7:01 am
sun up in 2 1/2 minutes and we have 69 degrees the current temperature but it's the second number, that dew point in the mid 60s. because of that southeasterly wind, we started to raise that humidity up a bit. it's not going to be oppressive but definitely uncomfortable in a few spots where the dew point is in the mid 60s. temperatures now, i think this afternoon and tomorrow for that matter, our high temperatures should sneak back in the lower 80s. maybe, tiniest bit of a rain chance on thursday which i'll talk more about in a little bit. vanessa? >>vanessa: all right. the st. pete police are warning drivers to use caution at these intersections in the st. pete area. there's a power outage so that's causing some signals to be out here and you can see generally focused around the first avenue, second avenue area near 20th street north and also beach drive and fifth avenue northeast. treat that as a four-way stop

county area could be causing some concerns. u.s. 19 at curlew road. southbound lane is going to be blocked. just a single lane, though. >>laura: the search for thieves after a gunshot burglary in the middle of the night. >>russell: they took about everything. shayla reaves is long waters avenue any leads yet? >>reporter: yeah. good morning to you. right now we're waiting to get more information on exactly the number and type of weapons taken from off west waters avenue. i'm going to step aside here and show you the area that we're talking about. this is tampa arms company. guns and ammo. this is the business where deputies have spent hours taking pictures. we know crime scene technicians are here collecting evidence and we're trying to figure out what happened and who might be responsible for this damage. here is what we know. this all started sometime before 3:30 in the morning.
7:03 am
received a call from an alarm company. deputies responded and the scene on your screen is what our cameras rolled on this morning. you're seeing the impact, the damage left behind, the front store front glass is shattered. you can see empty rifle racks. a huge mess left behind and detectives are going to be checking out surveillance cameras for any leads in this case. now, we can tell you that this is a variety of firearms and accessories. it's unclear what specific brands or what specific types of firearms are missing from this location. these are details that detectives are going to be working to sort out as they get information from the owners, the managers of this business location. we can tell you it's located again in a strip mall. at last check we're told none of the other businesses here appear to be targeted and there are no
7:04 am
back side of the strip mall as well. in addition, some businesses do appear to have some security bars near the front entrance. a sergeant i spoke with earlier today said that tampa arms company did not appear to have any sort of security bars near that entryway where that shattered glass is located. a lot of questions still out there, still a lot of uncertainty as far as who might be responsible for this crime. we will c keep you posted and bring you new details as soon as the information becomes available. back to you. >>russell: we'll check with you later. thank you. >>laura: a developing story out of cot only -- colombia this morning. a plane crashed with 81 people on board. >>jennifer: this is tragic. some of those 81 passengers are members of a brazilian soccer team. there are survivors. this is video of one of them arriving at the hospital. five people are still alive.
7:05 am
crew member. everyone else was killed. 76 people dead. this is picture from the crash site. we're toll the plane had just left the airport when it ran into trouble. officials are trying to figure out if bad weather in the area had anything to do with a crash or if a mechanical failure is to blame. you can make out rescuers having to use flashlights to comb the wreckage. it looks like the top of the plane is missing. the metal torn back from the im and this is video from the soccer team's facebook page. it shows them preparing for the flight. they were flying the plane to a regional tournament final tomorrow. they had only been in the top division for a few years and had already played for a championship. the president of the team plans to issue a statement soon. >>laura: eery seeing that video, wondering how many of them are no longer with us. investigators say there's a good chance an attack at ohio state
7:06 am
18-year-old is accused of stabbing several people after driving his car over a curb outside one of the shootings on campus. ohio state police officer who was nearby checking on a gas leak fatally shot him. >> i thought it was an accident until the guy came out with a knife. i wasn't processing all of it. >> people really running and really screaming. i'm like, going on. then i heard three gunshots from about the same area and i was like, crap. what do i do? >>laura: investigators are trying to figure out the motive for the attack. they say that he was a somali refugee who went on facebook to express anger over the treatment of muslims around the world. he was a student at the university. we may find out if trevor dooley will get out of bond.
7:07 am
from valrico accused of fatally shooting david james during an argument on a basketball court. it happened in 2010. he was found guilty and given eight years in prison but an appeals court said that errors were made during the sentencing. his lawyers the him set free on bond until the new trial starts. the victim's family is fighting that. >>laura: lawyers for a former lakeland teacher will ask a judge to reduce her 22-year prison sentence. the two students that jennifer victor had sex with were participant even though they were underage and she has mental health issues and cannot get the appropriate help in treatment. she's done a year and a half behind bars. >>russell: and tampa police are looking for the person who vobed a valet at bern's steakhouse. the valet was walking into an alley when he was held up. it's the same area as two previous robberies. bern's put lights near the alley after it happened in may. >>laura: who will be donald trump's secretary of state?
7:08 am

>>dave: quite a difference in temperatures this morning. this is lovely. granteded, second to the last day of november and we got 60s, close to 70 in tampa this morning. it is 66 in st. petersburg. it's 65 in sarasota. it's still in the 70s, though, as you go across parts of i-10. pensacola at 74 degrees this morning. wow. that is warm. folks, we should be in the upper
7:12 am
year. and marathon, actually closer to 80 degrees this morning. dew points in the 60s and this can only mean one thing and that is, we have some type of a southerly component to our wind. in this case, yes. a southeast wind. over the next two or three days, that's going to keep our moisture levels up, oppressive? no. but well above normal so you can kind by friday and saturday, then we'll start to dry things back out just a little bit. warm and a bit humid. good news about this is the way things are set up this morning, we're finally getting some decent rain in georgia, south, north carolina. i mean, the places that absolutely desperately need it. we have to get these wildfires out and that smoke has just been sifting into and just hanging
7:13 am
it's miserable. and of course, the big fires in gatlinburg. if they don't get enough rain to put the fires out, at least it's helping firefighters and that will be the case over the next week or so as we're going to get multiple systems to move through the southeast and bring tons of rain into those areas. fantastic. for us, not so much. we may get a 30% rain chance come point, let's just get the fires out in the southeast and by thursday morning, this front will eventually come close enough, it may peter out a little bit. we may get a couple of quick showers now. when i say a couple of quick showers, we're talking about a 30% rain chance on thursday. see how thin that little line of rain is? so it's not going to be much. and then after that, we'll dry things out for a couple of days.
7:14 am
but the lion share of the rain will be in the place in the southeast they need it the most. that's good news. partly sunny, breezy, 82 for a high temperature today which is fantastic, right? that's about seven degrees above normal for this time of year. tonight warm and a bit muggy. you're likely to wake up in a very similar setup to this morning. mid to upper 60s. upper 60s along the coast. mid 60s inland and then breezy and humid tomorrow. your high temperature up around 83 de the coastal waters. as pretty as it is, we're looking at a moderate chop today with seas two to four feet. high tide at 3:09 this afternoon. another 30% rain chance look like it wants to work in early next week. very early next week. but after the next couple of days in the 80s, at least the high temperatures will get back in the 70s. >>vanessa: thank you. we have sky fox in tampa and they're overhead dale mabry.
7:15 am
bound. it is in the left lane here and closer to the intersection with north green and lake view. that's going to be the southernmost entrance of lake view and it's a four vehicle pileup here. we do have slower speeds reported from this point back to the northern most entrance of lake view so make sure you're planning a few extra minutes if you have to take dale mabry. we do have use of at least two lanes. now that we sglom zoom in back here, we're seeing blockage so we have use we're checking out north of that crash site. you can see some backups we're seeing there. so dale mabry at lake view. state road 52, new port richey area, we have a crash with some eastbound lane blocks, still yet to see any major delays but a safety concern so please use caution here and here is the latest crash reported out of the south hillsborough area. it's in gibsonton. u.s. 41 at beach avenue, lane blocks reported northbound and
7:16 am
to head that way. >>laura: thank you. tim tebow is no one hit wonder when it comes to baseball. >>russell: he plans to go to spring training for the new york mets. tebow didn't make much of a favorable impression in the arizona fall league, batting less than 200. he still had fun, though. >> i love it. i've had so much fun being on the diamond a fall league, i had such a blast and it's such a huge learning curve for me but i'm enjoying every single day. i'm enjoying the training and can't wait for spring training. it's so fun to take on a new challenge and i'm just having a blast doing it. >>russell: also he spoke out about colin kaeper nick. he heard boos on sunday. tebow thinks there are other
7:17 am
instead of booing them. zoom i think it's just unfortunate when you hurt someone's feelings like that. but i got the chance to play with him and he's a good guy. it was fun to see him make some big plays in that game. but i just think for me, my goal has always been able to bring faith, hope and love to people, especially in their darkest hour of need. what we need right now is bringing people together in this country more than new book. it's called "shaken." it's about discovering your true identity in the midst of rejection, broken dreams and heartbreak. he was a household name around hire because of his football career. he led the gators to two national championships while winning a heisman. >>laura: right now hundreds of people are out trying to be heard. >>russell: their fight for 15 coming up at 7:30.
7:18 am
beautiful spots in the country. not this morning. the latest on a wildfire causing mass evacuations. hey, charley. >>charley: "good day." that's a big deal for folks in that area. i hope they can get that taken care of. we're taking care of those in need this morning. it's giving tuesday. we're at the metropolitan ministries holiday tent. 905 north governor street. come down here and give us cash, check, some food, some toys and we'll make sure it goes to t look. mini donuts has come out so you can get a free mini donut and meet legends of broadcasting. that's jack harris and ted webb, ladies and gentlemen. so come down, meet legends of tampa bay broadcasting and make the holidays a little brighter for those in need. we can make it a "good day." walter allen is at another location. are you seeing folks in holiday?
7:19 am
people out here. of course, we're off u.s. 19 here in holiday. if you can't make it to downtown tampa, come and see us. about 65,000 people live at or below the poverty line here in pasco county. these shelves are barren.
7:20 am

7:22 am
((laura welcome back to good day tampa bay. the time is 7:--. another meeting >>laura: time right now is 7:22 and another meeting today as president sits down with former g.o.p. nominee mitt romney. >>russell: doug has more on that from washington. >> trump seem says to expect more announcements today but the big story resolves around secretary of state and we know that mitt romney is meeting with donald trump again today for what could either be a second job interview or perhaps a no thank you from the president elect.
7:23 am
again. after meeting with donald trump at his golf club more than a week ago, mitt romney will once again make his pitch, heading to new york for a private dinner with trump. but competition for secretary of state is stiff and romney not only faces a growing field of contenders but some within trump's inner circle, including his campaign manager, have expressed skepticism of romney and some see this as the beginning of the end for him. >> i think romney is going to get the shoes at the dinner tomo there's no way he's going to be secretary of state. it could be a dark horse not even on the list. there's still a potential for surprise. >> who is moving up? it may be david petraeus who met with trump yesterday. >> the meeting went well. i was with him for about an hour. he basically walked us around the world, showed a great grasp of a variety of the challenges that are out there and some of the opportunities as well. so very good conversation and
7:24 am
here. >> trump has selected georgia congressman tom price as secretary of health and human services. price is a physician and an outspoken critic of obamacare, a signal that trump may keep to his campaign pledge to repeal and replace president obama's signature achievement. as far as mitt romney, he's being treated differently from other job candidates for the trump administration. he's got that private dinner scheduled >>laura: delta airlines is now banning a man for his tirade about donald trump. >> donald trump, baby! we got some hillary clinton -- on here? come on, baby. >>laura: this video is on facebook this week and has more than two million views. video shows the man making derogatory comments about hillary clinton. his tirade had several
7:25 am
uncomfortable. the airline is sorry. they're refunding all passengers on the flight from atlanta to allen town, pennsylvania. >>russell: governor of tennessee declaring a state of emergency in parts of the state. thousands of people in gatlinburg and pigeon forge have been told to evacuate. a fire is burning way too close to dollywood and workers at an aquarium in gatlinburg say they need to get back there. more than 10,000 animals were left alone. they can without human intervention, dry weather fuelling the fire. >>laura: now texas. lone star state reports the first zika case. brownsville is on the gulf coast near the mexican border. she's not pregnant examine has not been out of the country. she said her condition is improving. health officials have been sent to that part of texas to see if the virus is spreading and if
7:26 am
>>russell: the 84-year-old 80 foot spruce arrived yesterday on the back of the flatbed. made 31 stops during the 4,000 mile trip from idaho. 6,000 ornaments will decorate it. tree lighting ceremony takes place on tuesday night. a week from today. >>dave: that's a lot of ornaments. great start to the day. i want to show you a couple of cameras this morning at the johns hopkins all children's hospital camera. south-southeast winds. that's why it's muggy this morning and temperatures there in the mid 60s. brookdale, bayshore camera, we've got temperatures in the mid 60s with the southeast wind at six. gorgeous, the tampa net cam, close to 60 degrees. going to be a warm day. temperatures for the next two days will run in the lower 80s and then with more cloud cover and the tiniest shower chance, that's right, 30% on thursday, highs will be around 79. >>vanessa: thanks.
7:27 am
mabry. the area is just south of van dyke. we have a crash we showed you before taking up two left lanes and this is closer to the intersection with north green and lake view. the southern entrance as i mentioned before of lake view. the delays are now back almost to van dyke so if you can easily avoid the area, please do so. otherwise, maybe give yourself an extra 10 minutes out the door to deal with all the slowdowns in the area. we'll keep an eye on this one. we're also roadways where things are going pretty smoothly right now. we don't have any crashes to report to you. this is a live look at hillsborough, 275, mlk, junior boulevard southbound delays not too bad. they're about normal this time o morning. bearss avenue to i-4 should only take 20 minutes. >>russell: an actress documents her first day of radiation for breast cancer. why she says she looks like she was ready to run. >>laura: and it's a day of disruption across the country and tampa is taking part.
7:28 am
good morning, ken. >>reporter: good morning. protestors are gone at this point but it's only the beginning for them today. they're going to two more places to say we want minimum wage of 15 bucks or else. ? think of your fellow ma ? lend him a helping hand. ? ? put a little love in your heart. ? ? take a good look around... ? ? ...and if you're lookin' down, ? ? put a little love in your heart. ? ?put a little love in your heart.? ? in your heart. ? with aches and pains with advil pm than with tylenol pm. advil pm combines the number one pain reliever with the number one sleep aid. gentle, non-habit forming advil pm. for a healing night's sleep. what makes thermacare different? two words: it heals. how? with heat. unlike creams and rubs that mask the pain, thermacare has patented heat cells that penetrate deep to increase circulation and accelerate healing. let's review: heat, plus relief, plus healing, equals thermacare. the proof that it heals is you. today, we talk differently.... work differently... relax differently. and all those differences take energy. at duke energy, we're doing things differently too. like new ways to generate power and even store it... ...for cleaner energy every day. so no matter how different things become, we're always here ....
7:30 am
7:31 am
>>laura: and welcome back. time is 7:31. we're continuing to follow a developing story out of tampa this morning. burglars broke into a gun store about 3:00 this morning. they stole guns and ammo. we still don't know how many guns or what kind. the thieves left a giant hole in the building. this was at the tampa arms company on west waters avenue. hillsborough deputies are collecting evidence from the scene and we'll update as soon as we're able to learn more.
7:32 am
mcdonalds in tampa. >>russell: workers demanding $15 an hour. ken is there right now. >> they demanded $15 an hour. they were here probably about 100 people or so. the only thing that they did that was a little bit disruptive was they went to the side of the building. they went on the property that was if you want to really cut hairs, it was illegal because it was trespassing. talked to the cops about that. they said we certainly would not make an arrest because of that particular thing. now they're goi projects. they're going to make two more stops before the day is done. did you accomplish what you wanted to accomplish? >> of course. every action we do is a success. we have plenty of strikers that are basically putting their jobs at risk every day but they come out today and put their job at risk and go on strike and federally protect ourselves. so yeah. a lot of victories. >> you guys are not asking for an increase in salary.
7:33 am
is it realistic? >> it's definitely realistic. look at california, look at new york. the cost of living is higher there but any person that's working in any industry deserves to make a living wage. no matter what you're doing. so $15 is where we think it's at, where we know it's at. >> mcdonalds said that we will help you get better education, we'll help you get a high school degree or college degree and therefore, you make m they're saying pick yourselves up by the bootstraps. >> unless you have a full ride scholarship, i don't think that's going to work. we have adjunct professors, people that are teaching the classrooms, they're on the front lines with us. they're saying they cannot survive off the wages they're getting paid. the people that are teaching classrooms aren't even getting a living wage. you can't take care of yourself without school.
7:34 am
entail? >> wait to see. i hope i see you there. >> i'm going to be doing other stuff. that's it. this is only the starting point for them today. two more places to go and the bigger issue, it is a national issue so things like this are taking place all over the country. probably not the last of them because the president elect donald trump said he would like to see the minimum wage go up. they're going to be putting pressure on the white house as well. back to you guys. >>russell: talk thank you. >>laura: another proven benefit to a good relationship between mothers and daughters. a new study shows teen girls who get along with moms are less likely to have sex early in life. teens were surveyed about their sex lives and relationships with both parents and found that girls who reported higher quality relationships with their mothers were 44% less likely to start having sex before turning 16. researchers think this could be because mothers are the primary
7:35 am
that they delay sex for other reasons like more supervision. >>russell: it's 7:35 and actress shannon dougherty has been very open about her battle with breast cancer and on monday, she began her first day of radiation and she is documenting that on instagram. posted this picture along with the caption, first day of radiation treatment. do we have the pic? we're working on. there it is. she posted this. first day of radiation treatment. i look like i'm about to make a run for it, which is accurate. she goes on, radiation is frightening to me, something about not being able to see the laser, see the treatment and having this machine moving around you just scares me. se also gives a shout out to all her doctors and nurses who she says have been great in her treatment. shannon first opened up about her battle against breast cancer in august of 2015. >>laura: wow. 7:35. there are over two million apps
7:36 am
apple's app store and that number continues to grow by the day. fox medical team is here now to talk about a couple of cool new apps related to the health world and good morning. >> there's a health app and within that health app, there's something there that will help other people in the event that you die suddenly. and that is organ donation, how important is organ donation? we don't want anyone to do that, we don't want anyone to die prematurely but it does happen. you can go on your phone, into that health app and it will ask you a few questions. one thing that was troubling to me, it does ask you for the last four of your social but that's not going to apple. it's going straight to the organ donation group. they're saying just because you certify that you want to be an organ donor on your driver's license, which i done, of course, it doesn't mean if you're somewhere else around the country that they will have that
7:37 am
it's trying to register you as that organ donor. >>laura: is it like a statewide data base? does it report to the department of health in any way? >> no. it's a national organ group. >>laura: now you're talking about this app that could help blind people. >> it's so simple that you think, why didn't someone think of it sooner? it's called be what you do is you sign up for this particular app and individuals can help people that are blind. using the face time or whatever video capability your android may have, you can look at something for that person. say it's a label, a food label and they just can't read it. they can just say, hey, what does this label say? then you can answer that question. is my turkey cooked? what is the street sign say sng
7:38 am
there are about somewhere around 400,000 sighted individuals that are signed up to help about 30,000 blind individuals. it's a ratio of 12-1. they say, think about it, too. with people that can have limited vision, sometimes their sleep patterns are off. that gives the worldwide capabilities for you to help me that might be in need of some sort of assistance. >>laura: wow. that's like an uber in a way for sight. that's interesting. >> it is. >>laura: let's talk about -- i'm not sure what the health connection is here but selfies are stick popular. there's an app for that, too, right? >> people die taking selfies. so there was a researcher that got together and they looked at the ways that people died taking
7:39 am
falling from heights, trying to take the picture but with groups, there were issues with falling out of boats and so there were numerous ways that people died taking selfies. another very sad is death by train. what this app is hoping to do -- >>laura: all while taking selfies. >> exactly. what the app wants to do is to kind of figure out where you if you're in a dangerous area and warn you that perhaps this is not a good idea taking this particular area. some sad stories that you read were individuals going out in row boats, all leaning to one side, seven people drowned in one particular episode. there are people that died saving somebody, trying to save somebody who fell in a waterway while taking a selfie so, you know, really have to stop and
7:40 am
taking that selfie. you're looking at yourself, trying to figure out, am i framed right? you may not be paying attention to that cliff you're on. >>laura: i suppose a useful app. it's come to that. thank you, dr. jo. >> thanks, laura. >>russell: it's 7:40 right now. bosses across country are going to be happy today because fewer of us will be shopping online during business hours. cyber monday is over. it was histic sales just yesterday. another 5.3 billion during the four-day weekend. 122 million people bought something online from thursday through yesterday. for amazon, that equals 629 items to ship every second. i did pretty good this year. i toned it back. >>laura: it's a -- it's early.
7:41 am
in a recent survey, 93% of americans knew about black friday but just 18% are familiar with something called giving tuesday. >>laura: it's fairly new. less than five years old. walter allen is at the metropolitan ministries right now, the tent to pasco county to tell us about what it is. try to let the people know. good morning, walter. >>walter: good morning to you. yeah. we hear about metropolitan ministries in tampa all the time but we very their campus here in pasco county. and it shows we need to get the word out, right? these are the shelves. these are supposed to be for the toys for the youngsters coming up for this christmas season. we need toys, folks. especially for infants and teenagers. we need more toys. nancy is coming in this morning with metropolitan ministries of pasco county. let's talk about the people that you help out.
7:42 am
>> we have about 600 families that come to our outreach and prevention services throughout the year. we anticipate helping about 3,000 families from the pasco county this holiday season. >>walter: is that number jumping out to you as more or less? >> a little increase. i think the word is getting out we're here. we need the community to get the product on the shelves so we can help the families and give them some hope for the holidays. >>walter: ablu morning. they need food but toys especially. >> we're one of the few agencies that assist with children from infant up through teenage years and we have a gap. we need to fill that infant and teenage age as well. >>walter: people that sign up, you give them an opportunity to shop. it's not like you're stuck with this toy for your teenager.
7:43 am
this isn't about metropolitan ministries giving toys. this is about parents, grandparents, foster parents being able to come in and they have the dignity of choice and to be able to present and prepare christmas for their families.p>>walter: teenage boys can be difficult. you're talking about sports, cologne. >> the cologne sets are great. love the sports gear, balls, equipment, that sort of thing. for young ladies, makeu craft kits. girls are a little easier than boys are. >>walter: we're going to collect donations starting at 9:00 this morning right off u.s. highway 19 here in pasco county. if you're not able to make it out, metro min.org. >> correct. giving tuesday. let's get the match from the donor. >>walter: and fill up the shelves. back to you guys. >>laura: nice.
7:44 am
over on governor street in downtown tampa. and also a place called taking it to the streets ministries. that's at 7320, 47th street north in pinellas park. there are three locations where you can donate today. >>laura: and you don't think about the teen gifts. they need the most. they're harder to get but i think that's what i'm going to do this year. little perfume sets, makeup. >>russell: i'll do it with you. >>laura: okay not live up to its reputation. florida ranks 44th overall in the country according to a survey from wallet hub. 41st for volunteering. 44th for giving. five best states, utah, minnesota, north dakota, maryland and oklahoma. while the five worst, hawaii, nevada, texas, california and arizona. >>laura: as a nation the news is a little better.
7:45 am
countries of giving. 70% of giving gave to individuals. 63 million people were volunteers last year serving 52 hours each for the year. that's good news. staying strong. over to you, dave. >>dave: and at 7:45, it's stunning outside. yes. it's warm and it's a bit on the muggy side, too. 69 degrees with a southeast wind at 10 miles per hour. back to the 80s today. changes, though,at we'll discuss those here on
7:46 am
7:47 am
7:48 am

chance we have for this work week is on thursday morning and that rain chance is only around 30%. kind of leaves us like yesterday. partly sunny, breezy, we'll bring it up to 82 degrees for a high this afternoon. i like that. even though technically it's seven degrees above normal, warm and a bit muggy tonight. low temperature near 69 degrees and then partly cloudy, breezy and humid tomorrow with high temperature again in the lower 80s. now, on thursday a front comes into the state, comes through. maybe close enough, maybe enough lift, we get a 30% rain chance and then dry it out for friday and saturday. highs in the mid to upper 70s. >>vanessa: and folks will still want to continue to plan extra time or avoid southbound dale mabry approaching north green and the intersection with lake view drive. the south one. we're still dealing with the multi vehicle crash blocking at least one lane and it is slow all the way back to van dyke. so we'll keep an eye on this but we're not in the clear quite yet
