deputies rush to save a man's life. >> i didn't expect somebody right down the road for me to win the $18 million. >> but they did. what one lucky couple plans to spend all that money on. >> the announcer: from tampa bay's number one news station, this is the fox 13 6:00 news. >> good evening. welcome. i'm kelly ring. >> and i'm mark o'meara. a day of history in donald trump arriving in washington as the incoming commander in chief meeting at the white house with paulpresidt obama. the two men had never met before. they talked about the transition of power today and many other things during their first time meeting this morning. here's what the president-elect had to say afterwards. >> this was a meeting that was going to last for maybe 10 or 15 minutes. and we were going to get to know each other. we had never met each other. i have great respect, the

river walk. kimberly is there. how is her family holding up? >> reporter: mark, as you can imagine her family is hoart -- heartbroken. it's one of the worst events they'll ever go through in their whole entire lives. their family and friends are gathering. they have 20 purple balloons they'll be soon releasing. they say that was mariah's favorite color. today is all be remembering mariah. while they're hurt they're forgiving the shooter. it's a hard thing to do but mariah's mom says she wouldn't have it any other way. >> reporter: her family leans on faith to get them through the heartcakes. >> it's a bitter pill to swallow just think if people get saved or her or one life changed, angels are rejoicing. >> reporter: her 18-year-old daughter was shot and killed

she was in a car with a friend when deputies say she saw devone freeman. her friend and freeman didn't get along. they exchanged words and then freeman, who was in his car pulled out a gun and fired shots. deputies say she was an insent victim and freeman was aiming for her friend. >> i play that the man that done it finds salvation. i want to look him in the eye and tell him i love him and i forgive him. >> reporter: the loss hits this community hard. people of all ages are suffering. children and was studying to become an emt like her older brother. >> it meant a lot for me to her to follow had my food steps and to have such a heart. >> reporter: but her mom has done what so many others would find impossible. she's forgive ebb. while she wants justice she wants to watch her daughter's kindness live on in others. >> your life has a domino effect. you either do good things or you do bad things.

deputies on the tail of a suspected shop-lifter in port richey and then the man runs. it's a choice that nearly killed him. >> within minutes the same deputys that were chasing him are the same onessening bringing him back to his life. >> help me! >> you can hear the suspect gasping for help. >> the deputies realize he's drowning and a body camara records the rescue. >> we got to >> take my gun >> come on, come on, come on, go, go. >> that was deputy john read jumping into the canal. >> by the time i got to him he was dealt weight. >> and he another deputy strug toll get the man to shore. >> head up. get his head up! >> he was not responding. they brought him back to the shoveline where we multiple deputies administered cpr. >> get the cpr mask out.

>> he was not breathing. deputies shouted for chest compressions. >> does he have a heartbeat? >> after two minutes of cpr he started breathing again. >> it was a relief. it was something i think we all start this job to do, to save lives. >> hours later the canal is calm again. the man is heading to jail but is thankful he's alive and the deputies who saved him say this shows how their jobs can change in the of an eye. >> it's changing hats. we're trying to bring him into custody. but if his life in danger, we need to save him as well. >> the man has been arrested at least 10 other times and is facing serious charges in relation to this incident. deputies say he did thank them for saving his life, kelly >> all right. thank you. well, her name is elle and as bad as she looks, shez has

>> clouds way off in the distance. what i think the cool is the planets. you can see venus in the middle and saturn to the right showing up like a beacon in the western sky. what a great day. low humidity. lots of sunshine. we're talking about the upcoming winter season. one thing of note is that there is a developing weak la nina in the pacific ocean meaning cooler than average waters west of that ultimately changes or impacts the jet stream. with that means for us is usually a drier than average winter in florida. but we're looking at data, mike, ben, and i. it's not a strong indicator, either way. moderate and strong la ninas are usually much drier for us. as far as temperatures go, it can go either way. four out of 11 la ninas, temperatures were above average.

average or wee below. this is not a moderate or strong la nina. as far as winter goes t. looked overall to be milder and dryer than average. even in that pattern we can still get many cold fronts and certainly bouts of rain. for now we're dry and mild. not a good situation to our north. if you ever need friends or a lot of you vacation or have property up here in western north carolina and today. look at all the smoke. i mean, dozens of wildfires are ongoing right now. and that smoke is being pushed to the southwest. and everybody today in metro atlanta was complaining with the smell of smoke. a lot of people said it was bad with reduced visiblity. not good at all. this is some of the fires last night this >> is near lake lure. which i'm sure you've been out

distance. that smoke going up and blown down to the south. i just don't see really any end to that. there is a state of emergency up for western north carolina. the thing that's amazing is eastern north carolina and eastern south carolina has had too much rain from hurricane matthew. 16 days now in a row with temperature above average and now 26 days in a row without measurable rainfall at tia. today, another day above average, heading our way early next week. it will bring clouds and maybe some rain monday and tuesday. but the pattern is still pretty dry for us. for november, not unusual. this is typically our driest month of the year. great view from satellite today. not a cloud in the sky. dry air. n is pretty much locked in. tomorrow and saturday should be great. lots of sunshine. 6:00 of its, low 70s.

being led by women upset over trump's election. the group plans to hold a vigil in front of philadelphia city hall tonight. >> president-elect trump has reached out to one u.s. ally, the british prime minister's office. during the call she highlighted her wish to strengthen trade and investment with the u.s. and it hoping to strike a new tree trade deal after britain leaves the european union. but tru h take more of a protectionist attitude to the u.s. economy. the man accused of setting off bombs in new jersey and new york makes his first appearance today in court in manhattan. august -- akmed rahmi faces charges of places bombs in new york and new jersey.

and to pennsylvania tonight. a police officer there has been killed oar being shot by a suspect. the police department says the officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call this morning when a gunman fired at the them without warning. officer scott was killed. a veterans day memorial in the area bake a makeshift memorial for him. the other officer was injured and is now in stable condition. police say the shooter killed himself and a pregnant woman was also found so far they've not yet said how the woman died but she didshave a protective order against that gunman. thousands of officers made a final salute to a fallen merck network city police sergeant today. a funeral procession for sergeant paul wound through long island today. he was shot in the head in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in bronx last week. another officer was shot but survived. police ending up killing that shooter as well.

>> well, of course it's a well known fact that smokeing it not the healthiest of habits. but a center for disease control report shows how unhealthy it is. dr. joe has been looking into the new research for us. what did you find out in this study. >> kelly, tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the united states. since 1962 it's contributed to 20 million deaths. more recently we've seen a decline in deathsof that's thought because smoking rates are also down about 6 percent. still between 2009 and 2013 an average of 660,000 tobacco related cancers with diagnosed per year. 340,000 per year died of those cancers. now the cdc estimates about 36.5 million americans are still smoking. psychological stress, educational level, both of these things play a role. but two-thirds of smokers do

you can see a benefit if you do quit. >> what's the good news when you look at this research, though, that i hope there is some? >> there is. the rates in florida have hit an all time low. we're declining faster than other states in the country. now, part of that reason is because we have tobacco free florida. it's 10 years old. it's funded from money from the lawsuit settlements tw the tobacco companies. the state says they're making progress. adult smoking rights in 2006 were 21 in 2016 they've dropped to about 16 percent. and youth smoking rates have redeesed from almost 11 percent down to 3 percent. that's really wonderful news. tobacco free florida has helped about 15 #-,000 people quit and today they say that the healthcare cost savings to the state of florida are about $3.2 billion and they can help anybody quit. they have awe quit your way program. it's free. can you join a group. you can get a quit code. can you access ton the

about four to six miles in smoke all because of the fires in western north carolina. tonight, we're in the 50s to near 60. tomorrow, i expect it to be a day kind of like today in the upper 70s to near 80. future cast has a frontal boundary south of us and then high pressure building in. so seasonable and pleasant tonight. and then more sunshine coming up on by sunday, we may get clouds kind of coming in from the atlantic. we may turn partly cloudy during the day. as far as rain goes, i don't see much. maybe a couple of showers arriving on monday or tuesday. that's really about it. overall, it's a pretty good setup. certainly cooler than it was last year at this time. clear, nice tonight we're down to 60. 50s inland. sunshine tomorrow. beautiful veterans day. am mr. sunshine and a high up to 78. more of the same coming up on saturday. lots of sunshine in very
