7:00 am
we have breaking news outside of paris, france. these two guys are surrounded by police officers, probably close to a thousand cops. but they have a his stage situation, about about 25 miles northeast of paris. we have cameras there we will keep you updated. is there a new drug that is more potent than pure heroin, most scary part is there an anecdote that has no effect if someone overdoses. what you should look out for. >> that is on our streets. so, we have basically a squall line of snowstorms moving through. you it might start snowing here any second. >> yes. >> it has been what. >> up and down, in and out. >> and this cold weather could affect your commute but not the way that you think. why weather is shutting down traffic lights. this could be, dangerous.
7:01 am
okay. by the the way, it is national law enforcement a appreciation day and i had no idea this would get such a response. you are sending in a lot of pictures on twitter, facebook. if you have somebody in your life who maybe is in law enforcement or you yourself, that is fine send in a pick. >> yes. >> you have your police sweater on. >> i have my blue on today. camille, do you have a pick. >> that is me. >> look at you. >> i always said mike has a thing for police officers. every time they are around, he has to go up. i go to them before they come to me. >> can we drop that banner. you cannot quite see it. i have lavender shoes on. i said lets get a pick on the bike. >> there we go. >> yes. >> you talk about a macho man. >> do you see officers smiling. they are laughing at your shoes. >> there is no question they are laughing. >> they put you in the pad i
7:02 am
wagon for sure after that. bob will do traffic, sue will do weather. we will shake it up. that is what normally happens. >> right. >> sometimes weather and then traffic. >> good morning. >> do you want to do traffic or weather first. >> let's do traffic. >> no, weather. >> i say weather. there is snow, bob, quit hogging the show. >> it is friday, oh my god. >> we have some snow moving through. >> hey sue. >> your mike is not on. >> how about if i do traffic first and we will fix sue's mike can we do that. >> oh, no has it fallen, sue. >> good morning, everybody. a live look at 202 right here near 322 for gang through west chester. you can see the snow that we had roll through quick and early this morning leaving a dusting, a coating, on and off
7:03 am
ramps slippery rolling out of the driveway this morning. it will be tricky. here on the blue route live look at 476, ramps from saint david, villanova they are wet and with temperatures hovering 21 degrees there. there is a tendency to freeze over. penndot there is no full blown brining operation or salting operation. this is a quick hit that has quick as it came through it is out of here so they are relying on the left overs from wednesday's storm to hopefully prevent these road from freezing up. it is up to us to use caution the on the on and off ramp as we look live at 30 bypass coming from downingtown. i just heard from septa they are running with 20 minute delays on the paoli thorndale line between thorndale and malvern. be careful because platforms could be slippery this morning as well. market frankford line they are running a and b services, something they have in the done, all week but they will kick it in and give it a try on the market frankford line. broad street subway looking good. a crash here in kenneth the
7:04 am
square route one southbound right at route 82. heading to the airport you are good to go now but that could be tricky later on in the day later in the airport. >> thinks moving through pretty quickly but it is creating a little bit of the mess if you get in one of those little squals where it is a snow burst of very heavy snow in a quick period of time. it looks like that is happening perhaps in southern new castle county delaware. very light snow falling to the north of us around easton, allentown. moving south here in the city we are seeing flurries but it looks like a little snow burst around upper dash any delaware county. then we will look at the new castle county delaware right around middletown it looks like a snow burst but it is fast and furious, the snow showers an and off for next couple of hours. but buddy has in the let down his guard. he have is as bundled up a as yesterday. number is higher. the it is a five. but we have got at information
7:05 am
mentioned snow showers. the wind. 18 miles an hour. the it makes 26 degrees feels like 13. our sunrise is official at 7:22. we may inch a would have freezing with 3 degrees and afternoon sunshine but the wind will make it feel, guys, colder then it the is. 33 degrees. you won't feel like it. >> lets get back over to france. about 25 miles north east of paris where that massacre occurred. the day before yesterday. law enforcement officials say they have these two suspects , these two brothers, surrounded. here's the problem. they have a hostage. they have told them through communication on the phone these two brothers have said they want to die as mortars. >> this police standoff has been happening all morning long this is in the small northern town. the officials say brothers took a hostage and they are cornered inside a printing house. this is is happening near
7:06 am
charles degall, forcing closure of runways to arriving flights, schools in the area have been closed down. the wheel entire village has been closed off. everybody is being told to stay indoors. >> this has been going on since 4:00 o'clock our time here. so over three hours. it is in mid afternoon or just afternoon there in paris and this is about 25 miles to the north east of paris in that small village. wow. we now know more about the the background of these two brothers. investigators are trying to determine if one of the brothers did visit yemen, the the older of the two. apparently he was trying to join extremist fighters in being trained in yemen. the younger brother had spent time in jail for terrorism charges. both brothers were in the united states database of known or suspected international terrorist.
7:07 am
apparently on our radar. here at home is there a vigil for victims of that newspaper office shooting, inside philadelphia tonight. it will be held in love park at 6:00 o'clock tonight. we have more snow on the way, right here. >> yeah, on top of the fact that we are seeing below zero wind chills, we're now seeing snow, steve. >> he is in lansdale montgomery county. >> reporter: we are out of the snow now, it fell but did enough damage and bob kelly has been talking about the the the left overs. what i mean by doing damage, it got the ground wet again. this is just a reminder, talking about your blue sweater mike, that other blue stuff that is so popular in this weather, the windshield wiper fluid. now this new little bit of snow was enough to wet the ground and lift all that salt off the ground and on tour
7:08 am
wind built zero when you run out of this stuff. when the salt and precipitation combine, it really sticks there. if the snow stops and you have got no wet stuff from mother nature cleaning your windshield for you and you are out of wiper fluid you are in deep trouble because that dry stuff makes it a mess and you cannot see. make sure you have that stuff. you cannot put water in there because that will freeze the the line and it won't work in this cold temperature. we will show you the american flag blowing. we have quite a wind chill. buddy did in the let his guard. do you i was shivering out here earlier. i didn't think it would be as cold as yesterday but it felt colder to me then yesterday. we are in the parking lot. you can see what stuck in places where people have not park yet. you still solve snow. fresh coating of slippery stuff on the ground. john lawrence with his own company, lawrence landscaping, out here salting the truck. so another busy day. we can see by the side of your truck this is what i was just talking about. thinks stuff that gets on your
7:09 am
windshield. you have enough that we need to salt parking lots again, john. >> definitely. we got a lot of salt from the the last snowstorm. that melted it off. t to touch up stuff and resalt because everything has got a dusting over the whole parking lot. we have been out since about 5:00 o'clock or so. we have four or trucks that we do other shopping centers with that we're out, salting them and checking sidewalks. sidewalks have covered autopsy lot. you don't salt them as heavy as the parking lot. so we will be out for another couple hours here probably until 12:00 or so, touching everything up, and make sure everything is melting off. >> reporter: john gotten costume made lawrence landscaping had hat. he had to order a minimum of two dozen. that is his son shawn in the front seat. funny thing today's snow with pellets and it the looks like salt that you put down for your pet. we will put john's shovel back
7:10 am
in and let him shovel off. thanks, john. good luck, thanks very much. >> thanks very much. >> we are in the parking lot not just with a supermarket but here's a couple of places. we have h and r block. so tax day feels good because it is april 15th. then on the corner here how bad does that dairy queen look with those cold snow covered tables outside and wind blown flag out there. how about a blizzard. only blizzard you want is kind they sell in the summertime at dairy queen not the kind like we feel like we have been in this week. >> i walk by the dairy queen on chestnut street just yet, in between sixth and seventh. >> did you get anything. >> i do like to go in there. there wasn't one person in there. >> no. >> poor dane i queen. >> hot fudge sunday, mike in this cold would be good. >> that would be nice, with the browny underneath is this because of the cold temperatures? philadelphia traffic lights are affect. >> low temperatures mean traffic lights are more likely
7:11 am
to fail about 60 percent of the cities 3,000 traffic lights, still use technology that dates back to the 1950's. >> wow. >> with moving parts that can freeze up when temperatures get below 20 dedegrees. >> you will see lights taking longer than normal. they are slowly working and slow down. >> city is in the process of fixing this. the they are up grating lights with the computer system less affect by the cold. if you see a traffic light that is out in philadelphia this morning make sure you call 311. >> a couple items. you are saying anything maybe in the 50's is obsolete. >> in a way. >> um-hmm. >> i beg of you, i beg of you, traffic department, could we coordinate the the lights, you know, like down market street, have them change so you can just keep rolling. it is done in other cities. it can be done. >> but then would you speed. >> would i go a hundred miles
7:12 am
an hour. >> no, i promise not to. >> that is because you don't drive. you are making a promise. >> it is the cabs. >> all right. at 7:12 now exactly on this friday. police say an argument over money led to a shooting overnight. >> this was at a shopping mall parking lot. lets get jennifer joyce live from northeast philadelphia with the the story. >> reporter: well, alex, a 26 year-old man is being treated at temple trauma after he was shot here in this parking lot behind me. this is a parking lot of the wal-mart here at the philadelphia mills mall, franklin mills mall, the shooting happened around 12:30 this morning. police say a man came here to settle a debt with another man but instead of that man paying up he fired a weapon and shot the the victim three times in the chest arm and leg. now the victim's brother was actually inside the driver's seat of the car when all of this happened when he watched his brother be shot. he was in the the pennsylvania passenger seat. they immediately took the victim to the hospital. police say that they have
7:13 am
already retrieved, and reviewed, store surveillance video which clearly shows what happened. >> you can see the flash of the weapon and the shots being fired and then the victim's vehicle will the scene and shooter runs back into his vehicle, gets in the drivers seed and also takes off from the scene. the it the is recorded on store surveillance camera. >> reporter: police say this wal-mart is opened 24 hours. there were people here at the time of the shooting. police say with the surveillance cameras and with the witness that they have been talking to they do believe that they know who fired this gun. mike and alex. >> thank goodness. 7:13. new development in the search for that air asia flight, 8501. the bbc is report ago this search and rescue teams have detected signals from the plane's black box and they are racing to reach them right now.
7:14 am
meanwhile, four bodies have been recovered, just a few hours ago, that means 48 of the 162 on board have been found. as we told you yesterday a big piece of the tail was found and that is where the black box is. 7:14. new jersey state police are warning people about three highly lethal brand of drugs, that they say are responsible for recent overdose, deaths of six people. >> yeah, investigators say in these cases they found packages of heroin or a mix of unknown drugs labeled power hour, taliban, and strike dead. police say they cause a high, so dangerous that a person who overdosees on them cannot be revived, by narcan or any other device or drug used or count are act the heroin. narcan is a drug administered to reverse an overdose and save lives but it may be no good. >> there is close to 350 more or lives saved by police with
7:15 am
narcan in new jersey and that is just in the last year. >> the drug mixes have popped up so far in new jersey, pennsylvania and new york state. up investigators say some don't contain any heroin at all. so users may not know what they are getting at all. president obama wants to save millions of college students some money by making two years of community college for free. the idea still needs approval by congress. the president says would it save student on average, $3,800 in tuition each year. the federal government would pick up the tab. president other bam a is expected to expand during his state of the union address. okay, we tried this yesterday. we had really tough news to report. it is so cold this week we would do the stereo typical it is so cold jokes. so, i will go back into my club, my comedy club called, club q, club q.
7:16 am
>> yes. >> for ice cube. >> get it. >> yes, we get it. rough night last night. this could be tough. comedians always do this. >> bob, i will need you for this. could you settle down and get in your position. >> which position would you like me in. >> anything so we can get a tight shot of you. oh, for the love. >> that wasn't funny. >> i got the to stall until he gets in 30 position. can you find someplace where you are lit. this joke will lie flat if you are in the lit. there you go. >> this is a joke right here. >> behind the scenes of the comedy club, club q, for ice cube. it the is certainly cold out there welcome to the club first of all i'm mike jerrick. it is so cold. >> how cold is it. >> alex, could you help. >> it is so cold. >> how cold is it. >> it is so cold bob kelly
7:17 am
chipped his tooth on a jelly doughnut. >> we had a long way to go for that one. >> big build up for that. >> that is first joke. >> i need help on twitter. >> you don't need help. >> please write me it so cold jokes and send them on twitter. send them to alex or me, i'm mike at fox 29. she's alex holley fox 29. >> send it to me because you have trouble with your twitter. >> my twitter is down. hi sue. >> every day is an adventure at fox 29. outside, it is wintertime and look at this here, this is ahead of the cold front and this is a disturbance we didn't see coming yesterday. they didn't even issue winter weather advisory at the national weather service. it is coming through with mostly flurries, fast and furious is what we are calling it because it will drop a burst of snow and then be out of here. so let's zoom in a couple of places this morning. it looks like the border between delco and chester
7:18 am
county there you might be seeing a snow burst, just east of trenton, it looks like along i-95, and that can reduce visibility very briefly. you have to be careful if that happens. light flurries reported around the philadelphia area this morning. they are flying around. future cast shows this line weakening as it moves from northwest to south east and out of here by about 10:00 o'clock. so a couple more hours of this to go. the just be on the alert. we have lost a little bit of our temperature, data it looks like but it is 20 degrees in allentown. twenty-seven in wilmington. 28 degrees in wildwood. we have a 13-degree wind chill. it feels like four in wilmington. 17 miles an hour wind. we have seen higher wind gusts as well which is making it feel colder. look at this 25 miles an hour wind gust in wildwood. 28 miles an hour in wilmington. yesterday was the coldest day of the year so far indeed with only 21 degrees as a high temperature. we should be at 40 this time
7:19 am
of the year. in of these temperatures in the seven day forecast are at 40 degrees. so we will be below average, it looks like the year is starting off cold because we are having arctic air again tomorrow. not quite as frigid on sunday but we could have a wintry mix on monday changing over to rain and more unsettled weather coming back on thursday. so bob, we cannot just let our guard down at all. >> we cannot get a break. good morning, everybody. 7:18. live look at 422. time to make the doughnuts. we are rolling from royersford into collegeville and king of prussia everything is slower than normal because of the weather conditions and just watch it, again, it may not have covered the ramp but if that ramp is wet, there is that potential that we could have icy spots. live look at schuylkill expressway both directions slow in the area of route one. here's something else to be careful for, riding down the
7:20 am
roadway and pull in the gas station. the gas station has not been plowed or salted. that could be slippery as well. all westbound lanes of i78 for the gang in the least high valley are closed this morning at route 33 because of an accident. that is one of the the area that got hit hard with the first snow showers that rolled through. use 22, as the alternate, septa paoli thorndale is up because of equipment problems. we have platforms that could be slippery rolling out the front door this morning. mike and alex, back to you. you know, jc penny stores keep closing. now macy's and jc pennies are getting ready to close dozens of stores. it will have a local impact. the just how many people could lose their jobs. what about this story a teenager diagnosed with cancer is forced to undergo chemotherapy. she said she didn't want it even though it with give her a 85 percent chance of recovery. now the the state is stepping in forcing her to go through the treatment. are they violating perfect rights here?
7:21 am
we will talk about that here. >> that is a good
7:22 am

7:23 am
7:24 am
it is snowing at fourth and market. it is snowing in olde city just as predict by sue serio. the snow squall has gone from steve keeley's location, heading south east, moving through olde city philadelphia right new. boom. >> what does that mean? it means i'm looking back, trying to see it the through the window. >> look back at it. >> it is what? >> a smattering of snow. >> smattering. >> there is nothing matter with that. >> i was just checking our facebook page here at the station, we're this close to 500,000. let me just say half a million followers. >> friend, likes. >> i say we can get to half million by 10:00 o'clock. >> we are at 499,489 likes. >> if i was any good at math, i could tell you how many we
7:25 am
have to go to. >> 511. >> 511. >> thanks. >> that is tom, executive producer. edp of the show. >> what will we do at half a million. >> we will come up with something. >> we will think of something. >> lets get those likes going, we will have to do something. >> the half million person like when you go in the store and they throw balloons. >> you are a winnery need my cow bell back. >> hug them. >> they want more than a cow bell. >> more cow bell. >> so we just mentioned before the commercial break we were talking about macy's, jc penny, that will affect the jc penny at granite run mall in media and cumberland mall in vineland. >> lets get to lauer when more. this is happening all over. >> reporter: i'm looking for your page so i can your 499490 like. by the end of this hit that within done. >> keep an eye on it, camille.
7:26 am
>> we're talking about closures of the macy's and jc penny. about 53 in totaling, more than 4,000 people will lose their jobs as a result. first let me let you know which stores near you are closing because when a store closes you can find a good deal, right. there is two in your neck of the woods one in vineland, new jersey at cumberland mall and another one in media, pennsylvania at the granite run mall. >> yeah. >> more in the state of pennsylvania and state of new jersey but those are the jc pennies closing. for macy's no closures where you are. your they closing down? part of the reason for macy's is we all shop on line and we comparison shop. we will in the go through those tremendous macy a's stores looking for discount. we will do it on our phones. macy's is responding to our changing taste. they will have perhaps tj max type of store, off price retailer, right. >> yes. >> because we all want discounts. we love tj max. jc penny is struggling much
7:27 am
more than macy's. jc penny operates these tremendous stores that we just don't want. it is real estate they are paying for. >> jc penny has been having trouble for a while now, they have tried to change their pricing, do different branding things. >> they change logo and hired ellen degenerous to be a hip version of jc penny and it is not working. >> lauren, you have a great weekend. >> even joy. >> i can find your facebook page now. >> fox 29 philly. >> thank you. >> fox 29 philly. i'm on it now good we're watching. >> like, like i just liked it. >> what, refresh. >> look at that, we jumped big time. >> welshing thank you because you are part of the reason now. >> thank you. >> we appreciate it. >> we look like little christmas ornament. >> so much color on the screen. >> have a great weekend, we
7:28 am
will see you on monday. >> say hello to the world's smartest belt. >> hello. >> a smart belt. designers say it can help new a pinch, why they think you want it around your waste. >> say hello to
7:29 am
7:30 am
people of the coffee drinking world, dunkin' has a dark roast coffee that's deliciously roasted just right for a bold start and smooth finish that's never bitter. put down the dark roast you've been putting up with and reach for the one you deserve.
7:31 am
we have ultimate doppler radar to show you. things are clearing up from west to east. we have our snow showers and occasional snow burst. it looks like is there one in salem county, new jersey, and that is how it is happening. we have flurries a and then a snow burst. now we're in florence, new jersey looking at light snowfall around willingboro and as well as in philadelphia we have been seeing flurries, also. you you can see around pilesgrove maybe they are getting a snow bursts as well. dover delaware, middletown had some snow this morning. snow showers will be around for the the next couple of hours with temperatures in the 20's but wind chills in the teens. not as cold as yet but still really cold. oh, buddy didn't let down his gar. still quite bundled up this morning. the it is a five out of ten in weather by the numbers and the wind will make all of the difference.
7:32 am
temperatures milder, 27 degrees, but feels like 15. high of 33 with your morning snow showers and winds gusting at 30 miles an hour. 13 degrees tonight. we have a colder night tonight and arctic blast again tomorrow. we will have more details on the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. we have had a little slipping and sliding going on this morning,. >> no major crashes. fender-bender, within car spin outs we have seen early on when those first snow showers rolled through and caught everybody by surprise, but but right now as they move out we are leaving behind wet roads and partially snow covered roadways. here on the roosevelt boulevard we are dealing with the slow go northbound because of an accident right here near broad street interchange. here's a live look at the blue route for folks coming out of the mid county heading down towards the schuylkill expressway. we have one lane here because that secondary acceleration lane is snow covered. you'll fine that on the on and off ramps.
7:33 am
in other area where you change lanes you'll have a a little pile of snow. as we look live at the bypass. a crash west on the pennsy turnpike right here near valley forge, mass transit, 20 maybe delays on the paoli line. mike and alex, back over to you. i don't know what to think about this court case, connecticut supreme court rules against a teenager. the she's 17. battling cancer. she does not want to take the chemotherapy. >> the 17 year-old name is cast sandra and she was diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma in december. she did not want chemotherapy which doctors would say give her a 85 percent of survival. sandra and her mother wanted to seek alternative treatments. they missed several doctor's appointment. the state swooped in forcing her to undergo chemo. >> my daughter doesn't want to die. i don't want her to die. so people out there think that i'm a's letting her do a death sentence. i'm not. neither is she. we're saying these are her
7:34 am
rights. these are her constitutional rights that have been taken away. >> yesterday connecticut supreme court ruled state officials are not violating sandra's rights. >> wow. >> i don't know what to think bit. we have brought our attorney in heather hanson, heather, how would this work? would they physically take her out of the house and drag her to the chemotherapy. >> yes, they have her lock upright new to have her take chemotherapy. >> what do you mean lock up. >> she's in her room. she ran away. when they first gave her chemotherapy, then she ran away. so then state took over as alex said and they have her there. her mother can only visit her with other people there because they think her mother has some influence over her decision making. >> how is this not violating her rights. >> it is such a fine line. if i were to ask do you think an 11 year-old has a right to say i don't want to take an antibiotic to take an pneumonia, your opinion of it might be different. so what happens here is that
7:35 am
the court held a number of hearings to see whether or not she truly was mature and competent enough to say i don't want this chemo and why. court determined that she was not. it decided on a case by case basis. there are some states that say point blank minor can make this decision. others say a minor cannot. >> so the age has something to do with it here. when she turns 18. >> which is coming up. >> yes. >> what happens then. >> by then, it is interesting because by then the point will be mute because chemo will have been done. she has been on it for six months which also weighed in the decision because to take her off of it new when she's almost done would also have a detrimental effect. >> i'm trying to envision this happening in the chemotherapy office. they are sit down and put that in her arm. >> her mother has said at points they have had to strap her down. we don't know details of all. that we don't know exactly how it is done but it is definitely something being
7:36 am
donna begins her will because it is for her best interest. they have had doctors testify that this now gives her as you guys said an 85 percent of survival where otherwise she would have no chance. >> this ace big debate. i haven't heard about something like this. in the future will this have to be a case by case basis then. >> it so depend on the state you live in. i was in 2013 the the states around here, in pennsylvania if you are 18 or graduate from high school you get to make your own decisions. otherwise it is supposed to be parental. in new jersey it is children don't have any rights with regard to this type of thing n delaware a child has their own rights. most of these laws have to do with things like abortion and things that kids don't want their parents to know about. so this is a new area of law n virginia they passed a law called abraham's law that says the that the children half this right based on a similar case. >> are they rejecting this because of religious reasons
7:37 am
that brings up another thing n pennsylvania about a year ago a a couple is now in jail because they didn't give their kids antibiotics for religious reasons. there is so much to weigh n parental rights, religious reasons, legal things, medical things. it has to be done on a case by case basis. when you compare chemotherapy to antibiotics or say aspirin. >> we're talking about her life here 85 percent chance of survival. >> it just seems to us, you don't want to get chemotherapy but not everybody believes it. >> it is a harsh thing. >> yes. >> that is why people have trouble with it. >> we are doing it is so cold jokes. give me so. >> it is so cold lawyers have their hand in their own pockets. >> it is only okay if you do that. >> that is what i figured. >> good to see you. >> you too. we have smart phones, we have smart tv's, and how about something called the smart wardrobe, yeah.
7:38 am
smart belts. what would a smart dealt do for you you. it is national law up force amount appreciation day. we want to honor those brave men and women who keep us safe every single day. this is a tweet from kathy. she said police officer he had card, thank you guys. we thank you as well. this is from brianna, my brother matt, deputy and part-time cop, thanks for all that you do. when you send these in send them on instagram, on twitter, facebook. >> here's the key, you have to use that hash tag. use fox 29 good day. >> okay.

7:42 am
