tv Fox29 Weekend FOX February 1, 2015 8:00am-9:01am EST
8:00 am
. this morning, need a lyft? there's a new car service in philadelphia and is it legal and how does it stack up against uber? plus, it's a marathon not a sprint. the chances are you probably have maybe a drink or two on this super bowl sunday. the beers you'll want to stick to so you're not sloshed for the big game. thank you so much for waking up early for us for fox 29 weekend. it is a sunday, february 21, 2015, i'm karen hepp.
8:01 am
>> and i'm caitlin ross. >> we have a lot to get to. >> we also have the very latest on bobbi kristina brown found in a bathtub yesterday. take a outside and see what it's like. it's a little gray, sort of looks like snow-rain. but first i've got t weather question for you. >> what's the going to be like? >> thank you guys so many for sending in that video. i want to know is monday going to be another snow day. we've been talking about a storm coming in. you can send your questions through twitter, facebook. we do have a storm coming in but
8:02 am
doubt it brings a snow day in the philadelphia area. out ahead of the main storm we are seeing some flurries outside right now. these snow showers moving into chester county, even into parts of delaware. so there will be a preview throughout the day, flurries flying and isolated snow showers. the storm comes in tonight and lasts through monday. a winter weather advisory further southward where we're not talking about snow accumulation in the city or south jersey, but when that storm comes in, we expect that icy mix to form before it changes to rain. the good news it should happen overnight. but plan on a slow commute for monday morning. temperatures in the 20s right now. it's cold but not nearly as cold as yesterday. 27 in philadelphia, winds are calm and with some of that slightly warmer air moving in, that wind machine has also shut off so we haven't been seeing
8:03 am
the harsh wind chills. here's your fox cast for today. throughout the afternoon, we don't have any weather problems. it's cloudy, we could have an isolated snow shower, but the real rain and snow does not move into later tonight. we're talking closer to midnight. and it will be messy changing to rain for monday morning. all the latest on the timing and the snowfall amount ahead. >> at 8:03, let's get to some of our news this morning. one person is dead after an accident in lawncrest. there was a car that slammed into a tree. on the boulevard, the cause of that crash is under investigation. right now investigators are trying to figure out what started a strip mall fire overnight in new jersey. firefighters were called out to this scene at the 2300 block in spruce street in ewing township. it started inside a liquor store
8:04 am
and spread to the deli next store. in philadelphia, crews spent the night fixing two broken water mains. east gerard and east montgomery avenue. and in center city overnight the water department had to dispute down penn street from arch to fill bert. the street just reopened a number of minutes ago. and at 8:04 investigators in mount holly new jersey spent the night looking for clues after two people were found dead inside of their home. sabina? >> reporter: karen, the burlington county prosecutor's office is handling this investigation and we don't have a lot of information right now. but here is what we do know. a man and a woman were killed inside their home along the 200 block of washington street. it's actually not too far from the police station. in fact it's just up the road from where we're standing.
8:05 am
and the bodies of two adults were found by a third person who lives in the house with the victim. that person called police just after 9:00 yesterday morning after apparently coming home and making the grusome discovery. police are not saying exactly how the man and the woman were killed or how long they were dead, and they haven't arrested anyone. but authorities say the community is not at risk. published reports indicate the victims were relatives and a neighbor's daughter tells us the male victim was rushed out of the home and he was placed in an ambulance with handcuffs on. but authorities are not confirming that. the prosecutor's office is expected to release more information today. back here live we're at mount holly's police station. we will bring you the latest details when they're released to us. back to you. this morning's cover story, this is a story that had so many of us talking this past week. a woman from lower marion
8:06 am
questioning police were racially pro filing two african-american men she had hired to shovel her snow. she took this picture as police had these two young 350e78, she shaut they were teenagers, sit in the snow. she hired them to clear her driveway. both workers were african-american. >> we saw the police pull up and sit them down and start asking them questions. i had seen the exact same thing a couple of streets up. so i thought twice in one day and i was wondering what was going o i have friends who have children of color who also have issues with their kids being stopped. >> police in lower marion say they did stop two groups of men shoveling driveways, they were all african-american between the ages of 18 to 40. it turns out they were adults and the township has an
8:07 am
ordinance that prohibits adults from soliciting door to door if they don't have a permit. police say they were trying to enforce that rule and were not racially pro filing these men. we're going to bring in a profession sor of sociology and the chair of sociology justice department. thanks for joining us. what does this look like to you? what do you think happened in this case? >> i think it adds a new dimension. there's now an expression of shoveling while black. technically the police officers were correct, that these men were in violation of an ordinance of soliciting door to door if you're an adult. but police officers have an enormous amount of discretion and one has to wonder would they treat white men that were looking to treat a little extra money shoveling the same way. and i really think what might -- i can't know the intent of the officers, but the officers drive
8:08 am
by a few times, they see they're not kids, they're adults. they were within their legal right to stop them. i think that perhaps what might have happened is that maybe the police went on a fishing expedition. that is you pull over or you stop black men, and you know for the most part they're probably not from lower marion. these men were two blocks in from the city line, us-1, the other side of which is predominantly black, the lower marion side which is predominantly white. they probably figured these guys were not from the neighborhood and so they say do you have a permit. of course they do not. so what they do is they run their names. and they go on a fishing expedition. they use the violation of the ordinance as a pretext to stop them. and see if they have any outstanding warrants. >> certainly some people did feel that way on facebook. because that resident that we
8:09 am
heard from, she posted on facebook with that picture and we got so many comments on what happened there. i don't see what the big deal is, cops were making the neighborhood safe just in case. anyone defending the cops plain and silver is an idiot. stopping anyone for shoveling snow, really? do you think that was a component of what was happening here? >> i think the first comment is telling. and they're just making the neighborhood safe. safe from what? black people walking through the neighborhood? just because you're brown or black doesn't mean a police officer has the right to stop you. >> thank you for yoor time and we appreciate your insight on this matter. many think we have a long way to come when we deal with racial issues in our communities. >> my pleasure being here. thank you. >> what do you think what happened in this case? you can let us know, use our
8:10 am
hashtag #fox29weekend. >> it's a super bowl sunday, you know that. you've got the pats and the seahawks on your mind. what else can you bet on? there's a new car service in town. what can lyft that a cab or uber can't? >> hope birthday tech tank and i think we did a lot to change technology in automobiles. we have shredder, a printer, key boards, computers. i think we've done well. but the cars of the future are now here. let's check out some of the technology you can buy. so we have a yukon denali here
8:11 am
we're going to show you some of the best. lots of other cars have this now. one of the neat features about this car is a media center. you can do everything, watch blu-ray movies, everything that you need. if you don't want to bother mom and dad you pop on these headphones and what you're listening back here is different than the zone up there. the other great thing is the way fii and connections and internet. when you have desizes and kids in the back you want to get them on the internight, too. let's get them the wi-fi setting. they're on the internet and playing with their devices. now, we all charge and plug in. guess what? i don't want to do that. i want to take my phone and plop it right there. a wireless charging station. sntd that nice? you want to talk about the latest technology in cars, just

isi sismt extremists. >> and whitney houston's daughter bobbi kristina kristina brown is in a medically induced coma this morning. investigators are still trying to piece together what exactly happened. according to police brown was home with her husband and three others when she was found. >> we don't know if there was a medical condition where she had a problem in the tub or if it was any type of self-initiated or overdose-type of situation. >> police say the similarities in this case are not lost on investigators. whitney houston died in her bathtub in 2012. and hundreds of you commented about this on our facebook page. jennifer wrote, i pray she lives through this and that someone will minister life, wholeness
8:16 am
and healing to her. god bless her. >> if you're looking to get around the city, taxicabs are no longer your only option. we've gotten so much more competition. you've probably heard of uber before, now there's another ride sharing service. it's called lyft. it just launched in philadelphia on friday. they don't just carry passengers, they also carry controversy. what's the difference between the two? good morning to you. >> thanks for having me. >> a lot of people are pretty excited. it's always nice to have more options. let's just start with the controversy. what's the problem with having these new services in philadelphia? >> so, they're not exactly legal but they're not exactly illegal either. there really isn't a regulatory agency that covers ride sharing in pennsylvania. so the ppa which regulation taxis have been regulated them in philadelphia so they're
8:17 am
saying they're an illegal hack cab service and they will impound anyone who is driving these share services and they have before. they've impounded uber cars and fined them $2,000 a piece. >> let's look at some of the lyft cars because they're fun to look at. they're attention getting, they have that distinctive pink moustaches and now they have cool reflective moustaches. >> they've always had these huge pink moustaches, now they're kind of toning that down a little bit and putting them on their dashboards but you know you're getting into a lyft car. the point is that it's kind of like your friend with a ride. so they're a little more fun to be in. it's less like a taxi and more like somebody you know. you're encouraged to sit in the front seat, drivers give you a
8:18 am
fifth bump when you get in. it's more a casual experience than you might experience with a cab or uber. >> what's the difference with lyft or uber. what am i going to get if i call an uber service? >> if you call an uber service, you're essentially going to get a cab. it's much more professional. a lot of them are converted cab drivers. whereas lyft is a little bit more out there. it's kind of like your friend with a car. >> let's get to some of the comments on this one. kudos to lyft for rolling out in philadelphia despite opposition from the ppa and we get this one, uber and lyft surge prices have me feeling stuck. i'll walk before i pay that fair. and it certainly seems they may be here to stay because they're willing to be impounded and to test some of the laws here and
8:19 am
we had some of the council members would like to have these services be officially legal here in philadelphia. >> a lot of public officials, including mayor nutter, have come forward saying they support the presence here in philadelphia but the ppa is about 60% run by the state and those officials are just saying that they are going to contend that it's illegal, even though it's legal currently in the state of the rest of pennsylvania. >> all right. super bowl sunday, you're going to a friend's house, how are you calling? >> i think i'm going to call lyft. i appreciate the social aspect and would like to try something new. >> thanks so much. >> thanks for having me. >> let us know what you think about the controversy with these new ride sharing services. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> so a mall mart greeter reprimanded for saying have a blefd day. that's just part of the story. what happens next that left him completely stunned. karen? >> we're looking at some of your
8:20 am
tweets that are coming in. this one from our viewer this morning. this one made us chuckle. read the bible before watching fox 29, watching dr. stanley right now. this is the comment from miky. always a great show, we want to wish our son a happy 15th birth za and comments on our story about the snow shoveling. are we now at a point where a police officer cannot stop a man of color? what do you think? >> this is golden by jill scott. don't forget to send in your song requests all morning long. just use the hashtag #fox29weekend.
8:21 am
>> do you know the difference between this shaving cream and this shaving cream? same ingredients, same manufacturer, except the women's version cost 10% more than the men's version. why? let's call it the gender tax. women on average pay more than 1,300 bucks ary for, well, being a woman. everyday items, razor blades, soaps, deodorants. female versions cost more. this blouse, $3.95 on average, $2.06. women were quoted a sales pry higher for a new car than a man. and fellows you're not off the hook. $15,000 more over our lifetime that we're going to pay on car insurance versus a woman's car insurance. so here's a few tips to help level the playing field and save
8:22 am
you a few bucks. set your vanity aside. use the men's version of those beauty products. second, ask for unisex pricing from the hairdresser and dry cleaner and check out kelly blue book before you step into the showroom. so in a world where men and women are more equal than ever, it just doesn't make any sense to pay more money for product with the exact same ingredients. i'm confused. i'm cashing out.
8:25 am
welcome back. this one man, his job description is to greet people when they're coming in the doors. the amount of tension he's receiving after getting a reprimand at work is pretty overwhelming. listen to this. as part of his hello, philip tells them to have a blefd day. one customer complained about the greeting and a manager told james that he has to stop saying it. even though walmart cooperate later reversed the decision, the support for phillips continues to spread. >> i wasn't look fog that kind of response. >> people have seen that and they think of you as a hero. >> well, i don't think of myself as a hero. i'm just a person.
8:26 am
someone would say -- if you say anything good in me it's the lord in me. >> the family saying they plan to sell have a blessed day t-shirts with the proceeds going to charity. >> beverly writes in, i hope he continues to have blessed days, there will always be miserable people. >> seriously i'm of no religious affiliation. if someone saying that to me, i say thanks same to you. no big deal. >> are you going to any super bowl parties? >> i do like a little bit of day drinking and slash early night drinking. >> that's the total fun of it. >> the thing uh-uh don't want to be totally wasted an miss the whole game. so we do have some recommendations. some of the best beers that you may want to dry that you can go all day long and still be able to not have beer goggles during the game.
8:27 am
>> very important. we'll let you know about the beer coming up. >> and also take a look at some of our pictures coming in. this is back in the day. this is jordin sparks. did you know eight years ago she was the national anthem singer. is that you? >> same place, glendale, arizona. so we also got this tweet i was asking people with that picture what are you making for the big game and we have one of our viewers saying i'm making trishia yearwood's crock pot mak and cheese. it's so easy. we mention all of that because of the song we are listening is the person who's going to be singing the national anthem tonight. >> idina menzel.

8:31 am
where he is, please call police. we do expect some weather today, whether it be rain drops or flurries. first we have this weather question, caitlin ross. let's take a listen. >> we would like to know if the weather will cooperate us this weekend. thanks. >> just a bunch of girls. a lot of things planned. i understand, you don't want anything to come into the way of your weekend plans. and the weather you certainly don't want to stop you. maybe you're doing super bowl parties yourselves. it doesn't look like you have any problems today. we had the brutal cold yesterday. here it is. check out this huge storm. snow stretching from omaha, indianapolis, ohio, all the rain south of it. this is a big one. it is moving eastward and starting to spin some snow showers into pennsylvania. in fact some of those flurries showing up on radar in our western suburbs.
8:32 am
if you're in lancaster, it looks like we've got some rogue snow showers ahead of the main event. a lot of clouds out there. it's chilly but not as cold and yesterday. you're dry, your fine as you're driving to your super bowl parties. by 5:00 this evening there's some snow moving in north and west. maybe some slippery roads as you're ring towards your parties. there's 7:00, look at that snow going through the lehigh valley. it doesn't pick up or fill in until later tonight. if you are planning on staying forthe super bowl, check out midnight. snow across the philadelphia area and points north and west and then we've got rain points south and east. in between is that icy mix. even though it might be broef, it could cause some problems. during the overnight hours, rain moves in, the warmer air pushing the rain in will change over from south to north as we head towards the morning commute. by the morning commute it's just
8:33 am
rain. we do have possible concern for icy roadways north and west and by mid afternoon the system exits. even though the bulk of the rain will move out, probably snow showers as we go through monday. as far as snowfall amounts not looking at much along 95. it is mainly rain and wash away any brief snow. 1202 inches north and west of 95. lehigh valley 5 to 8 and that 8 was more up in the poconos. seven-day forecast, 37 today with a snow shower, medicationy mix. just be careful. arctic cold returns on tuesday and we get it in waves. it's dry but chilly for the rest of the week. >> of course on the super bowl sunday, many of you will be having maybe a beer or two. in fact, for a lot of folks today, it may be all about drinking, you start in the
8:34 am
morning, you day drink and go through the night. so if you watch all the commercials it's about big beer. all those anheuser-busch beers. but john tweets before you praise budweiser, ask yourself this. will it have any influence on your choice of a beer to drink. and there's this one. do not buy anything you see in a super bowl commercial. except maybe beer but not because you saw a dog or a horse. what should we be drinking? our beer expert also known as joe six pack joining us by skype. good morning. >> good morning. >> we're all thinking about this. beer is one of my most favorite things in the whole world. what do you recommend if we're going to have a day of festivities? >> super bowl sunday is a beer drinking day, and it goes on 10, 12 hours. you want to have a beer that's going to be lower in alcohol for the most part but something that
8:35 am
goes well with food. that's a big important thing for me. something you can eat and enjoy the good suds. so i tund to lean towards lower alcohol beers. there's a bunch out there right now, session beers. i've got one here called session ale. it's a belgian style goes really well with food. a little bit of a peppery bite. there's plenty of other ones out there. locally, one of the favorites in the area. and for hop heads you're going to look like a session ipa. >> what's the difference, a lot of people love the taste of an ipa but you can't drink more than two of them. what's the alcohol content in the founders ipa one? >> the founders ipa, 4.7%
8:36 am
alcohol. so it's under 5%. it's lower than budweiser. >> how about, we love beers of course from our area. how about beers from our parts of the country. they make great beer up there in the boston area, all the sam adams beers, maybe seattle area? >> it's true and a lot of fans will want to have a beer for their favorite team. so i'm recommending if you're a new england fan, you're probably going to reach for something from sam adams. the really great one that goes really well with food right now is called cold snap. it's sort of a wheat beer with a little bit of spice added to it. if you're a seattle fan, you'll be talking about the big ipa's from the pacific northwest. however, i have one other suggested beer which you just can't miss which is called beast
8:37 am
mode. you've got to love it. it's a big porter and it goes really well with food. it is definitely higher in alcohol, though. just like you would expect from the beast mode. >> all right. what are you serving at your house? >> lots of good beer but we're going to be doing meat balls and pasta. >> who do you want to win the game? >> katy perry. >> all right. thank you so much, john. or joe six pack. he mentioned food. what are you cooking at your house? what are you bringing over if you're going to a party. use our hashtag #fox29weekend and tell us what you are cooking up for the big game. >> all right, thanks karen. we're all hungry and thirsty now. a cat makes headlines when he made a miraculous escape if the grave. now he's at the center of a

8:41 am
a florida cat who made headlines after his miraculous escape from the grave is now at the center of another controversy. >> the human society says it is not going to be returning that cat to his owner. they have been caring for him. a lot of people have questions about the story including the humane society whether the cat owners believed he was really dead when they had him buried. they pointed to video up loaded to youtube and facebook that allegedly had comments from saying bart was still moving. >> it was very neglectful. we just are not going to return the cat to him. there was a woman that clearly said, i think it's still up on their site, that cat isn't dead. >> well, she now says that she didn't say that or she's taking
8:42 am
back those statements. the cat was buried saying he might have been mistaken for now. bart is still being cared for by the humane society. >> it's time for this week's look at the silly things scientists are studying. super bowl weekend. one team is about to take it all. but when they hold up that championship trophy, why will fans be crying in the stands? tears are joy are nothing new, but scientists believe it's time to figure out the reason why. researchers from yale spent some time looking into it. their psychologists say crying when you're happy or laughing when you're angry actually helps your brain. our dr. mike explains why. >> have you ever seen grown men cry with joy that their team won? the reason is the brain is
8:43 am
trying to preserve emotional equilibrium. the so when you see your favorite team winning, it actually may bring tears to your eyes. not only to preserve that equilibrium, but it's also to make it more significant and tearing up will make you remember that memorable event. >> so, it sounds like a silly thing to study, but all those tears of

welcome back. our sue serio is up just tweeting. there is time to check out the tricky forecast. >> thank you for watching. she knows she'll be busy tomorrow morning. there's a live view of the airport right now. no delays being reported but as this storm moves in, you may some see delays, especially from the fog and low clouds early tomorrow morning as we see rain in philadelphia. here is our storm system, it is large, moving across the country bringing snow and a lot of it. even some snow showers out ahead of the main event reaching our western suburbs. that's the story today. it's mainly dry, there can be flurries, snow to our north early this afternoon. a winter weather advisory the further south and east you go
8:47 am
for the snow-ice mix before changing to all rain. a mainly dry sunday but by mid afternoon there's some snow showers towards our north. they could easily coat the roadways. the further north you go, the better chance of seeing snow-covered roads. into the overnight hours, the brain comes in and that rain area will overtake the snow area gradually towards the morning commute. most of us see just rain as you wake up tomorrow, but it is coming off a slippery start to the storm. rainfall amounts, mainly rain in philadelphia, an inch or 2 just west of 95. the amounts climb the further north and west you go. up to 5 to 8 for lehigh valley to the poconos. a messy mix tomorrow, groundhog day, 43 degrees. we clear out and turn cold by tuesday. another chance for shurs on wednesday. really cold during the week and we'll keep you up to date with the snow at 6:00 and 10:00.
8:48 am
>> at 8:47 a judge puts the sale of revel on hold. revel now has until tuesday to respond to a bid and delay the more than $95 million sale. the developer would like to buy it without any obligations to any companies that had leases. his polo north country club was the first to bed on the revel which cost $2.4 billion to build and of course closed in september after a little more than two years and never, ever turned a profit. there's a family in missouri crediting a bus driver for their saving of their home. tammy riter was driving down a home when she saw a dog house in flames. that's when the bus driver stopped, ran over to help the dog that had a light bulb inside the house. and she thinks maybe that's what caused it to go up in flames.
