8:01 am
karen. >> it's nice to be back. > of course we want to know what it looks like in your neighborhood. we've been asking on twitter, facebook, take a picture. upload it, use that hashtag fox 29 weekend and then we're going to share the pictures. we're going to get to caitlyn ross. good morning to you both. we have low visibilities that have actually caused some delays at the airports this morning. i've heard some arrivals and departures run to about a half hour to an hour late. if you do have a flight out this morning, make sure you call ahead april give yourself sometime on the roads. they're not that bad. it changed over to slush a few hours ago. this is the tail end of the storm moving up and down the east coast. the snow has started to exit our northwestern suburbs. right now seeing the dry air in place here in philadelphia. that's about it for the rest of day. still some snow showers in the
8:02 am
poconos. and that will be the scenario for the rest of day. gray skies stick around, a rain shower here or there, maybe a snowflake, but otherwise all the snow that has accumulated has already done so. we have storm warning until 11 1 # p.m. for bucks county and fox futurecast shows by 11:00 we see pretty quick clearing as the storm exits off to the north aprilest. wrap around rain and snow showers is likely this afternoon. we'll see the dryer air as we heads towards sunday. it's 34 in will continuing ton and 35 in dover. visibilities are lowest where we saw the snow just falling up in the mountains towards the lehigh val yes 3-mile visibility here in philadelphia, buts that i'm prompt from the past hour or so so i expect delays will be less and less and the airport as when go through today. 37-degrees the high temperature with some clouds. and into tonight we clear out.
8:03 am
we're looking at a beautiful sunday, but another storm system right on the heels of this one. first, the sat special. bob kelly joining us for a check on the roads. >> good morning, bob. >> good morning, everybody. we'll begin with some video from overnight. this is a police-involved accident in north philly. it happened at the intersection of north broad and west tioga we're getting some reports that the car hit the police vehicle and then took off. fortunately office he ever and no one else was hurt. so that is good news. as you can see the snow was falling there. good morning, everybody, let's begin with our nice little a, a, coast guard picture of the morning. this coming to us from lumberton, number, along 541. the further north and west you're waking up this morning the more white stuff you're going to see. the roads are pretty much in good shape in lumberton, new
8:04 am
jersey. good morning to the shaders, mable shade, new jersey, route 73. again, the roads are just wet, a combination of wet and slushy, the yucky slush that is going to keep shopping up from the car in front of you. here's a look atabrine marijuana, so conditions change. the salt crews have been out overnight. the one thing you want to watch is the crazy remember grade plow gays that are trying to parking lots before the guys are pushing the snow. no problems up april down route 206789 if you can delay your trip maybe an hour morning i think you're going to be in good shape. as caitlyn mentioned, there are some delays expected at the air part. there were some flights that were canceled last night. so the plane is not here this morning to take you out of town so they have to work that system
8:05 am
through with some of the bugs. the runways are clear. i do suggest you check with your airline before you put the bags into the trunk to head down to philly international. karen and lauren back over to you. thank you, of course, bob. > this morning a lot of you are waking up with snow, others just reign. either way the real deal is it's messy out there and it's shopping. we have live coverage. sabrina will be covering it, she is live in bucks county. we begin with jennifer. we are live along penn avenue here in west reading. as you can see the main street in town is appropriately plowed on the side, all of the snow piled up on the sidewalk. i'd say we probably got three to four inches in this stretch of town. if we come over here i can't even tell what the cross street is because that's obviously covered in snow. we have noticed plow trucks
8:06 am
coming out to try to clear some of these parking lots, but if we take a walk down here to the west reading diner, this lot obviously has not yet been plowed, but it hasn't stopped people coming out here to get their morning coffee and their day started with a nice breakfast. coming from philadelphia we saw the conditions dramatically change. in the city we saw a lot of slush analyte coating and the roads seemed prepped. as we got closer to reading and the 422 area we were noticing that the roads were a little more slick. as you can see the parking lot some people shoveling out, definitely a change in the system out here in reading. like i said, three to four inches. people experiencing a different morning as compared to philadelphia. we do have sabina in the bucks county area. good morning, first of all i'm from bucks county. we all know bucks county is beautiful, but especially during the winter with the roads not so
8:07 am
pretty. let's take a look. right now here we have been referring all morning long. we are headed to downtown doylestown. you can see the roads wet, slushy, some parts of them still have a little bit of a layer of snowfall you see a plow coming by. we see a lot of plows. not too many salt trucks. i do know they were out this morning pretreating the roads just a little bit. we are seeing a good amount of traffic on the roads. a lot of cars out here for a saturday morning. i wish i could say that we saw that they were kind of taking their time and easing through, but actually weir seeing a lot of people not being too careful. a lot of people passing each other. we just experienced somebody passed us and as they passed us they kicked up a bunch of slush onto our windshield. we had to make sure the wipers were working pretty fast. that's the danger.
8:08 am
you see the slush graphing into the middle of the road there. you might hit those spots especially when you're turning into a parking lot like this car is doing over here or when you're turning into some of the side roads. the main roads are okay, a little bit better than the side roads, but actually they're still pretty slushy. a thick coating of some wetness and snow on the roads. you can see the sides of the roads also pretty wet as well 6789 as you are heading out this morning, there are plow trucks. we want to make sure you guys are taking your time. there is somebody shoveling. people are out this, month. guys back to you. > sabina be careful out there. penndot crews were busy overnight treating the roads. this is cellphone video. penndot asking traveler to a void unnecessary travel. if you have to head out, make sure you give yourself plenty of time. this is what it looked like in love park just a couple of hours ago. crews are out there shoveling
8:09 am
the sidewalks, clearing a path for walkers this morning. that's always very important. > we love the conversation. let's show some of the picks terse that you've been showing. this is from pottstown. it looks like they got a good amount of snow there. this one came from allentown. could that be more beautiful. thank you for sending that one in as well. kila, snowed witness. we're waying for a plow in upper darby. boyer town, man is that a pretty. eric thanks for sending that one, five inches. norristown, bitty. keep these pictures coming because they are absolutely gorgeous for the folks that got snow and if you have any slush. it looks like the worst of this over. the timing could not have been better. have you been watching the show empire. >> no, but i'm going to watch it tonight when i'm stuck in the house. > it's amazing. it's fun, it's dish he, but they're also tacking a lot of
8:10 am
the very tough issues, get ready to share this conversation. while you are standing out in the storm. they're doing it for the kids, how their actions can make a big impact on their lives. let's hope this withinner is not going to be too long. we're getting started with this whole roller coaster. one storm after another. we're looking to winter by the rolling stones, very appropriate for today. keep sending your jut box music requests, use the hashtag fox 29 weekend.
8:13 am
welcome back, fox 29 weekend. you are taking a look at collingswood, new jersey. there are about a couple hundred power outages around the area we have to tell you about. we're going to keep checking and keep you posted on the morning, but we think everyone is in pretty good condition right now. the show empire has become an instant hit. every single week more viewers are tuning in. it's dish i, it's fun. people are still talking about the debut show with the lead character luscious leon. throws his son into a trash can because the boy dressed up into his mother's shoes and scarf. take a look.
8:14 am
(music playing). > lucas. lucas. please don't. please don't. powerful stuff. doctor chuck williams is an educational psychologist and also the director of graduate studies at lincoln university joining us this morning. good morning to you, chuck. >> thanks for having me. > i want to get to so many of the comments that people were so moved. kay ray tweets, say what you
8:15 am
want, but empire knowing its audience tacking home phobia black dynamic in prime time. this is big. >> how big is it. >> it's huge. first of all let me say empire is a nice piece of entertainment. they have some of the greatest back entertainers in hollywood. niomi campbell was on the other night so i'm really impressed by that. i think that the twitter is right, while home phobia exists in all communities tv movies.
8:17 am
so at the center of that is what doesette mean to be a blackmail is it hyper masculine, is it heterosexual. you go against that, what are the consequences of that 6789 a father who may embrace homosexual wants his young son walking around in his mother's clothes. one realistic san point, i'm speaking as a psychologist, you have to talk about what it means on the impact of their development, their ability to make friends. the reality that we all have to live to prevent bullying. it makes people uncomfortable to watch what happened in that episode and that's because this tweet came in. empire might stay on long, there's too much controversy and a the look of people can't handle. do you think that's true. >> i think it could be true. say, for example, if it looks like there's an over endorsement
8:18 am
of homosexuality you will definitely get push back and at the sent of that will be the black church. the plaque church is a hub of a lot of the homo sale ingredients that we see. i think a lot of people may be offended by that. she says let's see empire get under the surface of all the controversy. sometimes you put it out there, you get a reaction. do you bring deeper, do you bring some real change. do you bring character development that opens some eyes. >> the father was coming around as relates to his gay son. they pushed him in the background and said he was gay because of his sexuality. he wasn't allowed to perform. as of this week he seems like he's embracing his son a little bit more. he's embracing his talent. hopefully we'll see some reconciliation, some respect
8:19 am
about what it means to be gay in america, black communities not withstanding. doctor chuck thank you so much for your time. as always we appreciate it. >> thank you, karen. > certainly people have very strong core values and opinions on it. use our hashtag fox 29 weekend. now for a look at our interactive weather. we're going to take a life look outside at old city. they are outside our station at fourth and market streets. the streets are slushy. not as much ice as i expected on my way in. we saw the transition very neatly present snow to rain here in the city so you've got snow and then you've got the rain. we didn't really see anything in between. but that makes for some heavy water logged snow that you have to push of off your car or clear off the sidewalk. it's not ice it's the heavy snow that will eventually wash away due to all the snow that we saw. we got a wet, only about two to three inches of snow in malearn.
8:20 am
that's beautiful scene behind me. two to three inches out to malvern, but further west in chester county or further north and we saw amounts up to four to five inches. everything coming toen a end right now. the storm is pushed off into new england, we have some left over rain and snow showers, but they are scattered. we have wet roads all the way up to the poconos and snow covered roads all the way up to the poconos, too, but not seeing any more snow falling. all the accumulations already happened. futurecast says any left over showers will quickly exit as we go through the afternoon. on the back end, left over showers this morning. we're expecting rain shower, all the wintry weather is basically over with. rain exits offshore today. we see skies clear as we head into sunday. sunday is not bad, but the poor weather returns. by sunday night you see some snow moves in.
8:21 am
this looks to be mainly snow as a clipper runs across the delaware rally. temperatures around freezing. 35 in the city. 37 down the shore in wildwood. your 7-day forecast. 39 with sunshine tomorrow, early snow and look how cold we get next week, temperatures only in thes to. that's a look at orceins seven day forecast. it's not uncommon for people to see in line for a concert, something you'd stand in line for a licensing time, how about some parents waiting overnight bring this storm. they're not going to buy anything. first up, kelly. >> was there donuts involved in that one? i don't think so. >> i would stand in line for that. good morning, everybody a life look at the 42 freeway. the kids are not going to be
8:22 am
happy with this kind storm, it's wet and slushy. wet and slushy coming in towards philly. we do have some accidents. we do have some speed restrictions on some of the area stress. here's a look at 422. 25 miles an hour across all of the area bridges and that's where we're going to see some of the slippery spots, on the bridges, on the overpasses. there is an accident north on the new jersey turnpike, right near exit 7. and a 25-mile speed restriction up and down the new jersey turnpike. can you hear this, the 7/eleven by bee answer say. keep those pictures coming. we know you're having fun with us. i don't think that viewer saw the daylight outside. that's a lot of fun. and that beautiful scene there.
8:23 am
8:26 am
> good morning, we are out here in doylestown, bucks county taking a look at the roads. we pulled off to one of these smaller neighborhoods to see how they're doing and the good news is the plows are out. you can see that plow moving that snow just a little bit out of the way so he can clear that corner there. we are seeing some traffic out here. you can still see it's pretty early out so people just waking up this morning. the roads they're salted. they're clearer than they were earlier, but you can still see they're slushy, they're wet. they're slick. you want to take your time if you are getting out there on the roads. you see that slush still kind of piling up in the middle of the road there. that's what you want to be careful of when you're going lieu the roads. take your time. take it easy. we are seeing some of these roadways are salted, but these neighborhood roads are always a problem you're going to have to dig your driveway out if you live in upper bucks or one of the areas that got a lot of
8:27 am
snow. we are live in bucks county. people still waking up, but the roads not too good. guys, thank you sabina. thank you for continuing to send in your pictures. linda sent this one, her grill, it's covered. no going out today. in linwood, we got two sentence and the streets are already plowed with lots of slush. my apartment complex, northeast philadelphia, that brings pretty, stay inside if you can. 8:25 is the time right now. let's take a look at our headlines. military officials say two marines were killed when their helicopter crashed during an exercise size in southern california. it happened late afternoon at the base in 29 palms. the cause of that crash is under investigation. a the look of parents spent the night brave that storm outside because they are desperately hoping to get their children enrolled into a charter school in bensalem will begin at 9:00 this morning, so in just half an

8:31 am
> welcome back, our big story. of course it is the weather. we're taking a life look outside right now. it looks a little bit foggy with the snow that might be melting with the warm temperatures. caitlyn, the fog is causing the most problems out there this morning if you can believe it. we have a lot of low lying coverage. call ahead for sure.
8:32 am
a lot of delays on both arrivals and departures. one of our viewers wanting to show the weather from williamstown, new jersey. not much snow on the ground there. it looks lining a lot like the city. we transitioned to all rain here in philadelphia at some point during the overnight hours. here's what left, ultimate doppler showing some light rain and snow showers moving through the area. we have a lot of snow covered areas. bob kelly is coming up and he'll give you a report of the areas that you want to avoid. as far as precipitation falling, it's come to an end. flurries linger in the poconos. winter storm warnings still in effect for the poke most, lehigh valley, upper bucks and montgomery county until 11 a. that's going to expire in an hour or two. we got a hefty three to five, close to six inches north and west. fox futurecast shows the end of the storm as we move through the day. we have a lot of clouds, some
8:33 am
wet slushy roads. it is water logged at this point. kind of hard to brush off your car. by 2:00 left over rain showers as this storm exits, but it does look like just rain and then into tonight we'll see skies clear. temperatures are still t at freezing or blow towards our north. but the precipitation ended. not really worried about anything refreezing throughout today because temperatures are at 35 in philadelphia they'll continue to rice a degree or two. two mile visibility here in philadelphia. we've got some heavy clouds out there so that is going to cause some delays on some of the roadways, too. just be careful. your fox 37 for today and then into tonight 30-degrees with those skies clearing out. we'll have much more on the weekend ahead, but plus more snow by monday. first let's check in with bob. where are the trouble spots. >> chris o'connell last night at around 11:00 he sent us this dash cam video on his way home from work, this was a spin out
8:34 am
crash on i95 between packer avenue and the stadium exit right after about 11:00 last night. he says this was one of four accidents that he witnessed last night. at 11:00 last night i came into philly and landed about 9, 9:30 or so and right before the snow started to fall. the road conditions were slick. right now let's go outside and take a life look at some of the jamb cams. here's a look at the zucaro kill expressway. kids are not going to be happy with this because the snow is quickly melting away. mom and dad, if you're heading out the front door, the roads are wet, it's slushy. where we're going to see the problem spots are the on and off ramps. you're coming 60 miles an hour and you hit the on ramp p and you hit the curb. the bridges and the overpass, that slush is slippery much here's the life look at i95, all the major roadways, they did a good job, especially after last
8:35 am
weekend, there was no chances being taken for this storm. they put down the brian. they've been out there with the salt all morning. delaware, where is the snow. >> there's not even a snow on the grass. so depending on where you begin your trip this morning, where you're waking up, you could see some white stuff. lumberton, new jersey, we got some snow on the grass, but again the roads are wet. mass transit, septa's warminster line running with some delays this morning. all of the bridges have speed restrictions, like the been franklin, if you're heading up and down the new jersey turnpike, 35-mile an hour speed restriction. an accident just past exit 7. if you are heading to the airport, here's the deal, expect delays. some flights were canceled last night. so therefore the plane is not in philadelphia to pick you up and take you to to your destination. so there's some shuffling around that the airlines have to do. i would definitely check with the airlines before you head down to the airport.
8:36 am
> lauren, back over to you. >> as caitlyn mentioned, some of you waking up with rain, some of you do have some snow on the ground. >> we have the fog out there which is a problem. we have jenny in but, county, what is the scene like where you are. >> good morning, lauren and karen, it is still flurrying out here in west reading life outside the west reading diner much as you take a look at the ground, you can see that this parking lot has not been plowed, but it hasn't stopped people from coming out here for a nice saturday morning breakfast. as you can see the main road here is pretty clear. we did talk to people across the street. account ally you can see that man shoveling right now. we talked to a woman who says she owns that stretch of property so she was out here making sure that the sidewalks were clear for people coming out here on a saturday morning and a salon down the way we actually saw a wedding party walking in there on this snowy, messy morning. we got to get all the sidewalks opened up and the parking lot.
8:37 am
a big wedding party today and saturdays are always the biggest day. we want to get the sidewalks clean. once the temperature gets warm people will come out and enjoy the nice day. >> are you going to be on the roads this morning or today. >> no, not if i can help it. > why is that. >> they don't look too good this morning. it's pretty slippery and the bus was sliding around this morning. i'd rather use public transportation than risk cracking my car up. > he says these roads are not so nice and as you can see we're trying to figure out exactly how much snow fell in this area based on that car. >> i would guess four inches or so. obviously caitlyn ross has those specific totals. > that does look like about four to five inches. >> it's chilly outside. this one is for brian, shout by tiers for fears. we love hearing from you. here we go. use that hashtag, fox 29 weekend skippy!!

> welcome back, everyone. on this snow covered saturday morning for so many of you. there's a life look outside our old city. the snow was covered by a coating of rain. so it's that water logged slushy type of snow on the road. we have plenty of advanced notice for this event. the road crews were out all night treating and were pretty much okay. all that being said, still very wet. be careful out there. snow totals from the overnight they are highest where it snowed the longest and that's where it's the coldest in the higher elevation of philly high valley, ma. allentown and perc can i five and a half. king of prussia 2.7 and that's kind of what we saw around the
8:47 am
immediate suburbs. one to three. here's our exiting storm system right now it's pushing rain and snow into parts of new england, but it is winding down for us. some leftover rain showers across south jersey. the rest of the day is pretty gray. we'll still see some left over showers as we go through the afternoon. all of the moisture is offshore. we'll see some quick clearing and that will give way to a sunny day. we start to see some snow moving in from the west. this is a very different system from the nor easer that brought us the rain and snow overnight. this has canadian origins, it is clipper system that is much colder. mainly just snow into the area. 8:00 a.m. monday morning, snow covered roads maybe an inch or two by the time the snow begins. you know that is going to be
8:48 am
problematic. that's monday morning. 34 in l aen town. we're quickly rising above freezing. not worried about any refreezing on the roads. 35 in dover. every degree is critical when you're in the 30s obviously. scattered showers 38-degrees today, sunshine for tomorrow and then that early snow monday could cause some headaches. look at those temperatures. we're back in the deep freeze, 27 on monday, 28 on tuesday. it stays active through the rest of the week. here we are, winter, it took a while to begin, but there's our next chance for some snow on thursday. we're starting to ramp things up here. bob kelly. a life look, caitlyn, i'm sorry. thank you. we're going to be talking to christine from septa. i know a lot of folks getting ready to step out the front door. maybe they're not so sure about driving so they're going to use mass transit. chris that from septa, good morning. >> how are you? > we're looking live at city line avenue just off of belmont eva. can you give us an idea of how
8:49 am
the septa buses are navigating through the buses this morning. >> september that buses are doing pretty well. we have a few routes that are detoured due to weather-related conditions and those routes are the 58, the 99 and the 14. > what about the platforms on obviously the regional rails, the market frankfurt line, the broad street subway, i can only assume that you guys were out there salting and plowing or shoveling. it's a heavy snow to shovel. >> yes, conditions out there are slippery, so we decongestant to make sure that folks take their time and allow for extra time when they're getting off and on our vehicles and also want to put this out there that we have some delays on our warminster, west trenton and airport lines on regional rail and that's due to signal problems. there was a water main break near the allegheny avenue station of the broad street subway, is that still impacting commuters this morning?
8:50 am
>> yes, it is. i was just about to mention that. that is on the southbound side. we have a lot of water there on the platform at alleghany station. so trains are bypassing alleghany station. > thank you so much for joining us. as a septa bus rolls up in front of our studio here. cut the drivers and the train engineers a break this morning. be careful on the platforms as chris that mentioned. there's our septa bus pulling up at fourth and market. look at that vehicle. get all the snow off the car before you pull out of the driveway there, not just the windshield, but also clear the snow off the hood and the roof of the vehicle because all that slushy snow is eventually just going to wind up back onto the roadways that everyone has done a great job of putting down the salt and trying to keep clear this morning. > it's so good to have you you here to keep us safe on the streets. of course keep sending us your pictures, we keep continuing to
8:51 am
look at them. this is from our facebook page because we like to get your pictures wherever they are. this is from hugh, thank you sent so much for sending this in. kids love snow no matter how small. >> that's true. look at this one with the booty disclosure and the little reflective jacket. keep our pictures coming. use your hashtag, fox 29 weekend. it's messy outside, but it's nice indoors so you can stay tuned to our show here at fox 29 weekend. also, maxwell requested by angie, she's home sick with the flu. we hope you feel better, but you're not missing anything outside.

8:55 am
8:56 am
