8:13 am
in our cover story this morning, philadelphia's bar scene is more pop than ever so of much so one lawmaker is hoping to extend the hours that these establishments would stay open. the plan would allow the sale of alcohol beyond the 2:00 a.m. current cut offto four a.m. philadelphia businesses would have to apply for extended use permits and be charged 10 percent of the yearly fee. it's a plan that has a lot of people talking on social media. brian writes the bill on the table to have philadelphia bars open until 4:00 a.m. is hashtag big news hashtag get it done. kevin says, representative harris' bill is good legs. keeping philly bars open until 4:00 a.m. equals lots of bad decisions. he guess that one is a little bit of sarcasm. the plan has on go through harrisburg and governor wolf until it is approve. more to tell us about the proposal is the man hundred us. state representative jordan harris. good morning, sir. >> good morning.
8:14 am
> always a pressure. >> good to see you. > philadelphia, seemingly, the restaurants, entertainment seems to be thriving so why do we need to extend those hours. >> first off, this is not about your neighborhood bar. thinks a targeted approach to look at areas throughout philadelphia and throughout other municipalities in the commonwealth that could use revitalization. i'm sure many folks drive through philadelphia and they see remnants of our industry, or our industrial past, and those places are the places that we're talking about. we're not talking about neighborhoods. we're not talking about residential areas, but we're talking about these industrial parts and how do we create entertainment zones to continue to make philadelphia and municipalities across the commonwealth how do we continue to create them as world class cities. >> you heard the tweet and you saw the tweet from one of the p people whos what responding to
8:15 am
us. they said more alcohol, power hours equals more bad decisions. how do you counter that? >> well, i would respectfully disagree. i mean as a young professional myself, i think that a lot of our young professionals, more than 100,000 of them have come into the city of philadelphia between the year of 2006 and 2012. a lot of them are making smart decisions. these are young people who are educated and some of the commonwealth's world class universities from penn state to the university of penn, from millersville to mansville. these are our young people who are deciding to live here. the question becomes how do we keep them here. bill, let me be clear, this is not just a one bill approach. this is a bill that has been getting the most attention, but through my legislative career i've looked at several bills
8:16 am
that look at young professionals and how do we keep young professionals in pennsylvania. the bill that looks at some people who may have done something wrong in the past but changed their life around -- > we'll get back to that in a second. we have limited time. we'll have you back. is this about entertainment district expanding entertainment or is this about getting funds for us that need it. we can generate new revenue without increasing taxes. this is not going to cure the $2.3 billion deficit that we have in the pennsylvania budget, but it will become and asset to creating this world-class city that people are talking about. listen, bill, it's clear when you look at the list of world-class cities across this country, la, new york, san
8:17 am
diego, d.c., new orleans, they don't close at 2:00 and all i'm saying is eat neither should philadelphia. this there is a responsible way to do that that doesn't affect our neighborhoods, thats do haven't affect our communities and we should explore how to get that done. > always a pleasure to see you. tell us what you think. it's already generating a lot of discussion on social media to be a world class city. does philadelphia need to extend the hours of your bars. you can leave your comments on our fox 29 facebook page. tweet us at fox 29 philly. just make sure you use the hashtag, fox 29 weekend. we're getting a lot of comments on that one already and also about our amazing weather today. would you look at the crowd that turned out for the donor dash that's happening, the organ donor dash racing money and awareness for the awareness of organs. there are so many families that have been helped by being
8:18 am
recipients of donors. both of our chris and a whole bunch of our team members are out there. beautiful day. here's a weather question, caitlyn. >> i'm vittoria from greater philadelphia. i have golf class today. what's the weather going to be like. >> hi, vittoria, thank you so much for your question and we appreciate all of this. you can send them to us hashtag fox 29 weekend through twitter, facebook, e-mail them to us. we love to put you on the air and we love to answer your weather questions especially when the weather is good, when we have nice weather for the day which is what we'll have again this afternoon. probably not going to be a 10 like yesterday with the sunshine and the warm weather but we at least kept clear skies. the rain will arrive later tonight and early monday morning. it brought severe weather to the southern planes yesterday, probably not severe same weather in our area, but you can count on the down powers tomorrow.
8:19 am
sunday to start and clouds to roll in. in fact, we've already got some cloudier areas outside right now. the mix of sunday and clouds becoming all clouds later on. the showers by day break. then through the rest of the morning that area can northeast, look at thread, that is very heavy rain. expect some delays, ponding on the roadways, too, with all this rain. we haven't had a good soaking. most of that moves out by late afternoon. but on the take end of that is s tell, thunderstorms are possible as we head into monday night. the heavy organized rain tomorrow morning. left over showers can linger as long as tuesday morning. we hit 81 yesterday in philadelphia. so we fell back to just 56. a cool breeze expected for today, though. 63 is it for the high temperature with a mix of sunday and clouds. heavy rain on a mild monday. we clear out as we go through the rest of the week, but then
8:20 am
it's pretty chilly, temperatures only in the high 50s later on next week. > thanks, kate lane. catching a foul ball is always awesome. you catch a foul ball, you're expected about it, but the way one woman did it, you have to see. we got another ballpark where they serve up bacon because they are the iron petition. they have so much fun with it. there's a physician group that says you shouldn't have so much bacon, can you put something on the menu like broccoli. p if they put blockry on the menu, wait until you see how they're serving that one. keeping the bars open until 4:00 a.m., really, are there not enough drunk drivers killing people already? that's catherine's comment. carol goes onto say working for a popular spirits company for 11 1 # years, a wise man told me nothing good happens after 12:00 a.m. so we continue to get those comments. keep them coming, folks, we'll continue to put them on the air.

8:24 am
hi, i'm beth allen from diy with this week's around the house. jerry thomas tweets, can i fix the garbage disposal myself or do i have to call a plumber? >> if your garbage disposal isn't running properly you turn the wall switch on and it's humming, but not running, you should take tongues. never your hand because you can chop your fingers. reach down and pull that obstruction out you don't have to take the disposer out present peds the sink. blindly reach under of under it dead center. and then you can pull the obstruction out from up top. if the disposal is not running
8:25 am
at all, no noise, there's a reset button on the bottom that you can push to reset the motor. if that still doesn't work, it's time to check the circuit breaker box. flip all the switches to make sure they're locked into position and if it still fails, it's time to call your plumber. if you have a question you want answered, tweet us at hashtag fox 29 weekend. how about this, there were screams for help, a dramatic situation that's raging, firefighters break down the door, they get inside they're shocked at what they find who it was that was yelling for help. our $20 bills are dominated by men, all of them are, but coming up there's a push to put a woman on the $20 billion. >> it's about time. women are moneyy. we love this one.
8:26 am
bob kelly this week. we want to hear from you. we're getting a lot of comments about keeping the bars open late. we'll be right back. my scalp hurts. my hair hurts. this is what it can be like to have shingles. a painful, blistering, rash. if you had chickenpox,
8:27 am
the shingles virus is already inside you. 1 in 3 people will get shingles in their lifetime. well i had to go to the eye doctor last week and i have to go back today. the doctor's worried its so close to her eye. talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your risk.

welcome back, at the bottom of the hour right now, it is 8:29. there is a football player from st. joe's prep who collapsed and died during train. 15 year old ryan gill yard was practicing on the field. he was a freshman from upper darby. he was raised over to temple hospital, but he later died. in a statement st. joe's prep administrator say they were deeply saddened by this loss. they will be offering counseling for students. there are certainly many. on social media people are paying their respects. mike writes, rest in peace, ryan an upper darby boy, athlete and good student gone too soon. prayers up for ryan's parents and family. it is crazy how quickly things
8:30 am
can change. we never know when it is our time. in this segment i get to talk about bacon. who doesn't love bacon? it turns out members of the physician's exit ' and who are they exactly? they're a group of doctors, 1,000 strong who would like nothing more than to see folks stop eating this breakfast staple. the group is so serious about this that they're pushing the iron petition to give up the pork and reach for the broccoli instead. people disagree. at iron pig, yes, i can't wait to take kids and family to a game this summer, hashtag bacon and iron petition themselves. even had some fun tweeting. i don't really like bacon. five word deal breaker. let's talk about it. this idea isn't sitting too well with the iron petition manager, curt land diswho joins us via skype. also joining us is dietitian and nutritionist cameron wells.
8:31 am
good morning to both of you. >> cameron we're going to start beating up on you as the mean doctor who wants to rob us of our bacon. tell us why this is such a serious issue worth actually taking on. it is serious because a lot of americans really don't understand the risks that processed meet poses. just one serving a day equates to a 21 percent increased risk in colorectal cancer. that's really our aim with this campaign is to up the awareness. really connect people with the risks and how to make their plates healthier. the whole nature of this, it's the iron petition. ' the bacon. it's kind of the nature of what you do. how do you respond to something like this? quite honestly we think it's hawg wash. fans love their bacon and we have healthy food options and we believe in the fans' right to choice.
8:32 am
it is america. let the fans choose the food items they want. we have healthy items, if it's gluten free, grilled chicken, tush can i whatever they prefer is healthy, but certainly bacon is a healthy food choice it provides vitamins b and d and protein. from the iron pigs standpoint we think it's a healthy item. i guess that's one way to look at it. you're talking about a baseball gape. a lot of people would think that's kind of the day that you sludge, you go out there and not that concerned with healthy items. do people need to be concerned at the baseball park? >> unfortunately ' typically not just a daily sludge. we see processed meet playing in american's daily dietary patterns. so the moderation miss age really isn't so relevant. we on't see that playing out
8:33 am
when it comes to our nation's health statistics and seeing those numbers become any better. and really we wanted to promote broccoli or any helpful option from the standpoint of utilizing the same marketing approaches to promote bacon to promote than would of these healthy options. we got to wrap, but you did add broccoli. >> we listen to our fans and we did listen to others. we did add broccoli, but it comes in the form of deep fridayed bacon broccoli cheese bites. fans are excited just not the way it was probably intended to be. > we have the great bacon debate. tell us what you think. do we need to do something about the iron pigs ballpark? you can leave your message on the facebook page, you can tweet us at fox 29 philly and of course
8:34 am
use the hashtag, fox 29 weekend. a lot of fun with that one. thank you. let's take life look outside. look at all the people that came out to help with this one. we have the revolutionary run, i believe. first let's get our weather question. i am noaa and it is the best weekend ever. it is so sunny out. i am going to run. >> it is the best weekend ever. how cute is that. she did go for a run. thank you so much for the video. it is the best weekend. today maybe not as nice as yesterday. it won't be as warm, but it is still a pretty decent day. we have some clouds and then some rain which will arrive on monday morning. today it does stay dry, the runs, the kids' games, the golf game, you'll be fine. we hit 81-degrees yesterday in philadelphia. first time we were in the 80s since last september.
8:35 am
56 philadelphia 54 in millville and 52 in atlantic city. bit of an on shore wind today starting to. did high pressure moves out. when you have the on shore winds iterations in the chilly water temperatures, creates some clouds, makes it a little bit cooler. we did not have the warm day at the beaches. we won't again today. look at the winds increasing to 2 # miles an hour. 63-degrees into tonight, rain moves in late. by early monday morning you'll be seeing the early down powers. 75 and warm as the warm front pushes through tomorrow. that will bring heavy rain a monday. thunderstorms are possible again in the afternoon. a couple of showers there on tuesday. we clear out the rest of the week, but temperatures go from above average to well below. highs only in the upper 50s for the second half of the week. thanks, caitlyn. we got up to 80 yesterday. i'll take 60ss today. it's still a good day. our dollar bills are dominated
8:36 am
by men, but now there's a push to put the woman on the $20 billion. plus, you got to see a moment during a major league baseball game that you have to see to believe. it was an amazing foul ball catch and then a difficult decision to make, what do you do with that ball. unofficial pol of you out there, you're going to say a big thumb's up on the bacon. bacon, massive amounts of bacon. this one from pam, i love bake than on, can you just eat a bacon sandwich? i like my with tomato, a blt of course. a really cute dog, it happens to be my sister's dog. tucker. did someone say bacon says brian. thank you for your comments. we do love you. we don't get to everyone's comments, but we do get shoutouts to everyone. the bacon, i guess you dance it off, or something to work it out. right now we're telling you just shut up and dance.

list of possible people to put on our dollar bills and quarters and stuff. i thought that was a pretty good idea. already barbara howard had started women on 20s. a digital campaign to put a woman on the $20 bill and face out andrew jackson by the year 2020. the 1 hunt anniversary of woman's right to vote. we want to literally value women and have women value themselves and every time you hold a $20 bill and there is some -- there's a woman of this proportion on there who really raises the bar who helps us raise our own bar i think that we'll be inspired and it will be inspiring to young girls coming along as well. the campaign started with 5 iconic women in us history and now it's down to four finalists you can vote for. rosa pass,, eleanor roosevelt, tug man and roma man killer.
