8:02 am
that sea breeze kicks in today, not nearly as warm as it was yesterday. ultimate doppler all clear. rain free today, but the temperature, that's the big story. climbing into the 60s by noon. by this afternoon trying to hit the 70 degree mark. a little warmer today. upper 60s in the north and western suburbs. but a big change here, only into the upper 50s, low 60s, a bit cooler. you see that this time of the year with that water temperature only into the 50s. nice and warm by the afternoon. not too bad at noon, but hitting 70 by 5:00, comfortable with that lower humidity. things will start to change by the end of the memorial day weekend, heat and humidity and enjoy the rain-free weekend. it's in the 7-day forecast but at least it's holding off until the end of the holiday weekend. >> let's check with what's happening in the the news this

i'bringing the flavor withs this new guacamole made from creamy hass avocados... people really love it. guacamole guacamole guacamole see? try it on sandwiches like the new chipotle chicken melt with guacamole. subway. eat fresh. >> the senate has rejected a house bulk bill, talking about the patriot act. that vote was immediately followed by a two-month rejection of existing programs. they're going to use two month surveillance tools if a law isn't passed by the deadline. there was a story that grabbed

this story on your social media feeds. veteran police officer and father of eight said he would rather give up his job than his religious beliefs. the officer says he and others were threatened with dismissal if they didn't stop visiting the jail to pray with inmates. boycheck refused and resigned saying he was forced out because of his ministry. the police chief said that's not a choice that he had to make. >> he can believe himself to have been pressured, but there was no pressure on him to leave. there was pressure on him to be obedient. >> it's pretty hard to sit down and help someone seek forgiveness over something spiritual and then discern between that and, well, how are you going to arrest me if you've forgiven me. >> and joining us now to talk about it on skype, david boychek
8:13 am
is actually with us. good morning, sir. how are you? >> good morning, how are you. >> you heard the comments from the chief who said you weren't forced out. i guess you disagreed with that. tell us how you interpreted it? >> i interpreted it i didn't really have a choice due to my faith. we've been doing this ministry outside of work on our days off for approximately 11 months. i brought this to his attention. i consider the chief a godly man. but i know this was brought up by other people in the agency that brought it to the strict attorney's attention and who then advised him it would not be a good idea. >> we want to share with you, because when this was posted and when it got out there, a lot of people had comments out here, thousands of people commented
8:14 am
and there were mixed opinions on it. it was a dumb move by the police chief. this man has the opportunity to impact lives and reduce crime. isn't that the goal? and then another one, if he was a public schoolteacher and tried this with the students he would be fired too. there's a time and place for everything. and finally, betty writes rules are made for a reason. he can always minister somewhere else. he should have remained on the job and let his light shine by being the best officer that he could be. starting with that last one, there are some people who were saying if you were having that strong of an impact, why not try to find some compromise so you can stay and help people. >> i think the impact is going to be greater than we've had with that, especially going around the nation with officers. a lot of people perceive them as being bad, when in actuality officers, we had seven officers total, going in on their days
8:15 am
off and talking with them. i told them with our days off i have a ministry that we do and i pray with people and they said you can't pray with suspects or potential suspects. and i said well, who's considered a potential suspect? they lock up police now, they arrested the police chief down the street for us. so i asked them who can i pray with. the same people i have a ministry with, i don't know who they are that come in and i pray with. >> i have to tell you, in listening to one of the comments that the chief made, he said it's difficult to pray with someone and talk to them about forgiveness and their response would be well, if you forgive me, why am i still here. on the surface, that to me seems a little bit of a reach. but when you were sitting there talking to people, did that conflict ever come up? >> no. we have not had a complaint about that come up. and we actually went there this thursday, two days ago to there,
8:16 am
and all the inmates, they were applauding and crying that we would stand up just to walk in there to share the love of christ with them and what the lord has done for us and just changed people. hundreds of people that we've ministered to there and restored their family. >> we thank you for spending time with us this morning. we've been getting tweets with us this morning and most of the people have been saying that their faith and belief comes before their job and they applaud you. >> thank you. >> and keep the comments coming. let us know what you think. did he make the right decision? should he have stayed on the job or did he sacrifice for what he believes in. you can always tweet us, make sure you use the hashtag #fox29weekend. >> we're across from the tv station.

they're always so much fun. >> there is so much going on on this holiday weekend. this is an interesting one. a lot of people clearly are going to be driving and there's this new app and it's meant to help you out if you get pulled over, and maybe you are a suspected drunk driver. it's pretty controversial. some are calling it dangerous. we will explain it. dave? >> yeah. i was talking about the weather now trying to explain this. nothing out there as far as rain goes. it's our temperatures that will be changing this weekend. not the ultimate doppler. look at those numbers when i come back with the seven-day forecast. >> let's take a live look down the shore, the wildwoods. there's a look at the boardwalk right now. there's a kite festival today starting at 9:00 a.m. >> it makes everybody happy. send us your pictures, whenever you are, whatever you're doing

8:25 am
>> can you do something? >> strollers, a big issue. here in rittenhouse square they don't want you to stop your strollers. >> strollers are good. >> otherwise they're playing hide and seek. >> she wants the you break it, you buy it in her home. >> no. >> in her home. >> she doesn't want my kids touching her stuff. >> when you invited me over your house, you knew i had kids. you've met my kids. they're rotten. i mean they're okay. bottom line, if you want to know what your friends are saying about, your single friends, this is what your friends are saying about you.

8:28 am
good morning. at 8:28. welcome back to fox 29 weekend. and taking a look at some of the headlines in your news now. there will be an extra police presence on new jersey highways this holiday weekend, but there's a good chance you probably won't even notice. new jersey state police are calling them ghost cars. and they'll be used to catch those breaking the law behind the wheel. as you can see, they're black chevrolet caprice and they look unmarked from far away but they've got that faint hologram. it's something you probably won't even catch until it's too late. and there's a new app that's designed with a certain kind of
8:29 am
driver in mind. its creators say it could come in handy if you get pulled over this holiday weekend. if you get pulled over you push the button and it starts recording audio and alerts an attorney. >> we basically provide efficient and communication contact with their clients or someone who is looking for attorney representation at the time. >> the creators understand that some of the criticism that they're getting, because they say the app is catered towards people who may be drinking and driving but they say there's a need for the app and they're not condoning drinking and driving. the app is currently not available in our area, but they're hoping it will be shortly. >> there is a shark in the water this memorial day weekend. actually there's a lot more than one. we've been giving a lot of attention to that one. the mary lee the great white shark who has been in our area
8:30 am
lately. should we be concerned about this? should we be afraid to go in the water this holiday weekend. there's a pretty good chance i will never encounter a shark in open water. then we got this tweet, i really want to go in the beach and get in the water but i'm scared a shark is going to get me. joining us by skype, a shark expert. >> good morning. >> i've been following on twitter the mary lee. do we need to be concerned? >> well, i mean, the fact that we've got a tag, a device that looks a like bit like this on mary lee's fin that's giving us information about where she is right now in time doesn't mean that we're affecting her behavior. so nothing has changed in terms of the shark population. and right now mary lee is off
8:31 am
the eastern shore of virginia and she's probably about 10 miles offshore. she may be in the vicinity of virginia beach over the memorial day weekend or she might head back up towards off ocean city. but no, i wouldn't worry about it. it's just knowledge. we're just lighting a candle in the darkness and realizing these animals are there and it doesn't change the statistics that white sharks don't bother people on the east coast of the united states. >> they do bottle seals and i've noticed that seals have been making their way into places. >> we've protected the seal population now for about 40 years, so that group of animals is coming back in a big way. and actually we don't really probably have a shark problem. we have a seal problem. up in cape cod, for example, there's a really almost an overpopulation of seals in certain places.
8:32 am
and so the sharks are beginning to rebound because they are being protected and their food is rich. and so they're coming back. and reestablishing the balance that we need in life in the sea. so i won't worry about it. i wouldn't go swimming in a seal colony. that doesn't make any sense. but as far as the safety along our regular beaches, nothing is different. >> how many sharks are there? we're paying a lot more attention to the mary lee recently, we had some catches of mako shark. news flash, we know that sharks live in the water, but in any given time how many of them are swarming in the general neck of the woods of the mood atlantic? >> that's impossible to say. around the world we have about 500 different species of sharks and millions upon millions, probably billions of animals. it's hard to put a number on it. but along the mid atlantic region, there are about a dozen species that will be present in the coastal waters and the near

offshore waters at this time of the year. and quite frankly, i remember working on sharks for 40 years, and sharks do come into close contact with people much more often than you might think. and the fact that they don't bite us. the fact that shark bites on people are so rare except in certain places where people are really swimming where sharks are feeding, indicates that we're not on their menu. they're really not interested in us. we're in their domain and we need to understand that and act accordingly. >> thank you for your insight. we'll try to keep that in mind. you always see the pictures with people with the sharks nearby, closer than you think, but we'll try to be calm this holiday weekend. >> thank you and have a good holiday weekend. >> don't think of jaws, think of a beautiful thing in the ocean and have a great time in the ocean. >> what do you think about all of the shark talk recently in

the wake of mary lee. use our hash tag #fox29weekend. >> we'll find out just how warm it's going to but be furs first we've got this question. >> it just happens to be my mom's birthday. thank you. >> you're very welcome. a birthday party this weekend. a lot going on. it's a bit cool now, but it's warming up. mantua, new jersey.
8:35 am
looks like off to a cool start, 61 at noon, nice, 5:00 up to 68. trying to hit that 70 degree mark. it will not hit 70 degrees down the shore. cool, cool and cool each day. the wind coming in off the water. the ocean water temperature 59. it keeps the air temperature down, it warms up late morning and cools off the afternoon as you get the wind picking up out of the south. all the way to 11:00, dry. we'll start off with temperature about 60s, climbing into the 70s, closer to 80 tomorrow. so a bit of a warm-up between today and tomorrow, but look what happens not in the north and western suburbs, down the shore only into the upper 50s and low 60s. so a bit cooler right along the coast. that's the case again tomorrow. but hot and humid weather will be coming back in the seven-day forecast. i'll look at that later. >> coming up, transgender rights and the right to go to the bathroom.
8:36 am
it's a fight that many people have every day. coming up, what the city of philadelphia is doing to protect the rights of these individuals. >> plus, really shocking revelations about a reality tv family trending all over twitter. what tlc now plans to do with the "19 kids and counting" family following allegations that are very, very serious.

headline, tlc has pulled the show. because of this newly surfaced report from 2006 which reveals the oldest duggar josh allegedly sexually assaulted three of his siblings and one other woman when he was only 14 years old. this report claims that both his wife and family knew about his actions and they think the entire incident, they say when they went through this experience, drew them closer to god. >> and this story has gotten so much response. the fact that the sisters still have to see and deal with him as part of their family and probably have been brainwashed thinking this is okay since he was only 14, that sickens her. and jim follows up. i thought the statute of limitations for sexual abuse was lifted. they did nothing right. amy follows up. so punish everyone for one person's mistake from how many
8:41 am
years ago. amy, you're concerned about canceling the show? >> a lot of people have been watching the show for a long time. what we can do is take from this one moment and look at the issue of sexual abuse and how prevalent it can be. and maybe have those discussions that need to be had in households all around our area as well. it is 8:41 right now. and if you've downloaded our fox 29 news app, you are among the first to learn this. the breaking news stuff you want to read about, go to the app store, and you can download it. it only takes a matter of 30 seconds. >> yeah. and we sit there in the news room watching them get the information out you need to have that app. coming up, transgender rights and the right to go to the bathroom. it's a fight many people have every day. coming up, we'll tell you what the city of philadelphia is doing to protect the rights of those individuals. >> the sixers.
8:42 am
>> be happy, their record is abysmal. is it ever going to be worth it? i say no, no, no. tanking year after year. because of some draft. you tell me, i'm wrong. give me some reason why, to think this is a good thing what they're doing. >> i'll tell you, you're a hater. >> i remember when i used to go to all the sixers game, it was packed, it was exciting, fun, action. >> sixers strong. >> it's memorial day weekend. we'll be right back.

welcome back. it's time for one every our junior reporters. lauren dugan from villa nova university. a lot of people have been talking about the kardashians and the whole issue of being transgender. what happens when people are transgender? >> so, karen, in the transgender community, more often than not, people are questioned when they enter a rest room. and again, more often than not, you see acts of violence. so the philadelphia mayor's office of lgbt affairs is
8:46 am
launching a new site to help identify gender neutral bathrooms and locate safe spaces. >> folks don't realize that they have privilege, you know, in that they don't ever have to worry about going to the bathroom. whereas transgender people, who are gender none conforming do worry that a lot. >> reporter: jamie never knows how he's going to be perceived in a public restroom. the director of affairs has created a guide, an interactive google map that pins gender neutral bathrooms around the city. >> to have your identity and who you are fundamentally not only in danger or attacked but questioned when you need to do something as basic as use a restroom is just unacceptable. >> reporter: philadelphia legislation states it's unlawful to refuse any person access to a bathroom where the person's
8:47 am
gender identity is consistent for the gender for which the bathroom is reserved. while a trans individual can legally select a bathroom based on their identity, the danger lies when the bathrooms are policed socially. >> there are too many instances of individuals who have been brutalized. >> reporter: like this in a baltimore mcdonald's in 2011. >> we're trying to get to a place where people can be safe. where people are not murdered on a regular basis. >> reporter: murdered like a 21-year-old who was stabbed to death in north philadelphia. she's the eighth trans woman of color murdered in the u.s. this year. >> part of the world letting them have a simple place to use the bathroom. >> the gotta go website and mobile app for everyone to use.

jambalaya. most of the lick wednesday should be absorbed. jambalaya got its origin many years ago when people were in the depression, they just put a mish mosh of things together and whatever worked for them, worked. we're going to turn the flame off, now it has to sit. notice there's a little liquid on top, you want that to absorb into the rice. now it's going to sit on its own for about 10 more minutes. so now the 10 minutes are up, all the liquid is absorbed and now it's time to taste our jambalaya. give it a little stir. look at that. sausage, shrimp, chicken. now it's time to taste. rice done perfectly, all the flavors, very spicy, shrimp done perfectly. this has been your fox food bite.

dear fellow citizen, i know what it's like to grow up without a whole lot of money. and how much it matters to save. i try to teach that to my daughter. i'm saving for a house and i don't want my money to go to bank fees. i'm sure you don't either. so ask me about one deposit checking. next time you have a question about avoiding fees, ask me. sincerely, samantha parke, fellow mom and fellow citizen.

9:01 am
many of you are out and about doing so many things. of course it's the memorial day weekend. lots of you remembering those in service who gave their lives for us. >> hi, my name is ben. i have a baseball game on saturday. temperatures are getting a little warmer here but have you to wait. right now it's 51 in allentown. cool start this morning. quickly warming up this afternoon. a warmer day today with a little less wind. it's nice and comfortable across south jersey. the shore points are into the upper 50s, that's about where they will stay, only climbing a degree or two once the sea breeze kicks in. ultimate doppler, clear no rain out there. expecting a nice comfortable day and it climbs into the mid 60s here by noon and it continues to climb up to near 70 degrees
9:02 am
later this afternoon. so this is the start of our warming trend. it gets even warmer pretty much everywhere except the store by the end of the weekend but we do have to put storms back in the 7-day. i'll look at that later. >> in the news right now, new this morning, police are searching for two suspects after a shooting. this happened just before 11:00. the scene is right there at 55th and market. the victim is expected to recover. >> police are trying to figure out what sparked a fire overnight in south philadelphia. firefighters were called out to the 1500 block of south broad street just before 3:30 this morning. no one was hurt. crews are working to determine the cause of another fire also in south philadelphia, thick black smoke filled the air as you can see from this video. the fire was raging out of control just before 6:00 last night at philadelphia energy

solutions on penrose avenue near gerard point. a charge pump caught fire and thankfulfully firefighters got this huge fire under control in less than an hour. >> getting better by the day. that's how the doctors are now describing people who are still recovering from that deadly train derailment. only five survivors from amtrak train 188 are still at the hospital at temple right now. two patients are still in critical condition, but doctors do expect everyone to make a full recovery. 200 passengers were taken to local hospital after last week's tragedy. the most common injuries, broken bones and lacerations. >> it's a long holiday weekend. it's the unofficial start of summer. >> it's the unofficial, the real one is like the 21st or something. but for the rest of us, it's summer. >> thousands are taking advantage of it, and they're heading down to the jersey

shore. she calls this work. sabina is in ocean city. what's going on there? >> reporter: will and -- bill and karen, this is for you. i flagged heather and mike down, i was like you guys have to meet us on the boardwalk and we ended up meeting them right in front of where they were going to have breakfast anyway. >> right. >> reporter: you've been spending summers here throughout your childhood. it's great. yesterday was a really good for the beach. we're hoping today is the same. it looks perfect. >> this is the first time on a surrey, first time on the boardwalk, what do you think? >> it's nice. it's a lot more organized than i would have thought. >> you're trying to turn and there are all these runners. >> how is it going with the
9:05 am
surrey down the boardwalk? >> it's relaxing. >> i get to sit here and let her steer. >> i saw her coming and you're steering. can you ring your bill for me? so we talked about, you guys are making brisk business. what are people getting? >> doughnuts, muffins, egg sand wishes. >> usually down the shore i like fudge and cotton candy. >> yeah. later in the afternoon people get fudge. >> all right. so what are you hearing from people? a lot of out of towners, but a good atmosphere? >> it's really nice down here, people out on the shore. they really like it down here. >> and this is your summer job, right? >> yeah. >> how old are you? >> 15. >> thanks so much.
9:06 am
what a good time. so when i was a kid we used to go down to wildwood. where did you guys go? >> i was ocean city. that was my first job just like that kid at 15. i was working at angela's pizza on the boardwalk. did you ever have a summer job down there? >> no, i never worked down here but i had friends who did, and we came here after prom and we would go up and down on wildwood with the rides. it's where we went. what about you, bill? >> i used to regularly crash with friends. they had a spot on long beach island. and we would get up and grab bikes and ride the bikes to get swedish fish. i don't know if i was supposed to admit that was breakfast, but that was how i spent my summer. >> sabina, thank you so much. if you have a place you love to go, the best place to go and get a waffle and ice cream.
9:07 am
>> you're hungry, aren't you? >> just tell us what your favorite place is down the shore or whfr you're spend your holiday weekend. >> or bring us waffles. >> let's hear what the chief has to say. >> o, my god. dramatic moments ung fold on camera. a murder suspect is seen stabbing a pregnant woman. an officer approaches the suspect and shoots him. the suspect was taken into custody. the officer is being called a hero for his bravery and actions. in this video you see a knife-wielding, violent, murder suspect, attacking a 4-month-pregnant woman. he stabs her in the chest.
9:08 am
you see the knife is about 12 inches in length. as the police officer approaches, he stabs the officer. the officer shoots the scumbag. police 1, baddy 0. thank god. that's my take. >> coming up, tough love. what would you do if you found your 13-year-old daughter posing as a 19-year-old online? would you make a video about it? that's exactly what one mom decided to do. why she says she was compelled to publicly call her daughter out. plus, we're talking basketball. the sixers are tanking, but will it be worth it? let us know your thoughts using the hashtag #fox29weekend.

consistent care in his final days. >> i'm jeff cole. it's time for fox unfiltered where we respond to your comments and complaints right here on the air. and i am sitting with the wonderful morning team here at fox 29. mike and alex and the rest of the gang. do you know why i'm here? >> if it's unfiltered, that means we've done something wrong. >> yes, you have. here we go. ilene wrote, where's the local news? you discussing youtube videos, a child crying over the nfl draft. i'm curious about the ratings. >> the ratings are really very good. but to your point, blame that dude. >> our executive producer. >> the ratings are good, but apparently you don't appreciate
9:14 am
it. >> come on, we're on from 4:00 to 10:00 a.m. we have news, we have sports, weather, and info-tainment. we're fun. >> and informative. >> do you want to hear bad news all the time? not all the time. here is the ironic part, friends and folks. the same week that we got eileen's e-mail. we got a few others. i smile when i watch your show. great show, great people. each person adds a special element. thank you, a real fan. i started to watch fox 29 when bob kelly became part of the team. i now find that i enjoy and look forward to watching my morning news. i find mike and alex and chris and sue and of course bob, great. good-bye cbs 3 philly. >> i love the letter what makes us al unique is we're a
9:15 am
different group. >> we're still family. >> well, that's ironic, that you say this issue about family. tony wrote i love watching you all in the morning. you're like one big family. that's nice. >> a dysfunctional family, but it's a family. >> hey alex, listen to what tom said. alex, you always make my day. i'm not finished. we love you being here in philly, you are truly so sweet. >> aww. >> you're sweet! >> that's really so sweet that he said that and i love the day, i love the fox family here, i'm having a great time. i especially love the viewers, love their feedback because they say what they mean. >> okay. before we wrap up this lovely love fest, two photo bombs.
9:16 am
she calls tessa mike's number one fan. she took this photo in front of the tv this week on her birthday, she turned 10. she loves watching you every morning before school. >> that's great. i apologize for my gigantic bloated head in that picture. not much that i can do about it. >> okay one more. my friends are cooler than your friends. coolest anchor in the city. >> well, i'm supposed to say i'm not an anchor, i'm just a lowly reporter. i'm not allowed in the building. that's why we had to shoot this in a bar. i take probably 50 pictures a day and that's the part of my day that makes me appreciate this job more than anything because you reach people and thesh 'so happy to see you, even if you're on a bad scene, and a bad story. there's still a smile somehow in
9:17 am
life. >> i would like to thank you guys for taking part in fox unfiltered this weekend. certainly made my day. >> share any time, jeff. >> i'm glad you like it. i just want to tell everybody look, we realize that we are not perfect. but we work pretty hard at doing a good show. >> we do? >> do you wake up that early? >> fun and family and some news and we try to be informative and that's what this is. >> that's unfiltered for this week. i'm jeff cole. >> take a look outside. there's the good day gang. >> i love how that segment ended. that's so keeley. he's so next when you meet him. >> the secret is he loves your kids, he particularly loves your animals. i do want to get a birthday
9:18 am
shout out. here's a great thing do today, the philly pops will be opening up their season and playing at longwood gardens. >> i got one a quick shout out to rohan celebrating his birthday today. there's a lot going on in the world. we're going to get to that, but first we've got a question. >> on behalf of arnold, we are going to have a picnic from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. for most bananas eaten in a group. we were wondering what the weather will be like today. >> we have to throw a banana eating picnic in there today. it's a contest in landsdale tomorrow. i'll send my kids there. you'll have to buy more bananas. this is montgomery county. this is the tomorrow forecast,
9:19 am
you can see it really warms up between today and tomorrow. so a nice change in our weather. let's talk about the weather today. the future cast showing that we are all clear. the temperatures continue to climb just a bit today. we'll be close to 70 degrees, going from 60, up to 60 by this afternoon. there is one little change. you'll hear about the warm weather, if you're down the shore it will not be affecting you. temperatures climbing up to 80 in the suburbs, tomorrow there's that sea breeze, so the warm weather is everywhere but right along the coast.
9:20 am
it is warm and humid, three days of 90 degree temperatures, tuesday, wednesday and thursday, but each day there could be a shower or thunderstorm. best chance for that will be late in the week. >> this is your tech byte from the tech tank. today we're going to talk about emulation. now, what is that? it's actually making your computer think that it's something that it's not. today we're going to have a little fun, though. the computer is going to think it's a nintendo entertainment system. we're going to download a little software application which will make the computer act like a nintendo system. purchasing a pad off of amazon now, you plug it in, and this little flash drive can actually hold all the games from 1978 to your early '90s. so let's check out playing some
9:21 am
super mario. but let's say you're not a mario fan. sonic the hedgehog, the list goes on and on whatever you want to play. we can make it happen. but make sure you own the games you're playing, otherwise you're committing software piracy. reach out to us, and we can continue the conversation online. >> we want to get your opinion about this one, see what you think. i think these cars are very cool. have you heard about this one? the new vehicles on new jersey highways, patrolling the roads for this holiday weekend. some people love them, some people don't. they are calling them ghost cars. let us know what you think. >> it's a holiday weekend, and police will no doubt looking for drunk drivers. a new app aims to help people
9:22 am
who are pulled over for drunk driving. >> we're taking a live look there at a bethany beach camera. good morning to you.
9:23 am
9:24 am
9:25 am
welcome back. thank you for sharing your pictures. we do love to get to each and every one we possibly can. a really cute one, of course the reason for the holiday weekend. people will be remembering and honoring and thinking about all the people who have served our country and lost their lives for us. so many parades this weekend in our communities. and we have my bird trying to get into my parents house in margate, thank you. that's funny. next i'll be sending you my chickens. this is my brother, what's that? sorry, i can't hear you because of the waves. they're making fun of me because they're at the beach, and i'm right here with you which is where i would like to be spending my saturday morning. >> that's just mean. >> karen will be joining us shortly. that was a little tough love. like my segue? coming up, tough love. what would you do if you found
9:26 am
your 13-year-old daughter posing online as a 19-year-old. would you make a video about it? it's a holiday weekend, police will no doubt be looking for drunk drivers. a new app aims to help people who are pulled over and we'll explain how it works.
9:27 am
9:28 am
9:29 am
>> welcomes back. faeg a look at your news right now at 9:29. there's going to be a lot of extra police vehicles on our highway, specifically in new jersey. you may not even notice because of these new cruisers they just put out on the roads. i think they look cool, what do you think? the new jersey state police are calling them ghost cars. they're going to be used to catch people if you're speeding. they're the typical black chevrolet caprices. the idea is to be able to weave in and out and find people. what do you think about that? there's also this new app
9:30 am
being talked about right now, it's designed with people in mind who may have overindulged or they're in a situation they may be in fear. it could come in handy if you get pulled over. the app is called dui dialer. if you get pulled over, you press the button, it records the audio and alerts an attorney. >> we basically provide efficient contact with an attorney. >> there has been a lot of criticism for that. it may not be legal in a state like pennsylvania. the creators understand there's criticism and they say there's a need for this app. the app currently is not available in our area. >> and this morning, guys, shifting gears a little bit.
9:31 am
we're talking about our sixers. they've been tanking. their report only slightly higher than chase utley's batting average. but will the pain lead to pleasure? we asked online if the tanking has been worth it. people have been immediately responding. it's been worth it because we get potential superstars instead of a first round knockout every year. to discuss it, joining us live this morning, john marks. good morning, sir. we had to bump karen out because she's a sixers hater. is the tanking worth it? >> will, karen we've talked about this many times. karen, no. she wants basketball that she can watch on the court where it is entertaining and they win games. i understand that. to win in the nba you need to have players that could play. the sixers didn't really have
9:32 am
players that could play. how do you build a time like that? they decided they were going to be bad for a couple of years and draft young players that could play and that's what they did. i have high praise for the sixers. they won games in the last two seasons. but i think it's actually time that you're going to see in 2015 a team that has some growth to start with, and it starts with their draft pick this year. and some of the guys they've drafted previous years as well. >> as bad as they've been, you get through the draft last week. you come in, you now have excitement. i'm thinking about getting my season tickets back and going with the sixers. is the excitement there? >> it's there for me but it has to happen on the court. and the daily news had a poll. 19 writers said is the tanking worth it and ten of them said no. which surprised me, because what's the alternative to it.
9:33 am
this is the only thing you can do. i don't know what else people wanted the sixers to do. it stinks right now. it's not a lot of fun to watch. this year will be the first year you can watch it and say wow, there's a lot of promise for the future. >> i listen to your show. you talk about the writers, but are what are the callers saying? >> i would say most of the people are on board and the moment it doesn't work people will be quickly off board. there's a buffer. we're giving them a couple of years to get this right but at some point they have to start winning games. it may not be next year, but you have to look to 2017. karen doesn't want to hear that. she wants to see it this year. it doesn't mean it's going to work, either. it doesn't mean there's going to be a championship. but you have a chance and before you didn't have much of a chance of doing anything in being pretty good. >> in chip we trust, who do you
9:34 am
think has the better plan for? >> chip kelly right now, the eagles are ready to win right now. are they good enough to win the super bowl this year? probably not but they're the closest of any of the teams. next, the sixers they have no chance this year or next year, but 2018, they're built to win for the long haul. chip kelly might be out of here in three years. so honestly the most confidence of an organization, right now with me is the sixers. >> i'm philly strong, i love seeing our teams going in the right direction. check him out on 97.5. are you on board with the tanking? you can leave your comments on our fox 29 facebook page. tweet us and use the hashtag
9:35 am
#fox29weekend. >> i wanted to mention over. >> a book fair is this saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. what's the weather going to be like? >> it looks good there. a little cool this morning but the event starts at 11:00 so by then the temperatures are warming up nicely. with that sunshine it was off to a cool start, 58, calm and cooler, 65 by 2:00 and by 6:00 not nearly as windy, up to 68 degrees. nice and comfortable there. just a light breeze out there today. not nearly as windy as it was yesterday afternoon. 55, very, very dry air. the humidity is down. we're starting the weekend nice and comfortable as far as the
9:36 am
humidity goes. it will not end that way. the humidity is back and that's followed by showers and storms by as early as monday. 51 degrees in pottstown, 55 in philadelphia, there's the warm-up today. 50s at the shore but not nearly as warm inland along the coast. the sea breeze will kick in today. the sea breeze keeps the temperatures down. the ocean water temperature is at 59 degrees. temperatures will drop there considerably. much cooler, as opposed to areas inland and that's where we're talking about the heat and humidity coming back and highs near 90. now you'll see the clouds coming in on monday. humidity is here and we start our 90 degree stretch. the latest information looks like showers and storms holding off a bit staying just to our west on tuesday. but here wednesday, thursday and friday. could be a heat wave with three
9:37 am
days of 90 degree temperatures by thursday and it could get a little cooler with that rain coming in on friday. that's the best chance for showers and storms. >> coming up, we've been talking about this throughout the day. it's tough love. karen, you're a parent. do you see yourself doing something like this. >> i hate this. i hate when you shame your own kids. but what would you do if you found your 13-year-old daughter posing as a 19-year-old online? would you make a video about it? well, that is exactly what one mom did. a lot of you like it. why she says she was compelled to publicly call her daughter out. >> and plus, this shocking story has been all over social media. shocking revelations about a reality tv family and what tlc plans to do with 19 kids and counting following allegations of sex abuse. all that and more coming up right after the break on fox 29 weekend.
9:38 am

9:40 am
>> if you're a guy and you have untreated sleep apnea, you have
9:41 am
a dramatically increased risk of developing depression. if you're married to someone who has or you think has sleep apnea and they're not doing anything about it, you better make sure they get treated. it will help with their depression. men who are elderly and move their bones and and get off their butts will actually live longer than if they're sedentary. so if you have someone out there that you care about and they're getting older, make sure they exercise and take care of themselves. there's lots of controversy about whether men should be tested for prostate cancer using something called the psa. in fact, new research indicates that doctors like me, primary care providers, are actually doing less and less of it. i happen to disagree with that. you need to have a long discussion with your doctor about whether the psa is right
9:42 am
or not. i'm dr. mike. have a great weekend.
9:43 am
9:44 am
>> good morning, everyone. just about 9:45 on fox 29 weekend. we'll take a look at what's trending this morning. the elementary schoolteacher writes to her student is going viral. >> this is a letter that was sent home right before they had
9:45 am
to take a big test down in north carolina and there's standardized testing. the scores will tell you how you did but will not tell you everything. there are so many ways to be smart and you are smart. you are enough. the parent of one of the students says this letter -- this made her cry. she says it's a perfect example of how educators can go above and beyond with something simple to make every student feel special. so a lot of you are commenting on our facebook page. >> make each child know not everyone can take tests as well as another. my fourth grade teacher did this back in 1980. i still remember what she wrote. short and simple but really touched me to remember this 35 years later, that's very sweet.
9:46 am
what an awesome thing for her to do for her students. too much pressure put on children today over academic testing. this teacher thought enough of her students to take the time to make sure each and every one of them knew how unique they are. >> i love when you applaud teachers stepping up and do the right thing. >> you probably heard about the duggar family. the stars of the show 19 kids and counting. tlc has pulled the show avenue the air. the oldest duggar josh allegedly sexually assaulted three of his siblings and one other woman when he was 14 years old. the report claims that his wife and family knew about his actions but they claim the incident drew them closer to god. no matter how old he was, he knew the difference between right and wrong. they should practice what they
9:47 am
preach. the truth always comes out. they actually are criticizing us. they say this happened when he was 14. how can the media obtain records for something that happened when he was a minor. i don't watch the show, but the media seems to love poking into other people's business. you can keep your comments coming. >> this is a story that's also played on social media. it's no secret of parents, mostly of teenagers, there's one mom who decided to do something about it. she caught her 13-year-old pretending to be 19 on facebook and the girl even posted pictures of herself in lingerie. it turned out the mom wanted to set an example because she made a lot of wrong choices in her life. she's a convicted felon and didn't want her daughter to turn out the same way she did. so she posted this video. >> you still wear panties that
9:48 am
say monday, tuesday, wednesday. but you go on facebook and find a picture that says that you a freak and you wearing panties and all that. that's what 13-year-olds do, right? you still watch the disney channel, tell them. tell them you still watch the disney channel. >> the mom is forcing her daughter to admit that she's really still a kid. this clip has gotten 12 million views and counting. some applaud it and some are critical saying it's going to harm that mother-daughter relationship. hundreds of you commented on our facebook page. sometimes hard discipline might help them save them from society. in this day and age tough love is the only way. it's better than the mom having to identify her child at the morgue. solomon, what did you think? >> i watched the video. i thought that it was a -- it
9:49 am
was a bit much. i think that shaming has always been a tool. that, along with guilt. but when you get into cultural shifts, when you get into societal shifts and when you get into technology, sometimes it can go too far. when you have millions of people looking at this video and seeing this child shamed in ways that kind of go beyond that specific incident talking about her father being a deadbeat dad, talking about her bathroom habits, talking about what kind of panties she wears. i think it's a bit much. i understand that every child is different and every relationship is different. i think that it was a good intention, but i think that it went a bit far. >> i'm not a fan of this public humiliation of people's children and putting it out there. i don't like to see that when it is so public like that.
9:50 am
did you think that this mom went too far in terms of that? would it be different? a lot of people shame their kids out of guilt? would it be different if you keep it within the group or within the family. >> i think it is different in the family. if you do it in this public way, it's like you're grandstanding. like you're trying to make yourself look like you're so much better than this kid. and i think that it can do harm long-term. i understand the mother's intentions. i read what she talked about, loving her child and not wanting her child to make the same mistakes that she did. but when you do this in such a public way, when you put things out into the public where millions of people can see it, sometimes you exposure child to unintended consequences and i'm afraid that's something that might happen here. >> i think this can do a lot of psychological damage. who wants to be embarrassed like that? solomon, thank you so much for that. we've got a lot of tweets, people saying exactly what you're thinking as well. we appreciate it and of course
9:51 am
we catch you every single week listening to your show on the radio. what are you doing for the memorial day weekend? >> i'll probably go to ocean city, new jersey. i'm going to go to a birthday party tonight, we'll probably take the family to ocean city, probably eat a lot of junk and feel guilty about it, speaking of guilt and shame. but we'll probably do something like that. >> it sounds like a great time and a lot of fun. >> a lot of comments coming in for that. so you can keep them coming. all the things he's going to be doing enjoying this holiday weekend. taking a look outthere -- out there in old city. can people start to get out, start to enjoy this day? >> they should be doing it already. if they do get out early enough, it's just a little cool. temperatures dropped into the 30s, well north for that. chilly, that might be what you're thinking here today. 44 in mount pocono. starting to warm up a bit. we were in about 10 degrees of
9:52 am
record lows especially to the north. it was cool, unseasonably cool for this time of year. a lot of people wondering will it warm up, like our friend cathy, it's her birthday. having a party. certainly wondering what it will be like at 6:00 today. you will feel the temperatures warming up at 6:00. warming up a little bit, the upper 60s, close to 70. so that is the start. we will see temperatures near 70 pretty much everywhere except right along the coast. that sea breeze starts to kick in today, it's there again tomorrow and here is the future cast for monday. showers and storms approaching from the west. it's pulling up some very warm and muggy air ahead of it. so the heat and humidity are back everywhere by the end of the weekend. look at the coast there, that greenish, yellow color, that's temps only into the 50s and 60s. the air comes in off the ocean and it keeps the temperatures from getting anywhere near 70.
