day to still make some good points out of it. >> unbelievable work by the camera folks by nascar on fox. we thank you for all they are doing. long day for ty dillon. >> jeff gordon made a great point. the crew chief told me before the race we want to win. but if something happens we're not in position to win we have to maximize the day and the points from a championship perspective. just as jeff was saying. he took damage to the left front on that hit. hood brace on the left side is broken and the hood is buckled up a bit so they have to tend to that left front issue. lot of debris on the grill. they are doing a lot of work on that left front and hood area on the left side of the car as well. >> he's only finished outside of the top ten twice this year. really hasn't had big problems at all in races. that's why he came in as the championship leader. between model of consistency. they had their fair share of issues today. >> certainly have. from looking at that car, jeff, and knowing how important the
5:31 pm
draft is you get it taped up and parts flying off of it he could still charge up to a top five finish. >> he could be fine from a speed standpoint. all those cars in front of them are punching a big hole. aero dynamics won't matter until he makes that move for the win or to go to the front. i don't think he'll be able to jump into that outside lane and drive up there like he may have because that car is going be pretty dirty in the air with some of that damage. no doubt in my mind he can get behind some other cars or go to the middle lane and shoot to the front. >> 25 cars on the lead lap. some traffic. 14 to go under caution. we give you our hisense most of race. log leading the event. here's our hisense move of the race. a little inside, a little outside, a little horsepower puts the 22 in the lead late at talladega. that's just bold. that's making a move. he decided he would go for it
5:32 pm
all in that very straightaway. what an amazing job. >> i thought elliott sadler did exactly what you have to do when you know that that car is making that move you move down to the bottom to block it. unfortunately darrell wallace jr. saw the momentum with the 22 car and said i'm going with the momentum. >> joey logano won this race in 2011. one of the five wins for joe gibbs racing. that's the most all time. he's driving the 18 car on saturday afternoon today following the 22 for the captain roger penske and doing a nice job. one of the drivers we're talking about tomorrow one of those doing double duty. when you talk about drafting. driving that 22 tomorrow trying to get his second checkered flag of the year. live coverage begins at 12:30 here on fox begin your day with race day on fox sports 1, 11:30 eastern time. we got you covered live in talladega, alabama.
5:33 pm
i look at this weekend and we felt like the last few weeks on the short tracks was an opportunity for those teams not running well at the intermediates to get their shot kind of a more balanced playing field if you will. >> take advantage of that. we've been off on some of the intermediate tracks. we want to take advantage of that fast race car at this point. >> singing the praises of joey logano. elliott sadler trying to go back-to-back. >> earlier we heard joey logano was warned by nascar about connecting to the bumper in front of him. now over this past run aric almirola in the 98 was having issues with elliott sadler in the 1 because sadler kept dragging his brake trying to
5:34 pm
drag himself back to connect to aric almirola. aric almirola kept having to drag his brakes and wouldn't connect and he said ask nascar what am i supposed to do when he's dragging his brake. i'm doing all i can and wearing out mine. so should be interesting if that happens again, if they line up together for the restart. >> i love that communication. it's so true. you know you think of the speed coming from drafting the car in front of you. but in cal, you know, the real way this happens and the momentum, the speed it happens from behind. so there's a pocket of air behind that car that's pushing you, but if your bumper can reach their rear bumper it's even another burst of speed. but the speed really comes from that car taking the air offer the rear spoiler which lessens the drag. you want to maximize both of those things. nascar doesn't want to you
5:35 pm
maximize the bumping. >> he's doing what he has to do to win this race and aric has to deal with it. nascar won't be a party to that either. that's who racers on their own agenda are doing everything they can to get the victory. >> this goes back to something you said michael. it's not that you can't bump it's you got to do it perfectly. you got to bump come back off the car, bump, come back off the car. that's what i would do if i was aric almirola, maximize that bumping without pushing or connecting for too long of a period of time. >> let's see what regan smith has to say. we said we would call him out. regan, it's michael and jeff up in the fox booth. you got a second for us. >> 908 and 2 on the top. yeah i got you michael. >> i appreciate it. we wanted to check in. you put yourself in a position to win this race after nearly
5:36 pm
being wrecked on lap two. how are you feeling about the scramble to the finish? >> i feel like it's got to be a scramble. things always get wild here at the end of these races and it's done that today. so hopefully we got rid of the magnet and let somebody else borrow and stay up here and race and hopefully get a trophy. >> regan, this is jeff. you're in the top five. you're in a pretty good position. you know pretty well how to get it done here on the final lap. do you think you can do it here again today? >> yeah. i think we got a car capable of doing it if track position is the biggest factor if i can get it to where i have an opening. then we should be able to make a move. i see a lot of fords up there so we'll try to get these guys lined up ahead of me. >> not taking up too much time. one last thing.
5:37 pm
we've seen a lot of pushing. how do you manage that you can push and connect with the car in front of you? >> that's a good question because i honestly don't know some of the things i seen i thought was pretty aggressive from a push standpoint. but, you know if you beat as hard as you can and i guess -- i don't want to be the one to force them to make a call. let me put it that way. >> some have taken full advantage of that. we wish the best. go get them in these final laps. >> thanks much >> regan smith in the season opener at daytona. had problems in bristol when he was going top ten maybe top five car. despite that he's gone on a nice climb points and has an opportunity to make a statement today. he's in a category with chris buescher. chris running third has been so good at plate racing. was a runner up at daytona. a runner up here a year ago. when you look at ty dillon and chase elliott he could end up with a lead. >> we're stack up theses against
5:38 pm
the chevys. and you would think joe gibbs racing toyotas would be the story. j.j. yeley and david starr are the first pair of toyotas that are going to try to take down the and chevies. regan smith realizes that he's got some chevies around him. be interesting how long they play that game because you know they are looking out for number one mainly. >> i was going to say they are going to play that right until the green flag drops which will not be a final restart. it's great to have manufacturers working together. you know drivers are aware of it and they want to do all they can. but at this point it's how can we work together to get a good restart to get ourselves in position. once it comes down the final lap, you know it doesn't matter what logo is on your hood or what's under the hood it's all about trying to get that win. >> this is the ultimate story of david very goliath in nascar
5:39 pm
racing. those two toyotas right there are certainly up against some of the best teams in all of nascar with the roush-fenway cars and junior motorsports all the guys that are racing. >> i think a lot of guys we thought would be in the mix for this thing to close it out and be a contender for the win here it's shaping up to be a heck of a finish. >> perfect guy to start with. log race leader. been here five times. average finish 2.0. is he the favorite? >> i'm taking buescher. i said when i came up here i like buescher. he's in a great position. hard to beat those two that are in front of him but i think he can do it. >> elliott sadler was crashed on lap two and found himself back in contention. i think he'll inspired and elliott sadler wins this race. i can't wait to watch this stuff that happens between now and then. one thing about 22 car he was the fastest car. able to push j.j. yeley to the front. 22 is the favorite bust i'm
5:40 pm
fueling for sadler. >> who is the aggressive guy that will help him. >> what's the over-under on cautions. we had a lot of green-white checkers. could see it again today. >> crew chief of elliott sadler, still less than five laps into the race. you guys were repairing damage. now you have a chance to win. how due describe the day. >> a roller coaster ride. just misjudgment by elliott's part but able to bounce back. fought hard here at the end. >> how confident are you for this car. >> we had good speed. depends on who gets a run. who don't. you block. don't block. it's up to elliott and the spotter now. >> we look forward to it. >> heck of a finish. let's look at the top ten as we anticipate the green flag in a couple of laps. joey logano leads. elliott sadler is second. chris buescher, aric almirola regan smith the top five. then brian scott, landon
5:41 pm
cassill j.j. yeley, david starr and joey gase the final car in the top ten. heard from him on our xfinity race day pre-race, a great story, good young man and an opportunity for a career best at talladega. >> you know when i thought about this opportunity for me coming up here for my final race with you guys i felt talladega is so cool. so many different story line. why die underestimate the number of story lines. the points implication. ty dillon has a great opportunity here to bounce back. we got buescher up there that has a great opportunity to make up some points on these guys. the different incidents that have happened on the track. the bump drafting. >> the underdog stories. >> underdog stories. >> landon cassill, j.j. yeley, david starr all inside the top ten. what about joey gase down in the tenth spot. so many wonderful stories and
5:42 pm
those guys like gase, j.j. yeley this might be their best chance to win of their career and they just want it so bad and push so pardon to the so. >> this is their opportunity. they know this is their chance to shine and they will take advantage of it and be super aggressive to get that done and by the way there's nine to go. it's not over by any means. >> i think we can put this up to about three, three laps sprints. >> i'm quite comfortable we'll see at least one green-white checkered before this thing is over. >> jeff seven of the last ten races here for the nascar xfinity series did have overtime ending in a green-white checkered finish and keeping tans on the man whoa had the championship lead coming in, ty dillon restart in the 24th position. he's on the lead lap. 25 cars on the lead lap. we'll go green with eight laps to go. >> i've seen that 3 car do that before. >> that's exactly right.
5:43 pm
fromle 18 lethe 18th. >> kenny wallace is out of the race. he can't push him. >> fun to watch the 3 trying to come through and gain all the points and positions he can. >> you'll see him go for every gap he can find. up the middle, outside, inside. >> gas start for elliott sadler. getting a good push from aric almirola. >> on these restarts you basically have to push the guy in front of you coming up through the gears. i don't think nascar is going to call that. i think it's really more once they get up to speed that they are really looking for. >> this is where the spotter becomes so critical. >> clear. he's clear. both clear. all clear. >> how good did that work out for sadler. >> amazing. >> four fords in a row on the inside lane. >> regan smith acknowledge those
5:44 pm
fords. >> replay of our hisense most of the race. he said i can move around you draft help or not. this time he's gelting a push from brian scott in outside lane. designee found the right guy. we found how aggressive he was pushing earlier. >> austin dillon, made them three wide. drove up to the back of brian scott. scott has a fast chevy. he'll fiduciary that ford that we know will roll of joey logano. this thing is getting really interesting. >> what we're seeing inside lane is way more organized. it's really all about whether these guys can stay connected as you see them pull apart. that inside lane is definitely going to gain some momentum until the 22 gets connected again. >> talk about organization. the 1 and 98 have been on the same page since the restart. >> i mean other than being related from a manufacturer there's no team relation. so i think that aric almirola
5:45 pm
really just trying to get himself in position to make that move on the final lap. >> he's not nervous. this is crazy. these guys are so desperate. they know they got to make a move. sitting back there sfep or eighth you're not going win. you got to make a move. you got to pass. >> ty dillon is trying to make some moves. we under he'll try to take every bit of momentum key and make something work and help cars get organized on the outside. man, i'll be surprised if he can come from that third lane on the outside with that damage. >> he's gone from 24 toth 14th since the restart. even if he can't get up there and contend for the win he's thinking about points and an opportunity to pick up a number of positions here. designee just needs somebody up ahead of him to pull out then he can pull up on them. he's making up some good ground. >> starting to happen. look at this big run. possibly going to get a chance to get up there. maybe not quite to j.j. yeley. >> what about earnhardt in the 55. >> and the 97 of peyton sellers
5:46 pm
right behind him. >> oh, man. this is exciting racing right here. i'm surprised they've gone as long as they have without a crash. so this thing is going to just continue to heat up. >> what about earnhardt pushing the 3 president up on the top side. making good ground. >> you can't make these story lines up. i love see earnhardt pushing the 3. i want to see those two brothers at childress racing and the power they have i think they can really make some moves. >> how abouting the fact richard childress racing never won in the xfinity series at talladega. >> did richard build the engine? [ laughter ] >> behind you. a lot more help on the bottom. three cars on the top. >> boy looking like a different race. a whole bunch of people running at the top. >> three and a half to go.
5:47 pm
>> i love what these spot doers at these races. they have such a tough job. so much pressure on them. so much information that is there that they need to give. they need to give those drivers everything. the information you have the better choice can you make. >> clear. you're clear. 98 is clear. >> what i like to see elliott do here -- >> you can he take advantage. >> different package here in the xfinity series versus the cup series. seems like they are able to get some bigger runs where in the cup series you can block the outside lane and inside lane as the leader. >> whoa behind scott aggressive move there. thought he might have a shot guesting inside the 22 but just didn't work out. >> scott pushed the 22 around the outside. goes to the bottom. >> he better be a little careful doing too much pushing. getting up too far can also really kind of catch up with
5:48 pm
you, where the cars can really get a big run on you if you get too far out there. >> we saw that at daytona jeff. brad keselowski on the last lap got about ten car lengths over ryan reed. chris buescher got behind reed. they went around keselowski so fast he didn't know if he was coming or going. >> you have to drag the brake in those situations and keep the gap between you and the car behind you from getting too big. that's not natural to drag the brake at that point. elliott sadler getting a huge push from buescher. got to go inside of scott. two laps to go. got to be careful. you can't go below the double yellow line. that's out of bounds. >> my opinion, scott forced below the yellow line. i'm curious how they call that. >> what a move by sadler. can't get off the gas. >> sadler is getting aggressive pushes from aric almirola. you can see that car wiggling. in that situation the car is barely underneath you. you're just working the wheel trying to follow the back of the
5:49 pm
car. >> what about chris buescher coming into contention. >> candy for everybody. >> keep in mind the start-finish line here at talladega not right here in the middle of the tri-oval. you have to get through turn one. one lap to go. >> oh, my gosh. >> last six races we had a last lap pass for the win. >> what a race. >> they were basically tied. let's call it another one. >> you can see how aggressive they are getting with the pushing right now. those cars are basically all tandem pushing and they know. they got nothing to lose. final lap. >> three fords and a chevrolet up front. outside of the 60 is chris buescher looking for his second career win and his first on a restrictor plate track. down low joey logano looking for his second victory at talladega. >> elliott sadler down there. he might -- oh yeah.
5:50 pm
log. >> oh no. >> three wide. joey logano going to get away. checkered flag is out. joey logano wins at talladega! >> what a race. >> good job, man. >> yes. >> excellent move by joey logano to move up and block that outside lane. buescher had a shot of getting to the inside or outside of him. looked like he had to check up just a little bit too much make that move. >> you have to be perfect to win one of these things. that was a perfect lap for joey logano. that late move to block the momentum from the high side it knocked him out of control. he was sideways for a bit. >> man! it's intense. can you imagine being inside that car and what all is going on knowing you're about to crash any second or win the race. >> take us through the final
5:51 pm
lap, guys. >> joey committed to the bottom and got a great pusher in elliott sadler. what a run, austin dillon and chris buescher get on the hype side. great move by buescher. he tries to halt their momentum. >> i thought that was the move that was going twrains. if you get to the right side that quarter panel that spoiler of the car on the inside line you get a huge momentum amount of momentum that shoots you ahead of their car. buescher gets aggressive. tries to get to the corner of 22. makes contact with elliott sadler. elliott and 22 become disconnected and joey did an awesome job right there. he recognized they were becoming disconnected and 60 was going to have the momentum. he moved up and made the block. >> the feel good story. joey gase all the way to the top five on the last lap. amazing run by that young man. >> a day he'll never forget. j.j. yeley in the top five. and ty dillon who came in with a
5:52 pm
championship lead, restarted 24th drove his way into the top ten coming home in the eighth position. so many stories to tell you about. and most of them focused on joey logano who is a winner at talladega. behind every open heart... is a story. a story about finishing the race... no matter what the obstacles. about rebuilding the bond between a mother and a daughter. or about helping build homes for others... because you remember what it felt like... not to have one. when you keep an open heart, amazing things happen. that's what the open hearts rhythm collection at kay jewelers is all about. the constant motion of the diamond catches light from every angle. keep your heart open... ...and love will always find its way in. every kiss begins with kay.

what a day at talladega. for the nascar xfinity series. so happy to bring to it you on fox and look at our tracker here. the difference in speed when you're getting a shove in the draft. at one point the difference reached five miles per hour. that ended upping the difference in the race. >> you can see the seesawing going on. those guys are glued to one another. buescher could have stayed to the right rear of the 22 this would have been a different race. right there the 22 and 1 become disconnected. joey makes a great call to move up. give joey logano tremendous amount of credit. yeah, he led every lap when we went somewhere in bristol and just crushed them. but yet you come here and it's a totally different discipline and here he is doing another fantastic job in victory lane. >> 24th career victory for log. let's go to victory lane now. >> second career win here at
5:56 pm
talladega. the first one in penske. joey, you drive to the outside. you drive to the front. you just pulled it open and own it. how do you that at talladega? >> that was crazy. my spotter he's on it. we spent a lot of time before talladega to figure out these super speedways and we watched more footage before we came down here to understand the different between talladega and daytona. so cool because it's such like a combination of the old school draft and cars hooking up and bumping. kind of a combo of what's going on out there. so intense. i'm trying to catch my breath. so intense out there. your mind is looking at everything in the mirror the hold time. so cool to get to victory lane. our pit coach, his dad passed away this week. we know he's driving with us. >> joey logano wins at
5:57 pm
talladega. matt? >> another one of those drivers in that crazy mess, the run to the finish was austin dillon in the 33. take us on a ride through your windshield what you saw as you were trying to get up to the front and make a run for the finish. >> the top line broke apart. the 60 ran up in front. i knew the 2 would be coming. i didn't know he that big of a run. i wish i knew that. but it was heck of a race. we had a good car. got to ride and made it through the wrecks. i told jeff gordon we'll try to make something happen for him. it was exciting for him. i cut my wrist on the steering wheel. i was bearing down on it pretty good. thanks to everybody who helped back at the shot. >> top shelf effort by austin dillon. >> his best finish to this point is 25th and today he finishes fifth. joey gase gave us a thrill. thrilling to watch. how was it to be in the driver's seat at the end? >> insane.
5:58 pm
i was hoping to get to the end. we're getting beat all around. so many wrecks going on every where. we almost got involved in all of them. worked my way back up. to get where sponsorship is for the whole year with a top ten in one race. so show what we can do. i love it. i got to thank fox donations for my mom. everyone teaming up with us. and i just hope this will show people what we can do and maybe we can get a big corporate sponsor on us and help us do this every week. >> joey gase worth the support. a victory for the little guy. he finishes fifth. let's go matt. >> what a wild run for brian scott. you were sixth coming out of turn two. how did you get this 2 car to second? >> first off everybody at rcr, this was a fast car.
5:59 pm
it seemed like the ford had more speed than us but proud of our effort. i have to thank everybody that comes on board that helps us. i wanted it to bad. then the top 4 broke away they were pushing each other. i couldn't quite get there. off of turn four i got a huge run when they elevated or whatever. j.j. yeley, the 28, me and aric almirola worked hard all day together. just got a good shover and went to the outside and tried to make something happen. but your second sheer by far best restrictor plate finish. these things snake bite me. i'll take it. real proud of our guys. coming home in one piece. solid run and thanks tomb that supports us. >> second again. >> what an unbelievable finish for j.j. yeley climbing out of the car and saying i'm still shaking. he was seventh a year ago. finished fourth. how do you describe those last couple of laps?
6:00 pm
>> nerve-racking. the 28 toyota was good on the outside. horrible on the bottom. through the green flag it went 24 toth 10th. felt i was going to be a hero. the more we ran i got stuck on the bottom. in got discouraged and worried but got back to the outside got to push brian scott and they are coming to the tri-oval i had a huge head of steam and was trying to find a way to get to a clean lane. couldn't get it. came in fourth with these guys is huge, great finish. so good day. we'll see what we do tomorrow. >> great showing for j.j. yeley. >> vince six cautions in today's race and scariest our third. number of drivers coming down pit road, brendan gaughan, you see here colliding with the pit sign holder of the 98 of aric almirola. two pit crew members were hurt on that 98 team. one of them taken to the infield care center and released. another take
