for us but we we feel the improvement. it will be blustier i as we go through the afternoon but i think you'll like it better than the rain we had. fair weather clouds mixing in so we'll call for partly cloudy skies as we head into sunday evening. temperatures right now 34 in the poconos, 41 in allentown, 44 in philadelphia and it feels kind of refreshing out there now that we've seen the rain exist and we've lost the humidity an the damp feeling. it is a little brisk though. those are sustained winds, 15 to 20 mile per hour and later on this afternoon we could see higher gusts to 30 miles an hour. 52 today, sun and clouds and becoming breezy in the afternoon. tonight 34 degrees, partly cloudy skies, it will stay gusty but tomorrow we'll see the wind

diminish. sunny and windy today much nicer. mild on monday, hitting 60 for some of us. by tuesday, st. patrick's day itself, it's still mild. 56 degrees with a chance of shower late. then we turn much, much colder, just 40 on wednesday with wind chills in the 20s and the 30s that will last through friday when spring officially begins by next weekend, we will rebound with temperatures in the mid 50s. we'll have much more coming up in the second half of the show. >> new in the news this morning, a truck went into a home in astin, delaware county. the driver and the passenger were taking into custody. the family was at home at the time but no injuries have been reported. and one person was

hospitalized, another car crashed. this one in philadelphia's oxford neighborhood. at 3:30 this morning. so far no word on what caused the crash. >> and there was a house fire, this happened in. tacony section. this happened about 8:30 last evening. it took firefighters about a half hour to bring those flames under control. it looks pretty bad right there. the good news, nobody was injured. also, philadelphia bidding a final farewell to an absolute hero. police sergeant robert wilson iii was laid to rest following an emotional tribute yesterday. the police department announced it plans to name the medal of valor after him. he was shot and killed ten days ago where he was buying a gift for his son.

how many heartfelt messages. heros are never forgot in. you are a hero in my eyes. your sons will miss you but will be so proud that you were their daddy. there is that memorial fund that has been set up in sergeant wilson's name. the police and firefighter credit union will be accepting donations at any of their branches. and you can find images of the funeral on our website. we carried it live here on fox 29. >> in the news right now, a north carolina woman is in the fight of her life and she tells us the fight just got a little bit tougher after a trip to philadelphia. sabina, what's happening with this case? >> if this story doesn't get your blood boiling, i don't know

what will. she's just trying to stay alive and beat her cancer, and on a trip to philly, some crook took the one thing that was helping her do it. she's from north carolina and fighting stage 3 cancer. she's being treated at cancer treatment centers of america in philly. every two weeks she travels up to town. you can imagine what all of that travel is like for that patient. she tells us she left 30th street station on an amtrak station. rather than bear the weight of her suitcase, she checked it but when she got home she had the bag, but all of her valuables and her cancer medicines were missing. her family hasn't been able to replace the meds locally. so for now she has to go without. >> every day that i go without it makes my symptoms worse so it

the first african-american of sae at the university of oklahoma. good morning. we know it's really early where you are. so we appreciate you getting up with us. >> good morning, and thank you for having me. >> listening to the attorneys quotes and seeing everything that happened, i'm curious your take on this. you're a member of the fraternity, it's like a brotherhood. what was your feeling on this and how do you think it's been handled? >> my feeling on this, you know, the bringing in the attorney, the first stories came out they

planned a lawsuit against the university of oklahoma. it's not an approach i agreed with at all, nor many of the other alums at the fraternity. but i think digging deeper into this, looking at the statement that was made by the attorney, i don't think that, you know, that's ultimately the intent. you know, there are still guys in that house who were guilty just of bad judgment and association with others who would sing a song like this openly. so they certainly have some issues going there. but i do think, even though you know again being very upset about this and having a lot of disdain for those involved, i don't think that every single person was involved in it. that there are people who are need to have their rights looked out for. >> i heard some of your comments and some of the comments of others.

people were actually applauding the university president for acting swiftly. they were applauding the fraternity for acting swiftly. when you hear now that they're investigating whether or not the rights of people singing were violated, does it change how you feel about how this is all being handled? >> you know, honestly, this is the way i feel. i thought the ones that are -- that had sang the song, i think their punishment was appropriate. i think that the university president is highly capable, and i think that just, that hateful kind of speech cannot have a place in our society. it cannot have a place -- i know that there are groups that come into university to speak but i think that when students are speaking like that, it just damages the university to the point that you know, if this were a -- the university is a business, and, you know, in the business world, if t the ceo were to take this type of action very swiftly, they would have broad latitude to do that and i

think the president deserves that same latitude. >> there's a lot of people who have been responding to this. let's take a quick look and get some of your comments. great way to show your intelligence level by using that word. anyone using that word instantly loses my respect. the parents and the school must be so proud. disgusting. and garrett writes had it been blacked singing racist songs about white nothing would have happened to them and it likely wouldn't have made the news. your response to those messages? >> the first response i would say yeah, this is certainly disgusting. i don't know where the type of insense insensety came into this house. clearly when i was there we were a diverse house. we had people from all socioeconomic background, we had the working class kids and the

wealthier kids and everyone in between. we were all together and we had earn willing experiences from one another. i remember taking a caucasian fraternity brother to see my greatgrandmother's grave site in a segregated cemetery. and we shed tears together. when we don't have diversity, we don't have those learning opportunities that can occur between the races. for the second response, i don't want to get into that. i know that people have those type of feelings towards things and i think that overall in america we need to have a constant dialogue on racism and hate speech and intolerance. we cannot tolerate intolerance in this country. >> i think that's a great place to leave it and hopefully

1771, it's the st. patrick's day parade. it marches down the parkway toward the art museum. it's the second oldest st. patrick's day parade in the entire country. >> this is going to be controversial today. we know there is going to be a gun rally today at is:00. people are being asked to bring their guns. why is this happening? because in that township they banned guns in park and this is a protest of that moment. >> it will be interesting to see how it plays out. coming up a stunning report about the state of schools. what makes pennsylvania stand out. all of that in the report. >> and in weather we see the rain has moved out. brighter skies wait for this

scientific research. do you weather your dog understands anything? a group of researchers from japan says they do, and they're on to you. that's right, a cording to a recent study, no sense in pretending. your dog knows when you're lying. sounds pretty silly for a creature that doesn't even speak. well, speak actual words. to prove it, researchers have dog owners point to containers full of food. some were empty. dogs figured out whether owners weren't being honest about which containers had food. sounds like a silly team to spend time on but our dr. mike says it's pretty interesting. >> dogs can tell whether their owners are lying or not. how do they do that? well, they can tell by gestures and if those gestures indicate that fido is going to get a bone and he doesn't, that dog remembers.

that we're lucky to be rid of for now. we'll see partly cloudy skies as we go through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. we'll close out the weekend on a fairly quiet note. not too cold, we're mainly in the 40s. 42 in philadelphia. 45 in wildwood. winds are starting to increase and that will be the big story through the afternoon. right now 15 mile per hour winds at the airport and through south jersey. if you are headed to the parade, expect temperatures in the upper whos. that being said, we have sunshine, high of 52 in philadelphia. st. patrick's day itself still looks mile, chance of showers late, and then much, much colder. spring officially begins on friday night. >> in your health this morning, a new diet trend. have you heard of ai? this is a new diet you may see

popping up on menus. now there is a new trend called antiinflammatory. we brought in a nutritionist, also a chef to show us what it is. >> before we get to you i want to get to a tweet because some people have been talking about this one. this comes from someone who has quite a name i she calls herself impressively sin is ter. she says i need to be on an antiinflammatory diet, but i ain't got time for that. who is the kind of person who would seek out a diet that is antiinflammatory. >> really, everybody should be on an antiinflammatory diet, which is more closely related to the mediterranean lifestyle. research is really out there right now for people with joint issues or as yoe arthritis, cancer research. >> what's the goal. why is someone trying to do this? >> the goal would be healthier lifestyle. antiinflammatory is really for

people that have arthritis or alzheimer's or any kind of inflammation. >> sometimes people with serious diseases are trying this. >> yes. researchers are looking into alzheimer's, cancer, and the process how the diet can actually improve the outcome. >> less inflammation, you eat better? >> really you shouldn't wait for inflaments to occur before you start eating healthy. >> what are the foods we should be putting into our diet? >> there's no set food that is in particular that's antiinflammatory. it's just a diet that's rich in a bunch of fruits, vegetables, whole grains. get away from the processed stuff. so really you want a diet that's high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, a lot of fish and seafood. >> what did you bring in here? >> flaxseed.

it will help the antiinflammatory process. if you get flaxseed, if you eat it whole, you won't get the same properties as you would if you cracked it. >> we think about olive oil. >> olive oil is a great source of omega 3. everything in moderation. you can overdo it. >> fish, i always think of salmon. >> salmon is a great one. any other cold water fish. any fish really is better, it's going to be leaner than beef or pork. >> if i want to do an antiinflammatory diet, or maybe i see this on the menu, what are the foods they're taking out? >> all the high fat dairy foods, all the high saturated fat meat products. any fried foods. it really should be a light meal, well balanced and

shooter's mother. they say they deserve payment because their loved ones were injured as a result of an unsecured firearm. adam lanza shot and killed 26 people, so many of them children, with a legally purchas purchased gun. >> it's one of our favorite segments. we have the junior reporters. why is it one of our favorite segments? we've got talented reporters from all over the area. one of them amanda dodson from rider university is here this morning. we all know the law is a little bit crazy, but you find out we have no idea. >> it's things i don't necessarily know are enforced but they are still laws on the books. it was pretty interesting to figure them out and i hope everyone learns something from it. >> reporter: we're all familiar with the basic laws like you must stop at a red light, you can't steal a car or rob a

barng. but there are some unusual laws still on the books in t pennsylvania that you may not be so familiar with. i've enlisted the help of philadelphia's residents to help me sort them out. have you heard of any crazy laws in. >> all right. doing some research i found that sleeping on top of a refrigerator is actually illegal. >> i that's ludicrous. i done know who would sleep on top of a refrigerator. >> i try to do it every now and then. >> what? >> and what about catching a fish with your bare hands? >> that's ridiculous. >> pretty crazy. you don't get a lot of that in center city. >> believe it or not, these statutes are still enforceable. a special cleaning ordinance bands highest wives from hiding dirt under the rug, a person is not eligible to become a governor if he or she has participated in a duel.

instagram, just make sure you use the hashtag #fox29weekend. >> i'm glen gross of fat jack's barbecue and this is your fox food bite. today we're going to do a side dish called dirty rice. it got its origin in louisiana. the reason it's called dirty rice is because of the meat in if it when you cook it. four cups of your favorite white rice. follow the instructions on the paeng. you're going to add two ounces of chicken base and about a quarter pound of butter to the water. stir it up. we're going to start with half a cup of melted butter and we're going to add about 3/4 cup died red peppers, about 3/4 cup diced

green pep and onion. let that stuff fizzle a little bit. incorporate it all. you want your veggies cooked just a little so they're a little bit career and they're firm. so what you have here, while our veggies are cooking is bulk italian sweet sausage. what you're going to do with your sausage while it's cooking, this is probably going to take five or six minutes and you want to chip it into small little pieces as it's cooking. stir it around a little bit. so i'm using italian sweet sausage. you can use ground beef, chicken, you can use steak meat. the traditional is made with chicken livers. i'm using sausage. now we start to incorporate it.

and the big key to your sausage being done is you don't want to see any pink. keep chopping as you go. almost done. so this is pretty much done. so we're going to take our four cups of white rice and add it to our sausage mixture. let's incorporate it. stir everything together. don't bring your sausage mix. start adding those seasoning. we're going to add about half a tablespoon of petter, about a half teaspoon of cayenne. notice how the color has changed. once you add yaur ingredients, turn the stove off. mix everything up. everything is blended, cooked,

all the flavors are melded together. now it's time to eat our dirty rice. finishing stuff, add a little bit of scalons to the top. so now it's time to taste our dirty rice that's incredible. this has been your fox food bite.
