florida will be selling driver's license personal identification information to marketers is not only unconscionable but it may well be that it is illegal under a federal law that was passed in 1994. >> that's what the state is doing. >> our investigation reveals the state over the last two years by providing the personal information contained in the driver's license records to companies that can then profit from them. some of the same companies have been banned from buying the data after reselling it to the marketing temperatures. and the state may be breaking the law after shing our investigation, the senator is taking action, he is calling for the department of justice to launch an investigation.

in the age of identity theft the fact they are making a profit selling the information on the market is unconscionable but this afternoon the director issued a statement e-mails from a saying the dmv does not sell the records which is what the department tried to tell me last summer. >> and how much did they make from celling. >> we don't sell data. law provides data allows data to be provided under certain exemptions and state law says if they are met, that the data can be given out. >> so last year the total is $73 million that the state brought in from these companies. >> a little over 73 million that goes to the highway safety operating trust fund.
