an officer-involved shooting. a tampa officer shot a man who police say stole a car. it happened near keys and north tampa street just a short time ago. police say the suspect who was shot is a white man in his late 20s or early 30s. he has been transported to a hospital, his condition is not known. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. our other big store owe hernando county mother is in the hospital just hours after learning that her 6-year-old daughter is dead. authorities say the girl's father killed her in north carolina friday night. earlier, evan spoke to the girl's grandmother, who says child protective services in north carolina and in florida both failed that 6-year-old. he has this fox 13 exclusive. >> lila was an extremely happy

manslaughter charges. the sheriff says troy whittaker told detectives last night that he put his kids in their car seats, dropped his 5-year-old off at school and then he thought he dropped his 23 month old son off at daycare after that. turned out he had not. instead, whittaker returned home that morning not noticing his son was still in his car seat just behind him. later in the day, whittaker says he went out to the grocery store. when he came home and unloading groceries, that's when he discovered lawson liveless and not breathing. he tried to do cpr but after eight hours in a very hot truck, it was too late. >> it's not an intentional act, i'm not saying it is, but you've got to be responsible for your kids. you can't let them in the car for eight hours and not have any responsibility for it. >> whittaker is also a hillsborough county firefighter.

charged with aggravated manslaughter. he was released on $50,000 bail this morning. we have learned the mother of baby chance walsh, who was killed by his parents in 2015, committed suicide at the sarasota county jail early this morning. you may remember baby chance was reported missing in september of 2015, and his body was found in october. barry and her husband joseph walsh told deputies several stories, including chance was killed in a car crash in south carolina, and that he was georgia. both were found to be untrue. joseph walsh, the father, is still awaiting trial. barry was expected to testify against him as part of her plea deal. a st. pete police officer is recovering from a serious hand injury after his gun fired during a traffic stop. police say officers tried to pull over a toyota corolla driving recklessly at 28th street near 11th avenue south. the suspect sped off and under

the car and used stop sticks to slow it down. the 16-year-old driver bailed out, leaving the car rolling. when an officer jumped in to try to stop the car, it hit a deputy's cruiser and the officer's gun went off. the bullet hit him in the hand. >> the officer is doing well. he had surgery and he did have a hand that was seriously injured but he is recuperating. >> investigators are still trying to figure out just funeral services were held in tampa today for the 22-year-old man killed in a deputy-involved shooting in palm river last month. the shooting happened while a swat team was serving a warrant at his home. the deputy who shot him said he feared for his life, but investigators say riggins was unarmed. demonstrators have gathered in tampa on multiple occasions since the shooting to protest his death.
