but it is tree. we've got about weather. right now the clouds have been increasing automatic night long. ahead of the system that's been a bit of a mix as well as down into parts of virginia and west virginia, mainly rain in the southeast and the carolinas. but because of high pressure towards our north, that's going to suppress any of the moisture, keep it towards our south. we will feel the effects of this high pressure system feeling very cold temperatures. winds are fairly light but enough for some of us to knock those wind chills down into the teens or the 20s. it feels like 26 in philadelphia. it is cold, it feels kind of icy out there this morning. fox futurecast as we go through today, we continue to see the clouds stream on through. very limited sunshine, but it won't be bad into tonight. sunday itself i think we need some more sunshine, monday looks
8:03 am
good too. that's three great days with no problems. it's cold, 33 degrees. a high temperature with just 39 with sunny skies. the seven-day forecast is featuring a warm up and some wet weather. >> happening right now, so much shopping going on. i already saw the highways were busier out and about. retailers are slashing prices, extending their hours and doing everything they can to get you to spend your money. >> if you have last minute gifts to grab, you're in perfectly good company. >> the cold in ben salem. good morning, sabina. >> reporter: good morning. this is pretty cool for me. this is the kohls i grew up
8:04 am
going to. now kohls is open 100 hours straight through christmas eve. basically they opened yesterday and they didn't close. it's the second year they've done this. they say they've gotten a steady stream of people coming in all through the night. as we've been here there's been plenty of people all around. it's part of retailers' push to get last-minute shoppers through the door here. so far the work essay it's a pretty big hit. >> it's great for the community. we have shift workers coming in, we have from the casinos, from the hospital. we are here. >> i saw a commercial, it's 24 hours. so i figure i work. so it's a good time for me to come in. it's not crowded, take advantage of that. >> last minute holiday shopping, i'm trying to do. so usually i'm a last minute guy so try to get it in. >> i think we can all relate to
8:05 am
that. who doesn't need to still pick up some last minute gifts. four days until christmas and as soon as you walk in the doors, they are just bombarding you with stuff. right here, chocolate santa clauss, all kinds of stuff. prices are slashed all over the place. this is that important time for retailers. they want to get you in the door so they can bump up the sale before the end of the year. that's the latest. >> so much fun there. we want to see your holiday pictures and also your videos. post it anywhere on facebook, social media, use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> and we have a warning this season. pickpockets may be targeting you. several suspects have been caught on camera stealing wallets from shoppers in cherry hill. >> somebody will walk up and start talking to you while another person comes up behind
8:06 am
you and removes your credit card or your wallet from your handbag. >> and police say once the thieves get your wallet they go on an instant shopping spree at nearby stores. keep your handbag flat facing you, don't leave it unattended and do not hang it on the back of a chair in a restaurant. >> police are investigating a homicide in northeast philadelphia. this happened just before 2:00 this morning. police say officers responded to a burglary call and when they got there, there was a man's body in that home. we don't know how he died. we're continuing to stay on top of the story and we'll be bringing you updates later in the news cast . >> one person is dead following a shooting at 3:15 this morning. so far no suspects. >> our cover story this morning, it is trending. the fallout over the sony hack continuing with a war of words
8:07 am
between companies skufs and the president of the united states. during his press conference, he confirmed north korea did carry out that attack on sony's symptoms. >> i think they made a mistake. i wish they had spoken to me first. i would have told them, do not get into a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal attacks. >> hours later, sony released a statement. let us be clear, the only decision we have made with respect to the release of the film was not to release it on christmas day in theaters after the theater owners declined to show it. we had no choice. will, joining us right now, we've got attorney ken

rothweiler. the let's look at some of the facebook comments. deborah writes, i don't think they should have cancelled it. since when we do we have to give in to threats and terrorism. >> the first time i saw the commercial for this movie i thought to myself are we that much of idiots? why in the world we would make a movie making fun of a dictator in another country. >> why take a chance for any harm to come to anyone? no movie is worth the lives of innocent people who believe they will be safe. let's get right to, what do you think about this? i find it absolutely shocking that we would cancel a movie in the wake of a hack. >> i agree with that. and so does president obama. but what's interesting, if you listen to the executives at sony, we're going to get to see this movie. i don't think there's any doubt about it. they're making arrangements right now with netflix or youtube. there's going to be another avenue for this movie to be seen.
8:09 am
from a commercial perspective, there's been so much talk about this movie, that once it comes out, i think everybody is going to want to see it. so you know, when people think that there's actually been censorship and we won't see the movie, i think everybody is going to be talking about this movie in some other avenue and we're going to be able to see it. >> george clooney came out yesterday blasting skufs at sony saying he was trying behind the scenes to get them to sign on to say we're not going to back down much like they did after september 11th where people say we're going to go on living our lives and he said he could not get any executives from any of the movie houses to sign on to this because they were so afraid. >> everybody is cautious right now. everybody is a little afraid to sign on to this because everybody is afraid of being hacked themselves. this is pretty sophisticated stuff that north korea has done. just so you know in terms of background, for years north
8:10 am
korea has been attacking south korea. they shut down their tv stations at one point. they have a very, very sophisticated network. it's called bureau 121. they basically have thousands of cyber terrorists in north korea. their total job is to basically disrupt other people's cyber networks. so these companies in the united states are cautious, but i in the end i think we're going to see the film for sure. >> all right, ken. thank you. we appreciate you coming in bright and early on this morning. take care, have a great rest of the weekend. >> happy holiday. >> you too. thanks again. >> a fraternity at the university of pennsylvania is in some big trouble over a gag gift. the plastic blow-up doll in their holiday card has so many people talking in social media. are they going too far or are people becoming too sensitive? you made your holiday guest

[ bleep ] me off this week. a woman is caught on camera robbing a wawa. the suspect walks behind the kounder, grabs the clerk from behind, startled, the clerk drops the cash, she picks it up and takes off. when i look at this video i see something that is alarming. first is it shows what we're starting to see, more and more robberies being committed by women. the second thing is, this type of robbery, in my opinion, somebody with some type of drug addiction. this was a brazen broad.

education. omg, i think in this case people are overreacting. and this comment slams us right at us. fox, get over yourselves. this is not news. these are fraternity guys acting like fraternity guys. stop making everything a racist intent. you are just stirring up the hornet's nest here. i'm going to start with you chad at the university of pennsylvania. when you saw this card, what do you think about it? >> i don't think it was racist, but i think it was racially insensitive. it was despicable. we see a lot of these behaviors around the holiday season. i think it's more than just a prank. i think we really need to look at why there seems to be this love affair with black culture but not the burdens of living in the black body. >> john, what do you think when you see this christmas card? >> well, i'm offended by the
8:18 am
cowboys jersey, but to your point. i don't see this as racial. i don't like fraternities in general, but this was a gag gifrt, i don't like blow-up dolls and the whole thing. if this were kate uptown, would we hear the mysogenous. these are crass kids in a fraternity. >> a lot of the minority groups are incensed and we've spoken out about this. we've seen white students adorning blackface. they come to parties portraying images of gangsters. it is racially insensitive because we're talking about once again white bodies in position
8:19 am
with a black female body and we're looking at historical factors. i'm not saying that some of these students are looking at that, but i don't want to discount that they didn't understand the impact this would have. sending out a christmas card, it's the racial insensitivity for some of those who say oh, we're not being insensitive. >> if these guys were dressings up in mexican garb or blackface, i would agree with you. but these guys are playing with blow-up dolls and i think this one just happened to be black. >> i don't think it just happened to be black, don. but the cultural image just doesn't look right and it's very sexist. it's deeply rooted and a lot of times on these college campuses these fraternities know full well what they're doing.
8:20 am
and when they get caught they're sorry for doing it. >> thank you for your opinions. >> thank you. >> a lot of people have opinions on this. let us know what you think of that christmas card. just use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> counting today you have four shopping days left. if you're stressed, we might be able to help you. there's an app for that. the best one that might help you tackle that list. >> we're already weighing in. he says really, we're going to let a dictator dictate to us. i don't usually go to the movies, but if they play it, we'll go. we've got this nice picture here, thank you for sending this one in. of course eagles game day. we've golf game day live afterwards. send us your pictures, your game day, your shopping. let's continue this conversation. >> the fox 29 weekend jukebox is playing your tunes all weekend long. mr. telephone man by new

a new app raising a whole lot of eyebrows. it's called driving while black, it's created by a lawyer. the purpose is to give black people, people of color and others who may be targeted for traffic stops helpful information and tools to improve traffic stop experiences, safety, accountability and also justice. this app sounds great, can't wait to try it out once released. christine writes really disheartening and disappointing that this needs to exist. so let's talk about this right now. we've got the guy behind the whole thing, the app developer. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> let me start with you, melvin. what's the reason behind this app? >> well, the reason behind the app was my partner felt there was a need out there, a yearning for people to know what their rights are when they're engaged in traffic stops so we thought
9:07 am
we would take on the burden of putting something like that together. >> so the goal, if you all of a sudden are driving down the highway and you see flashing lights behind you, you could open this app and get information if you are in the middle of a traffic stop, is that the goal? >> no, that is not the goal. i think the goals are what you stated, safety, accountability and justice. so for the most part, the app really talks about, it gives you an opportunity to learn about what to expect in traffic stops, in advance of the actual traffic stop, as well as it gives you resources for filing complaints or recording any concerns that you might have had during a traffic stop that you had previously. there are some functions there are a part of the app that may prove useful for some during a traffic stop. for example, there are two that come to mind. one of them is an alert function that we've programmed into it that will allow you to if you're
9:08 am
being pulled over, to immediately send a text to predetermined individuals so that they know, it will say something like i've been pulled over in this location. if you don't hear from me in 20 minutes, i may have been arrested. >> what goes through your mind when you hear about this? >> two issues. worn is from a law enforcement perspective, what this app will do it will help exxon rate police officers from the overwhelming number of false allegations of racial profilings. that's the positive side. here's the negative side. the app that's putting on the phone, you're asking someone to make a lot of moment in the car. they've got to grab that phone. a police officer is not going to know if that is a phone or a weapon. and what's really troubling about this, and i don't know if melvin knows this, criminals have modified cell phones into two-shot guns. in other words there's two bullets in somebody's cell

phones to be used against police officers. what this is going to do is place the driver and a police officer in danger. and the lawsuits are going to be coming. and i've got to tell you, this is counterproductive to what the minority or what the african-american community has been trying to do with the police vice versa. this is counterproductive and it's downright dangerous. >> we're trying to build trust and there's a lot of mistrust at this time. people will think this app is kind of -- it certainly is getting a lot of attention. there's certainly going to be supporters and detractors about it. >> yeah. so i would probably address the officer's concerns by first saying that the app is about safety. one of the things that we know is that there is a -- there has become this rage of people recording police doing their business. what we decided to do is to talk
9:10 am
to people about what they should be doing during a traffic stop. the first one is not reaching for your phone. the not pulling the phone out in an officer's face. we, in our app, what we talk about is having your phone mounted on your dashboard in a hands-free device. so that you do not have to reach for your phone to record a traffic stop, to activate the alerts or anything. we advise people to make sure that the officers feel safe. because this is about safety for the driver as well as for the officer. we want everyone to leave these engagements alive. >> tell a 17-year-old kid do that, that's fine. but you know what kids do. it's going to end up in a real disaster situation. >> melvin, for this app, you think it's going to come out in the next two weeks, how much does it cost? >> we've committed to making it free through the month of
9:11 am
january. >> certainly people will continue to talk about it and make personal decisions if this is something they want to have on their own phones. thank you for your time. i appreciate it. >> thank you. >> what do you think about this app? obviously a lot of people are talking about it. please weigh this and join our conversation. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> and people are already responding. you heard from the originator of the app and now we're hearing from people on the social media sites. they're making racism more deep. there's also really you need an app to drive safely, wow. thanks for your comments. keep them coming. >> coming up, are you traveling for the holidays? where do you like to sit if you happen to be flying? are you a window person? or maybe you actually like that middle seat. you can tell us and we'll tell you what your seat choice says about you. plus, ho ho ho.
