8:01 am
very happy days to all the mothers watching, including you karen. >> well, thank you. send us pictures of your mom we had love to show them off. use the hashtag #fox29weekend. dave warren, when are we expecting to have some of that fog burn off? >> a lot of people this morning, a lot of people are thinking it, when are we getting these spring-like temperatures? certainly not today. the temperature going up and the humidity is there. that will be the case today and the next few days. we have the low clouds and the fog, the temperatures will stay fairly steady until we start to see a little sunshine. like yesterday, it could be noon maybe a little sooner. the relative humidity is high at 90%. so these temperatures are fairly uniform with clouds and fog everywhere. we don't see the big difference between the city and the suburbs. mid to upper 60s, a very warm
8:02 am
start this morning. mid 60s south jersey and delaware. rather muggy, fairly warm across the north and western suburbs. mid 70s or upper 70s in egg harbor city. but there's the cooler air with the fog. the fog sticks around a little longer and you've got that cooler ocean air coming in. if you're out on the roadways, take a little extra time to slow it down a little bit because you can have a rapid drop in visibility with that fog out there. a quarter mile in atlantic city this morning, but look what happens by noon, the fog goes out the next goes up except right along the coast. this is where you'll see the temperatures start to warm up and that's where we are headed for the mid to low 80s with the high humidity. another muggy, sunny afternoon. >> muggy, sunny but 80.
8:03 am
we're following a developing story in mississippi this morning. two police officers vot and killed during a traffic stop in hattiesburg. both officers were rushed to the hospital where they died. witnesses described the scene. >> i walked from the store, i heard six or seven shots as i got on my porch. i knew instantly somebody was shot. within minutes i knocked on the door and i said somebody got shot. i knew it was serious. >> a statewide manhunt is under way. police don't know why the car was spopd in the first place or what prompted the suspects to
8:04 am
shoot. >> new tonight two teenagers were shot on south street and they are recovering. >> it happened around 1:30 this morning. are the teens expected to be okay and any links to some other things taking place? >> reporter: those teens are expected to be all right. one them, the younger one is in krit:condition. they are expected to recover. so a mother's day blessing for their moms. take a look at where we are right now. this is such a busy stretch of south street. you've got shops, restaurants, apartments. here's the aftermath of the first one.
8:05 am
police say a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, both boys, both shot in the legs just before 1:30 this morning. you can see in the video just how busy south street is at that time of night. police say there are at least 8 shots that were fired so luckily only two people hit. while officers were investigating that shooting, more shots rang out, fire just around the corner. this time a 19-year-old shot in the back of his knee. that was at 9th and bainbridge. so right now police investigating to see whether these two shootings were connected. officers on the scene told us preliminarily it looks like at least one of those shootings might have stemmed from an argument that started somewhere else in the city and led here and erupted into violence here. police are trying to figure that all out. luckily again all of those teens in stable conditions at jefferson hospital. the 16-year-old and the 17-year-old, they told police they felt pain but they didn't
8:06 am
actually see anything or hear anything. so police right now don't have a lot to go on. they don't have any suspects. they're still looking for people to figure out exactly what happened. that's the latest this morning as people are waking up out here. back to you. >> all right, thank you. it is now 8:06. also new this morning a man has been shot and killed inside a car. police were called out to sha scene. the 1200 block of east atlantic street about 12:30 this morning. police say the victim is in his late 30s. the suspect was seen running away. police tell us drugs and money were found in that vehicle. and also happening today we do have a lot of lane close iirs to tell you about. >> a lot of backed up traffic because of the susan g.komem race for the cure. here's what you need to know. the area around the museum will be closed as will girard from
8:07 am
33rd to 38th as will mlk drive. >> hi, i'm bruce gordon. another administration found itself with some explaining to do. after appearing it was opposed to some new technology. during budget hearings monday, the parking authority revealed it wants to unveil a new app that it would alert motorists that their meter was about to expire. it sounds great except that parking tickets provide the bulk of the $10 million a year the parking authority sends to the school for the public school system. the chief of staff pointed out the obvious. fewer parking tickets means fewer dollars to students. so the chief of staff quickly walked back his comment.
8:08 am
my take? the city is in an awfully awkward position. while they claim they want folks to follow the rules while parking, if they actually did that, the school kids would get shorted. remind me of thin taxes from things like alcohol and tobacco. the money also goes to public schools. the idea of increasing those costs is in theory to punish the users and maybe encourage folks to quit the habit but if everyone stopped drinking and smoking, schools would take the hit. here's a crazy idea. why don't we try to figure out a system for funding public schools that doesn't rely on the city's hypocrisy. the unspoken message, keep drinking, keep smoking. it's the only thing keeping our schools open. only in philly.
8:09 am
8:12 am
>> three arrests in connection with that shooting that happened in mississippi of two police officers. police say an officer stopped a car about 8:30 last evening, as soon as backup arrived, shots were fired. both officers were rushed to the hospital where they did die. >> it's 8:12. updating you on your news. a fire at a nuclear power plant in new york forces an automatic shutdown. this happened last night at the indian point nuclear plant. officials say a transformer failed sparking the fire. they say the reactor is safe and stable. police and firefighters were on sight as a precaution. >> these situations we take very seriously. this is a nuclear power plant. it's nothing to be trifled with. we have a lot of emergency drills all the time. but it's one thing to drill and it's another thing to see it happen and unfold in real-time.
8:13 am
so luckily this was not a major situation. >> officials say there was no impact on the public and it's not out of the order for a transformer to have a problem. they also noted that it was on the nonnuclear side of the plant also shut down. new jersey's oyster creek power plant is also currently shut down. a one-year-old boy has passed away after police say his own mother threw him into the lehigh river. officials say a 19-year-old threw her son off a bridge and she reportedly jumped in herself. the mother survived and was arrested. the boy had been in the hospital every since and tragically passed away yesterday. an autopsy is planned for tomorrow and no word on whether charges against the mother will be upgraded.
8:14 am
>> it's tick season and lyme disease is rampant our area. ashley olsen reportedly is now battling the disease and also avril lavigne was bed ridden for five months. i found this lovely tick on my daughter tonight and daughter had one in her hairline, found it when i kissed her head good night. i kissed the tick. joining us allie and her daughter. both of you have had lyme disease? >> i have had it for about 30 years now. she was born with it. which was a little strange and unusual because we used a surrogate. we had my aunt carry that. was kind of a shock.
8:15 am
we found two weeks into her birth. >> ideally when you get lyme disease if you can catch it right away, you get treated, there can be help and resolution. what happens when you live with it for a long time? >> it's hard. it's a roller coaster ride. every day is different. you don't know how you're going to wake up each day. you look good on the outside butpy really went through a rough period. i did four years of iv and you know, i was using a wheelchair and cane every day to get around. >> were you taking iv antibiotics? >> yes. >> i've heard about that as a treatment for people who have had it for some later stages of the disease. is that what they're doing now? >> you know, it's something that you know it depends on the case, neurologically how progressed people are but the majority of the time, yes. you have to get the iv antibiotics. in my case it was a little different because when we found out i was literally two months
8:16 am
before my husband proposed to me so i didn't want to do the iv right away because i was planning a wedding. i started with orals and then i relapsed really bad and i had to do the iv. and it's been rough. we've had to live next to my parents. >> so you have this whole group you're wearing your green ribbons and your nails? >> i run a group on facebook called lyme away and i also run a mom's group. i started the group because i felt like i needed the support as well. my body was just not in the best shape. >> thank you for shurg your
8:17 am
8:18 am
>> tell me what i need to do. >> we just have to bite the lime and take a picture. >> can you take a picture? >> sure. >> here we go. 1, 2, 3. thanks for raising awareness. let's get our check as we head over to our forecast. david, this is your father. how bad is the storm going to be down here in sunset beach, north carolina? don't forget to call your mother today. >> you know, i'm making
8:19 am
conversation. i didn't even know they knew how to use that phone and send the video. i definitely will call my mother today. they live right there in sunset beach so i called to check in on them last night. everything certainly looks fine. the wind 45 miles per hour with tropical storm ana. it made landfall 6:00 this morning just north of myrtle beach. here's the radar. flooding a problem because it's moving so slow, so flash flooding and issues there. a lot of moisture is there and it will turn to the north and pick up speed. it may not give us a lot of rain because here's what's happening. by monday and tuesday it's moving through virginia and it's no longer tropical. here is the remnant low. in the middle you might get sinking air and a lot of moisture is being robbed not being able to pull up to the philadelphia area. it will feel muggy.
8:20 am
there may be a few showers or isolated thunderstorms but how muggy it feels and with a front approaching, certainly not going to see a lot of rain with this. it will be fairly dry given that weather pattern. talk about today, there could be a few showers. computer forecasts continue to indicate that right through delaware here, a shower possibly a thunderstorm could develop this afternoon with a little sunshine. so 84 today. tonight down to 68. we have a shower or storm early, then low clouds and fog again. you'll wake up to pretty much the same thing tomorrow morning. >> we have somebody who came in and spent some time with us not too long ago. and there it is. >> it's an eagles football player. i recognize that face. >> you really liked it when he was here. >> he's a very good looking man. >> there was that girl and she said if she got enough tweets and responses would you go to the prom and he agreed and he followed through.
8:21 am
what a great guy. >> i've seen different tweets, i've seen him going through the process. she was great, she was thrilled. i've got to give him crazy respect for going through with that. >> you know it was his first prom? he didn't get to go while he was in high school. coming up, we hear a little bit of music. healing through sound. this so cool. >> and how a local hospital is using music to help cancer patient. >> highway safety for truckers. how some new technology could protect big rig drivers and the vehicles around them. what that truck can do. iggy azalea is so fancy in our neck of the woods. she's performing tonight. >> you may want to think twice about posting on social media.
8:24 am
8:25 am
happy mother's day, kind, selfless, caring. but they continue to come in. you can continue to tweet. we'll show you more in just a moment but right now, let's knock the king. >> time now for knocking the king. >> hi howard, this is shannon and i heard what you had to say about chase. >> when will the people of philadelphia realize it's over for chase utley. the world series days are over. i think chase utley may be over. >> in your case, those that can't do, commentate. let's look at the stats.
8:26 am
chase utley is a six-time all star including last year, and a four-time silver slugger. the numbers stand for themselves. he's had one bad month. it's only one bad month out of a six month season. if he were to do this in july his numbers wouldn't reflect it as badly. it's the first month of the season and he's starting slow. as the season goes on, he's going to be a much hotter batter. you have no idea what you're talking about. bye. >> shannon, are you done? the reason the phillies are in this situation is because people like you think about the past. the past is the past. you want some numbers since you rolled out numbers besides the 100 plus that he's litting right now? how about .230 since the middle of last season. that is a longer period of time. it's sad, i know you can't take
8:27 am
8:30 am
record for applications. applications for this fall have exceeded last year's record of 126,000. he also says that funded faculty research and also online classes are growing by double digit percentages. the board of trustees approving an interim operating budget. they need to approve a final spending plan for the upcoming school year. and it's starting to feel like summer outside, and tourism in center city could break a record last year. last year hotel occupancy rates were higher. many tourists are finding it more affordable. nearly 10 million visitors took in attractions last year. and this morning the down side of social media. facebook can be great for sharing information, but what happens when that information is just wrong and could potentially
8:31 am
destroy a person's life? that's what a man in australia says happened to him and it was all sparked by a selfie. he says he was at a target store when he saw a cutout of darth vader and decided to take a picture. he saw a group of kids and he told them he would just be a second, that he wanted to send the picture to his own children. he said the woman followed him out of the store and snapped this picture of him. but that's not all. she also posted the picture on facebook calling him a "creep" and using the word "sex offender." her post was shared 10,000 times. he says the woman has not apologized at all. when people heard about this, it blew up on social media. end of the day it's ridiculous that this father needs to explain his actions, but this woman wake as way with it all. and joy said my husband, dad,
8:32 am
brother often smile at young children. this woman has some issues going on, that's for sure. so to discuss it, joining us by skype, attorney and lifestyle expert laura. good morning. >> hi, thank you for having me. >> first i want to pull on your attorney hat. because she puts this out there. she essentially has destroyed his character. 20,000, 30,000 people have seen it. does he have any legal back lash against her? >> well, this particular case actually happened in aus stalia, but i'll speak to it as if a case like that happened in the united states, there would definitely be at least a possible claim by the dad against the mother for defamation. but from a legal stand point, it's a complicated and interesting issue. because the reason the mother posted what she posted is she mistakingly thought this guy was
8:33 am
taking a picture of her children. so she didn't defame him on purpose. she did it by accident. so what it will come down to is whether her mistake is a reasonable or not. >> does it matter? i destroyed your life by accident. also with a lawsuit, you would have to prove some sort of damages. >> that's right. a successful defamation claim requires that the plaintiff show that they suffered economic damages. so merely saying that their character was tarnished or their feelings were hurt or that it was upsetting would not be enough to win a defamation case. this guy would have to show there was some tangible financial repercussions. given what this woman posted. it's not a stretch to think he could have suffered financial republic cushion -- repercussions. she didn't say he was a sex
8:34 am
offender. she said if he were a sex offender, he would be prosecuted. still the implications are a serious one. this woman potentially has a defense of reasonable mistake of fact. >> one more thing combining both of the hats you wear. we were talking about this in the news room. what about the responsibility of all the people who choose to share it not knowing if this person had done anything wrong. do they have both a moral but possibly a legal responsibility to know you're telling the truth? >> well, i think that really is more of a moral responsibility. legally speaking when one shares a facebook or other social media post, usually it's clear in the sharing that that person did not in fact author that post. so it kind of goes with the territory that the readers would understand that the person isn't vouching for the truth of the statement.
8:35 am
but i think from a moral standpoint, if one is going to share something about a person in their community, particularly when it comes to such serious issues as someone mistreating children in some way, i do think there's a moral responsibility to just put some level of investigation in to make sure that it's not a hoax, that maybe there's some fact behind it. just as a matter of general responsibility. >> that makes sense to me. thank you so much for spending some time with us. >> thank you so much. >> we appreciate it. >> and guys, we want to know what you think. because this one had us debating and discussing in the news room because i'm personally one of those people who speaks to everyone. i hate to be labelled like that. so tell us what you think. you can leave your message on our fox 29 facebook page, you can tweet us at fox 29 philly, just use the hashtag #fox29weekend. >> we'll get to more pictures of your moms coming in. we wanted to show you this one. this is a beautiful sight. you see the tornado, but you also see the rainbow right there? that is out in colorado.
8:36 am
strong storm system made its way through the area yesterday. no damage reported, but quite a sight. let's take a live look outside in our neck of the woods. we do have a lot of fog. take a while to burn off yesterday. >> just a little longer yesterday but about the same time today. once it does burn off, it clears out, gets sunshine, temperatures warm up. weather question will it be raining at 3:00? it depends. there will be a few showers out there, but not everywhere. certainly take a closer look at this now and we can see the ultimate doppler is clear. want to focus on this area because this is through delaware and up through the western suburbs of philadelphia. continued information comes in and it suggests we could see a few showers throughout the afternoon and evening. very light and certainly isolated. not everybody will see the rain. clear now and you can see it starts to clear up, like
8:37 am
yesterday, late morning. 11:00, 12:00, 1:00 we start to see the clearing from south to north. there's that area we'll see a few showers popping up, here it is at 3:00. very isolated. one or two showers so can't rule out a raindrop coming down. most of the area will stay dry. here comes the clouds and low fog again you'll wake up to that again tomorrow morning. the morning clouds and the fog. the showers in the western suburbs and ana making landfall. talk about the seven-day forecast you see showers today, tomorrow, likely on tuesday as a front comes through and that's definitely a cold front. 73 to 68. a cooler breeze from tuesday to wednesday and with that cooler air in place, the humidity goes
8:38 am
down. friday morning, cool start at 49 degrees. a little warmer over the weekend but we have to put a few showers in on saturday. >> thank you, dave. so they say that music makes the world go round, but for some people it is even more important. >> we'll talk about it coming up. how a program at children's hospital in philadelphia is helping some young cancer patients receive joy from music.

>> i'm contractor tom with this week's around the house. one of the first things you want to look are cracks in your foundation because that can be a very costly item. you can see here there's a minor crack. it may look small now but it could get a lot bigger. i would go ahead and fill that in immediately. also with all the snow and the heavy winter, you want to make sure the slope of the grade is going away from the house. so when those april showers come down, the rain doesn't puddle and it sheds away. you don't want to flood your basement and you want to secure the foundation for future. next step, make sure your windows are water tight. get yourself a screwdriver and scraper. go through all the caulk. if your windows are wooden, you'll want to check all the wood for soft spots.
8:47 am
if you have a soft spot, spill t. fill it and paint. i'm going to take my caulk gun and put a brand new seal around it to ensure i'm water tight for the spring. one of the most important parts of your roof is the gutter. if the rain is draining properly from your roof but not through the gutter system, you have big problems. make sure the gutter hasn't separated, if it has nail it back into place and secure it. second, make sure the gutter is draining properly. put some water in it, make sure it flows into the down spouts. third, the most dirty part, you'll have to go up and clean the gutter because a dirty gutter will not drain properly. first thing you want to do, make sure your condensing unit is ready for work. easy thing to do is clean it. if you want the coils cleaned,
8:48 am
you need to hire a professional. something you can do at home, get all the debris off the top and get all the debris off the sides. another quick tip, grab a rake and make sure the debris is at least a foot or two clear of the unit. so nothing gets sucked in or drawn in by the wind. in the winter time people have a tendency to bring fire wood closer to the house, in the spring they forget to move it away. you want to keep it 8 to 10 feet from the house and skeer on a wood pile. if you have questions, tweet us. and use hashtag #fox29weekend. >> i've got work to do at my house. a look now at what's trending just as we're getting used to the idea of self-driving cars. a new type of automated vehicle
8:49 am
hits the road soon. >> it's the world's first-ever self-driving truck and it was recently unveiled in las vegas. it works similar to the way an auto pilot function works on the air plane however a driver is required to sit behind the wheel. the truck uses radar to identify what is front and behind it and it locks itself into the lane by staying in between the lines. >> we're augmenting the driver. how do we automatic mate the vehicle in a way that makes sense for the driver. how do we reduce his work loud? >> so if the truck gets into a situation it can't handle, it alerts the driver with a count down to take over the truck. it costs over a million and is currently street legal only for testing in nevada. >> we have a new junior
