8:07 am
this all comes after a two-year investigation. investigators say she goes by the name of young lioness and is accused of wanting to join with and fight with and martyr herself on back of isis. she applied for a u.s. passport back in february and last month she had purchased a plane ticket to head to spain. they also allege she researched buses from barcelona, the common routes to syria. >> you trying to join an organization that is terroristic, you don't know who you're putting in jeopardy. >> investigators say she communicated with an isis fighter who asked her if she wanted to be part of martyrdom. she said that would be amazing.
8:08 am
a girl could only wish. so many people are talking about this. we've gotten hundreds of comments on our facebook page. another one down, probably a million more. you never know where they are planning this stuff. these people are corrupt. this is not part of islam. islam does not teach killing innocent people. we are going to be speaking with a professor to discuss isis and our war on terror. please weigh in, use our #fox29weekend. >> over the next week, jewish people will refrain from eating bread in commemoration of the unleavened bread they ate as they rushed out of egypt. >> the pilot's mental state now

>> would you look at this? this was a lunar eclipse that was the shortest blood moon. it was just early this morning. in case you didn't get a chance to see it live, here it is. it began just after 6:00 eastern time this morning. when the moon entered the earth's shadow. let's get over to caitlin roth. >> the third time in a two-year time span that we'll see that blood moon cast that creepy glow. yes, i am reading from google.com right now. i didn't know that myself. each month though, the full moon has a name. so the blood moon was early this morning. well we saw the showers move out overnight and we're looking at improving weather as we go through the rest of the weekend forecast. a lot of you traveling, a lot of you have things with the kids. what can i expect over the
8:13 am

8:14 am
should hit 70 degrees, and tuesday the showers role back in. we could be stuck in this pardon of clouds and showers for a few days that will keep temperatures cooler back into the 50s but as the rain ends on friday there, we'll see temperatures jump back into the 60s. we'll keep you updated as we go through the rest of the morning. >> let's take a look at some of your headlines this morning. pope francis is condemning the deadly attack by islamic militants in kenya this week. it killed 147 people. he is praying for a change of heart among its perpetrators. the white house says the attack will not stop the president from visiting kenya in july. and for the very first time, the u.s. and iran along with other world powers have agreed
8:15 am
to a framework to limit tehran's nuclear program. it includes mandates for iran to reduce its centrifuges and it must agree to inspections that verify compliance. in change the un will begin lifting some of those harsh combhik sanction. >> iran wouldn't be at the negotiation table unless they thought they could get something and unless they needed something. so keeping the pressure on is a way to make sure they change their behavior. >> the president said this morning he expects a vigorous debate on this one and he has promised they willfully brief congress on the substance of the iran deal in the weeks to come. >> in this morning's cover story, a philadelphia woman is in federal custody. investigators say she was making plans to join isis. she tried to travel overseas making various posts on twitter
8:16 am
aligning herself with terrorists. when thomas bought a tickets to spain, that's when officials made a move and raided her north philadelphia home. joining us now to talk about her arrest and the war on terror, professor lustig. stop wasting our time. it's one thing to disagree what your country is doing but to go against secrets to help and aid people in this country that's just treason. this is nothing new. you would be very surprised at home hits the police department gets for terrorist alerts. starting with that second comment, is there more of a focus on this? are there more threats are we just living in a different information age so we hear more about it? >> we are living in a different
8:17 am
kind of circumstance. the initial idea after 9/11 was we were going to be attacked by sleeper cells in the united states, real dedicated terrorists activated by organizations abroad who spend their lives thinking about how to hurt the united states for political reasons. those people exist and studies of them show that they're perfectly normal psychologically. what we see now is a different kind of thing. those people are looking for loaded guns. some are air planes, some are bombs. what we now have is through social media and the internet, those groups able to find in the united states and europe loaded guns. that is people who are so disturbed and upset that they can find through social media a dramatic way to express their internal tensions and they are what's called a lone wolf terrorism threat and much more difficult in some respects and probably more prevalent.
8:18 am
>> and you wrote a book on this. now with social media, there are people who make threats, there are people who will make comments. where's the line between someone who is upset and someone who is going to act on it? >> we have legal lines for that. ty think our law enforcement is able to track as best they can and to move when action is taken as it endangers the united states as it did in this case apparently. i think the key thing here is to lower the number of people who are available for these kinds of messages, and that means strengthening a mental health system that has really abandoned thousands, if not tens of thousands of americans to find their way in a world where they feel furious, paranoid, anxious and disturbed and use social media and use these vivid images of heroism and struggle to find that way to express that internal fury. i think this is a wake-up call
8:19 am
for our mental health system as much as it is the security system. >> when you talk about the mental health side, how far does the country -- how far should the country go in prosecuting someone like kiona here in philadelphia. >> i think it has to be a case-by-case situation. people have to be evaluated whether she is psychologically fit to stand trial. i think we see in a lot of cases, the jihad jane case and others, that people who are put in prison or people who have been going through disturbed times in their lives, suddenly transformed themselves into a kind of fanatic that is available for this type of a mission, quote unquote, sponsor from abroad, but this is really taking advantage of a gun that's already loaded, not of a person who's turned into a dedicated terrorist. >> we appreciate you spending some time with us. this is the third person in just a few days. so obviously this story is not
8:20 am
going away. we'll continue to keep you informed. thank you. and folks, we want to hear from you. we want to know what you think your comments on this issue, it's all over social media. you can leave us facebook comments, you can tweet. just use the #fox29weekend. >> 8:20 is the time. we want to get your opinion on this one. very popular comedian turns to social media when officers pull him over. why one of the tweets is causing controversy. also, does a local mother who gets a pardon from governor christie this week, she's speaking out. what she has to say about that controversial arrest. good morning to you, thank you for send thanking one. and another really cute dog. this is a reward for saving -- after fire out there. keep your comments coming, your

questions and your pictures. we also have good music requests. what are we listening to? >> this one is "one less problem without you." it's actually called "problem." make sure use the hashtag it's actually called "problem." make sure use the hashtag #fox29weekend. sometimes, caring for your neighbors means going the extra mile. when our patient, susan, mentioned her dad couldn't make it in to pearle vision to get his eyes checked...
8:22 am
we went to him. and we realized, if he had trouble getting new glasses... he probably wasn't the only one. to us, eye care is about living dr. pearles legacy. building a trusting relationship with the person behind the eyes. this is genuine eye care, right in your neighborhood. this is pearle vision. now, more and more americans are discovering that shredding galbani mozzarella yourself inspires moments that are simply better. mmm, galbani (sfx: kiss). italy's favorite cheese brand.

welcome back. it's the bottom of the hour now, 8:29. in your headlines. sara brady has died. she became a powerful force in politics after her husband was badly wounded protecting president reagan during an assassination attempt. brady helped to oversee legislation that put restrictions on gun purchases. she was 73 years old. also a philadelphia woman who faced 12 years in jail for taking her legally licensed gun across the bridge into new jersey has been granted a pardon by governor christie. >> new jersey doesn't recognize pennsylvania's permits so without christie's intervention, she told me the challenges she was facing for being labeled as a felon.
8:30 am
>> i feel as though i could start over now. >> i've been following this case and she shared with me it was nearly impossible to get a job with a felony gun possession on her record. she hopes that the pardon will allow her to get back to work but hesitates to go into new jersey. there's more she wants you to know about her story and she will join us here tomorrow. >> how about this, the revel finally sold. a judge is now objecting the sail of the atlantic -- sale of the atlantic city resort. it cost $2.4 billion to build when it opened in april 2012 now selling at a 96% discount.

the phils playing the first home game of the season. spring training game of course. the test for the new security system. starting this year, come monday, fans have to go through metal detectors. this is a new rule for all of the major league baseball stadiums as a result of the boston marathon bombings. you can see the fans right there getting into the ballpark quickly. the crowd was lighter so the real test is going to be against the sox on monday. >> they work great. they are fast technology. they're much more efficient than a pat-down, less intrusive. we're still learning but hopefully we'll get to a point where we are experts on this. >> they're saying this is going to take less time. here's the deal. fans take out your phones, your cameras, your keys out of your pockets and don't bring in any bags bigger than 16 by 16 by 8
8:32 am
inches. >> measure all that before you go in. >> here's another rule. homeowner day is rainy, disgusting, cold and wet. let's find out if that's going to be the case? >> it always is. it's just the rule. >> let's listen to our question. what do you want to know? >> it's raining but i hope the weather clears up because i want to do something and don't want to be stuck in the house. >> i don't want you to be stuck in the house either. the good news it is clearing out. we've got sunshine but it is windy an the winds are going to howl all day long. so you lose one for another here. outside right now, ultimate doppler showing the showers from yesterday pushing off. clouds are clearing rather quickly and we should have a decent amount of sunshine today. your fox futurecast for today, it's not necessarily what you see but it's what you feel with
8:33 am
the wind. we've got the winds, the air keeps coming in and it keeps getting cooler. the sun is out, daytime highs try to rise. we're going to see temperatures stuck where they are all day. clear skies as we head into tonight. if you're out and about on this saturday evening, no problems outside. 37 in allentown, 51 in philadelphia, 54 in dover. we'll probably only rise a degree or two from where we are now. winds are sustained out of the northwest about 20, 25 miles per hour. we've got a lot of races out there this morning. you're going to be running not just into winds, but gusts up to 40 miles an hour. we've got clouds giving way to sun, windy and cool, tonight we clear out, 39 for the low temperature. easter sunday itself looks beautiful. so the winds just calm down as
8:34 am
we head towards tomorrow. we've got a lot of sunshine and even some warmer temperatures expected. morning services is chilly but we rise into the 60 by the afternoon. temperatures still in the 50s by evening. >> at 8:34, we have some new details about that deadly germanwings plane crash. we now know the copilot sped up the descent before crashing. that plane went into the side of the mountain killing everybody on board. a lot of people are still wondering how is this guy allowed on the flight deck. here's what we know so far. he appears to have locked the captain out of the cockpit. antidepressants were found in his home and investigators say he may have been suffering from mental health problems. let's look at twitter. it wasn't andreas lubitz who
8:35 am
flew the plane into the mountain. it was his disease. everyones talking about how he had depression. he is a mass murder. do not malign those with mental illness for his benefit. so it was deliberate. they knew this pilot had been seeing doctors for depression. so why was he allowed to fly and to kill those people. so let's join us this morning and talk about this right now. we have a therapist, good morning to you dr. wilson. >> good morning. >> this is such a difficult one because we want to be sensitive to people who have depression, but certainly we don't necessarily want them in the cockpits of our airplanes. what do you make of this situation? >> this situation is uncommon for someone to fly a plane into a mountain with 150 people on board, but the common illness of mental illness is not out of the realm of possibility when we
8:36 am
think about what we deal with every day. we're just talking to the professor downstairs in the green room and one of the things i said to him was that mental illness looks like you and i. they're the people that are next to you on the elevator with you or sometimes at the dinner table. mental illness is real, and quite frankly, we're not doing enough. if i were to rate how we're doing with mental illness, i would say this country and other countries have a big fat f. we have to pay more attention. >> clearly he was getting treatment. how can we make sure that people who are troubled, not in positions where they can bring harm to so many people.
8:37 am
>> this is something that the public needs to know as well, there's a duty to warn and a duty to protect. so if at any time this young man stated to the mental health professionals that he wanted to harm himself or that he was thinking about harming other people, than the authorities should have been notified. like i said, all bets are off in terms of confidentiality when someone says they're a threat to themselves or they're a threat to someone else. now, just -- it's important to understand that that doesn't mean that someone that comes to a mental health professional and has depression needs to be worried that their koftionality is going to be breached. the reality is many of us have mild depression, event-oriented depression, someone dies, you have a job loss. most people go through that at some point in their lives. but it's not the kind of depression that will send you into a downward spiral and make you want to kill yourself or
8:38 am
hundreds of people. those are major red flags that need to be attended to by the authorities taking over to protect others but to protect him. we're not doing a good enough job with that. >> in this country they have a policy, obviously that pilots must self-report but it's not so punitive where they lose their entire career if they get treatment but they're trying to be more aware about the problems with mental illness and they could eventually after treatment fly once again. so it's not something where you would not want to do it because it would ruin your career and ability to earn. >> what we think about it from this perspective. if you had a physical illness and you needed to take a leave of absence to get the proper care, that would not then prevent you from going back on your job. that would not prevent you from earning a living. and we're all connected mind body and spirit. so we need to change the conversation to recognize that as human beings we are going to be bound to experience not only
8:39 am
physical illness but sometimes mental illness. but it is real. what has happened in the past is we shied away from the conversation and then the conversation does not move to the places where putting dollars to places where people would get the support and care they need. people shouldn't lose their jobs over it, but we also shouldn't put other people in jeopardy because people are mentally ill or need to have treatment. >> one of the take-aways i learned this morning, in this country there would have been that obligation of the professional to report that mental state of the pilot. dr. wilson, thank you. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> she didn't expect to deliver her baby on the side of the highway, but she had no choice. why this mom is now saying thanks a lot, obama. and a bucks county man is changing young lives with just a

address. it. with the ever-increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes, women need to know if you're pregnant or if there are young people around, nicotine cigarettes can be dangerous to developing brains. nicotine can have negative effects on memory and other parts of the brain. don't do it. in a new study, researchers have found that if you take a nap during the day for about 30 or 40 minutes, you can actually improve your memory and performance at work fivefold. tell your boss at work dr. mike said it's okay to take a nap. i'm dr. mike. said it's okay to take a nap. i'm dr. mike. have a great weekend.
