♪ >> good evening welcome to this fox 29 special report 2014, a year in review. i'm lucy noland. >> i'm he yann page. 2014 comeing to close and what a 12 months it was. >> fox's shepherd smith takes a look at this year's top stories. >> reporter: 2014 brought more gridlock in congress, tension at home and around the globe, a deadly outbreak and a historic election. the year started with a pay raise for local income workers. higher minimum wages took effect in 13 states and president obama signed an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers. gay rights also took major steps forward. same sex marriage now legal in 35 states and the district after series of federal court rulings throughout the year.

2014 saw the start of the worst ebola outbreak in history. the virus has killed more than 5,000 people in west africa. thomas duncan was the first patient diagnose in the united states. doctors say he came down with the disease in liberia and died at a hospital in dallas. his treatment led to the infection of two nurses who later recovered. >> russia took over the crimean peninsula and stirred up even more trouble in eastern ukraine. the u.s. slapped financial punishments and moscow and then the downing of malaysian airline flight 17 over ukraine killed all 298 people on board. pro russian rebels and government forces blamed each other. another malaysia airlines flight mh370 disappeared in march it's still missing. nobody has found one sign of that jet. in washington state a huge mudslide engulfed an entire neighborhood destroying homes and killing dozen of people. general motors recalled record

30 million vehicles because of safety problems. including faulty ignition switches, blamed for at least three dozen deaths. the ceo mary barra told congress the company will do whatever it takes to compensate the victims. in nevada a tense standoff between the federal government and supporters of rancher liven bundy he refuses to pay grazing fees to the bureau of land management. most of the armed protesters left but bundy has not resolved his payment dispute. >> the militant group kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in nigeria and threatened to sell them as sex slaves. at last word activists said most of the girls were still in captivity. the first major tornado outbreak of the year hit the united states in late april. the twisters killed more than 30 people in the midwest and the south. >> a major scandal rocked the veterans administration. the va secretary general resigned over the summer after revelations of long waits for

appointments and secret waiting lists at va hospitals. the department announced a major overhaul several months later. the taliban released the american prisoner bowe bergdahl in he can change for five detainees from guantonimo bay. the us military launched an investigation into whether bergdahl deserted his post before the taliban captured him. >> the islamic state began a major offensive capturing huge areas of eastern syria and northern iraq. the american led coalition launched air strikes against isis targets and the us sent thousands of so-called military advisers to the ground in iraq. but president obama insists he will not send us combat troops. israel invaded the gaza strip over the summer. the conflict fueled by the killing of three israeli teenagers by palestinian militants. the fighting ended with a cease fire. >> in the town of ferguson missouri protests turned violent after the police shooting of an unarmed teenager

michael brown. a grand jury decided not to bring charges against officer darren wilson that sparked new violence in ferguson and protests all across our country. in august, robin william took his own life at the age of 63. his suicide put a new spotlight on depression and mental health. >> in pennsylvania a huge manhunt for eric matthew 14. the 31-year-old survival lift accused of shooting two state troopers killing one of them. u.s. marshals finally captured frein at the end of october after he'd spent six weeks on the run. a milestone for lower manhattan. one world trade center opened its doors for the first time to new tenants more than eight years after construction began. >> the 2014 elections ended with a gop bank. republicans winning control of the senate and adding to their large majority in the house. washington ended the year with a contentious fight over immigration reform.

least three people jumped the fence, several caught the secret service off guard omar gonzales made it all the way to the east room before finally being tackled by agents. secret service director julia pearson took a hit as well and stepped down. >> over at the va, secretary shinseki took the fall as well. after his agency was shamed by reports that 40 veterans at the phoenix va died while waiting for care. almost 100va facilities are now under investigation. and the strange story of army sergeant bowe bergdahl gripped the nation as he was turned over in exchange for five get mow detainees. some in congress were outraged that they were not consulted and while an earlier report called bergdahl a deserter he's now being re-investigateed and is on desk duty. >> the stupidity of the american voter or whatever. >> there was jonathan gruber, unknown to most until the mit economic professor and architect of obama care accused of americans of being too dumb to understand that obama care would actually cost them more.

>> we caught up with the professor but this time he was done talking for the moment. >> i have no comment. >> reporter:. >> don't bring black and don't come. >> reporter: a foul for donald sterling. the former la clippers owner, he was heard making racist remarks to his girlfriend v steve steve. the nba banned him for life and fineed him 2.5 billion. steve ballmer caught receipt bound and bought the team. tent 2014 ray rice and his wife would probably like to forget. the former nfl star got his own one-two punch from devastating videos of him hitting his then fiance' and knocking her out in an elevator. wants tmz aired the second and more awful video rice was then suspended but that was over turned as the focus turn to the nfl and what they knew and when about the whole thing. suspension lived rice is now hoping to get back in the game. >> adrian peterson took a plea deal after pictures of his four-year-old son's beaten legs

♪ >> welcome back to this fox 29 special report 2014 a look back. from fires to floods we saw mother nature's wrath all over the country. fox news meteorologist maria molina looks at the year in weather. >> reporter: a heat wave in the middle of winter hits california. the same experiences warmest winter in more than 100 years. while the west coast bakes the east coast freezes. snow and sleet rattle the midwest and northeast a record 70 total inches of snowfall on chicago with wind chills 20 below zero. >> at the same time high winds in oregon cause he can treatmently rare wildfires to flare up burning hundreds of acres. down under australia continues its record heat wave temperatures as high as 111 degrees for days on end. the heat affects affects wildlife causing dehydration for many out back species.

from down under to down south here in the us a light dusting of snow crippled birmingham alabama and atlanta georgia. miles of traffic backs up keeping drivers stranded in cars for up to 20 hours. snow overseas also stops traffic in tokyo japan 11-inches cover the city of 13 million. the heaviest snowfall in 45 years. as spring rolled in so did the rains. 36 hours of heavy rain playing the gulf coast causing flash flooding in florida and alabama and record warmth for the world's coldest city in russia. temperatures reaching a high of 9 degrees fahrenheit. that may not sound warm but when normal high is 51 degrees below zero that's high. >> a bizarre scene in michigan over memorial day. giant chunks of ice flood lake superior while beach goers gaze in amazement. summer heat turns to flames in washington and oregon state. thousands of acres burn causing

dry, warm or cool. i'm meteorologist maria molina fox news. >> surveillance cameras are practically everywhere. they have captured some funny some scary and some amazeing moments this year. fox's jonathan hun takes look back at 2014 caught on camera. and a word of warning, some of the video you're about to see is in fact graphic. ♪ >> reporter: retail stores and gas stationings are often a treasure trophy of bizarre behavior. a cop in ohio arrested for pilfering popcorn from a convenience store. he pays for one bag but leaves with two. the store own are in says there was no buy one get one promotion at the time. two men, one machete that's how this brazen robbery went down in south florida. the suspects made off with whole lot of quarters according to the store clerk who escaped unharmed. this california store clerk however got a bloody nose after she was clubbed by a customer. it wasn't a stick up according to police, simply an unprovoked

attack. an ohio man enlists the help of a toddler to break into laundromat. you can see him hoisting the kid to disconnect surveillance cameras. >> i just couldn't believe what i was seeing on the video. as parent it's appalling. >> reporter: good samaritans in the city of brotherly love coming to the rescue of this woman who narrowly escaped death when she fell on to the tracks near the third rail. a similar story in the city of angels where a blind man fell on to the tracks and was trapped beneath the train for some twenty seven minutes before being rescued. he managed to escape with just a few 96 and scrapes. and talk about a group effort. dozens of people coming to the aid of a man who apparently did not mind the gap. his leg got caught between the platform and a subway car setting the wheels in motion for a flash mob rescue. >> really hard to find an incident like this where everyone pitches in. >> who knew so much drama would go down when you're going up

2014 turned out to be quite a year of violent in the elevator. no love in this list in a manhattan hotel it shows beyonce' younger sister in an all out brawl with brother-in-law jay-z. the trio later releasing a statement saying "families have problems and we're no different" different". the fallout was even more for this couple raven's star ray rice caught on tape viciously attacking his then fiance' now wife janay palmer. this incident set off a national debate on domestic violence in sports and jeopardized the career of the former baltimore running back. we'll end on lighter note. on the streets of russia a driver capturing this truly bizarre scene. a real cast of characters going after this driver during a road rage incident. some say it was staged. we say it's worth watching a few times. in new york, jonathan hunt, fox
