>> ♪ >> your news, your neighborhoods, live and interactive. this is fox 29 weekends. >> good sunday morning. it is february 22nd. we had that big storm of course overnight. we have that system that's that's moving outer. i'm karen hepp in the studio. >> reporter: i'm bill henderson on market street. >> we have a lot to discuss this morning. did you hear about what happened with one of the biggest computers in all of nascar? busch right now is out for the big date tone at a 500 today. we're speaking with a mother about heroin addiction. this mother says there's one thing you can do today, one thing that can really help your children's lives and prevent them from getting involved with drugs if that is what happened.

but first let's get outside to bill anderson right now. bill, how are the sidewalks out there? >> reporter: they're rough, karen. i have to start off by making a little bit of a joke. i'm sure -- i promised i would never be the guy standing outside telling people it's cold but it is in fact cold it's pretty dangerous to just walk. as you sit here, you can see people behind me who are struggling along the sidewalks. in the time i've been standing out here, i'm trying to get you a better shot you have been seeing people who are choosing to walk in the street as opposed to dealing with walking on the sidewalks and you can kind of see that happening here going out into the streets. so, basically the message is, folks be careful. if it looks wet it's probably ice. that applies to the cars but a lot more actually to walking. >> thank you. bill, is that guy behind you

walking across the street, how is that person doing over there? >> reporter: you see, that's exactly what i was talking about. like there are people who are doing it and kind of inching themselves along the road as i'm positioning to kind of sunday selfie stick shout-out and that's what we've been seeing periodically as people struggle. i saw one person stumble and almost go down. be careful, folks. >> good advice. thank you so much. come back inside right now. also we have a lost big events that are happening today. it is the big chinese new year parade. that's going to be about the noon hour today. caitlin what are we expecting. >> improving conditions although it doesn't really look like it as we stake a live view of center city right now. still low clouds reign in some spots, even freezing rain in some southeastern counties but that mess will move out. in the meantime if you haven't shoveled this morning you're going to be welcomed with that wet heavy snow. it's now waterlogged thanks to the rain that came through and sidewalks and roads are an icy slushy mess. temperatures not that cold.

we'll rise above freezing. before we get there be careful. highest amounts lower macungie in the lehigh valley 7.2, bordentown 6.6, drexel hill 6.25 and southampton bucks county foy pint five. 4.8 at the philadelphia international airport. it was coming down heavily in the afternoon. 4.4 in wynnewood, vineland less. same can be said for delaware in south jersey where they changed to rain pretty quickly. 2.1-inchs in dover just an inch for atlantic city. here's our system right now, it's on its way out. everyone has changed over to rain after the snow and then the sleet we saw throughout the afternoon and evening hours yesterday. the hint of still a little bit of freezing rain in portions of camden county and burlington county but that will all change over as we count to see this transition. in all of the shore points rain through most the day. clouds here but they'll clear out. winter storm warning expiring at 9:00 a.m. but good reminder it's still treacherous in

spots as the freezing rain advisory also about to expire. so, we're at the tail end of this system. fox futurecast shows the rain moving out by noon. clouds clearing. all of the philadelphia area down the shore they'll probably hang around for much of the day. sunshine even breaks out. it's not a bad afternoon and temperatures should warm into the 40's. ly look at this right now. upper 20's to 34 in philadelphia, so we're above freezing but it's still going to take awhile before those icy patches melt away. it is wet, it is icy, it is slushy, it is a mess outside. however, 24 hour temperature change, that's a testament to the warmer air that came through yesterday and look at that, 30 degrees warmer down in parts of south jersey. so, 40 degrees will be the high temperature today. it's not a nice start but we'll improve hour by hour. 26 degrees overnight tonight, mostly cloudy. what did i say yesterday? if it's not the snow it's the cold and the snow has moved out but the cold returns for tomorrow. we'll show that seven-day forecast ahead. >> thank you caitlin.

slush and ice. so messy. look at us, we're taking a turn right now v to make eight really wide turn and be careful on these streets. how did you guys do coming in to work this morning? >> it was treacherous in the neighborhood. once you got main streets, it was okay. but a lot of stuff as it looked wet like i said before, it was ice. >> i thought i was going to fall on my tush coming out the door. >> reporter: we're trying to get to the highway, get out the drive way, get that icy slushy mess off of your cars. when these guys come out they're going have to pick at that snow and the ice on their cars. you know, philly streets already putting out an advisory telling people to stay indoors, delay going out if you can. so, hey, we're out here, we're checking the roads out for you, you guys stay inside and just keep watching us. back to you guys. >> thank you. if you have plans to head out you're so wise to say i need a vacation call first before you head over to the airport. it almost looks like it's foggy there at philadelphia international airport. we know that there are some delays there or even

cancellations. please check with your airline first and these days you also get text alerts but you can always call their phone number 1-800-phl-gate as well. >> taking a look at what's trending today as we starter the day, the daytona 500 is today and actually one big name driver won't be there, most of the people who are sports fans are familiar with kurt busch. he's been suspended indefinitely by nascar. he's accused of smashing his girlfriend's head into the wall. now, he tried to appeal his indefinite suspension. a judge looked into it. a judge refused to overturn that suspension. so, he remains suspended and that actually has a connection to this area because it allegedly happened in dover delaware. that's where the judge looked into it and what have you. in a bizarre kind of twist to this, kurt busch once accused a woman of being a trained assassin. so, he won't be driving but today the daytona 500 will take place. it actually airs at noon here

on fox 29. >> also one of you was tweeting to me and said karen you used the word computers when you should use the word drivers. there are so many buschs involved with racing also kyle busch he broke his leg and his foot in a crash. he's not going to be in the big race today as well so we've got both kyle and curt who are out. we got a lot of tweets on social media. this from dillon the fact that people find it so easy to dismiss the victim explains why organizations must be aggressive in incidents like this. here's another tweet. nascar suspending kurt busch puts a lot of power in an accuser's hands. we want you to let us know was think about this situation. >> we were talking about that upstairs. to suspend somebody with thus far no charges so we'll see thousand plays out. in breaking news folks there was a ferry that capsized in bangladesh scary

could be the phone call i'm dreading i never know. my eyes fill with tears, my palms are sweating and my heart is racing. has she been arrested again? does she need a lawyer? was she attacked again? how bad this time? did she od? is she dead? how will we pay for a funeral. >> it's a powerful and the bucks county district attorney is hoping this can save lives. right now we're joined by maggie, that mother. this is the mom and producer of that video. what's the reaction been so far for people who have seen your video? >> i have nothing but positive support from family, friends, strangers, fakesy facebook, just everybody reaching out to say thank you. >> why are you telling the story? >> i think the main reason to tell the story is to just to let people know that they should educate themselves,

talk to their kids, you know, let them know what the dangers are out there and what can happen if you get involved with these drugs. i want people to question everything, what their doctors prescribe, what their kids are doing, just to get a message out just to say, you know, talk to your kids. >> you say that your daughter was 21, two parent home, always did fine in school and it was a pain killer after a toothache that began her journey with plugs a downward spiral for her. >> yes. we have addiction in our familiar so i have family members that are themselves addicts. we didn't really talk to her about that to tell her that she was in danger herself. so, she went to the doctor at 21, you know, you're an adult at that point, you go by yourself you don't have your mom holding your hand to tell you everything that's in your family and they prescribed her percocet and she took it and two weeks later she had a kidney infection and went to the emergency room and they prescribed her more. and at that point from me, for her i mean it was too late.

she was already addicted. and one thing led to another once she couldn't afford the percocet it went straight to heroin. and here we are, you know, from a toothache. >> it's been years of rehabs and it's gotten worse and she's a mom with three kids. i want to take a look at another clip from the video where you tell when you finally know it's reached the point where you had to say enough. >> right. >> let's take a look. >> the final straw for me the moment i realized high to cut ties is when i found her passed out in her car needles and baggies by her side at her children's day care. she had been shooting up while waiting to pick them up from school. it became clear that her children's safety was not her first concern and i finally asked her to leave my home and never come back. >> a lot of people would say it's hard to understand this journey. she stole everything from you, everything in the whole darn

house. why didn't you shut the door southeastern, tough love, we got to take a stand. why couldn't do you that. >> i think it's easy to say that to somebody that's not in the situation you're in. she's my only child. and for a long time we thought we could do it ourselves. you know, we thought, okay, we'll support her and we'll give her whatever she needs and we'll -- she had gone to rehab, she had two years clean and it's just easy to sit on the outside and look in and say here's what you should do. but until you're in this situation, you don't know what you would do. and as a mother, you just do whatever you can to help them and it wasn't until she endangered her children's lives that i final had to say, you know, okay, i have to make a choice, and i made the choice on that day. i chose the children over my own child. my grandchildren over my own child. >> on mother's day. >> yes.

>> ♪ >> and we're continuing to keep you informed with everything that's going on in the weather. take a look at this video, a slushy mess in center city overnight. continues to be with some of that turning to ice. so, be careful out there. hopefully they're getting the roads salted and cleared. and also, take a look at the ben franklin bridge. they were working hard. plows pushing through trying to get that snow that fell overnight out of the way so that you could have safe travels this morning. and some people may be enjoying some of it. you're taking a look here at the poconos where people are out there snowing -- skiing i should say already this morning enjoying themselves. it's actually not that cold as of this moment. we're going see what's going to happen going forward. caitlin, how does it look. >> we are improving that's for sure. yesterday snowed in all afternoon and evening. we saw that change to sleet and rain totals about four to six across much of the area.

here's some perspective for you. that a and to yesterday's snow our seasonal total for philadelphia now at 14.9-inches. this time last year as of february 22nd we had 58.4-inches of snow. so, yes, it could be worse. let's just remember last year with all the snow that piled up. our seasonal average 21.8 which we actually are right on track with. outside right now we're seeing the tail end of this system still bringing rain to parts of new jersey and delaware. there was some freezing rain across parts of interior south jersey that has now changed to just rain. it's lingering down the shore. it has cleared a lot of the i-95-295 stretch but it is still raining across parts of the parkway and southern end of the atlantic city expressway. if you're down the shore you'll see rain for the next couple hours before it just turns cloudy and foggy and just not so nice the rest of the day but at least we're seeing some milder temperatures. fox futurecast shows that rain clearing the coast. we've got clouds around through much of the day. models want to suggest we'll see some sunshine but that is going to be a little tough to pull off.

hey there karen. >> hi. sorry. >> as we go through the rest of the day maybe a few peeks. the best chance would be further north and west. otherwise, it's cloudy, it is going to be a cleanup day. it's an icy slushy mess out there so be careful if you step outside. temperatures are below freezing in many spots north and west so that's a lot of ice that maybe has congealed on a lost sidewalks near you guys. 34 degrees in philadelphia, mid 30's south and east. we're slowly climbing above freezing but it's going to take awhile to melt a lot of the slush and ice that's out there. just for today use caution. this is a good warming trend though. look at this 24 hour temperature difference across the area. visibility a bit of an issue especially at the airport. we saw those foggy cameras. two and a half mile visibility in philadelphia. they should rise slowly through the afternoon. 40 degrees we hit today. that will help with the melting but won't help as we go through the rest of the week. the arctic cold is back, 25 breezy and sunny on monday, 26 with the chance of the flurries on tuesday. not as cold wednesday its a brief respite with

temperatures above freezing but then back in the deep freeze thursday friday it stays chilly as we head into saturday. >> caitlin apologies for that. >> look at that woman, she's now the new head over there at swarthmore college. a new leader at the helm. valerie smith has been named the 15th president of swarthmore college. currently she's the dean of the college at princeton university. she's also a very distinguished scholar of african-american literature and culture. she will begin her new role at swarthmore on july 1st. >> ♪ >> the case of 72-year-old gordon van guilder has exploded across the country. he's the new jersey man arrested for having a 300 year old flinted lock pistol in his car. he says it was part of his antique collection. the overwhelming response to his arrest was outrage but now cumberland county sheriff's responded issuing a statement that the public is being misled. they say that another man in the car had drugs on him and that mr. van guilder admitted he was looking to buy drugs

that day and they suggest that heroin may have been involved in the situation as well. mr. van girl's attorney the joins us by skype and discuss the latest allegations. good morning, man, how are you? >> hey, good morning. thank you. >> you've heard all of this now. they say there may have been heroin in the car. they say mr. van guilder admitted he was there to buy drugs. it's pretty damning stuff if it's true. how do you respond to it? >> welcome to the smear campaign when you stand up for your rights. that's what we're dealing with here. i went online and i saw this bob austino watch where it says we believe the sheriff should lie. apparently this sheriff has credibility issues, an entire web site dedicated to watching him. >> so, this is not true, no heroine in the car? >> let me put it this way. not only is this not true, he never said this, it's unbelievablely misleading

because the individual who was driving was the one who got arrested and the drugs quote/unquote that that person had on him was adderal that was that he was prescribed for, all right, but it wasn't in the prescription bottle. he had his dose in a packet instead of in the bottle so he got charged at the disorderly persons level in municipal court. the drug charges with heroin quote/unquote all that's exposed of in municipal court because there wasn't any and it is ah adjudicated by the way of a conditional discharge by his attorney. >> for clarity -- >> my client had no drug charge. >> there was no heroin. >> yes. >> i do want to get to your client, though. so, this gun, this antique flint lock pistol where does he stand with those charges and what is your take on that. >> we're fighting those charges because unfortunately new jersey's slaw so absurd and here we say discretion

should have been exercised by the sheriff's office. they didn't. okay, we're hopeful that the prosecutor will. but we're dealing with a bona fide flint lock antique queen anne victorian pistol that is absolutely a throat no one and it should really be dropped but unfortunately new jersey's law when it comes to handgun bans says right in it includes antique handguns. there are proposals going forward in the legislature now because of this case to change that. to conform new jersey to federal law. under federal law they're exempt. >> what we're going do,, this has blown up as you've seen on social media. we're getting lots of comments so i'm going come and sit down with you some more and we'll follow up and get deeper into this but i thank you for taking time this morning to clear some of this up. >> my pleasure. thank you. >> for clarity everybody that's watching, we did personally reach out to the cumberland county sheriff's department on numerous occasions. thus far they're not speaking to us. if they are willing to, we

girls for success. to help get girls to graduate from high school on time, to be college bound and career ready. >> equip girls from under served communities and helping them reach their career goals as well as their own personal goals. >> it taught me how to focus, how to be confident in myself. >> how to go through an interview, to write a resume. many things you need when you're going out into the work field. >> we actually deal with every aspect of life. we teach them about how to take care of their skin, their hair, their nails, how to wear clothes properly and be appropriate settings. >> we also have power lunches where they meet different women from areas that they're interested in pursuing their careers. >> since the establish nment 2004 they've seen over 900 teen girls gadget from their amazing program. what they're doing here is truly wonderful. >> got over my fear of talking

in front of people, made me more confident and now i can face a group and it's really nice. >> we instituted programs that will help girls to -- for personal best and to reach success because we believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to become successful. >> you shouldn't be embarrassed. it's a really nice experience. the opportunities are endless. >> we have totally transformed girls from under served communities and they really take it and they flourish into beautiful, beautiful butterflies and just successful women with bright and bold futures and it just makes us very proud of our girls and our program. >> for teens who want to get involved with this program does it cost any money. >> it costs absolutely zero dollars, it's totally free for every girl who wants to join the program and it's a total nonprofit relying on donations from the nearby community. >> for more information we'll put a link on our web

myfoxphilly.com. samantha thank you. >> thank you for having me. >> ♪ >> hi, this is your fox food bite. today we're making one of our healthy lunch options here. it's a basically a play on a tune shah nah salad. chunk white tuna in water not olive oil. important to have it in water. one and a half tablespoons of finally chopped shallot. one table spoon of finally chopped chives, one table spoon of finally chopped parsley. now three or four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. now we'll mix all the tuna up with the extra virgin olive oil and fresh herbs. that gives it a nice light healthy aspect to the sandwich

rather than the mayo you'll have the extra virgin olive oil that gives it good flavors. mixed greens top our sandwich. add that to the mixing bowl and then add whatever your favorite dressing is. in house we use a white balsamic dressing. we build our two sandwiches. two rolls we open up here. spread on olive tapenade. you can buy it in store or chop up olives and spread that on top. about one table spoon per sandwich. marinated tuna on the bottom half of the roll. now we'll top our tuna with marinated plum tomatoes. marinade with a little fresh thyme and extra virgin olive oil. sliced boiled egg. now we'll top it with our dressed field greens and top it off with our roll and that is how you put together a nice
