international mall. they're also gonna be at some of the major shopping areas during operation secret santa. fox 13 news. >> thank you, aaron. the driver of the school bus who crashed in tennessee is charged with vehicular homicide. 5 children were killed and at least a dozen more are in the hospital. lori, they believe that this bus driver was speeding, right? that's right. they were on a narrow road and police say the driver was swerving and going at a mile-an-hour speed limit. >> reporter: police say the bus veered off the road and hit a tree so hard it nearly split the bus in half. killing 3/4-graders, a cinld kindergartener and a first-grader. from wood moore elementary in chattanooga. feamsz here are still in shock like this mom. >> just tell your kids you love them. that's what you do. tell your mom, your sisters, tell your brothers, tell everybody because tomorrow is not a promise. >> reporter: now investigators

turn, when did he apply the brakes. new buses come equipped with black boxes that record everything the bus does. >> ours are hooked up to let you know if the bus does harsh braking. it lets us know when the amber lights are on, getting ready to make a stop. >> reporter: elliot gerard says the black box on this bus is part of a gps system that records speed and the vehicle's electronic brain can provide mechanical clues in a crash investigation. but in hillsboro loaded with kids, ran into the river, the onboard video cut off before the crash, and the bus had no black box to tell investigators whether the brakes or other mechanical systems failed with the driver of lenoir sam simmon at the wheel. >> we were only able to get a portion of the video and gps information in this case. a black box would provide us with a lot more information,

after 3:00 in the morning. the second at the jk food stores on bellaire road that was just before 11:00 a.m. and the third at the rs mini market on state road 590 just after 11:00 a.m. and they say the worrisome thing is he's getting bolder and the earlier hold-ups he implied that he had a weapon. but at the last robbery did he show a handgun. a brazen convenience store robbery in st. pete is caught on camera. the man launched over the counter, grabbed the cash register before running out of the store. there were other this happened yesterday afternoon just before 4:00 at a 7-eleven on dr. martin luther king junior street. a 65-year-old woman accused of robbing a st. pete bank of america was in court today, and a judge set bond for janice ellenwood at $100,000. ellenwood turned herself in yesterday saying she robbed the bank back on november 7th. investigators say she passed a note to the teller saying she had a bomb.

month is making a miraculous recovery, officer canal is moved to a regular move. last month the crash left him badly injured and killed the woman he piled over to help. penelas started a rehab program that he will likely be for the next year but friends say he is determined to get back on the job. >> he's been able to walk 14 feet, which is a huge accomplishment in such a short period of time, and his spirits are great. he's to get back to normal. >> glad to hear that. deputy penelas currently receiving workers' comp, and his wife who is also a polk sheriff's office deputy, is taking unpaid leave during his recovery. there is a go fund me set up to help them. $8,000 has been raised so far and a spaghetti fundraiser will be held tuesday at bartow high. president-elect trump has changed his tune on climate

too. let's bring in craig patrick to break this all down. this is a lot in one day, craig. >> yeah, we industrial more to come. let's start with trump having some tense moments when he met with national news anchors and from there he scold new york times as he ought does through twitter and said he would not meet with the times editorial board, but then he changed his mind on that. and in the course of the meeting that played out just a short time ago, he appeared to have changed his mind on a couple of other things. this came out, first off, appoint a special prosecutor to investigate hillary clinton. even said that if he became president she'd be in jail. but now as president-elect, trump is repeatedly saying he is not interested in investigating hillary clinton, because he's now focused on moving an agenda through his first 100 days. he also told the times that he has an open mind when it comes to climb mate change, that he sees some connection between human activity and a changing climate. on the campaign trail he has

trump previously said he would build a wall across the southern border but could be scaled back to a fence in places. bottomline we're seeing some changes in the president-elect's positions and prior gets well before he takes office. by the way, he did not mention repealing obamacare or building the wall. and as you two have messaged to the nation, he still wants to do those things for sure but appears to be focusing on what he thinks he can accomplish early next year right out of the gate. cynthia. >> speaking of which, you know, it was a youtube message, not have this big news conference and talk about the transition. so do you think that gives us a clear as to how he may govern as president? it absolutely does. and we're going to see much more of that. because trump obviously has had a contentious relationship with the national news media. that is something that actually served him pretty well on the campaign trail. and so far he is carrying that forward by not holding a press conference, for example, and expect that he will before long,

rain next week. another beautiful day after a chilly start. this morning was not as cold as it was yesterday morning. not a cloud in the sky, and what a run we are on right now. absolutely delightful outside with temperatures in the 70s, dewpoints low, and this, you know, i always call this -- this is san diego weather, minus the sea fog or the marine layer early in the morning. great stuff, and tonight not as cold as it was early today, and by back up to 80. should be great travel weather across the entire state. the southeast lose good. satellite loop, the only cloud i can find a few patchy clouds coming in off the atlantic and that really about it. the air mass remains ridiculously dry. now, eventually we'll start seeing some clouds kind of mixing in with the sunshine. but the prospects of rain between now and early next week are pretty much nil.

boys doing this. >> reporter: but helium and a swimming pool combined for an unexpected danger they never expected. >> i wish you the betts and all that's ahead of you. >> reporter: in orange city, dana jay, fox 13 news. >> wow, thank goodness that mother was >> the family says they know, they're lucky. more kids die in florida from drowning than anywhere else in the country. >> learn something new in that one. that's for sure. there's new information now about the man arrested for killing a san antonio police detective. otis mccain told police he was angry about a child custody battle and now he's charged with capital murder in the shooting of detective benjamin marconey and wants to apologize to marconey's family. marconey was sitting in his squad car writing a traffic ticket when he was ambushed. authorities say mccain targeted the officer because of his uniform. detective marconey was a 20-year veteran with that department and the 60th officer in the nation shot to death this year. >> some unsettling new developments as the fight against zika continues. a new report suggest babies born with zika can still develop microcephaly after the delivery. the cdc released their findings today after working with brazilian officials researchers say 11 of the babies developed microcephaly later on and they did have other brain abnormalities consistent with congenital zika virus. president obama commuted more than 1,000 prison sentences during his time in office. >> reporter: today the president shortened the sentences of 79 prisoners, most of them

tonight thanks to the marine watered aquarium found on october 10th missing a few bony plates off the top of his head, arrested last month floating off the intracoastal in st. pete. the turtle was released this morning in tarpin springs. >> we started him with a water test and immediately noticed he was floating frantically on the surface trying to dive which sometimes is likely dpiew to stress. over the next couple of weeks he ended up going to the bottom on his own, started eating squid release him. >> that turtle spent only six weeks in ray hab and workers tell us that's actually a pretty fast recovery. news is next...
