8:00 am
on fox 29 weekend we're looking at hit and run cases we have been covering three high profile ones over the last month. so why is it so hard to get an arrest an a conviction? plus two people now forced to register as sex offenders forgetting down and dirty on the beach. does the punishment fit the crime annoys rape date, new reports tom brady is going to be suspended but for how long will he be benched and for how long should be benched. weigh in all morning long. your news, your neighborhood, life and interactive, this is fox 29 weekend. > good morning to fox 29 weekend on saturday may 9. we're local, interactive and
8:01 am
we're very happy you decided to start the day with you. >> good morning to you. there are so many things that are happening. you have a graduate that's graduating. we have the regattas. whatever it is, let us know. it is a foggy start to this saturday morning. where did the city go? you can barely see it. before we get to over to dave warren, we do have a weather question. >> my name is eric and is the weather going to be nice today? >> thank you very much. yes, the weather will be nice. it doesn't look nice right now. it looks like it could rainy second. some low clouds. the lehigh valley, let's check the weather there. it looks like things will be clearing up slowly. the temperatures will be climbing into the 70s. it determines how low the clouds are, it could be thick fog
8:02 am
depending on where you're living temperatures climbing up to near 80. 10 miles in allentown, but you go farther south and these numbers drop. look at the coast, atlantic city is two miles visibility. half a mile there in wildwood. there's a dense fog advisory, even some drizzle around even along the coast you might see some patchy drizzle. there's some drizzle out there and it will be the case here for the next few hours. dense fog advisory in this area from 9 until 11. 11 1 # closer to the coast. by this afternoon these temperatures will be climbing out of the 60s and into the 80s. we need the sunshine. it's going to take a few hours before this fog clears out. thank you. new this morning, there's a man recovering after a shooting that's happened overnight in montgomery county. this was just before 1 this morning at tennis avenue and north spring garden street in ambler.
8:03 am
police are looking for a silver jeep that fled the the scene. if you have any information, police call police right away. a bus collides with a pedestrian one woman is killed. it all happened at the height of rush hour at 11th and arch. a couple walked through a red traffic light and a 63 year old woman was struck by a duke both as she crossed arch. the woman was looking at her ipad and didn't see the oncoming vehicle. she was on her electronic, her ipad and she wasn't paying attention. she wasn't paying attention and it just hit her. the duck both was crossing 11th street with a green light. the female was crossing southbound with a steady read light. there were 28 people on the duck both and dozens of witnesses at the intersection. police say preliminary reports
8:04 am
indicate that this was just a tragic accident. >> it is 8:04. right now philadelphia police are on the hunt for a man who abducted and sexually assaulted a man in the fish town area. sabrina coast is in huntington park. does the person they are looking for resemble the sketch they first put out. >>reporter: he resembles it pretty closely. cops say this guy targeted two women in one night. the first of them got away just in the nick of time, the second not so lucky. take a look, this is the mug shot police have release of the man they went to get off the streets of philadelphia. 4 year old manuel arbitron. they've ided him and violation of uniform fires act. here's how bold he is. last friday, may 1 he allegedly
8:05 am
approached a woman walking alone in the logan section of city just before 4:30 in the morning. cops say he showed her a handgun and tried to shove her in a minivan. she was able to fight him off and runaway. just one hour later, literally at 5:22 that same morning, the same thing happened in fish town. this time police say he was allegedly able to abduct a 22 year old woman. they say he sexually assaulted her in that minivan. we talked to police. here's what they told us. she was inside the van with the male for about an hour, maybe more when she was released in the same area from where she was picked up. and again police said that victim gave a pretty good description of her surroundings and the interior of that minivan. that stretch, of course, also resembling that mug shot. 24 year old manual intron as. police say he wastrelling for
8:06 am
victims last friday morning. he is from hunterdon park. that's where police are searching. between fish town and logan, the two areas where police say this guy may have struck. >> as sabina said presumed to be armed and dangerous. so just call the police if you have any additional information. in our cover story this morning we are talking about hit and run cases. we've seen three hit and run cases, two children died. a third left a woman hospitalized. a dryer turns himself in, but that's not always the case. police are still looking for a driver on a deadly hit and run on masher street, a 2 year old died in that crash. friday an emotional commencement ceremony at temple university a mother accepts her daughter's diploma while her daughter
8:07 am
remains hospitalized after a hit and run. comments coming in, lucky to be alive. please get well soon, a beautiful girl. of course talking about that temple university student. still the question remains why isette so hard to track down hit and run suspects and then get conviction? attorney amy feldman joins us live this morning. good morning to you. >>reporter: good morning. > it's interesting because you talk about hit and runs. a the look of circumstances the car is visible. there are dozens of witnesses in a lot of these situations. why is it so hard to catch them and get a conviction? >> i have to tell you the reason why it seems that a lot of times the car is visible. it's in broad daylight and lots of witnesses around is because those are the ones that we see the most on television because those are the ones with visual. those are the ones that are caught on surveillance tape. in fact, there are a lot of cases that happened outside the city t. they often happen late at night.
8:08 am
we just don't he have he new people to tell us how many people were in that car, what's the driver look like and when the car goes you've taken your biggest piece of evidence away with you. in circumstances and the one we were talking about on masher street, you actually have someone that came forward. that person still not in custody. this one seems like it should be a pretty easy case to solve. therein lies one of the big problems. when somebody gets away you just don't know who the driver is. any time there is a lag between the time hits the person or the buys list, between the time there's a hit and a run and you find the discuss account p, a couple of peaces of evidence are gone. one who was it, who was driving the car. even when you find the car, you're not 100 percent sure who the driver is. if you're not sure where the car is or if you don't have a good license plate damage can be fixed in that amount of time and
8:09 am
of course one of the biggest problems is one of the reasons why people leave the keep of a crime is because they're impaired at the time it happened. if you wait several hours or several days or weeks later, the evidence of whether or not t the driver was impaired, that just disappears completely. you'll never get that back. that's the reason why it's so hard to convict even once you find the person who you are identifying to be the driver. i want to turn this because it almost sounds like some of the drivers have an incentive in terms of not getting convicted. i have to tell you, that is one of the big things is that if if there ever is a problem where the driver goes away, the fact of the matter is they do have an incentive. they know that it's harder to prove these cases where you don't have the guy caught at the scene red handed. the statement i think we need to do is teach people if you just stop, leave up to it, own up to
8:10 am
it, number one, at least the court of public pin will be in your favor. everyone knows that kids dart out into the street. juryies don't like convicting people who by some grace of god happened to find themselves at that scene. when you have somebody who who demonstrates a lack of integrity or a fear thatting on is going to happen to them as opposed to what is going to be concerned about what just happened. the court of public opinion turns against you. you're faced with much more serious charges of leaving an accident and getting into an accident. have to remind people at the very end of the day the bottom line, this is your integrity. this advertise whether or not you're a good person. everybody makes a mistake, own up to it. that's the lesson we need to teach people and if you don't,3& the consequentials will be far worse because you left that scene. that's the message want to leave people with.
8:11 am
we appreciate your type. >> we've seen too many of these recently. so what's the potential solution. how can you address this? you can leave your comments on fox 29 facebook. tweet us at fox 29. we're following with breaking news from oversees this morning, a court has sentenced former he egyptian president has look bar to three years in prison as well as a fine. he was convicted on corruption charges. the 87 look bar was over thrown back in 2011. still to come, sex on the beach and weir not talking about the drink here, we're talking about a crime, does the punishment feed the deed. plus the ohio kidnapping victims speak out about the 10 years plus the ohio kidnapping victims speak out about the 10 years they spent in

good one, 8:14 and welcome back to fox 29 weekend. in your news now, an agonizing conclusion to the new york murder trial of a man accused in 1979 disappearance of first grader aton pains. a hung jury leading one of the nation's gut wrenching missing person's cases still unresolved. her in ans of maple shade, new jersey, accused of choking the 16 year old to death and then dumping his body. after 16 days jurors could not
8:15 am
reach a unanimous jury. one of the jurors said he was not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt. he admitted to killing pain, but they said he was mentally ill. pace was nationally known as one of the first missing children who was actually picture odd a milk carton. this is a cellphone shocker. a woman buys a phone for her 12 year old little girl only to find explicit photos on the phone. keisha washington says she bought the wireless verizon at lehigh streets. she brings it home and gives it to her little girl. five minutes later she came down and said mommy i don't think i can have this because there's bad stuff in it, nasty stuff. i said what did you mean? well there's a woman there at the
8:16 am
topup wireless store whose said her job is to make sure the phones work. we are still waiting for a call back. > 29 year old is facing charges after they said they found child importantographer i in his possession. deal admitted that he was looking at child porn on the internet. police also found dvds containing child porn. beal is facing more than 2 dozen felony charges and his bale is set at $100,000. there as a pretty shocking scene for families energying a beautiful day on the beach. we're showing you this couple because they were caught, according to investigators having relations, sexual relations on broad daylight on a public beach in florida. and now they have to register as sex offenders. the jury found the couple guilty of lewd behavior and they have to register as sex offenders and face a prison sentence of up to
8:17 am
15 years. eric writes, what a waste of taxpayer money for the trial and then to have them classified as sex offenders. that's not what that law was intended for. having sex on a public beach, stupid, yes, but this is a blatant case of over prosecution. heater writes everyone keeps saying that it was just sex but there were children and families walking bias they were having -- how would you feel if your child seen them having just whatever and that is why they have to register it is sickening. lots of strong opinions on this one. let's bring in attorney heather hanson by skype. good morning. >> let's make sense of this first. what would happen in our area? would someone really have -- to register as a sex offender. >> that's what happened in florida. in our area, if you are in delaware, it's similar laws there. the reason -- heather was right, not only does she have a great
8:18 am
name but she was 100 percent correct. the reason is if children are around. if you do lewd and vicious behavior and there is ' children around we do everything under the law to protect children from crimes. unfortunately this false within the definition of sexual crimes. so when there are children around in delaware you can face, it's not quite 15 years but you can face the possibility of a felony. you can also face having to register as a sex offender. >> new jersey is a little bit easier on people. in fact, last summer in sea isle there was a couple that was doing similar things in the water many. the cop came up to the water told them to get out of the water and arrested them. it was lewd behavior to the fourth degree. they face up to 18 months in prison. so big difference. how about in behavior. obviously we don't have the ocean right there, but there's plenty of lakes and encounters that people could have. pennsylvania is similar to delaware that it all depends on
8:19 am
who is around. what exactly it is that you're doing but you can actually face the possibility of having to register as a sex offender much it's pretty shocking consequence when people are young and making decisions. what do we think about this? this couple they were actually offered a plea bargain, but they didn't take it. >> listen, i think most prosecutors aren't going to prosecute this to the fullest extent of the law. this couple, the man had a history of a past felony and the state's attorney was very upset. they were tourists. they were really insulting people's intelligence. they were claiming that she was dancing on him to wake him up. i think that part of that is what led the jury. they came back in 20 in ins. what the jury saw is pretty clear as to what they are doing. the bottom line is most prosecutors would not pursue this to the fullest extent of the law, but once you insult a
8:20 am
prosecutor and a jury, then you're going to have to face the consequences. we have a lot of people in our news room and parents on the jury. arrogant. thank you so much. >> thanks, have a good day. > let us know what you think about this one. we had a lively debate. a lot of strong opinions. use our hashtag, fox 29 weekend. the comments are starting to come in. it looks like it's going to be a fairly nice day. that's what dave tells us. it's going to turn around, right? >> we'll get to that. hi, i'm in new jersey for the world series of birding. what's the weather today? if only someone knew. i can give you a good guess here. the world series of birding sounds intense. looking at birds all day today trying to see most species all across the state. i imagine you like good skies and good advice bill. we have fog and low clouds.
8:21 am
the temperatures will stay into the mid 60s there all day because with those low clouds and fog that sunshine really can't warm the things up right along the coast. a different story in land, though. look at the visibility here. this is the actual forecast. the numbers will jump up rapidly between now and 12 except for right along the coast there and in dover. that's the sunburning off the fog. that's when the temperatures start to warm up. it happens about noon today. stays mostly clear for most the day today except right along the coast. good visibility, plenty of sunshine. maybe just a few clouds developing late in the afternoon to the north and western suburbs. down south there right along the coast that fog will be stuck all day together today. that is cape may county. visibilities will be down and temperatures will stay down as well. sunshine can't really warm things up. drizzle out there now. radar not even picking up some of the light drizzle around. don't be surprised if you zoo he some rain drops on your windshield this morning if you're driving around through

8:45 am
bit scared of sharks. now we are able to understand the different areas that they're going. what are they doing in those different areas? why are they migrating this way? the mere i lee, this is kind of funny since they started tracking her, they put her out on there twitter. she started traveling more than 20,000 miles since they did that, but the twitter followers, that's explode, too. mere i lee, of course has her own twitter page, which you can see here. she has almost 22,000 fuelers. lots of people are tweeting her. josh wrote, my live goal was always to be tingle tool friends with a great white. now, mere i lee shark is following me. so things are working out great. marilyn went onto say that mary lee should meet at the pool at harrahs. we should grab a by the bite to

8:47 am
the sunshine tries to burn these clouds off by noon. still you can see some patchy drizzle. it's until about 12. there could be a sprinkle l, light rain or drizzle until about 4:00, but it's mostly clear. maybe an isolated shower to the north later this afternoon or this evening. many of the area is clear. we're in for a repeat overnight tonight. the low clouds coming back, the fog redeveloping so that's what you wake up to again tomorrow morning. temperatures will be stuck in the 60s for now. once we get that sunshine they drop into the 70s and go into the 80s. that will be about 12 to 1:00. this is what could bring us some rain tropical storm anna at 8:00. at winds 60 miles an hour moving over the warmer water. that is why it continues to intensify making landfall over north carolina getting close to our area by tuesday. so between monday and tuesday as a front approaches and you get

cup of sugar. one quarter cup of non fat dry milk. i'll going to bring this to a boil. the non fat dry milk helps increase the protein content of your gentlemen lat oh and that translates to gem i in. while that is coming to a boil add the remaining cup of sugar. i'm going to ribbon this. the reason for doing this is sugar races the temperature of the yokes. it's not going to scramble since i added the hot milk. as your milk comes to a boil i'm going to lee lay it. the entire mixture goes back to the pot. at this point you want to use either a wooden spoon or a heat resistant spatula. you don't want to use a whip because you can make a foam at the top and you won't be able to
8:53 am
see when it's done. you are stirring constantly under medium heat. i can see it starting to get thick. when it comes to the back of the spoon, you run your fingers through. immediately i'm straining it into the container that's in the ice. it's called shin what, a fine strainer. any strainer that you have is okay. as soon as i've strained it i can add the one cup of half and half. that also helps stop the cooking. one teaspoon of vanilla extract. no matter what flavor i'm doggy still like the vanilla extract because it's a great flavor enhancer. now, add the entire recipe to the strawberry jam to the gentlemen lat owe paste. you can leave it just like this. i like to intensify it.
8:54 am
you can pure ray the strawberry into it. at this point just simply add it to my gentlemen lat owe machine. if you don't have one, pour this into a deep pan, put it into your freezer and return every half hour and give it a good stir. the reason this makes such a nice mixture is because it's breaking down the ice crystal to make the cream i and get it started. roughly this takes 20 minutes to a half an hour. if it starts getting hard, you want to get it until it's not freezing anymore. you take it out and you wrap it and do what we call ripen it. you you let it freeze for two hours in your freezer. after 20, 25 minutes i can see this nice and fuel. scrape it down. cover it and put it in your freezer to firm it up. or if you're really insistent, just dig right in.

9:29 am
it was kind of, you know, unreal for the first few minutes that i heard about it. i just couldn't believe it. i think he was there not even a month and he couldn't even deal with what he put us through for 10 years. of course he hung himself in prison shortly after being convicted and sentenced to life in prison. plus a thousand years. it is #:29. a court has sentenced former egyptian president owe bar to three years in prison as well a fine. he was convicted of corruption charges. the court issued this verdict this morning. the 87 year owe bar was over thrown back in 2011. we're basically talking about the sports story of the week and it rings really true and strikes a nerve with philadelphia fans. we're talking about deflate-gate and the nfl's report that patriot's quarterback tom brady was at least somewhat aware of
9:30 am
what was going on. >> this morning there was reports that roger queue del could suspend brady as early as next week. the tweets started coming in as soon as this discussion broke. why isn't anyone talking about taking away the super bowl title it should result in a fine or a suspension. anything else over reaction. for joining us, johnny marks from 97.5, the fanatic. we've been talking about this since it happened. good morning to you. >> good morning. > what do you think? it's pretty clear that he knew something. >> i think he knew more than something. it was almost like i don't weren't to say a systematic. what he did did with everything, here's the bottom line, what happened happened and if you want to say that it's not big of a deal what he did, you hear this often. you hear this right now as far as the coverup is usually worse than the crime. that's usually the case.
9:31 am
if you read this report like i did, i read through all however many pages. it's pretty clear that not only did he know what happened, but he was behind the equipment manager behind all this stuff. with all that, what do you about it. he couldn't cooperate with nfl investigator as than he lied. after it all happened i think you have to take away games, i'm in the talking about one game, i'm talking about multiple games. i don't think it actually affected what happened necessarily. they beat the colts by 38 points anyway. tom brady is still a good quarterback, but you can't lie anyway and still be the golden boy. can can it impact games? who knows. does it impact his character? i think it should. once you start changing your opinion of the golden boy. you have to start now and you have to look at what bill belichick and the spy gait. it starts at the top. he is going to record practices
9:32 am
and use that in philadelphia. we're still sore about that because that was the eagles super bowl. now 10 years later, how many years later you have this whole controversy. he took great care to make sure that the air was taken out of the balls. is it that big of a deal, probably not. the fact that you covered this up and you went to the stream to make sure that happened, they had equipment guys taking the balls from where the referees had them, going into a bathroom, taking air out of them before he would go to the field. is that a big deal? they sure thought it was. we're calling him tom shade i. we put it up on our fox 29 facebook page. immediately some of the comments started coming in. let's take a look at some of the things that we got. this is the second time that they got caught. he should be kicked out of the nfl is what one person said. they continue on, pete rose only bet on games. he never fixed them and look what happened to i am h. still one more, tom brady wasn't
9:33 am
hgh, he was using a ball that was deflated, laugh out laugh. suspension is ludicrous. it's just a history. some people really serious, others say not that big a deal. in the end we think the nfl actually does. i can see if people were like hey, i like football on the field, it's not that big of a deal. i get that. nfl i think they have to be heavy handed here based on everything that has happened with roger guy del. if you go one game, are they being hard enough. you can't lie to the league and i have to be fair, guys get suspended for doing a lot less than tom brady and he's trying to manipulate the game. i think he gets four. he misses the ring ceremony. do we have a picture? mother's day is coming up. look at this. what are we looking at. that's my mother. this has to be like 1980.

9:35 am
>> ishiah, great question, the skies are going to begin to clear, get a little l sunshine across the lehigh valley. low clouds, the visibility is okay. it's clearing this morning as soon as you get a little hint of sunshine, this is going to be the case every where, as soon as you get the sun, the temperature jumps up 70 to 7 #, up to 80-degrees this afternoon. it's clear on the radar. there is some patchy drizzle. is picks up a few showers along the coast north of atlantic city. not much in the way of rain today. it's just the low clouds and the fog that are keeping the temperatures into the 60s. you could see some patchy drizzle here this morning. as soon as you get the sunshine which could be in the next few hours these numbers will jump up. until then the temperature is not moving much. if you're planning to head out plan to be in the 60s for the next few hours.

us. not that we're so nasty out there, we'll step aside or do something. i see plenty of friendly people on our streets. in 2011, travel and leisure named us one of the america's rudest cities, so at least they're consistent. we have a whole lot of stuff going on in philadelphia. we are so mean, we have the numberers parade and we actually make people watch it. we are a mean city. it's good that this is coming out around mother's day, because if we listen to our mothers more we wouldn't be so mean. we wouldn't be so rude. we would be nices to people. we would treat people the way we want to be treated. i think there ' giving us a rap, but i think it is well deserved. detroit is meaner because, well, they're detroit. but think about this, we came in as a meaner city than baltimore. that's not right. i think that they need to recalculate that and at least
