from tampa bay's number one news station, this is "good day tampa bay." it happened again. another tow truck driver is hit and killed on a local highway. what we know so far about this investigation. >> thine day nine days of mourning are under way. good sunday morning, everyone. welcome to "good day tampa bay." the time is 8:00 a.m. let's a check on the frarz. jim is in for lindsay. >> jim: good morning, alcides. the cold front has pushed to the south and cleared out the skies. a nice, cool, beautiful start to the day. in clearwater beach, 60 degrees and winds out of the northeast at 11 miles per hour. satellite view over the state, we start out with a few scattered clouds through the overnight hours and they move on to the east as that drier air, the ridge of high pressure

we have nice weather the next couple of days with that lower humidity as well. started out with the 40s across brooksville up into crystal river. the temperatures warm up quickly. brooksville is at 67 degrees and here in tampa 60 and down to the south in sar society da and lakeland has a 55. what a change over the past 24 hours with the drier air moving in. most of these temperatures runned 7, 8, in some cases 9 hours. a pretty significant cold front as far as drying things out. we have the drier air and warm it up quickly through the afternoon. still feels very comfortable with these daytime highs topping out in the upper 70s. have a cold front heading our way, and looks like that could bring rain later in the week. i talk about that in a little bit, ail side. >> thank you.

i-275. kellie cowan is liar at 275 and fowler avenue. what do we know? >> kellie: the details are scant from florida highway patrol, but they confirmed that a tow truck driver was killed in an accident overnight that occurred just off of fowler ear near the accident on 275. dh has beens just after this morning. several lanes were shut down overnight. everything has sin re-opened this morning. this fatal crash comes about a month after another crash that killed a different tow truck driver on i-75. that crash involved a driver who was allegedly drunk behind the wheel when he slammed into tow truck driver troy mcguire back in october. he was on the side of the road assisting law enforcement at the time, and this is just another

he move over law. that's what tow truck drivers always stress every time we cover an unfortunate incident. the move-over law, of course, requires drivers if it's safe to do so to move over an entire lane of traffic to give any kind of law enforcement officer, emergency responders and yes, even tow truck drivers the room to safely do their job on the side of the road. at this point fhp has not released any other details about we don't know whether or not it was a hit or run or alcohol was vovltd. at this point we don't know the identity of the tow truck driver killed last night either, alcides. >> alcides: hopefully we can get some questions answered this morning or later today. kellie cowan along 275. we thank you. also new this morning, tampa police are looking for the person who hit and killed a bicyclist and took off. it happened at himes and

the crosswalk. they're looking for a person in a dark-colored sedan. hillsborough avenue is shut down from himes to dell mabrey. it will be closed until the investigation is complete. if you have any information, contact tampa police. if you head out this sunday morning in clearwater, avoid parts of gulf boulevard. here's why. there's a sewage spill on the 1300 block of gulf boulevard in san key. over 100,000 gallons spilled after a main break for 12 hours going into two storm drains and going into the intercostal waterway. parts of gulf boulevard will remain closed for the next couple of days as they make repairs. nine days of mourning have begun in cuba. former dictator fidel castro died friday. alcohol sales are suspended and

rallies are planed at revolution square. a public memorial service will take place at revolution square in tuesday night. castro's ashing will be taken around the country leading up to his funeral on december 4th. while there were celebrations in mi miami, nor many cubans it was a more subdued celebration. families around tampa bay say castro's death is news they have been waiting for for a very long time. many acknowledged that the death of castro death of the dictatorship in cuba. >> when we all got the news, it was not only a time to celebrate family but a time to celebrate the end of an era. >> from one day to the next, everything that my parents had worked for and my family has worked, it was gone. >> alcides: there are a lot of questions even this morning following the death of fidel castro. brian yennes has more on what it

scene after someone called saying the dog bit a man. when the deputy got to the scene, the dog was off its leash and apparently still very agitated. when the deputy tried to back away, the dog started to bite her. investigators say the deputy was forced to shoot and kill it. >> i saw the dog come out and attack the pasco county sheriff's officer, a female. she was backing up to get away from the dog, and she fell down. >> alcides: neighbors say the dog belonged to a homeless woman. investigators have not released the name of the deputy or man hurt. it's unclear if the dog's owner will face any charges. friends family gather in st. petersburg to honor the oldest member of the original tuskegee airmen. willie rogers died last friday at the age of 101. his pastor says he was a loving man that cared deeply about his community and family. get this.

three weeks before he died. as part of the service yesterday, his family made the same walk rogers did for almost 50 years. >> he served his country with distinction as a tuskegee airman. he continued to be a vibrant part. a father and husband in this community. he was a resident historian. >> alcides: rogers was part of the 100th air engineer squad. he also served with t angels. he was wounded in action in 194. his family says rogers was a man of god and no doubt will be missed. all right. happening today the holiday season is upon us, and why should all the kids have the fun? today your four-legged friends get some pictures taken with stant at that claus. pet pictures with santa are taking place at westfield brandon, citrus mark and countryside malls tonight from 6:30 to 8:30.

in world west africa >> alcides: welcome back. iraqi troops continue their push to take back mosul from isis. iraq special forces came under attack on saturday. troops fired mortars and machine guns at isis forces. they were supported about by air strikes about the u.s. led coalition. 60 people died this week gented. the united nations says at least 73,000 iraqis fled that area since the government's campaign positive retake the city began last month. a quarter million people take to the streets in south or korea protesting the country's president. they met in downtown seoul and they want president park to quit ahead of an attempt of lawmakers to impeach her. that move could happen next week.

israeli police arrest several people in connection with wildfires burning just outside of the jerusalem. so far 23 people have been arrested accused of intentionally setting the fires. israeli prime minister called the fires a terrorist attack. hundreds of people returned to burned out homes and buildings on saturday. several other countries have been called to help contain the flames. israeli officials are saying many of the fires were set by politically-motivated people around costa rica clean up after tropical storm otto makes its way over land. otto was the strongest storm to hit that country. nine people were killed. the coast tariq can president declared a national state of mourns for three days. several towns were flooded and caked with mud. officials worry about the possible of more flooding as rev rains continue. back here at home, gorgeous

morning, jim. >> jim: a little cooler. cold front pushed through late yesterday. it brought down drier air. so we enjoy that through the afternoon, because these temperatures warm right back up as we go through the day. with that drier air in place, it feels so much more comfortable outside as we go through the afternoon with these daytime highs into the 70s. great-looking view from our tampa net cam. right now we're at 60 degrees and the dew point is at 50 and humidity is currently at currently our winds are out of the north-northeast at 8 miles per hour and bringing down the cool, delightful air over the area. it's 60 in tampa, clearwater has a 60, st. petersburg 62 degrees and down in sarasota enjoying 57 degrees this morning. started out in the 40s across our northern counties with brooksville in the 40s and crystal river, you bounced into the 50s. brooksville is at 57 degrees and

still have 30s across the panhandle. tallahassee at 37, panama city 39 degrees. the heart of the cold air stays to the north. we get that glancing blow of some of the really cold air to the north. it dries things out and made it a little more cool this morning. you can, in fact, see 11, 16 degrees colder across the northern part of the state. across central florida, mainly running between 7 to 8, 9 about 11 degrees cooler compared to this time yesterday, so you do see that dry air cool quickly and also warms quickly. it also feels so pleasant out there. we dropped the numbers from the 60s. in fact, we're into the mid-60s for the do you want yesterday. now we're into the 50s. some 30s across the north part of the state. that gives that nice, crisp feel to the air. view over the state clears out the skies.

the bulls celebration didn't last long. willie taggart's guys deserve a standing ovation after a record-setting 10-win season. they need a pem tell to stumble against eastern carolina last night. the best bet is liking the birmingham bowl on december 29th. they finished the season strong. usf matches two possessions later, to the end zone. a 43-yard touchdown run to tie the game. the bulls defense has been a weakness at times this year, but they put pressure on the knights. brown picked up the loose ball, school and score, 14-7 bulls. usf opens the game a little bit in the second quarter. marlin mack breaking loose for another big touchdown run. mack finishes with 155 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. what makes this bulls offense so

we're still following a developing story out of tampa. a tow truck dri a tow truck driver was killed on a busy bay area highway overnight on i-275. kellie cowan is live along i-275. fhp is releasing new information. what do you have? >> kellie: we find out new details about the crashing right now. we knew this crash occurred just after 1 left a tow truck driver dead. now we know the name of that tow truck driver as well as the driver of the car who hit him. fhp at this point tells us they believe the driver that ran into the tow truck was drunk at the time. here's the latest from what they've just released to us. now, they say that leandro perez was driving along 275 just south of fowler avenue this morning

from crockett's towing. that tow truck driver's hand is danny hand. he was parked with his caution lights activated on the outside shoulder standing to assist a disabled vehicle. on impact unfortunately he was killed at the scene, and they believe that as i mentioned perez was under the influence of alcohol. fhp says he was shortly after the accident arrested for manslaughter, and he's facing charges at this time and in jail at this time as well. so those are the latest details that we've learned so far. a tow truck driver killed early this morning on 275. he was doing everything properly, had his lights flashing according to florida highway patrol when that other vehicle slammed into him. that's another reminder of the move-over law and why it's so important to stay off the

pushed down to our south, really cleared out the skies and brought that lower humidity we're going to enjoy as we go through the next couple of days. look outside from the tampa net cam. gorgeous start to the morning with lots of blue skies. drier air is it in place. we're starting out with these temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. actually had some 40s earlier this morning up towards brooksville and crystal river. but in tampa right now we're at 60 degrees and brandon 59 and just a touch more mild in st. petersburg at 62 degrees. with dry air in place, we warm up quickly and very nice as we get into the afternoon. mainly sunny skies, very pleasant with these daytime highs topping out in the upper 70s. now, we have do have a cold front, which is going to work into the southeast. it looks like it will bring rain as we head towards the middle and second half of the week. i'm going to talk more about that coming up in a little bit,

here's a look at top stories making headlines this half hour. a peaceful end to a standoff between police and a man in tampa around 2:00 p.m. on saturday on a home on marham avenue. an arm would man barricaded himself inside the home. they were first calmed when the man's estranged girlfriend said he showed up at her house despite have been a restraining order against him. he was taken into custody a couple hours after the began. pasco deputies are looking for the public's help to identify a person who broke into a car port of one of their own. the broke into a car port of i a deputy's house early saturday morning and got away with items. if you know who that person is right there, contact the pasco county sheriff's office. nine days of mourning have begun in cuba. fidel castro passed away late friday night. alcohol sales have been

with thanksgiving over, holiday light displays are going up all around the country this weekend. one community in wisconsin, the light show isn't just entertaining but it's about helping people in need. the marshfield rotary club has been hosting a winter wonderland at the wildwood zoo since 2006. volunteers stirring up almost 1 million lights for the event. it collect food donations for needy families. fund-raising efforts benefit 29 different food pantries in wisconsin. >> it's so important for our girls, for our children to see that we do in and do something to enjoy as a family, but also that you think about the community and give back. >> alcides: last year the event raised nearly $40,000. this year organizers hope to collect enough donations to keep shelves stocked at pantries around the state until at least

it's 8:xx taking a look >> alcides: welcome back. looking at some of today's top crash in bartow. it happened on saturday morning just before 9:30 at ernest smith boulevard and highway 17 south. police say a passenger van crashed into a car. the two people who died were both passengers in the car. two others were hurt. so far no names have been released. local small businesses cashed in during small business saturday. in st. petersburg 150 artists

st. petersburg is at 62 dries. still seeing primarily 50s throughout polk county with lakeland currently at 55 degrees and as you work your way down to the south, places like sarasota starting out at 57 degrees this morning. with the cold front to the south and that drier air moved in. you can see the effect. we run from 3, 4, in some cases 9 to 10 degrees colder this morning compared to yesterday morning. that's the effect of that air pushing down the state. the dew points yesterday, these numbers got back up into the 60s, in some cases into the mid-60s. i was talking about this. it had a little humid feel. well, now we dropped the numbers back down into the 50s and it feels delightful. that nice, crisp feel to the air this morning that will carry into the afternoon as well. cold front is continuing to work its way to our south. we have cleared out the skies, a

ridge of high pressure building back in with plenty of dry air, but you don't have to go far to find the moisture and clouds just back to our west right through the middle of the country. so if you have the fronts that race across the country, and that will bring us the chance of some rain as we head towards the middle of the week. so the front will continue to work to the south. we still have a beautiful day for today that will carry into tomorrow as well with partly cloudy skies. cold front working its way into the southeast. it will initially have strong storms with the punch as it stalls out to the north. then you get this area of low pressure, which is going to ride along and eventually kick this front over to give us a chance of rain late wednesday and into thursday. for today, though, beautiful. lower humidity and mostly sunny and daytime highs of 78 degrees. for tonight we have clear skies and a cold night and overnight low of 63. for tomorrow good-looking day and scattered clouds and a bit warmer but the humidity is still under control with the daytime
