steve? >> reporter: well, first of all, great to see the commissioner always be classy is the ability to do that and also great to see the human side of seth williams who sometimes can hold back his anger and that's a good thing too. because he felt the same way most of the city felt. everybody that heard what happened just before lunchtime on friday on this corner, a major intersection, germantown and allegheny for most will be known as the place of balloons, bears and candles will eventually be a permanent place here. this lot is city owned and they want to put a permanent memorial here to honor the three kids. their mom continues to fight for life to try to get better. now in a medically induced coma.

on the other end of the story, the two who caused all this pain beginning long lives locked up for good likely, arraigned overnight. no surprise, no bail, formally charged and moved to prison. the lawyer for the younger one, 19 years old, never in trouble before, who somehow started just one week before hanging out with the older one, 24 in deep trouble, serious trouble for serious crimes since 14 on 60 previous charges. >> he has never been arrested before, never been in trouble, never been in jail and he's supposed to be going into the marines in a couple of months and obviously that's not going to happen. >> is this a case of just hanging out with the wrong guy? >> from what i know, that's what it sounds like. the decision he made to get into that car is one he will likely regret for the rest of his life. but he did get in the car. now, again at this point, we're not really thinking about defenses. we're thinking about the people
7:04 am
that were hurt and hoping that nobody else dies. >> we're grateful for the outreach they've gotten. it's a senseless killing that should never have happened. >> while 24-year-old cornelius crawford, paroled early from a 2007 sentence of up to 15 years from a violent robbery spree despite both a criminal history before and that the state corrections and parole board found that he is a high risk of violent reoffending but later still put him in a halfway house and later saying that he showed positive institutional behavior and motivation for success that despite in prison he was still getting in trouble. eight cases of prison misconduct. but still the parole board seemed in this case to predict something bad from a bad guy clearly made a bad decision

unleashing him back here. >> did you say 60 charges in his life? >> reporter: that's before all this stuff going back to age 14. >> wow. >> yeah. >> ten years, 60 charges. all right steve. developing right now, as a matter of fact, a 58-year-old man is recovering from a stabbing outside of a home in the overbrook section of the city. it appears to be the result of a domestic dispute. it happened on the 6100 block of west columbia avenue around 12:30 this morning. when police arrived they took a man away in handcuffs. a woman was also led away from the scene. and there's still no word on what the motive was in a deadly chain of events yesterday afternoon. >> philadelphia police say the whole thing started as a hit and run but they ended up with a driver dead in the delaware river.
7:06 am
here's the video of the car being pulled out of the rin. a man in his 30s left the scene of an accident. about a mile away witnesses say they watched as that black volkswagen sped down the ramp towards penn's landing. they say the driver hit the wall before his car flipped over and landed in water. >> what was going through his mind? why would he do that? from market street down the ramp and into the gate and hit the wall and went right in the water. it's crazy. >> two men who lived nearby actually jumped into the river to try and rescue this guy, but unfortunately it was too late. the car was under the water for about 20 minutes. the man died at jefferson university hospital. >> a friend of mine was outside the tv station when this happened. the car went screeching by and had some debris on the front of the car. heads down market street over to pen's landing. it was unreal. >> police say an overprotective

dad is to blame for an attack at an upper darby wawa. >> fox 29's jen joyce is live. we still don't know who this dad and his daughter are, is that true? >> reporter: that's true. police need your help in finding them. a dad walked into a wawa here in upper darby. he thinks a grown man is checking out his teenaged daughter. the men exchange words and the dad uses his fist to finish the problem. the man in the red shirt is who police are looking for and the girl is believed to be his daughter. according to upper darby police, the man became enraged when he claimed to see a fellow customer at the sandwich counter checking out his daughter. the two men exchanged words and dad pulled out his fists and sucker punched the customer knocking him to the ground. the victim, a 47-year-old man is hospitalized with a possible
7:08 am
concussion. >> the guy ordering the sandwich denied looking at the guy's daughter. and one thing led to another and the guy in the red shirt, the assaulter, sucker punched him and knocked him into a tray of cakes and down into the ground where he hit his head. >> it's always okay to say what are looking at or stop looking at me like that, but never is it okay to hit anybody. especially if you're trying to set a good example for your children. >> so again police are looking for information on the man in the red shirt along with his daughter and they want to bring them in to the police station to question them. dad could potentially face some serious charges including salt and terroristic threats. >> the search is on this morning for a driver in a hit an run it happened outside a wawa in gloucester township, new jersey. police say that chefe with the tinted windows pulled into a spot -- yeah. this is last friday.

chemical in a recycling plant. >> this is on the 700 block of smith lane yesterday morning at the green star recycling plant. we don't know the condition or what specifically chemical they were exposed to, but we can tell you firefighters decontaminated dozens of people at the scene as a precaution they say. >> okay. let's add another state. north carolina's attorney general says his office will no longer defend the state's ban on same sex marriage. >> he says that an appeals court ruling makes it very likely that the state ban will be overturned. a constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman was only passed in 2012 in north carolina. >> yeah, yeah. >> and also a major victory in virginia, a court ruling the state's ban on gay marriage is ablthly unconstitutional. this is the first decision of its kind in the south. however, it does not give the green light for marriages. marriage licenses themselves are

not going to be issued for another 21 days and that kind of depends on the appeals progress. a pregnant woman claims that a police officer put her in a choke hold right outside of her brooklyn home. the whole thing apparently started over a barbecue. >> this is the second recent incident involving new york city officers using choke holds on suspects. they're not supposed to do that. about two weeks ago new york city police were caught on camera right here putting eric garner in a choke hold while trying to arrest him for selling cigarettes. he later died. the incidents are sparking outrage in that ze of new york. the mayor, back from vacation, is addressing the growing issue. the most recent incident a woman seven months pregnant arrested for disorderly conduct. police say she refused to stop barbecuing in front of her home which is illegal in brooklyn. her husband under arrest for obstructing government business as well.

parked offshore. and by the end of the week, the weekend, it could be moving back. so enjoy high pressure while it's here and the northwesterly breezes which took away from the humidity and for most of us that is a good thing. temperatures are in the 50s, out to our north and west it's 52 degrees in pittsburgh. that cool air mass affecting a lot of people on what normally would be a hot and muggy july morning. but not here. 64 degrees in philadelphia. and it's 64 down in wildwood. 54 in mount pocono, 57 degrees in lack caster. it's a comfortable morning. dew points are in the 50s. anything below 60 is a comfortable dew point. we're right around the pleasant range to invigorating. we like it. so it was a decent monday, we didn't get that much rain. 84 degrees was the high. 87 is the average high and we'll be well below that today i 83 tomorrow. 84 on thursday. then friday is when we think we

might start to see some precipitation from that frontal system we just showed you. and things look a little uncertain for the weekend, whether or not that frontal system comes by and gives us a chance of rain. it may be a less than perfect weekend, but we still have time, kacie. it's only tuesday. >> i just totally photo bombed your seven-day forecast. i guess i video bombed or tv bombed. but i just walked into your forecast. it was so great i couldn't resist. it's not too, too bad this morning. 76 jammed, 95 south only jammed once you get past the betsy ross bridge. burlington, sail lem road, an accident vehicle into a pole, crews on the scene trying to get that out of the way. accident number two, guys? >> thank you. talk some sports here, what do you say? there are now only two days left until the major league baseball

trade deadline. fox sports is reporting that the phillies have made cole hamills available. so the chances he moves at the deadline still considered remote. but scouts were on hand last night to see a.j. burnet start for the phillies. if they were thinking about trading for a.j., they may change their mind after last night. he gave up seven runs in the phillies 7-1 loss to the mets. it was brutal last night. we'll keep you updated to that. cole may be going to the cardinals or the dodgers. the eagles held an open practice at the lake. about 15,000 fans came out to get their first glimpse of the eagles. they play their first preseason game on august 8th in chicago against the bears. that's a friday. a judge clears the way for

team that they bought 30 years ago. and a catholic school student wins a scholarship, only he never got the money. what's he supposed to do about it now? by the way, he's not alone. what we found out when we tried to get results for this family. and a local senator just got back from colorado where he visited a marijuana testing facility. what he has to say about it. and should we legalize it here in pennsylvania? that's his goal.

7:24 am
parents of 30 catholic school students in philadelphia are left with unpaid tuition bills after the scholarship money they were promised never showed up. and we're days away, weeks away from school starting. what's the deal? put your mike on. >> it is on. >> it's not on. let me tell you about this. it's news every parent would like to hear. your son or daughter is getting a scholarship, right? so what do you do when that scholarship money never shows up? it goes missing. many families are now praying for a miracle to get into their catholic schools. as an eighth grader, jared was a recipient of a $1,000 a year scholarship from the morgan smokey brown foundation. they shorted their bill every month thinking the scholarship was picking up the tab, well it wasn't. at the end of the year they were
7:25 am
a,000 short on their bill. they were told they would have money by late may, early june. it's now late july, we're headed into august, still nothing. >> it's a,000. you know, so the tuition goes from 6150 to 5150. >> i was very proud that he got it. >> well, what makes the situation even worse in the spring, the family was told they had to attend a mandatory gala on behalf of the scholarship recipients. it cost $300 a couple. so they paid that and went. the founder of the charity tells us here at fox that an ongoing irs audit has left the foundation short on cash. but the situation will be resolved within four weeks. of course, we will stay on that story. as you know, a community is trying to come together to help police nab two men wanted for that deadly car jacking that

left three kids dead. district attorney seth williams and police commissioner charles ramsey are here next. you know the two have now been charged with these crimes. and jen fred is over by the art museum doing something called the navy seals workout. this looks rough, jen. >> reporter: it's hard enough for most people to make it up the rocky steps, how about if someone tells you to carry

look at that shot there. a little bouncy, help? >> it means it's a nice sea breeze. atlantic city, folks already getting their spots on the beach today. it's looking good out there. let's go through a couple of tweets that we've seen this morning. what a beautiful morning it is today. feels like fall. i think a lot of people are thinking that. can we expect more or is a change coming? you know a change is always going to be coming but not for a few days. it feels like fall, the summer version of the polar vortex. thank you for that tweet.
7:30 am
yeah we do have some canadian wind with us today. bus stop buddy is wearing the eagles jersey this morning because temperatures are in the 50s and 60s, clear and cooler this morning. really comfortable out there, a 10 out of 10 in your weather by the numbers. sunny and dry and cool for july. so right now 64 degrees. just a light breeze out there. 80 degrees is our high temperature later on today. it will be sunny skies. an ideal forecast for july 29th, when normally in these parts we're seeing a lot of heat and a lot of humidity. so that's a look at your weather. kacie will be by to take a look at traffic. >> thank you very much, sue. burlington salem road, a vehicle into a pole. taking a look at all of your majors. the only places that aren't that slow, 476, northeast extension of the new jersey turnpike.
7:31 am
water main break in north brunswick. you can follow police direction at the scene. mike? >> thank you. let's get into this. as you know by now, two men are lookd up and charged this morning in connection with this car jacking that killed three children last friday. 22-year-old -- i think maybe 24-year-old cornelius crawford on the left and 19-year-old jonath jonathan rosa on the right. police say the suspects are responsible for robbery, sexual assault, murder. they now have a slew of heavy charges against them. this one hurts, doesn't it? >> it does. >> when you have one son. >> i have one son, he's a philadelphia police officer. >> that's right. and you have three daughters. i know your three daughters. >> is that why it hurts so much?
7:32 am
because we can so relate to this? >> i think that's part of it. i have three daughters i can't imagine losing them. we've almost become callous to random violence. but when people see three innocent children who were selling fruit for their church murdered and then the cowards escape and later learn that they had sexually assaulted the woman they had car jacked. >> that's what was going on? they car jacked this woman's car and they're sexually assaulting her. >> they had switched positions a couple of times during the course of this. so it's a very heinous crime. no question about that. and what adds to it is just the fact that now you've got three children that are dead as a result and a mother that's just clinging life. >> so if she makes it, she doesn't know that she lost three kids. >> she has been in a coma since this occurred. so she does not yet know. >> you would think she wouldn't
7:33 am
want to wake up. >> she does have other children. but that's not going to take away from the impact that this is going to have. this is something that was totally unexpected, obviously. they're doing what they always did, set up the fruit stand to raise money for a church. they were regulars in the community. we have never seen the amount of cooperation from a community that we saw in this particular case. >> that's interesting. because a lot of times, a lot of folks don't want to talk to the police. they really helped out. what did they help you do? >> a lot of credit goes to the police department, commissioner ramsey, captain clark, a lot of the detectives didn't even sleep. because of how heinous the crime was, the tragedy, loss of life. but the public called, the police department called the tips line, business shop owners had cameras, people had videotape, people that went to the crime scene, people trying to give as much information as possible. we have a lot of people who run the other way. and people who don't want to help aat all.
7:34 am
so we're very thankful for at police department and i'm very thankful to the outpouring of help to the public. >> we had a couple of down the shore who heard about it and came back. we don't know if it captured anything but we want to give you the footage. it just shows you how people reacted in response to this. >> i don't want to give any publicity to these two creeps. we should know who they are. the 19-year-old met the older one just a week before the incident. >> that's what we're told. that they met about a week prior. the 19-year-old had no priors. of course the older crawford had an extensive record. >> 60? >> been out there for a while. >> 60 charges. >> well when you look at his juvenile record and his adult record. but he's done time in the penitentiary. was out on parole. and he is back out again.
7:35 am
>> it's my understanding he was gip a five to ten year sentence and he served the minimum. he was paroled and he was sent to a halfway house. i've been in touch with the state secretary of corrections to talk to him about this and to look at the policies and protocols for gunpoint robbers who are released to see what the data is and see if any changes need to be made. >> they ever get out of prison you think? >> oh, no. >> hopefully this goes through. i hope the family doesn't have to go through a trial. but if they don't, we have a lot of evidence. we have statements, we have everything we need. the da has got good people on this case. >> how about the mother of the 19-year-old? doesn't she convince him to turn himself in? >> well, after he told her what took place. she did say that he should turn himself in. and he did in fact turn himself in. so she did the right thing. >> the defendant is facing three
7:36 am
counts of felony murder. that's murder in the second degree and it's punishable by mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. >> how do you go off the rails so far by 19 to even come up with this scheme to do this. it's just unbelievable. >> yeah. i've learned a long time ago a lot of this stuff you don't understand and you may not necessarily want to understand it. you don't want to think like some people think. >> here is probably some good advice on the front page of the daily news. hug your kids. you never know. thank you both. >> thank you. on a lighter note indeed, a few weeks ago we told you about facebook doing some experiments with our minds, with our news feeds, manipulating us. well now the dating website ok cupid, they admit to doing the same thing. connecting people who had nothing in common. what was the point? i'll explain. and instead of handshaking somebody today like i just did with the commissioner, you

all of my love. it's tainted love. you know the dating website that's called okcupid.com? they have come clean yesterday. they say they've been missing around with our heads and messing around with our love lives. kacie, what were they doing? like facebook? >> first of all, this is a free dating website. the only thing they charge you for is to filter your results based on body type. right off the bat you know there's an issue. the site's cofounder admitting to manipulating profiles. on the company's website he wrote, but guess what everybody? if you use the internet, you're subject to hundreds of experiments at any given time on every site. that's how websites work.
7:41 am
the dating website reportedly removed text from profiles, even told some users that they were exceptionally good for each other. >> what's the point? >> the company says they wanted to see what would happen. see if people would be like i o douls. >> like you are's pretending to drink beer but they're not. >> the reaction they're getting is back lash. i don't think i was ever on ok stupid. >> ok cupid. >> got to be careful because there are experiments going on all the time on the internet. what an excuse. i've got something for you up here. jeans made from that spanx material. we've all heard of jeans that promise to make you look good.

sometimes, caring for your neighbors means going the extra mile. when our patient, susan, mentioned her dad couldn't make it in to pearle vision to get his eyes checked... we went to him. and we realized, if he had trouble getting new glasses... he probably wasn't the only one. to us, eye care is about living dr. pearles legacy. building a trusting relationship with the person behind the eyes. this is genuine eye care, right in your neighborhood. this is pearle vision.
7:45 am
and so is the weather. it's amazing just the way it are. is. there's a look at the mountains. bush dpts kill -- bushkill falls. and some of us go to the shore. temperatures are in the mid 70s right there on the beach. a northwesterly breeze at 10 miles an hour. low rip current risk but make sure you swim near the lifeguard. 8 is the uv index today. the cold front that came through yesterday well offshore giving us plenty of room for sunshine and no rain to show you.
7:46 am
just a whole lot of nothing with rain. temperature trend was starting to get up there on sunday when it was very oppressive, hot and humid and 91 degrees. yesterday was our transitional day with a cold front coming through so we got to 84. we're starting off in the 50s in so many places. with all that sunshine, we'll probably make it close to 80 degrees. it's those breezes which are so nice and dry. the pollen count going back up again. medium to medium high levels again. closer to high levels on thursday. keep that in mind too if you suffer from seasonal allergies. 87 is the average high. 83 tomorrow and 84 on thursday. then it gets a little tricky with our forecast deciding what
7:47 am
our front is going to do. the one that's offshore right now. we'll put in the possibility for saturday and sunday. maybe even a thunderstorm and we'll see what happens. >> we have a lot of accidents to get to. we do have a water main break in north brunswick. river avenue both directions you're going to find that between davidson and mill road and old georges road. if you're heading out in newark, baltimore turnpike shut down there. if you're heading out in gloucester city. you do have debris there on the westbound side of the walt whitman bridge. >> you know the lovely kerry barrett here, her husband looks like one of these guys. >> he's pretty fit. >> he's really fit. he has a hard body like this. >> you've been checking him out? >> yeah.

so the navy seals, you know how hard they work. now there's a training program where you can kind of pretend to be a navy seal and get in the best shape of your life. jen is trying to do this today. >> physical and mental, jen. >> reporter: exactly. this guy is a veteran of the navy seals. good morning. >> good morning it really cannot compare to what the men and women are out there doing every day. >> this is an at your pace fitness class totally different. but it's amazing what you can do if you work as a team. what are we going to do here? >> lift the kayaks up, race to the top of the stairs, carry the kayak back down. >> you're telling me about it but make them do it. >> all right. kayaks above your head! who's going to win? >> we are. >> go!
7:49 am
>> reporter: so this is really hard. we've seen people all morning long just trying to make it up the steps. be they are carying a kayak. just two people. >> we're trying to get them to work as a team. everyone pound you lift is one less than your buddy has to lift. >> that young lady in the front of that team has come a great, great distance from when you first started training her. >> i joke that she couldn't walk when i met her. she went from 0 to 21 pull ups. she does marathons, tough mudders. >> you know that because you live with her. >> i do. that's my wife tracy. >> you want to instill that. why is that? >> i want them -- we all need instructors to help us reach our full potential. you learn a lot about yourself and people. if you can do this, maybe other

things in your life that seem difficult aren't so hard. >> reporter: what you want them to do is evolve over time. you like the idea that some people start, maybe not ready to do this and they can come together. you told me about one woman who lost more than 100 pounds. >> yes we had a woman who was 320 pounds. she lost 160 pounds in our class and she broke down and said she did it for her children. she couldn't run a lap around a track when we met her and she just ran a half marathon. >> you're relatively new to the philadelphia area, you want to see what they're made of. >> it's an at your pace program. we have a two week basic fitness class you have to do first. the it's monday through friday for two weeks. you get a t-shirt and if you join it you get a membership.
7:51 am
it's $100 a month. you come as much as you want. >> they're going to do it as a team this time? >> that's right. not until they get down. one more race with the kayak and they're going to come back. >> i enjoy the fact there's still another race to go and we're not done. >> how long is the class? >> the class lasts about an hour. so these people by the way have already done a full hour. >> a one-hour workout. this is a little bit extra for them. >> they do it in a different location with a different thing every single time, always at least one por two seals that are part of the team. insane. >> they're a little more slowly. >> we'll be back in a little bit. when it comes to keeping healthy, this is what you should do. fist bump. who knew that howie has been right all along.
7:52 am
7:55 am
do an experiment today, when you meet people today do that. more germs with the handshake, apparently. howie mandell turned us on to this. deal or no deal. >> with the models. >> why is this better to do the fist bump as opposed to the handshake? >> you spread ten times less germs by doing the fist bump than from shaking your hand. ten times less germs transmission.
7:56 am
now, that being said, in times of the flu and the winter might be a good idea. but i have a better idea. why don't we just isolate ourselves completely and not do anything. don't touch anybody. don't even look at them and you won't get a germ and you'll just live a long, miserable, lonely life. >> i got a problem. every time i see kerry, she kisses me right on the mouth. there's no hang shake. >> with some tongue. >> thank you query. >> i can't stop shaking somebody's hand, dr. mike. >> you have to live your life. wash your hands. don't get excited about this. if you like to fist bump, do it. i'm not all excited about this. >> i'm surprised every day when i wake up. i'm not kidding. how did i live overnight one more time. you know what i think has helped me? for 20 years i ran every other day. >> yes. >> for 20 years. and then i tore my meniscus.
7:57 am
i think that's helped me. >> it does. this new study found that even if you run slowly, five to ten minutes a day, you're going to get a tremendous benefit. 30% reduction in dying. 45% reduction in heart attacks, stroke, cardiovascular illness. the bottom line is you need to move your bones. >> did you say a 30% reduction in dying? >> overall mortality. >> you're going to live longer. >> wow. i'm going to start running. i won't die. >> can you overdo it, though? >> well, the studies show that if you exercise and run this small amount, you get the same effects as if you ran longer. >> so you're telling me i can run for five minutes and i can be like those navy seal dudes. >> yes. >> i'm not sure that -- i mean,
7:58 am
look, i'm sure the navy seals would welcome you with open arms. but the bottom line is that you run into arthritis and knee replacements. you know, runners, if you talk to them, it's a lot of it is the endorphins. it's feeling good. >> you felt great at end of it. >> it's the last time you felt good. >> i'm kind of like a seal. like a blubbery seal. quickly here, thank god this happening over in the united states of america. explain to me again what ebola is. >> ebola is a type of virus that has a 90% mortality. it's a bad actor. and it causes bleeding and it's just a terrible virus. >> no cure. >> now what's concerning a little bit is that there are
7:59 am
more and more cases in africa. and one case of someone who got on a plane and traveled to another part of africa. now, the thing is, it can take up to 21 days for someone to become symptomatic. to say i'm not feeling well, i have a problem. the good news is you have to have direct contact with someone. if they're vomiting or excrement, for a better word. you need to come into direct contact with body fluids to get it. so not to worry, but it's something we're watching very closely. >> love you. >> virtual. >> love you, kerry. >> love you. >> and you. >> it's like you hang up first. no you hang up first. i love you. i love you more. >> good day to you. we love you. it's july 29, 2014.

while those little kids were out here selling bottled water, fruit and vegetables for a church that they went to and the name of it was eagles wings evangelical. three little children now with angels wings. >> weather is certainly looking good. it certainly doesn't feel like july out here. it feels almost like autumn. how long is it going to stay this way? we'll have your forecast coming up. >> what's quincy up to today? >> i'm going vertical. i'm going rock climbing, indoor rock climbing gym here. as you guys can see. what are you doing? >> reporter: we know that the navy seal work out guys have boats, how about they put them in the water. you're never going to believe the next part of this workout.
8:01 am
>> i'm not going to believe it. >> i won't do it. >> let's get an assignment together. what do you say? >> to do a navy seal workout? >> no. what can you only do in new jersey. so this is the hashtag. we have a list of things that only happen in new jersey like tan mom. >> brawling in a tan mom. >> does any other place name their res stops after historical figures. >> don't tweet that. something else that you know about. i've got more time on my hands because i've got a great forecast for today. it's a 10 out of 10. sunny and dry and cool for july. wait until you see the high temperature for today. it's not the 91 we had on sunday. bus stop buddy is ready for some pool time today. it is a sunglasses kind of
8:02 am
morning. temperatures are in the 50s and 60s this morning. looking good out there. 66 degrees here in the city with a north northwesterly breeze at 8 miles an hour. there's your high temperature today. 80 degrees. we may not even make it to 80. is this july? >> it feels like autumn. >> i know. just kidding. don't get nervous everyone. so let's go to north brunswick. we do have a water main break. good news here we had this accident, old baltimore pike was completely shut down. it's out of your way. it's clear. you don't have to worry about problems there anymore. gloucester city problems here though. walt whitman bridge debris blocking your right lane.
8:03 am
76 really jammed. >> it's 8:03. our top story this morning, two men now charged with a choel slew of charges in connection with a car jacking that ended with the death of three kids. >> the whole country is following this case. steve is where it happened in north philly. >> reporter: lots of buses and a lot of morning traffic but ten hours now from the evening rush, traffic will likely be stopped and there will be a massive crowd out here at this corner because there's a vigil set for tonight at 6:00. this spot started with a single cross on friday. it will seen soon see a permanent immovable marker. the city owns the land here. the council president says he's going to get a memorial park here to honor the three kids killed as their mother continues to fight for her life, still critically wounded, still in that medically induced coma.
8:04 am
a lot of people figure she won't be well enough to attend this kid's funeral on monday. and i'm hoping now she'll survive and since she's in the coma since the crash, she doesn't even know her three kids are gone. the latest legal moves, overnight these two have been arraigned, no bail. moved from police headquarters at 2:30 this morning to prison to get a taste of what the rest of their lives is going to look like, charged with enough to keep them locked up forever to begin life sentences, their ages just 19 and 24. for the older of the two, he started a life of serious crime at the age of 14. paroled twice recently, last time just in october. freed back here on the streets to meet up with the 19-year-old just one week before what happened that friday. that changed a whole lot of lives forever. where he became friends with
8:05 am
that kid just one week before. he followed the 24-year-old instead of stopping him. >> what he comprehends is that three kids were dead and he was in the car when that happened. and he cannot get the mental image of that girl coming across the hood of his car out of his head. and he's trying to do everything he can to try and make it better and cooperating with the police is the first step. he's 19, graduated high school and he's supposed to go in the marines in a couple of months. this is so aberrational, that this is what happens. you get into a car and nobody ever intends for anybody to get killed. nobody intends for three children to get run down. unfortunately sometimes you get into a car you cannot control what happens. and the law is going to hold you responsible for it. >> we have these guys, which are killers, off the street. we don't have to worry about them going around killing no one
8:06 am
else and justice will be served to the full extent and making the family is very happy about that. >> reporter: the district attorney making some news in our 7:30 half hour. saying he's meeting with state parole and corrections leaders to see if, and who and how someone or some people dropped the ball by not keeping cornelius crawford in prison. they don't want to add to the mother's agony by not forcing both to relive and retell the last moments in open court and just maybe find one last drop of decency in them to just plead before any trial. but we'll have to wait and see what happens there as they begin their long legal steps now

his brother with special needs complete a triathlon. >> he has a rare condition that's left him unable to walk or talk. but that didn't stop him from finishing a youth triathlon thanks to his big brother noah. he pulled and pushed lucas the entire time as he swam, biked and ran. the boys trained for three months and the hard work really paid off. they finished the race in just under an hour. noah pushed lucas in a jogging stroller, pulled it behind his bike and made the swim with a harness around his chest that was attached to a raft that held his brother. can you imagine being the parents? they must be so proud. the parents say that noah and lucas share a very special bond and it goes way beyond what they just did. >> nicely done. >> chris, can i say thank you
8:09 am
for that feel-good story? >> i say tomato not tow may to by the way. >> lets get back to something nauseating. the bachelor et last night. >> the whole thing is nauseating. josh murray wins the final rose on the bachelorette. and now we're getting some inside scoop from his possible future sister-in-law, kacie mcdonnell. she dates his brother. >> they never get married. >> one out of the whole history. >> and trista and ryan. >> he's a firefighter in colorado. >> speaking of colorado where i think they live, candy, granola bars, gummy bears, just about anything else you can think of can be infused with pot.

this is a very good weather day. and if you happen to be at the beach, nice day. it's not going to be a hot day. a dip in the 73 ocean will be refreshing but it sure will be nice, hopefully under your em umbrella with your flip flots by your side. no rip currents. no rape here and none in the forecast. so let's check temperatures. they've been on the cool side all morning. they still are. it's 66 degrees in philadelphia. 56 up in the mountains. and just about everybody has entered the 60s. but the question is will we get out of the 70s at all today. and mostly the northeasterly breezes down in dover, 13 miles an hour up in the mountains. nothing excessive there, just kind of refreshing. the breezes blow the pollen around and if you have seasonal
8:14 am
allergies by thursday you'll probably be troubled a little more by those allergies. it was a decent monday with yesterday's high of 87 degrees, 84 when it should have been 87. 80 if we're lucky today and the lower 80s on wednesday and thursday. that looks all fine and good. here we get to the weekend where it gets a little unsettled. pop-up thunderstorms on friday. maybe a scattered shorm on saturday or sunday. that's the early call on the weekend. >> getting to a few incidents this morning. burlington if you're heading out, salem road shutting down. campus drive to jfk way, sunset road the alternate. gloucester city this just cleared. you did have debris blocking the right lane. out of your way this morning. and another accident springfield germantown pike. >> how about this legalization of marijuana in some form has spread now to over 30 states in
8:15 am
america. new jersey is one of them. pennsylvania may be next. >> illegal pot may not look like you may think. fox 29's chris o'connell has the story from colorado. >> reporter: you may confuse this case with an art gallery. join thought he may have wandered into an apple store. but look a little closer. yaul see they're not selling smart phones. >> wow, i never thought i would see the day. >> reporter: that day was january 1st when recreational marijuana become legal for anyone 21 and over. since then the pot industry has been smoking. >> the voice you were hearing is pennsylvania state senator leach is now back from colorado himself and is leading the charge to legalize at least medical marijuana in
8:16 am
pennsylvania. good to see you. >> good to be here. >> so just medical marijuana is what you're bringing up. >> i actually have a bill for medical and what they call adult use. they are two separate issues. i think we'll have medical marijuana pass by the end of this year which is very important because a lot of sick people will benefit from it. >> if you bring you will medical marijuana what's the vote going to be? >> it's about 45 to 5. 85% of pennsylvanians support this. >> and the governor kind of agrees now? >> the governor conceptually has said he's looking at it, but he's still an impediment to this. he wants to do a very limited thing that's not going to get most people the medicine they need. we need the bill that i introduced, 1182, which is going to get anyone who needs it, anyone who has a doctor, doctors
8:17 am
are on the hook for this. >> are you going to get the vote by the end of the week? >> when we go back. september 16th. i believe that week we will have that vote in the senate. >> so what, you know, you're also talking about recreational marijuana. somewhere down the road. there's got to be some down sides to that, too. it's not an issue without controversialcy. >> it's not without controversy, but less controversy, about 59% of the people support that. we're going to see two more sulfates and the district of columbia do it this year. >> okay. let's say you took a vote for recreational marijuana in the state of pennsylvania, what's the vote going to be? >> if it's a secret ballot i passes overwhelmingly. but politicians are safe by nature. i am not but most ar are. i think they want to see a little more progress down the line. that's fine. one of the reasons i went to see what they're doing in colorado is t see what they've done right
8:18 am
and wrong and the mistakes they've made. >> they say their crime rate has gone down and their economy is booming. >> i saw with my own eyes what it's going to the economy. there's so many aspects of this, from the testing to the growing to the distribution to the apparel. millions and millions of tax dlars are coming into colorado. lots of jobs are being create the. >> the argument you are going to get, let me have our police commissioner charles ramsey have this take. >> gate way to other drugs. again we have a drug problem in our country and we need to be investing in treatment and prevention. i've seen people make comparisons to alcohol and so forth. if you go buy a bottle of scotch somewhere, you know it's manufactured in a particular way it's going to be manufactured the same strength and everything. marijuana is all over the place. they're starting to find now in states that have legalized that it's very difficult to control. the edible versions, kids are
8:19 am
getting ahold of it. >> you mentioned having it look like candy is a mistake. what's your retort to that. >> i wish the chief came out to colorado with me. the fact is the dosages are exact. there are labs with very, very intelligent, sophisticated processes going forth that tells you exactly what you're getting. it's exactly like alcohol in that respect. i think it's important we do that. we want a tightly regulated market. weigh want to make sure kids aren't getting it, and when you get it you know what you're getting. but colorado, i was just there. people there are extremely happy with what's happening there. because they can live their lives as they wish, they have a better economy as a result of it. crime is down. traffic accidents are down. use among teens is down because it's no longer cool because it's legal. >> you still have street dealers? >> i didn't see any street dealers. the street dealers have largely gone away on marijuana.
8:20 am
