tv Good Day Philadelphia 7a FOX April 15, 2015 7:00am-9:01am EDT
7:00 am
one person under arrest as fire officials investigate what they believe is an arson, another person is now in the hospital, in critical condition. what investigators are saying happened here. a dog tag of my daughter, very nice, so i remember her every day. >> this right here is half a heart, she is wearing the other half of a heart in the grave. >> weeks before graduation prom when 18 year old nicky lost her life in a distracted driving accident. now, her father wants to make sure no family has to go through what he suffered. he's here today, talking about how he's getting out the message.
7:01 am
>> and guess what i got to do? sit down with charles chaput of philadelphia, we talk about the pope's upcoming advice knit september, and get this, he actually didn't want to hogs the world meeting of families. he wrote a letter, saying, you sure you want to have it in philly? but now he's totally changed his mind, he's ready. >> up be it nervous. >> he's excited so are all of us. >> a deal. >> coming up. >> we it tell your side, wearing three piece suit, how about that. >> you had a three piece err going on there! >> two reasons. >> go ahead. >> one, i was race in the catholic schools. >> right. >> so i wanted to dress appropriately. >> plus putting on some weight, in my belly, a vest will cover that little -- >> nothing there. >> there is nothing there.
7:02 am
>> oh, it is there. >> really? no, i don't believe it. one day we might be worthy of three piece suit here on the show? >> he's an archbishop. you know what's real interesting? you know, he was -- i'm explain it later. >> which question, did you get a blessing? >> i d he gave me a cathy kiss many. so he goes -- and he said it is not too late for me to join the priesthood. >> it wasn't too late. >> are you thinking about it? he said being a priest, or a bishop, or archbishop; like being on tv. >> be a good priest. >> lost all credibility? >> well -- >> you have the qualities? >> great sense of humor,
7:03 am
archbishop. >> can't wait to see it. >> looking forward to. >> this okay, how about a day to look forward to weather wise? remember, we had six yesterday? >> we sure did. >> turned it upside down. shear nine for today. all right, so start off with a sweater over jacket, because it is on the chilly side out there. we're seeing mix of sun and clouds, just like bus stop buddy encountering at the bus stop. you see there, in the picture, above old city, 49 degrees, well, you said little on the chilly side. northerly breeze out there. but look at this. we zoom up to 70. mostly sunny skies, we call that nice day. breezes ten to 15 miles an hour. so sun glare on the roadways, hopefully not too many problems, bob kelly. >> couple of problems so far this morning. you're right, sun popping out. no complaints. we'll take the sun glare over the rain today. live look at the benny, no problems coming in toward philadelphia. all the lanes open, not the case here. on the schuylkill expressway, this is live look, westbound, on the schuylkill expressway,
7:04 am
already heavy from approaching the boulevard, all the way out to gladwynn, all because of earlier accident, now the cars have been moved off to the shoulder, so, both of lanes are open, but it is also attracting delays on the even side, between conshohocken and gladwynn. accident, for the the gang leaving quakertown, southbound the extension, just south of the quakertown interchange. and then north on the freeway, an accident, right at the creek road ramps here. so head northbound, in toward philadelphia, expect delays, trolleys all looking good at the moment. mike, alec, back to you. >> mom day two hit and runs situations. >> so the driver of suv, police have impounded supposed to turn himself in this morning, hit-and-run that involved the four year old who died. >> who died, yes. >> investigators say, this woman hit and killed four year old boy with her car in
7:05 am
southwest philadelphia, then they drove off, but they found the car. >> to steve live with the latest. >> here is where it was, love park parking garage across the street from the mayor's offers, the mayor yesterday morning, that put out the word, that there would be $20,000 reward offer, which is the standard reward in all cases where anybody is killed in this city, and in a was the case here. they find the car. the lawyer says i'll be with her when they turn themselves in. the surveillance video the best evidence they had both against this woman, likely, the best evidence she would have had that this was an accident, and she wasn't at fault. she wasn't driving irradically , and she didn't do anything wrong until she left d she leave because of the night before in milwaukee where a man did stop to help a kid hit and killed by hits van, and then somebody shot and killed him, out of anger?
7:06 am
>> the question, sometimes some street justice done, as a result of that, and we've had that in the past where the person driving the vehicle would drive. >> if anyone is fearful, should pull away, but call 911, call, let us investigate the crash. that will could happen. >> no impairment, everything likely, probably, would not be charged, probably ended up in court but certainly not criminal court in a case like. that will and everybody's got to be aware, this time of year, little ones will be out there and they'll run out there. happens every spring, every summer. exercise caution driving. >> so, police towed the car out of the love park garage shortly after dinnertime, basically, 24 hours after this accident happened, the night before, and they're getting a search warrant at last word with the detectives, they'll take fingerprints on drivers wheel and around the car, and
7:07 am
then analyze both the inside and then of course the outside, that front end, and the under carriage, just to make sure that they have all of the evidence they need in the case. twenty-seven year old woman un for the lip, a lot of drivers can feel for her, because she is happening to be in the wrong place, wrong time, driving 25 miles per hour even slower but enough to kill four year old kid who for some reason wasn't being watched closely enough at night, and was able to run between those two parked cars, and right into her path without one. she had no way to see him. shorter than the vehicles. if you lever, no matter what your reason was, facing mandatory prison time. >> it will be interesting to see what she sayings, why she kept going. >> find critically injured man. >> officials believe the fire was intentionally set. jenny, what's going on here? >> yes, so police have a man in custody, 52 year old man, apparently went to the 35th priest sing, after this
7:08 am
fire started. and gave police some information that led to his arrest. we are here on the 1600 block of west nidro avenue, where fire broke out just before 2:00 this morning. it was placed under control shortly thereafter. firefighters focus their efforts on a second story rear bedroom, you can see that's where most of the damage is. that section of the home is now destroyed. police tell us the 67 year old female was able to escape the property unharmed. she told police that this row home was a rooming house with multiple amounts, inside. the man who was arrested in connection to this fire also lived in the building, police tell us, that while fire officials were on scene investigating this man showed up at the 35th police district and gave police information that led to his arrest. >> fifty-two year old male is in police custody, the fire marshall is on location, inside the property, trying to determine if, in fact, this fire was an arson. it was intentionally started. it appears, right now, that
7:09 am
the fire may have started, just preliminarilly, may have started, in a second floor rear bedroom. that's consistent because the rear of the property was fully engulfed. >> so this fire being investigated as an arson, but official cause of the fire is not yet known. again, 53 year old in critical condition at einstein medical center, and 52 year old who also lived at the property is under arrest. world meeting of families and the pope's visit to philadelphia, little more than, what, five months away now? so, i got to go over to the rectory over by the cathedral, and talk to after bishop charles chaput, to talk about the preparations, and get this, at first the archbishop said i should send a letter to the vatican, warning them, that we have a lot of, you know, major issues in this
7:10 am
archdioces, maybe, you know, the meeting of families shouldn't be in our city. just warning them that we have a lot of issues here. >> yes. >> so, the city expect 2 million people to flock here for chance to caucasia glimpse. so our after bishop said in his first year in philadelphia he learned the world meeting of families could be coming here to our city. but he was a touch worried. >> it was discourage, i didn't want it to happen. because i had enough complexity in my life. we didn't have any money. and i just couldn't imagine how we could become responsible for this you. >> wrote a letter, you said -- >> i said we will be happy to do it if you want to come. here are our problems, i thought for sure that would mean they would choose another city. i think six weeks, maybe two month later, i got a letter and the pope said well, we're very happy to come. we'll come to philadelphia.
7:11 am
so i changed my mind. >> well, ya. >> i had a lot of problems that i didn't see how we could see our way through this. >> so world meeting of families begins on september the 22, it was fun to walk around with him yesterday afternoon. you know, looking down, ben franklin parkway. >> they'll put up kind of monument, commemorate the pole's advice. >> i what are you looking in the. >> your suit. >> i don't know, my suit is caught on my microphone. of course our photographers, i love them, didn't tell me that my suit was up over here like this. >> maybe they were focused on the storey? >> walking next to the archbishop, my suit up like this, embarrassing myself in center city, can somebody just
7:12 am
say your suit is caught on your microphone? in the back up over here? >> maybe so folk you us dollars on what the arch bishop was saying? >> what's more important here, mike? >> what a sense of humor, too. and we were both born in kansas. >> oh, look at the ties there. >> you know his mother is native american? >> no, did i not know that. >> his dad is french canadian, that's what chaput, i said, how many times have people screwed up your last name? >> he said oh, all the time. somebody one time called him ka-put. >> chaput. >> chaput. >> well, great. can't wait to hear more about that. >> sure. >> that's okay. i'll tell you, mike, my goodness. >> the ben franklin parkway suit up over my head.
7:13 am
nobody says anything. >> well, 73 we talked about this yesterday. but, 150 years ago, yesterday, president abraham lincoln was shot by john wilkes boot. but this morning, in about ten minute, the exact time we actually passioned from that wound. >> yes, 7:22 in the morning. >> 7:22. 150 years ago. doug luzader, look at in you front of ford theater. >> that's right n front of ford theater here in washington, they had an event here last night, commemorating the moment that president lincoln was shot 150 years ago. >> this morning it will be the moment he died as you mention 7:22 a.m. look to the left there. see the whole crowd gather outside peterson house, of course, where president lincoln was brought after being shot inside the theater.
7:14 am
somber night here, under the gaze of the 16th president, crowds filled the spree leer to market the moment abraham lincoln was shot, some lighting candles, mink link with the tourists, period reenactors, who would describe the agonizing wait into the morning hours as lincoln neared death. >> everyone within his own thoughts, how this could have happened. >> to help understands what happened in the presidential box inside the theater there is year the park service gathered together the largest collection of assassination artifacts, ever assembled. the president's top hat, his brooks brothers coat, even the content of his pocket that night, and the darr inning their would end his life. but, while the story of lincoln assassination at the hands of john wilkes boot is well known, also remind you here it was all part of a larger, sinister conspiracy.
7:15 am
>> assassination of president lincoln just one of what were three planned attacks on high level government officials. john wilt, boot of course would assassinate the president, george, second assassin, would kill vice president andrew johnson, and lewis powell would kill the secretary of state, william. >> only lincoln would be killed, though. a startling turn, for nation, that had just ended it most bloody war. 150 years later, trudy, and her friend, would bring their kids here to take it all in. >> and that's an important part of history to me personally. had a chance to experience at this point. >> interesting. wreath laying ceremony later this afternoon at the statue of abraham lincoln, signing the emancipation proclamation, on kelly drive. >> so the st. joseph's history club organized the 3:45. >> also, over at the union league, sue serio, at sansom
7:16 am
and broad, basically, right? >> i got to stand by t the podium, where abraham lincoln gave his gettysburg address. >> i wonder if they'll do something at the union league? >> oh, of course. they have a picture of him in his coffin. and funeral procession. >> down broad street. >> one ooh years ago. >> incredible. >> all artifact right in there, so you don't have to go as far as washington, d.c. to see some of that, 150 years ago, okay, back to today. and back to high pollen count. true pollen, if you are suffering from seasonal allergy symptoms. that's probably what you are allergic to. tomorrow, very high, and friday, even with some rain in the forecast, snot looking goodment take your meds. 43 degrees mount pocono, 45 bet him, 44 allentown,
7:17 am
chillier morning than yesterday. weaver 48 degrees in doylestown, 49 here in the city, and it is 50 degrees in chester, pa. forty-nine in millville, and 51 in cape may. so, it is cool start to the day. see a lot of rain to the southwest of us, but we're not going to get it here. high pressure building in, and keeping that away from us, so it is all looking good for today. as we take a look back before we look ahead a we ac we made it to 44 degrees, raw, rainy, thursday wasn't any better and we've had nice rise in temperature since then, monday's high was 75, little cooler yesterday, with the rain. 63 degrees. should be up to 70 or close to it by the end of the day. and that's why it is a nine, even tomorrow, with 66 degrees, because it is right around where we are supposed to be. looks good.
7:18 am
scattered showers on friday, into saturday morning perhaps. sunday looking good, monday, maybe tuesday of next week. couple of sunny days, bob kelly, april showers, couple of more sunny days, okay, we can live through that. >> little here, little there. >> interchange, so already, delay thereon that eastbound side, westbound heavy from say the boulevard out toward belmont. good morning to chester county, live look at route 30, bypass, dealing with sun glare this morning, working your way into route 202. hello to south jersey, 295. no problems yet as you work your way south on 295 counsel toward the construction zone. do have crash in warminster, jacksonville road at bristol road. some sun glare on the turnpike, from say willow grove over toward valley forge. westbound at gladwynn, crash off to the shoulder, but the delay begins around city
7:19 am
avenue. few extra minute there, coming in toward the city then north on the freeway, your normal delay with some sun glare and volume head in the toward philly as you approach i29a airport looking good, no problems on mass transit. back to you. on twitter, reporter jenny joyce, when i said that the archbishop said i still have time to be a priest. >> right? >> she goes a priest? i think mayor is much more believable. >> and i told him, bob, anything can happen with the power of jesus. >> that's true. >> it would take that casino of power. >> you could be just what the bishop is lookinger. >> that's true. >> really, me? >> bring the catholic flock back to the church in. >> true. because you have been there. >> you could be a draw. >> i know what you are going through. >> i know the struggle. >> ma'am going to confession, okay, those of us catholic growing up. >> and i'm in the conventional box? >> and that door slides open, and it is mike.

7:24 am
to be $15 an hour, lauren, what would be wrong with that? what's the down side that far? >> and what is today? four/15. they want 15 bucks an hour, just dawned on me, by the way, the coincidence of today being tax day. the down side getting paid to $15 an hour a lot of companies can't afford it and maybe they'll layoff workers or cut back on hours or raise prizes for customers as a result. nonetheless, isn't ironic just couple of weeks ago we told that you mcdonald's was agreeing to raise wages by a dollar an hour to start? that is not enough. these work remembers saying, look, so many of us have to rely on government assistance because we make the minimum wage. they want more. they are protesting poverty today. see protests like this at mcdonald's, at dunkin' donuts, at walmarts, hundreds of cities in dozens of countries, throughout the world. >> oh, really? other countries as well? >> uh-huh, new zealand, korea, yes, about 35, 40 countries. >> i guess when you think about it a lot of these companies are international
7:25 am
companies though. >> right. >> seattle, $15 an hour, that's new, see how that affect businesses going forward. minimum wage is fine for teenagers and young people, that's fine but you can't raise a family on it. raising wages could be devastating. >> could be, could be devastating. >> could be. >> or ten years down the road we will look back and go oh, it worked out okay. >> ya, it was a good thing. >> what's the minimum wage now? >> i think 7.25 per hour federally. i think that's the federal, then different state by state. there are many measures being pushed through to try to raise t of course obama wants to raise it to over $10 per hour as well. you always see push back from corporation when is you have this type of discussion. i follow closely this seattle minimum wage story. and, you know, looking at local restaurant, and some of them decided they with going to put service fees on the
7:26 am
checks. so custom hers to pay more because they just couldn't -- the restaurant couldn't afford to pay their workers so much. others didn't notice a change. and did you guys hear about that company in seattle, it is not a fast-food company, it is a credit card processor. the ceo took some his own money and he's taking the company's profits, and he's paying every single work their at least $70,000 a year. >> wow. >> who is this guy and how fast can i -- >> his name dan price, young and single by the way. very good looking man, i know that doesn't -- >> lauren, what is wrong with you? >> just saying. i'm sorry. have that is great story. when you see a picture every dan price at gravety payment -- >> i have to gooing they will. >> what's his name again? >> young, healthy, and

7:35 am
but at the time, she had her head down, she didn't see the two stop signs. went right through them. there is advance warning stop signs too. so it was a tough thing. >> was this in the daytime? >> no, it was 11:30 at night. there was only one other vehicle behind them. there is a lot of site distance, there definately distracted driving. >> alex and i talk about this all the time. every day you can walk around philadelphia and see people texting or on their phone, still happens. >> and we've gotten the mess edge out all over the county, but they don't understand it can happen to them. i think they think they are immune to t but distracted driving doesn't discriminate. it takes everybody. doesn't matter who you are. >> you mentioned you have been getting the message out across the country watch makes you want to go out there and get the message out. >> my wife and i after nicky died we just needed to go somewhere and have some support and there wasn't anything like that around for us. we decided to start people against distract driving. basically to hip other
