tv Fox29 Weekend FOX April 26, 2015 8:00am-9:01am EDT
8:00 am
o. good sunday morning to you. it is a beautiful start to this day on this april 26th. it is arbor day so we're asking people what their favorite tree is? >> money tree maybe, tree of knowledge? i'm trying to come up with some something. >> on this sunday morning we do have so much happening. this is our top story. new from overnight we have learned there was a local connection to the natural disaster on the other side of our world. there was a doctor from new jersey who has been killed in that earthquake according to a mountain climbing team and there have been very strong after shocks continuing there in
8:01 am
nepal. >> it's a highly controversial issue, the discussion has been going back and forth for quite some time. same sex marriage. can the federal government define who you should or shouldn't be married to? the u.s. supreme court is taking on the issue and we want you to weigh in on it. >> we want to get you dressed and out the door for whatever your activities may be. let's get to our weather question. >> i'm wondering what the weather is going to be like today. >> it is going to be a really nice day today. i think we'll have a decent amount of sunshine, temperatures a little bit warmer because as you saw richard had his jacket on. it has been very chilly, unusually cold outside. outside we've got some showers towards our south. if you were in southern delaware last night you saw some briefly
8:02 am
heavy rain, it was a cloudy, drizzly rain. as we go into the afternoon it should be 5 to 10 degrees warmer depending where you're at. your fox cast today, it's sunday, we should see morning clouds erode quickly as we head into the afternoon. sun and clouds 64 degrees. we're getting closer to normal, which is 67 to 68. 45 tonight under mostly cloudy skies, overall we're looking at a nice sunday. we do have some changes during the week week, a slight chance of showers and looking at a

warm-up. karen? >> thank you so much, caitlin. we know one person is being treated at this hour after being hit by a car. this happened in bucks county overnight. this was about 2:00 a.m. right at street road and i-95 in ben-salem. no word on this victim's condition. also another accident, this one in cobb's creek. it happened just a short time ago at walnut and 52nd street. a car slammed into a minivan and took out a light. the cause of that crash is under investigation. >> we're following new developments this morning in that deadly earthquake in nepal. the death toll is continuing to rise. more than 21 people confirmed dead. one of them a doctor with local connections. a powerful after shock sends
8:04 am
people running for cover. she joins us now in the social media center. >> as you mentioned this morning we're learning big after shocks are rocking nepal. we're learning about the victims as well, including a 29-year-old from new jersey, a physician's assistant. she's from edison. her death was confirmed. she was a base confirmed doctor. she perished in the aftermath that struck the base camp area following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake. she is among the 2,100 people confirmed to have died in the earthquake. severe after shocks hindering the rescue efforts. the biggest coming in at a
8:05 am
magnitude 6.7, all of this as nations prepare emergency go teams to come help, people figuring out how to get to those remote areas that were hit. we're getting reactions from people on the ground in nepal. many of them have harrowing stories to tell. >> translator: i was at home watching tv. >> translator: i felt a vibration and thought it's in my body but when i got up i felt my body going up and down. everything was shaking. >> and of course as we see in so many tragedies, people from all over the world taking to social media to express their grief and support the people of nepal. they're using the hashtag nepalearthquake. my heart is heavy for nepal right now. and shawn writes feeling sad for people who are affected.
8:06 am
may god give strength to their families. if you have reaction tweet us, #fox29weekend. this is a developing story and we'll have much more throughout the hour. >> in a little bit closer to home, a city in turmoil, you're seeing freddie gray right there. protesters were mostly peaceful yesterday, but as splinter groups broke out, they looted stores, gray was a man who suffered a fatal spine injury while being arrested by police. gray's family stepped up to make a public plea. >> please, please, freddie gray would not want this. freddie's father and mother does not want no violence. >> police say gray should have received medical attention at the spot where he was arrested
8:07 am
before he was even put inside a police transport van. he was handcuffed in without a seat belt which is a violation of the baltimore police department's policy. >> our cover story this morning is something going to be taken up this week. the u.s. supreme court is gearing up to take on this issue of same sex marriage. can the government define marriage or should this be left up to states and the voters. lower courts have upheld and also overturn pd same sex marriage bans. the arguments are scheduled for tuesday. this is a case that's going to be very closely watched by thousands if not millions and already has so many people talking talking and there are divicive lines on this. but father john has a different belief. just like abortion, even if the supreme court makes same sex
8:08 am
marriage illegal. it will be 100 percent immoral. respect life. >> good morning. >> this is going to be extremely closely watched. how do we think this is going to be set up? we know this court at this point, what do we think that they're first going to be tackling when they deal with this issue? >> it comes down to a constitutional issue, karen. and it's the 14th amendment. we have certain fundamental right. if this court decides marriage is a fundamental right. they're likely to decide marriage bans are unconstitutional. if marriage is a right just generally, then what age does one allow that right to be married and could it go to poligamy and different issues. the other way they can decide is under equal protection. that everyone should have the same rights as those who are heterosexual.
8:09 am
that is probably the way that they will lean in this case. >> do we have any clues as to how they may rule on this one? >> justice kennedy tends to be the swing vote, we saw with the defensive marriage act back a couple of years ago that it was decided in favor of homosexuals, so there is the likely chance that that will happen again. it is going to be very difficult for the court to draw a fine line as to how exactly they want to decide this case. because in the past marriage has always been up to the states. >> isn't that one of the arguments that a lot of people are making at this time, let's leave this up to the states and the other side would say we don't want to have a tyranny of the majority. >> there's four states that are arguing this. michigan, kentucky, ohio and tennessee. and they're making the argument
8:10 am
that if we left it up to the states, within 10 years every state would make this decision and let the voters do that. i think that's what the supreme court had in mind but it's not happened fast enough for most people. the majority of americans believe that same sex marriage should not be held unconstitutional and that's why it's come back so quickly to the supreme court. >> this will be very, very closely watched and we will be monitoring the developments on this one. >> let us know what you think about this issue. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> a local football star with a promising future, gunned down in a tragic shooting. >> plus a new way to get around town. have you seen this? this is so cool. check it out. take us for a ride, see how it works, what do you think? he brought his selfie stick. he's going to show you how that
8:14 am
and killed saturday morning. he was a great kid about to graduate. he had walked to a nearby store with his friend who witnessed the whole thing. parents who have enrolled their children at the blue bell location are being asked to go to the school tomorrow morning between 7:00 and 10:00 to clean out the students' cubbies.
8:15 am
>> we're going to take a look at the weather. but as we do that, caitlin, we're taking a look at old city. i was at an event last night and i ran into one of the parents whose son sent us a weather video. they're telling us their 3-year-old walks around the house pretending to do the weather. and every time the news comes on tells the family turn to fox 239 because that's what you should be watching. >> i love it start them at a young age. so for the most part it is a day where we'll see a mix of sun and
8:16 am
clouds, more probably in the afternoon. a couple of clouds pop up later today. there is a small chance for a sprinkle north and west. we start off with some sunshine on monday again. it looks like also a nice day, just with that northwest flow, a light shower also possible. overall really pleasant weather and also warmer weather out there. 44 in allentown, 46 in pottstown, 67 in millville. so a little warmer than we were were yesterday. 60 degrees at first pitch temperature, light winds out of the north northeast. with that sun shining down on you it will feel warmer than the 60s, which will rise to 64. sunny and nice, really just a great looking april afternoon. for tomorrow a slight chance of a shower but it looks similar. then we see a bit of a warming trend as we go through the next
8:17 am
couple of days. 70 back in sight on wednesday. chance of a thunderstorm even on thursday. rain looks likely on friday but we clear out to the weekend and there are some signs of very warm temperatures as we head into next weekend. you see that 71 on saturday but we can be well into 71 into the first weekend in may. >> thank you so much. and pj thank you for sharing with us. he said can we have some fun, people? it's national kids and pets day. >> pictures come in, kids and pets make you smile. >> it's a great time to go out biking with your kids, maybe biking around your city. >> philly has a new bike share program, it's called indigo. we went for a ride and tested it
8:18 am
out. >> reporter: we're here and see all the new bikes, i got a chance to experience them. what do you think so far? >> i really liked it. i tried them a couple of weeks ago when they had their launch party and i felt like they were stable. but i enjoyed the experience. >> reporter: the concern when i was out driving around, one they're kind of heavy, like little old school. the other one some people said $4 for a half hour is a little high. what do you say? >> that rate is mostly geared toured tourists. there are much lower rates if you feel like you're going to be using it often. if this is something you're going to be using every day you don't have to pay the $4 for every ride and that is a lot cheaper than what they offer in boston, dc and new york. >> new, your friends, the website, you're not tourists, you're all about philly. do you think your peers will use this? >> absolutely. what they've done, they've put
8:19 am
them in areas that are convenient for people. their goal is to put them in more low income areas so all people can use. i think they've done a good job implementing where these are going. >> reporter: we've got some tweets. i'm kind of excited for philly bike share now i don't have to walk blocks and blocks at a time to get to the subway. >> people are excited to just to take this a few blocks or they can have it for an hour and take it to work. i'm hearing people are excited to be able to use it to get short distances. >> reporter: i'm super excited about the bike share program. again, so far so good. >> the name was a little bit of a surprise to us as well. but it's sponsored by independence blue cross. >> have you seen those bike riders in philly, they like to
8:20 am
squeeze through traffic. no helmets required in philadelphia. is that a concerned? >> it's incumbent on bicyclists and drivers to look out for each other on the road. yes, there are some cyclists that blow through red lights all the time but there are drivers who aren't looking closely enough. there are safety concerns, we worry about the infrastructure in philly, can it handle a much larger influx of bike riders and only time will tell. >> we appreciate you spending time for us. sounds good. >> sounds good. >> tweets and comments continue to come in and to wrap it all up, there's one last tweet that came from john, he said as a whole philly car drivers don't respect bike lines and pedestrians don't watch out for bikers. so john seems to think this whole thing is going to be a

fishtown and they don't provide helmets. not a good idea. let's take a look at what's happening technology-wise. >> samsung just recently released the s 6 and the s6 edge. awesome highly anticipated phones. these new phones, no memory stick. you can't add memory or detach the battery. but samsung has done cool things. the screen is absolutely beautiful and the picture, 16 megapixel, the best on the market. if you want to charge your phone, you can do it wirelessly by putting it on a wireless charger, or if you're on the go with an authorized cable, 10 minutes of charging will give you four hours of battery life. one need thing, if you want to

8:30 am
>> the victim is in critical condition right now. new developments surrounding an all-out brawl inside a septa station. police have arrested this man in connection with the fight that mostly involved students. the 18-year-old was taken into custody early saturday morning and faces several charges. the fight happened tuesday at the spring garden station at the broad street line. police expect to make more arrests in the near future. >> let's get a check of our forecast on this sunday morning. so many events happening. i just saw mike and alex speaking about this. we have so many ms walks. there's one going on today at
8:31 am
10:00. scott and iaian page will be out there if you want to join those guys at 10:00 this morning. >> look at that beautiful view of the poconos. it looks like all the snow has finally melted, here on april 26th, although it's been a cold few days. we've had snow showers the past couple of mornings. nice weather returning, it's beautiful for anything you have planned. all the sports activities, races and walks are fine. we are going to see temperatures get a little bit warmer into the 60s. ultimate doppler showing the showers passing towards our south, low pressure yesterday which brought severe weather to the tennessee valley, rain to parts of washington, baltimore and southern delaware is now exiting. leftover clouds will dissipate as we go through the morning. we're seeing some sunshine out here in old city philadelphia. we should be milder as we go through the afternoon. 44 in allentown, 46 in pottstown where you'll see more sunshine
8:32 am
north and west today. sunny and nice, a slight chance of a shower on monday. 67 tuesday, 71 wednesday before a chance of showers. we clear out and warm back up by next weekend. >> in your health this morning, are you still trying to shake that winter weight? how can you burn more calories? it's a struggle. take a look at all the tweets out there. nothing like trying on clothes to affirm you've gained weight over the winter. winter weight is the worse. spring, when you realize how close summer is and how much weight you didn't lose in the winter. let's bring our medical team in this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so we've got -- >> this winter weight is a tough one. >> it is. and you've got four simple
8:33 am
tricks for us. what can we do? >> yes. it's funny, because when we talk about boosting our metabolism, you think we're going to talk about what we eat, which we will. i talked to an obesity medical doctor, we have to think about how much we're sleeping. sleep is very important to our body's functions. here's what happens. sleep affects your hormone levels, we have a hormone that tells us when we're full, and when we're not getting adequate sleep, about 7 hours a night if possible, those hormones get out of whack. the other thing to think about, besides food and what you're eating is your exercise. and you know from health class in sixth grade that muscle burns more calories than fat. we start to lose muscle mass as we get older. even if you're sitting down on the couch, if you have more muscle, you're going to be burning more calories. you have to either lift weights
8:34 am
at the gym, do some push ups. >> got to get enough sleep, got to get enough working out. now what can i eat? what's the food that's going to help boost my metabolism? >> lean protein is one of them. the idea is that your body can easily use that to convert it into energy. that's the idea. so i've got beans here. again, your body easily converts this stuff into energy. that's your metabolism. and we have green tea. it has a compound in it that nutritionists really like. so this can help boost your metabolism and some lemon, sometimes the taste is not great to me and this has lemon in it and this is pretty good.
8:35 am
i have one more metabolism trick. if you take your body weight in pounds, multiply it by 10, and if you're a woman by 11, that gives you the number of calories. >> get out of here. >> you don't like that number? >> i don't like to do all the things. the thing i'm taking away, i'm going to drink my green tea. dina, thank you so much. >> that's a good first step. all right. we're trying to obviously get in better shape for the summer. let us know what's going to work for you. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> nicely done, karen. baby stepping into fitness. we all know how important it is to give back. but a group of kids in chester are taking the task to a new level. what they did to make sure school days are a little
8:36 am
brighter for students they don't even know. plus imagine building your million dollar dream home, one couple's dream is literally sinking in. the comments are coming in. >> thank you for reminding us it's national kids and pets day. this is her family pet snacking off the husband's head. how cute is that? thank you, will. this adorable one. i love this one. we also got -- look at this. keep sending in your pictures and your comments. we'll be right back.
8:39 am
welcome back at 8:39. this is an annual event filled with celebrity watching and news people. last night in washington, d.c., we're talking about the annual white house correspondents' dinner. about 2,600 people attended the event. mike jerrick usually goes. reporters, politicians, other insiders down there in the
8:40 am
beltway. of course president obama was there and he got quite a few laughs from the crowd, especially when he started talking politics. >> let's face it. there is one issue on every reporter's minds and that is 2016. already we've seen some missteps, it turns out jeb bush identified himself as hispanic back in 2009. i understand. it's a mistake. it reminds me when i identified myself as american back in 1961. >> this dinner has been held for about 100 years and all the proceeds go to charity. we know somebody who knows how to take a joke or a comment. howard eskin. >> time now for knocking the king. >> hey howard, i heard this is what you had to say about
8:41 am
college athletes. >> i love when the schools call the players student athletes. really? it's time schools find ways to help the students financially that need the money to get an education, not feed the monster of greed by the athletes. >> the payment should be deferred contingent upon graduation. there's too much money being made in college sports and the athletes should be prospering. >> did you take a long time to kind of come up with that? deferred? that's what they don't want. athletes, student athletes, say that they need the money while they're in college playing, because they don't have enough time to get a job. it's ridiculous. did athletes forget about the $60,000 a year in tuition that they're getting for free? that's over $200,000. if they stay four years, which they never do, because they want

>> the trial is scheduled to begin tomorrow. he opened fire inside a packed movie theater back in july of 2012 killing 12 people and jirg 70 others. the jurors were chosen from an initial poll of 9,000 people. his attorneys insist he was in the middle of a psychotic episode and is not guilty by reason of insanity. it is the prosecution that must convince the jury that holmes was sane. this is in texas. the homeowners have a million house crumbling and sinking. officials say years of winds and rains have battered that home and now it's on the verge of collapse. >> their dream house or retirement house is literally coming down around their ears. >> fire officials and engineers
8:46 am
expect the house to come crashing down at any minute. the homeowners have been forced to leave the home. >> we say it every week. it's among our favorite segments here on fox 29 weekend. everyone loves it because we bring in the talented junior reporters. very talented individuals from around the area. good morning, how huh? >> i'm fantastic. >> it's just a really heartwarming story to see how children can help other children that no matter how big or small you are, you can really make a big difference. >> i think i'm going to be really happy that we decided to come to their school and help them out. >> reporter: kids helping other kids. that's what went on here in chester, a sturdy, clean and safe school. but due to limited resources,
8:47 am
the hall ways lacked color and deck rartion. >> we're doing it to help the hall ways look a little bit nicer. >> dozens of children took it into their own hands to beautify the school, turning the dark hall ways into beautiful works of art making the school seem warmer and more welcoming. >> it's a great experience. the kids are here from the hicks foundation giving back to the community. i think it's important for the students to understand that service is a way of life. >> reporter: the project began with the hicks foundation. >> we really wanted to honor his life by creating where the kids from his high school could serve and the kids from chester could get some new opportunities. >> reporter: it teaches kids the importance of giving back to their community, allowing them to see all the good that comes
8:48 am
from it. >> it helps other kids to give at the school and it's something nice to do. >> just looking at the video, you see they made a tremendous difference at the school. how did you hear about this? >> andrew was one of my friends in high school and that's how i got involved with the foundation. but it's just a positive organization and they do a lot of great things for these students. if anyone at home would like to volunteer, just go to the foundation for more information. >> we'll put the link up on our website. >> and if you like the stories, you always say that you do, give us some more ideas. we'll send the junior reporters out, they'll come to you, you can tweet us, you can leave your ideas up on our facebook page, just always use the hashtag #fox29weekend. >> take a look at our weather. i know what a lot of you are doing. you are walking in so many
8:49 am
different places. the last thing, sesame place, families that autism, going to be open to them as well. >> sesame place one of the many wonderful places to go. >> it is arbor day. everything is blossoming. it looks beautiful. finally turning a page on the winter and we start to see everything bloom. it's just confirmation that it looks so much better. but it has been chilly. showers will move out, clouds will give way to a lot of our sunshine and will be a little bit warmer. 41 in the poconos, 47 in
8:50 am
millville and 46 in dover so it is still a cool morning but by the time we hit afternoon we should see 60s. 60 degrees at first pitch we should rise into the mid 60s by the time we hit the ninth inning. when the sun is out it will feel even warmer. seven-day forecast, 64 sunny and nice today, a slight chance of a shower, but it's a really slight chance. overall a good day. 63 degrees. we slowly warm up to the middle part of the week, 70s by wednesday. chance of a thunderstorm thursday, rain friday and looking warmther and nice as we head into next weekend. >> classic scenes from classic movies. showing teenagers drinking, smoking or using drugs.
8:51 am
even having james bond making martinis look cool. are you surprised that researchers believe watching this is actually encouraging teenagers to drink more. it sounds like a no-brainer, but the brains at the university of bristol in england set out to study it. in their new study in the journal of pediatrics, they talked to 5,015-year-olds. they found young people were 70% more likely to drink themselves. it's not shocking and may seem like a silly study. but parents need to be smart. >> i think we should take this study seriously. it illustrates the fact that parents need to educate their children, especially their teens, on the pros and cons of things like alcohol and smoking. if you are watching a james bond
8:52 am
movie and seeing how romanticized drinking the martini is, you need to also tell your children that it can lead to alcoholism and if you drink too much, you're going to have problems like a hangover. >> reporter: so maybe you relive your youth watching "risky business" with your own teenagers and follow dr. mike's advice to have a talk with your kids about what they're seeing on the screen.
8:55 am
>> welcome back. the pictures continue to come in. look at this. i told you, karen. any time you say dogs and kids, here they come. >> happy sunday from max. look at that one. all the dogs and kids, that's a combination watching us and this one is a big dog but a best friend. >> look at the baby. >> the dog was so big i didn't see the baby. >> there's nothing like that combination, kids and pets. >> we also want to wish a big happy birthday shout out to our philly fanatic. we had a really fun celebration today. he's going to be out there at the ballpark, this afternoon. i think it's a 1:00 game. happy birthday! we absolutely love you.
8:56 am
