downtown. mining, alex, back to you. >> bob, 7:31, colored to go usa today, half million people were sent to the hospital or sent to the hospital a year for injuries related to exercise equipment. >> a half million people get hurt, die, at gyms, using exercise equipment. as you know, the most famous casey think in years. ceo of that website, survey monkey, died after he collapsed on a treadmill. they're vacationing down in mexico when it happened. >> facebook coo cheryle sandberg posted emotional tribute to her late husband dave goldberg. sandberg uses social media sight to thank friends and family for their love and support. she closed her tribute by saying things will never be the same, but the world is better for the years that he lived. >> let's bring in doctor mike to talk about it, doctor mike, things that we are doing that we shouldn't be doing while on treadmill? >> reporter: with me is bill the manager here at sweat fitness in old city.
7:33 am
i want to look like him some day. but the bottom line is that getting on a treadmill, can be dangerous, and even life threatening, and michael, we think what happened was is that this poor gentleman actually fell off the treadmill, and injured his head. and had bleeding. so that's what led to his death. now, we have had about 30 people who have died over the last ten years, it is a rare occurrence, but, many, many thousands of people do get injured on the treadmill. what i thought we would do is show people how to do a treadmill safely. so what's the first thing we do? take your cell phone away. we don't want you distract the. let's get on the treadmill. now, what your seeing, folks, is that he straddling the treadmill he will pell put on his safety belt. very, very important, that that cord gets connected to his belt, or his pants, so if he falls off the machine stops immediately.
7:34 am
now, what he's going to do, start the machine by the way one of the things that everybody preaches is you need to know the casino of equipment you're using. >> start slow. he started the machine. treadmill going. plugged in. ready to go. he doesn't have a cell phone. he is not texting while getting on treadmill. and he's doing it the proper way. >> you know, sometimes when i am on treadmill, i get distracted by what's on tv, too, some places you used to be able to change the channel? >> yes? >> and i fell off of one over at the bellevue. >> tv right -- >> yes. >> doctor mike, i've been told, some people they look down at their feet, that can kind of cause to you lose your balance? you shouldn't look down? >> people who run on street need to get used to running on treadmill.
7:35 am
one thing that people don't realize, they're very dangerous for children. and about four years ago or so, mike tyson's daughter, was strangled by that safety cord, because she was unsupervized and on treadmill. so we need to be aware, that specially with children, they must be supervised. >> mr. mr. goldberg's case do you know what happened? did he hit his head? >> we think he somehow tripped or fell, hit hit head, had lots of bleeding, that's what published reports are saying. so we don't know the details, but, i don't know that from what i've red 'd cardiac arrest, sounds to me like he fell down, injured his head, bleeding, and unfortunately, no one was around. and so one of the other things you want to think about is having supervision, having someone there. >> a work out budd. >> i up there to keep an eye on you. >> i think private villa down in mexico. >> like in the afternoon, i think his brother who found
7:36 am
him, hours later. >> doctor mike, good point. >> that's powerful couple, goldberg's, sandberg's. >> created survey monkey now worth like $2 billion, then she wrote the book lean in. very popular. >> yes, icons out there in silicon valley. 7:36. say good-bye to the 40 hour work week. here is the problem. i'm not talking about less hours. i'm talking about more hours. you know, we need better over time pay in this country. >> so we should get paid more? >> yes, yes.
