tablet or laptop. this is fox 29 weekend. from our home right here at 4th and market on old city on a rainy morning, welcome to fox 29 weekend. thank you for joining us on this saturday. maybe some of your plans will be changing because of the weather. >> karen hepp, lauren johnson, we've got so much news to get to this morning. >> there's something that happened in this very studio yesterday, we will explain and tell you how you can get involved in this one. first we want to get you caught up on the weather. take a live look outside our studios. it is a soggy start. someone on twitter said i love the rain. the i do too, my hair hates it. >> i've got the kinks to show it it doesn't take much when you're
8:02 am
out in the rain with the hair. not enough hot tools out there this morning. and we do have the rain through the rest of the morning, despite the clearing we have had a pretty good soaking ofr night. there are a lot of activities today including temple football. and our executive producer got a tweet from john marks and he wants to know is it going to be a washout for the game? by the time we hit noon, most of the steady rain should start to break up. we're just seeing some leftover showers at that point and we should start to see some clearing through the rest of the day. we'll see the clearing, following that we'll start to see maybe a little bit of sunshine but it will be a chilly, rainy type of morning. your forecast for the temple game itself, 55 degrees, scattered showers as we start you off as we go through the game the rain will wind down. we'll see some improvement as we go through the day.
8:03 am
a lot of moisture moving in all morning long. it's streaming in from southwest to northeast. it started overnight. those scattered showers will continue through about noon. zooming in the developed area, we're in the hard of it right now. it's a lot of green rain, it's a lot of steady rain and it's just one of those sleep-in type of mornings. once the rain passes it will be cold. frost advisory in effect in the poconos. 49 allentown, 53 in philadelphia, 53 in millville. visibility is low in some spots, that's just due to the low clouds and all the rain. be careful on the roads, we've got low visibility and also some ponding and maybe a little street flooding where you are. steady rain tapering off this afternoon, we clear out tonight and it turns very cold.
8:04 am
only 45 in the city, we'll talk about more lows in the 30s after the show. >> new this morning, seven teachers facing charges in connection with an alleged hazing incident in central new jersey. >> they are students at sayreville war memorial high school. police say they have sixteen agers in custody. they're still looking for a seventh. we're taking a closer look at the alleged incident and what upset parents have to say. >> also this morning, another data breach. sears holdings say k-mart customers may have been hacked. it's just the latest in a strong of incidents that have hit major retailers including target and home depot. money and the philadelphia school this week. they took the step of canceling the expired contract with the teachers union.
8:05 am
the commission has long said everybody needs to make sacrifices to help our under funded school accident. the president of the federation of teachers not ready to make this particular sacrifice just yet. >> what the district has done is said we want it all. we want it all. and that is unacceptable and we will not agree to it. >> there has been a very, very strong reaction on social media with kelly ann saying strike, walk out, sick out, something has to be done. amelia writing, there are words to express how i feel, but most of them are not safe for work. so here to talk about this issue, two of our experts, we've got shana and kyle olson with the education action group. kyle, what do you think about this decision in order to have the teachers pay more for health
8:06 am
care? >> i think it's a trend in the right direction. if you look at the spending as we as done in the philadelphia district, teachers historically have paid about 1% toward their health care. now they're going to be paying 10% to 13%. the private sector pays 30%. so i think it's a step in the right direction. >> shanae, what do you think? >> i think this is not really a debate about whether or not teachers should contribute to their benefits. the pst said they would be willing to make concessions. the issue is whether or not this is going to impact students and the terms of the conditions, we're what this means in competitiveness in terms of other districts in our region. health care was one of the things that our teachers had over their suburban counterpart and we're concerned what that means. >> some of the criticisms of the
8:07 am
district about the teachers specifically are the grown-ups are too worried about the grown-ups and less worried about the children. >> i think that one of the things that we know is that about 70% of our teachers leave their profession after six years. so in our high-needs schools that number can get high as 30% to 40%. when you already have teachers who are making less than their suburban counterparts, you wonder what choices adults will be forced to make. i think whether or not this supports our positions, we know that teachers are coming out of pocket and working under really difficult conditions doing everything from buying food for students and also paper and toner and those kinds of things. >> is that a true statement, that the philadelphia teachers are actually learning less than their suburban counterparts in the philadelphia area? >> yes. we have about 66 schools in the
8:08 am
suburbs and our teachers are in the bottom. what we see here is the ripple effect of disinvestment at the state level. >> what do you think about this one? sign of the times and a tough choices need to be made. we'rization if we're not paying our teachers competitively we're going to lose them. what do you think? >> i think that's a valid argument. but look at historically what's being gone on with the district. they've always been asking more money so they can open the doors. but there has never been a real serious focus on cost containment. in our research we have found that the school district has spend per yu $2.3 million on unionized employees. it's those sort of expenditures that cannot continue. >> thank you for joining us this

morning and feel free to sound off about this one. just use the hashtag. >> happening now an epic ride, two days, 150-plus miles, hundreds of bike riders just leaving on what they're calling a ride to conquer cancer. fox 29 is a proud sponsor and we have an entire crew riding. is everybody all bundled up? it's wet out there. >> reporter: we got off to a rainy start. but that didn't do much to dampen the spirits of 500 riders who came out here to support the cause ride to conquer cancer. they're raising close to $2 million through this ride. all of that going for cancer research.
