tv   Good Day Philadelphia 7a  FOX  February 24, 2015 7:00am-9:01am EST

7:00 am
straight up at 7:00 o'clock.
7:01 am
give me the exact location. >> thinks at front and on front bep york and dauphin in the kensington section. it started out as a two alarm fire at a pay less shoe store on front street right underneath, the market frankford line. so what we're looking at right now is that fire has basically spread the entire length of the building, and back out on to the street, behind front street which is a along jasper and york. we are looking at an abandon building. black smoke has taken over. this is part two of the fire, here, ape as we pull out you can fire fighters fighting it from the air and about a block away. do you see them up there in the hook and ladder bucket. they are pouring water down from the sprinklers, or from the snorkels, alex. >> steve just tweeted out a picture. you know with that fire we had the other week in west philadelphia, ice house.
7:02 am
now the power lines are starting to have ice sickles from the the water being used on this fire and steve keeley is live at the scene now. the let's check with him. >> reporter: we have moved from under the el to the other side where the fire is and we can give you a vantage point and thanks to the wind we can safely stay where we are. you can see new with bright sunshine, some flames shooting up from this building. the the good thing about this building compared to a lot of others we have seen in kensington, not real high. the just a couple stories. that is also helping. the fire fighters can get above it. look at that brave man up on that ladder. usually we have water cannons. he is in that bucket truck, it looks like two men. they are up there. they are not even thinking about how cold it is or how wet it is because that water shoots on them as well but they are getting this fire tackled and down on the street, you see six hoses from our vantage point right on the corner of jasper right here and they have got fire from the ground up, and the fire from the sky down.
7:03 am
here's where we are, bob kelly has been talking about the york dauphin station that is shut down we are seeing fire fighters go in there to take a look at how this smoke is going over the tracks and still big owing into the the sky. i will ask jared to pick up his sticks for a second and we will show you one of the problems over here. we talked earlier about fire hydrant not working. only orange hydrants work in the city. through see with the orange tape is there a big x they painted on. that that is one of the close hydrants under the el it is frozen and they cannot use it. the that was another trouble concern here for the fire fighters, not having the hydrant work because of the severe cold. not only are pipes freezing in houses, but fire hydrants are freezing around the city and thank god no peoples lives were in jeopardy because of this fire because of this. they are putting salt down as they fight the fire as well. they got an update from the commissioner and executive commissioner and they say nothing new to report.
7:04 am
no trouble spots. they have it contained. it is not spreading. they are fighting it the out. the it the is amazing how these buildings that are abandoned still have so much stuff inside to burn. unconfirmed, but in addition to the fire, that we talk about where the the fire fighters were killed, where the owners were from brooklyn, this building in may also be owned by people from brooklyn, again, unconfirmed at this point. let me show you one last picture i took. in the middle of the ugliness and ice built up on the power lines a rainbow shooting up in the million-dollar will of the flames and smoke and ice. i thought that was a fabulous picture if i say so myself. >> look at the ice sickles forming on the wires there. >> yes. >> my goodness, bob. >> this is what we will have to deal with now. we have the power lines, and speaking of power let's talk septa septa says one of the reasons they have shut down the market frankford line in this area was because they didn't want what the tore get on to the track or water on to that third line. the third rail, which is a
7:05 am
power line, which powers the trains. all right we're back live, thinks sky fox over the scene of this two alarmer in kensington. i just talked to septa as well. they have bus routes detoured through the area bus routes three, 14, 15-b, the 17, the 48, the 54, the 58, the 60, abe of course, the market frankford line using shuttle buses between the berks and the huntington station. a as we pull out you can see a better view from sky fox. this building, adjacent to the york dauphin market frankford line train station there. as you can see the smoke we're getting folks tweeting from 95, the the schuylkill, even from center city that they can see the thick black smoke coming up, and blowing in towards the the city. that smoke is blowing west, over the neighborhood, up towards the boulevard, up towards the the schuylkill expressway, and they are in the upper right would be what
7:06 am
is the train station. you can see how tight those buildings are all together and as steve mentioned we saw fire fighters. it is contain. it looks like it is just a two story f there was a collapse they are back far enough that they don't have any injuries. inside these old buildings, and mike, we have talk about it, it is all that old wood. if it was an abandoned building, somebody said it could have been an auctioneers, god knows what was inside there but we have old timber. the roof, structure, that is what is burning right now and once that gets so structurally loose there, that is when we could have a collapse. >> there is a building right next door to it. that is what they are trying to protect that building with a business in it. >> if that is two stories, that other building next to it is four or six and that is amaze ago this they are able to keep those flames contained and not spread to that building which is next to it. in the neighborhood, again,
7:07 am
the the detours, front, dauphin, york, kensington. this is that hour now where folks are waking up, kid ready to head out to school. the septa has all of the buses on the detour in this route. as i mentioned the market frankford line. this is that stretch where market frankford comes down kensington, meets with york and makes that sharp turn right at york, dauphin, kensington. the it all comes together at that busy hub. so those buildings that we see there that is a busy active, thriving stretch there and the the avenue right underneath that market frankford line. again, septa using shuttle buses between berks and huntington and all of the bus routes are detoured in that area. one of the other reason why they shut that power off again is that if that ice build up on those tracks and third rail that could be permanent damage. not just to the system but also we saw steve mentioning that the fire fighters were walking up and using that
7:08 am
berks, excuse me, the york/dauphin train station as almost like a perch and maybe being able to shoot water from the second story train station on to the building. because we're looking at the back end of the building here. the the the front seat of the building butts right autopsy begins the market frankford elevated and here's a live look from steve's camera, our news van on the scene. do you see the the fire fighters, i mean they are kind of just got the hoses pointed, and the deputy commissioner said they are swapping them out making sure that the guys get back, get some warmth and get right back out there and these fire fighters unfortunately are kind of used to this type of a situation here in the neighborhood. not only do they get their regular fires every day but back in 2012 we had that five alarmer that lost two of fire fighters, fire fighters sweeney and lieutenant neary back on april 9th. anotherly the back of this
7:09 am
building that we are looking at here a across the street is the empty lot that contained that warehouse where we had that five alarm fire. so sue, the windy know having somewhat of a play here with the fire fighters. got news it is going away from the residential homes on the opposite side of the block and up and over the train station and that has given fire fighters a a chance to get water on all of the surrounding rooftops. >> yeah, wind coming out of the south east which means they are blowing northwest which means as you said away from new jersey. so we're seeing the flames go in that direction instead of towards all of the residents in that neighborhood but temperatures that is really what makes it so difficult for these fire fighters in a situation like this. for everybody who has to get kids off to school prime time right now make sure they are bundled up. we are back to below zero wind chills. there is our wind coming out
7:10 am
of the east which means it is going towards the west and that is why we are seeing fire and smoke blow the the way it is. 8 degrees feels like zero. keep that in mind dressing kids for the the bus stop. we have a storm system to the south and staying to the south thanks to high pressure in control for us. no precipitation today, and really for rest of the workweek, so to get you ready we are n'synx will digits this morning. 19 degrees by lunchtime. we will not get close to freezing with all this bright sunshine our high temperature mike and alex, 24 degrees. >> twenty-four. >> it is eight right now. we're trying to find a three-year old girl. >> she was abducted if delaware. this is an amber alert situation. we have identified a new car that the father could be traveling in. >> yes, a red car. >> reporter: alex and mike, a red suv that police believe he
7:11 am
may have ditch his initial car. they have recovered it. it was a 1989 gray mazda. we have video on have that being brought to the the new castle county police department. that was just before 5:00 o'clock this morning. police say all this started last night just before 7:00 p.m. when they were called to the 800 block of east basin road which is in the school side apartment complex. a woman report that had her ex-boyfriend michael trotta came to her home, salted her and took off with hear three-year old daughter, that is eleanore trotta. eleanore is about 60-pound. it was last seen, wearing a purple puffy coat, pink pants and frozen theme shoes. now the fbi is involved in the investigation as well as delaware state police and new jersey state police. they think he may have been heading to new jersey or even up to new york city. his last known address is mount laurel, new jersey. so this is an active amber alert situation here in, that the the new castle county police department is heading and as soup as we get more information but as are as far
7:12 am
as we necessity right now the three-year old's daughter is still missing. >> thanks, jenny, we will continue to have updates on this situation. we will get to that two alarm fire, we're checking back in on it this has been going on for more than two hours. we are taking a look at this ladder truck working on the the flames here. we will take another view of this fire. >> this is from our airport camera. you can see this fire from all over the the city. >> if we can take my traffic camera the camera i have up on my computer here this is a live look from center city philadelphia. the camera that would i typically be able to see ben franklin bridge or vine street expressway to give you an idea where this camera is. this is on the vine expressway looking north in toward the city. we are looking smack dab in the middle of kensington there. you can see the smoke. >> bob, it is upgraded to a three alarm fire. >> so, with each alarm comes about ten to 12 pieces of fire equipment.
7:13 am
we are now up to about 36 pieces of equipment, that are coming in the neighborhood. that will pull from all of the surrounding neighborhoods. here's a live look, this is the airport camera. >> you can kind of see that hazy smoke, over the the city sky line there, in the upper right portion of your screen and that would be the smoke higher it gets above the city sky line but this can be seen for miles. for folks starting out their trip say where they are in center city, in delaware county, when are in south jersey, you will see the smoke. that smell of smoke will be in the air. >> that smoke it looks like it is going to new jersey but sue says it is the other treks. >> the wind are coming from the south east. >> okay. >> maybe higher up it gets it spread itself out there. >> lets go back to the other camera there. we will look live from sky fox, this is the the two alarm
7:14 am
fire. >> three alarms. >> i'm ore people are taking pictures from all over the city so lets get to those here. sometimes we have a snow day people start send nothing picture of snow, this has turn into a smoke day people sending pictures from all over the area where they can see from where they are. this is a shot, apparently she said she took this out of her window. the she's on second street in northern liberties. >> this is another one, i'm trying to see where this viewer says. this is frankford and ontario from kevin. you can definitely see the smoke coming from there. we are getting more pictures coming in. keep sending us your photos so we can show them. i got a photo from east oak lane where they can see the fire. >> it is all over the city, probably new jersey too. >> east oak lane would be an area where that smoke is heading over toward the boulevard, wissohickon, up the lincoln drive. >> somebody just contacted me from brewerytown and said she
7:15 am
can smell it too. >> yes another view from center city. dark smoke there it is a three alarm fire that fire fighters are dealing w we have to think about this cold weather, the wind, they are dealing with 6-mile an hour wind. negative two wind chills. our thoughts are with the fire fighters as they hand this will situation in kensington. >> so, all this stuff happened overnight that we need to will tell but. this is a very popular place, dave and busters down on columbus. 911 calls came in from that i call it a entertainment center. so much fun there. you go in there, have drink, you eat, and playrooms. >> but a victim has been stab there it happened around 11:30 last night in the game room of the dave and busters. unidentified victim was rushed to hahnemann university hospital. the his condition is in the being released at this point. it is unclear what led up to the stabbing or if anyone is in custody at the this time. an unoccupied home in
7:16 am
gloucester county new jersey goes up in flames. investigators are trying to figure out how this happened. fire fighters were call to the 300 block of back creek road and swedesboro just after 11:30 last night. getting an upper hand was no easy task when it came to this fire there were no fire hydrants in the a area so water had to be brought in from harrison township. the water froze as it hit the ground making it more dangerous for crews on the scene. 7:16 on this tuesday. what is now known as the ice palace is now finally coming down in west philadelphia a they really went at it yesterday with the crane, crane operator started a huge job demolishing this building yesterday. last week fire fighters battled flames here in the extreme cold. all that water encased the building in ice. the the weight of it made fire damage to building dangerous. there it is, people went out from all over and took pictures of the ice castle. several streets around it are still closed as the demolition
7:17 am
continues. >> cigarettes let's talk about the budget cuts on the way for new jersey public employees. the target, pensions and health benefits. did you hear the governor, governor chris christie, will announce them during his budget address today. some of this address has been, well, basically leak so we learned bit. word is proposed cost cutting measures come a day after a judge ruled that governor christie violated the law when he slash last years state pension contributions. the the governor and lawmakers have four months to fund nearly $1.6 billion in pensions for retired public workers. 7:17. hundreds of parents in montgomery county are furious over plans to close two elementary schools. last night they showed up to tell them the met act a on school board what they think. thinks the first public hearing since the board proposed closing arrow head and audubon elementary school. the district says it may not have the millions in cash needed to maintain them
7:18 am
blaming plunging enrollment and budget problems. the plan would affect more than 700 students. parents are demanding the district change its course. >> our children should not to have suffer for their poor financial decisions. i think that there are other ways to reallocate fund to come up with better ideas maybe but i don't think children should to have pay for poor decision that is could have been prevented. >> another public hearing will be held tomorrow for methacton. they will make the final decision in the next few months. 7:18. lets look at the weather with sue. >> i want to show you a map with the wind speed because we're talking about the the fire and the direction that the smoke was blowing. most of the wind are northwest from the cold air that came in yesterday but as we look at philadelphia and these arrows show the direction from which the win is coming. so, this is easterly wind which means it is blowing toward the west, so for some reason that is in philadelphia it is wind are not very high,
7:19 am
because we have recorded wind of 5 miles an hour. we have seen some changing win directions to the south of us, as well. we have northwesterly coming yesterday, very windy, luckily things have calm down a lot. if this was 24 hours ago we would be talking about 25 miles an hour wind gusts like we had yesterday. that is wind speed. these are temperatures we are dealing with as we walk out the the door. 8 degrees in philadelphia. seven below in allentown. a new record for this date. two below in reading also a brand new rorrer. fourteen below. i believe that ties the record for mount pocono. we will get those official numbers in a few hours from the weather service. nine is our current temperature in wildwood. this is what it feels like outside. the it feels like 14 below in mount pocono. we have 0-degree wind chill in philadelphia it is back to those bitterly cold temperatures. and a wind chill advisory continues until 10:00 a.m. for the the poconos mountains counties of carbon and monroe for 20 to 30-degree below zero wind chills what we have seen
7:20 am
this morning. now we are on track to be one of the coldest februaries we have ever had. looking at the numbers, the coldest mean temperatures where you average out all of the temperatures over the entire month was 22.2. that was 1934. that is coldest february we have ever had but according to the forecast when you average out all of our temperatures we could come in as fifth coldest february ever recorded in philadelphia, and we have felt it almost every day of this month. looking down to the south our storm system that will stay there in myrtle beach they are seeing ice and snow this morning. very, very rare. rain to the south of that. snow in the north carolina as well. for us though it is just cold, cold, cold, 24 degrees today, not quite as harsh. we will inch above freezing on wednesday but thursday and friday back into the arctic air. saturday we are back in the the 30's and a we should get to the 40's starting for first two days of march. there is your seven day forecast from the weather
7:21 am
authority bob kelly, fire fighters are battling temperature and the win. >> here's a live look at our three alarm fire in kensington. you can see the smoke billowing up and over the city , out towards and moving in toward the city up toward neighborhood, kensington and north philadelphia and the boulevard. the fire centered around front street between dauphin and york at dauphin york market frankford line station impacting, kensington avenue and all of the neighboring streets with three alarms. we're talking about 36 to 40 pieces of equipment. they had to pull hosees from two or three blocks away nerd to get water because fire hydrants in that area, some were frozen over. detours not only for vehicles but for all of the septa bus routes. the septa says they have three buses, the three, 39, 89, on a detour and market frankford line is using shuttle buses between berks and huntington stations this morning. stay there we will be right
7:22 am
7:23 am
7:24 am
we are checking back at this fire in kensington this is a ground level view of what fire
7:25 am
fighters are dealing with this morning. at this point we are waiting to hear from the fire commissioner so steve keeley is standing by. a as soon as we get him we will get the the latest update on this three alarm fire. >> it looks like they have income down the flames. >> from this view. >> but it reached three alarms at one point. i just stuck my head out the front door at fourth and market, guess what it smells like. >> smoke. >> yes, thick. >> that smell is all over the city lets take a quick break from the fire to talk about some business. >> we are celebrating an anniversary here. >> yeah, opening bell, with maria bartrelo began on the fox business network. maria, how are you celebrating today, money honey. >> good morning, alex and mike. it has been a great year. we have so much to celebrate here at opening bell. we have a number of great guests on the program, we will talk with tim armstrong, ceo and chairman of aol, talk about what is happening on
7:26 am

7:27 am
>> you have not change at all still beautiful. >> thank you. >> well, i mean i feel really good just so proud and sort of lucky to have had this front row seat in so many stories in business from the empowerment of the individual investor where people empowered themselves by arming themselves with enough information to make their own financial decisions to the.com boom and busts and then to the globalization theme and the debt crisis in europe to the housing boom and housing bus. it has been a lot of up and down cycles and really interesting and an education to watch how investors react. >> many times i'm watching i have no idea what you are saying because i don't know anything about money. >> see that is dangerous. i get that from my girl friend. they say maria love the shoes, great outfit, is what the hair, in idea what you are talking about. so important to get your arms around your financial life because guys, i didn't have a family or someone to teach me. learn it on the job.
7:28 am
i recognize this is in the brain surgery. i'm happy that i have this sense of my own finances and my family's finances because it is important. you don't want to find yourself at a pointing nothing to retirement where you have no idea what is moving, coming in and going out in terms of are money congratulations on your one year anniversary, looking forward for more years, alex. >> 7:28. a lot of children have peanut allergies. it turns out you could prevent them from getting other allergies, how soon doctors say you should start giving your kids peanuts, yeah, give them peanuts, to prevent a peanut allergy. we will take another quick look over this kensington fire, we are still at this point waiting to hear from the fire commissioner so stay with point waiting to hear from the fire commissioner so stay with us we will have an

with the girl's mother in a new castle county apartment last night. police say he could be driving a bright colored suv, possibly a red ford explorer. his last known location was mount laurel. we will continue to update you on that situation as well a lot going on, welcome everybody. 7:32. weather, traffic and then back to the news. >> back in the deep freezer once again with these single digit temperatures and below zero wind chills that we are experiencing every where including the city this morning. the so with us stop buddy, once again you cannot sees very much of him. that is how it should within all that bright sunshine out there this morning. we have a six out of ten in weather by the numbers. looking at numbers today, 8 degrees, feels like zero, even with just a 5-mile an hour wind and that 5 miles an hour wind is coming out of the east blowing toward the the west. we are focusing on win direction this morning because of that kensington fire. no rain, or any precipitation in our area, that southern storm, which is wreaking havoc in place that he is don't usually get ice or snow that
7:33 am
is not affecting our weather today. your fox cast has sunshine and a high of 24, that is right only 24 and a low tonight of 17. so there it is, the cold continues on this cold month of february and that is making things even worse bob kelly as fire fighters try to do their jobs out there. >> hats off to the fire fighters. we will look live from one of our cameras in center city philadelphia. what is good here it is white smoke. that means they have gotten a handle on it. three alarm fire in kensington at the the intersection of york and dauphin streets there in the neighborhood, again, fire fighters responding. we're up to three alarms there. with all this white smoke billowing over the city you will smell it stepping out of the front door whether we are in northeast philadelphia, center city and toward north philadelphia. the detours remain in effect with three alarms we have about 36 pieces at least fire equipment, apparatus and hoses they had to pull from blocks
7:34 am
away. it is front street between dauphin and york. it is impacting jasper street as well as kensington. to give you an idea it is right where market frankford line comes off kensington and makes that sharp turn on to front street and continues into center city. that is the stretch or area of the neighborhood right now that is in lock down mode. septa says they are using shuttle buses on the market frankford line between the berks and huntington station. if you are in the neighborhood the best bet, walk to the berks or walk to the huntington and you will be good to go. buses will take folks through the neighborhood if they are coming from the north east and going into center city. also around the fire scene, bus routes three, 39, and 89 are on a complete detour. there is a half dozen other bus routes that could have delays, septa has had to pull buses off of thorough surrounding routes in order to supply the shuttle buses for the market frankford line. the tacony pal will my use bridge in the middle of the opening at the moment. mike and alex, back to you.
7:35 am
lets get back to this food allergy story and a new study. should you start giving your children peanuts early in their life, to prevent a peanut allergy. >> later in life. >> yeah. >> does this make sense is that what we should be doing. >> well, over the last ten years we have had a 400 percent increase in peanut allergies. my son nicholas happens to have a peanut allergy and we are trying to figure out why that is. one of the reasons might that be we have been avoiding, and telling parents look, your young children under the age of one or two, you have to avoid all that don't eat peanuts. the guidelines might change because this study shows an 80 percent reduction in kids with peanut allergies or developing peanut allergies if they were actually exposed to them early in life. >> you know, the the most remarkable thing about this whole story, we have footage of parents feeding peanuts to
7:36 am
babies. >> who knew. >> well, look, the theory is -- >> we are not talking about peanut and just peanut products at a certain age, there are choking hazard. >> what we're talking about is peanut protein. >> okay. >> if you put it in your mouth, you actually get the body to say hey, it is okay, we will not have a a allergy to it. many people get the allergy because they expose to the the protein on the skin. now everyone out there listening, listen to this. if your kid has an allergy to eggs or eczema, they did say, the author said look you better get your kid tested first. we don't want kids going out there eating peanuts if they are in the high risk group. you want to make sure you do it safely but this may change and may be ground breaking, change in the way we do business. >> can we jump to another study now apparently we all
7:37 am
should be using dishwashers instead of washing dishes with our hands. >> no, the opposite. >> no. >> this study shows if you have a dishwasher, at home, it is so good at cleaning the dishes, it gets rid of the bacteria and kid are not exposed to bacteria so they have in other allergies later on. we did a story about cats. if you have a cat. there was hair all over the place. it was a afghan with the cat, the hair, all over the place. it provided us a service. and that was that cat, allowed my kid to be exposed to bacteria anal begins and hopefully they will have less allergies later in life. >> my mom used to be able to stick her hand in what the their was scolding. i always thought a dishwasher, the the water is ten times hotter then you could ever put your hand in. >> it sterilizees thing. >> it sound good to me. >> we're too sterile. >> exposure, to bacteria get dirty once in a while.
7:38 am
>> your body can get exposed. if you don't use it you are going to lose it. >> i'm not washing my dishes. >> we have a lot of breaking news. my son and i part of the cub scout pack 151 at pen wood elementally school, spent the the night on the u.s.s. new jersey battleship, saturday night. >> were you thrown out the of your home by your wife. >> believe me, i spent a lot of nights at the battleship. >> fun. >> it was so cool. >> the people on there, the staff, mid segal my friend, emt, waiting to deal with the peanut allergy or something on the ship. we had a great time. shot a cannon. and sue, i think sue was on the u.s.s. new jersey. >> we did it in girl scouts. >> there you go. >> yes. now you what did you think of those mattresses. >> ain't the four seasons there. >> no. >> how was the food.
7:39 am
>> well, we won't get into that. >> i'll be fine. >> it was great. we will give a shout out. that is a treasure for new jersey. get your kid out there, awesome. you ought to be there. >> unaudible. >> he didn't stay the night. >> no. >> but where the big cats are, those big guns are. >> experience that history, it is great. it is. >> we used the mattress though. >> do you see now, stuff like that, no. >> you are supposed to tell doctor mike it was a pleasure with working with him here. lets get back to the big story of the morning this kensington fire, started at pay less shoe store two alarmer, spread to an abandoned building which ace three i alarmer. we have flames
7:40 am
7:41 am
7:42 am
you tell us what you want to pay and we help find options to fit your budget. nah, nah, insurance, nah, nah, nah, discount. my name's flo, you want to go out with me? no. uh-huh-huh! get on twitter. you know, funny is the wrong word. there is nothing funny about it. >> in. >> but balloons are funny. this is not funny. it could be because of the weather and salt. >> how about this, some of the rock salt being used in the
7:43 am
