of that paperwork? >> tonight, dan shows us a good rule of thumb on how long you need to hold on to it. >> last night i was shredded no, not that kind, this kind. the last night i was cleaning out all of those old financial documents and i will help you figure out what to keep, how long to keep it, and then how to get rid of it. first up, the irs can audit you in most cases up to three years but there are special cases where they can go back six years. play it safe, keep those tax returns for six years at least. and how about those pay stubs for your 9:00 to 5:00. keep them for a year, compare them to your year end tax summary you get from your employer. if all of the numbers look good, go a ahead and toss them. for those big items you by, computers, tv's, jewelry, keep receipts as long as you have the item. the here's why. if there is a theft loss or damage having the original receipt will help you, process your insurance claim. here's a few tips to help you shrink that stack of paper that is taking over your sock

you are not alone. we have been there. it is called a financial jam. there are two types of loans that i want you to avoid though. let me tell you why. first of these loans is a a payday loan basically you are borrowing against your next paycheck. next up you have your car title loan using the the car as collateral for the loan. you've got to be careful because these loans are like putting new carpet in your house while it is on fire. in fact, according to the recent study by pew research an associate they found interest rates can be as high as 300 percent. that is higher than billy penn's hat. in the case of the car title loan you miss a payment, you are walking to work. not good. here's a few tips to get you through a short term cash crunch. pump that emergency savings, cancel magazine subscription, put your pet gold fish up for adoption, whatever it takes throw some money in that emergency fun. next up call your bank and see if they will put overdraft on your checking account you will pay interest but it will be a lot less those other type of

>> hi thinks dann, and congratulations, you have been accepted. to college that is. now you have to figure out how to pay for it. well the good news is colleges are required to send out two additional letters, cost of attendance and the the estimated family contributions letter. cost of attendance will have tuition room board, personal items. well maybe not that personal. estimated family contributions is your road map on how you will pay for college. let me give you a few tips to make this an easier process. first, make hure you sign up for aids, grants, scholarships, for free, like getting a discount off the rack rate. watch those deadlines though. next up looking for student loans go to www dot student loans dot gov to check out different types in general federal student loans are a better deal then private student loans but be careful on the student loans, you don't want to be a servant the rest of your life. you have questions or if you have circumstances or

circumstances change visit your financial aid office. they will get paid to help you figure out how to pay for college so they can get paid it is all connected. finally, never touch your retirement account to pay for college. eat cat food, live with your in-laws, sell blood, do whatever you have to do but don't touch that retirement plan. remember you can bureau for college you cannot bureau for retirement. so there you have it little effort on your part and little planning and paying one of these doesn't have to have cost a boat load of these. >> speaking of college ... no doubt students will do a lot of reading. >> but there's one report ... we all need to be looking at. >> our credit report! >> what kind of books do you like to read, classic westerns. i like to read credit reports. geek yeah. guilty a as charge. but here's why you should read your credit report too. you see the credit report that you have, unique to you and generates two things a

credit score which also then generates the price that you will pay for credit. interest. let me give you an example. if you have a $10,000 car loan and you have good credit over four years that car loan will cost you about $800 in interest. but if your credit is not so good you may pay double that and why? because you have an error on your credit report and study recently suggested that up to 20 percent of us have an error on our credit report. so here's a few tips to make sure credit credit report is accurate. first go to annual credit report.com where you can get your free credit report, once a year. next up go through credit report make sure there is no questionable president wrist or out right errors. if there are, call the credit agency immediately, let them start investigating. finally make sure you put all correspondence in writing, i have been through this a few times and it will require a little back and forth to get those errors or questionable items off of your report.
