8:00 am
sunday. it is an absolutely gorgeous day today. it is promising to be a 10 i think. so we will check officially what we think. i'm karen hepp along with bill anderson. >> if you're not following us on facebook, instagram or twitter, you're missing out. we'll get to that shortly. >> we do have a lot of news to get to. breaking news right now out of salem county. police are searching for a hit and run driver. we've been telling you about too many of these kinds of cases. this one a teenager was struck and dragged overnight. there is a specific car that investigators want your help with to try and find. >> it could be the biggest
8:01 am
computer hack ever. millions of people could be affected and this morning we're turning to our tech expert for answers. what you need to think about is coming up straight ahead. first, as karen said, so far starting off it appears to be a beautiful day. looking out on center city. sun is up, people are already out enjoying themselves. dave, is it going to hold up? >> it is my duty to show you that it could be like a 10 now, but close. we're only up to a 9. you have to wait. it's the afternoon. the wind will pick up. it will be a bit breezy. i'm a golfer. i notice it kind of affects your game a little bit. it's sternly starting off great. these gusts picking up to 20, 25 miles per hour. this will be late in the day all out of the southeast. enjoy it now, you'll notice this especially in the northern suburbs. just below 80 degrees.
8:02 am
we're starting off into the 60s. almost down into the 40s in allentown, we're warming up nicely now. mid to low 60s. climbing to upper 60s and holding steady. airport, nice shot this morning, that wind is out of the east. picture coming in, beautiful sunrise over philadelphia. they're taking off at the airport most likely going east into that wind so a nice start into the day. mid 70s by noon with plenty of sunshine. there's that noticeable breeze picking up this afternoon 10, 20 miles per hour with higher gusts up to 78 degrees. today is a nice one, enjoy it. no where near a 10 tomorrow. we have severe weather moving in and i'll look at that coming up with the 7-day forecast. >> we're breaking news from salem county this morning. a 17-year-old is fighting for his life after being struck by a
8:03 am
car overnight and police are looking for the driver. >> sabina is live in pennsville where it happened. this is an alarming trend. the fourth person in the past couple of months. what do we know about this case? >> reporter: very sad. a 17-year-old high school student. he just got out for summer break. he's going to be a senior in the fall. take a look. this where it happened, the scene here along north hook road. police say it happened just before 2:00 this morning. they say the 17-year-old was going northbound here on north hook road skate boarding down the street when a car going in the same direction struck him and fled the scene. neighbors say they heard the commotion, they saw the teen in the road and called for help. the police chief tells us they did find a piece of the taillight of the car. they don't know what colt or it
8:04 am
is. here's the chief telling us what happened and what they know about this car so far. >> the car struck him and fled the scene. we found a part here on the side of the road, i ran it on the internet and it came back to a hyundai elantra. so we're looking for a hyundai elantra with front end damage. >> reporter: investigators are triifg to pick up whatever they can. this teenagers in critical condition. we don't have an update on his condition but the police chief tells us it is not looking good right now. this teenager out here in 2:00 in the morning on his skateboard. we did ask the police why he thinks the kid was out here. it probably wants the best idea, he was on the side of the road, he was perfectly legal.
8:05 am
the car that struck him and took off and left the scene. that's who they're looking for right now. >> from that very sad story to this one. we've got an update on the tragedy that happened in allentown. we now know that charges are not expectd in connection with this case of a child who fell from that fourth story window. police say there was a three-year-old and she died. her sister, in critical condition right now. a five-year-old. after they broke a screen and they fell out of the window on friday night. you know a screen can't keep you in the window right there. there was a cell phone video of a pretty chaotic scene. the neighbors came out, they had a big vigil. this is a transitional apartment building. the children and the mother had been living there. the mother was home and the neighbors think she's not to blame in this case. others did question maybe the safety of the building. >> i see the mom and the children every day and she was a
8:06 am
good mother and she was probably busy in the house doing something. >> this is not good. there's no window guards at this window. but yet this is a building for families. this is ridiculous. >> she brings up a good case in southern jurisdictions and in certain towns you need to have a window guard. it's not clear if that was the case in this building. they had a window lock though apparently that prevented the window opening for more than 6 inches so they're going to investigate how that all happened. >> and we're learning new information this morning about a shooting in germantown. our crew was there just moments after it happened. we know the victim is a teenager. the 17-year-old was shot almost a dozen times. he managed to walk nearly a block away to get help. at last cheng he's in critical condition and anyone with information should call police
8:07 am
right away. >> it is 8:06 and new this morning, there's a man recovering after being shot. this happened in kiensington. he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. police are looking for a gunman. >> police need your help searching for this man. charles branch was last seen friday evening in the 1600 block of 78th street. he sofrs from dementia. he's known to frequent the area near 19th and jefferson street and anyone with information please contact the police. >> happening today, you can check out 40 luxury condos going up for auction in atlantic city for maybe fire sale prices at the end of this month. have you ever dreamed of having an ocean view condo near the sea? you can most of them wonderfully
8:08 am
decorated on gorgeous high floors. they have beautiful kitchens, state-of-the-art fitness facility and year-round heated pool plus two blocks from the beach. many originally sold for $500,000 and $600,000 and $800,000. they were most recently selling for $200,000 and now they can be yours for who knows. they're going to be up for auction at the end of the month. it will be over at the borgata at june 28th at 11:00 a.m. how exciting was that? history made american far the horse making the history the at belmont. he became the 12th horse to win the triple crown. it's just so excited. let's look at some of the comments right now. i don't want horse racing much
8:09 am
but there are few more exciting events than triple crown events. congrats american pharoah. congratulations american pharaoh. beautiful, beautiful horse. >> we told you yesterday, buy one ticket, place your bet and it would make history. >> i'm going to buy you a cup of tea. >> i'll get this straight during the break. still ahead on fox 29 weekend. we know all too well the power of system. and you may have seen this picture on your news feed. what's the story behind this officer and a baby and why the woman who took the picture wanted to share it with the world. >> plus also, two convicted murderers escaping from prison and how they did it. the trick they used to pull this
8:10 am
thing off and what's being done right now to find them. we'll be back.
8:11 am
8:12 am
8:13 am
>> good morning. 8:13. a major man hunt is under way this morning after two convicted killers escaped from a maximum security prison in new york. they broke out of the clinton correctional facility near the canadian border sometime between friday night and early saturday morning. the two were in adjoining cells. they used dummies to trick the guards and they somehow got ahold of power tools and drilled a hole through the back of their cells, walked on to a catwalk and they climbed down to use tools to drill through a maze of pipes to escape through a manhole. it really does sound like it's out of a movie. >> unrelated back on fox. in our cover story this morning,
8:14 am
the fbi is investigating what may be the biggest hack ever. this could be 4 million people investigators are blaming china, of course the country denies involvement. zbl we're seeing some of the agencies aren't even following their own best practices. >> as a business owner everyone is expected for security and you will get fined yet time and time again we're finding that the government has the same problems that all of us do which is extremely scary. >> what happened here? >> they haven't released all the information yet. but any time you read a report on information security that says these records kofsh stolen it means they already know what happened. there had to be some loophole
8:15 am
somewhere, i'm guessing it has to be china grabbed the information and it probably happened months and months ago and we're just finding out now. >> what's so scary is many people are predicting they could be gathering a database to use against some of these people. is that what you would suspect could happen in a case like this? >> absolutely. once you build a profile of someone, once you get their e-mail, once you get their name, then you can start tying other pieces together. you can look at social media accounts such as facebook, you can try to hack in and they can biild a scary profile and access more information and more secrets about government employees. >> this comment from michael. dispickable. they have an obligation to protect our information. you instruct us to list every intimate detail of our lives and let china take whatever information they want. their intent is more nefarious
8:16 am
than that. has anybody at this office of personnel management looked at the bigger picture. the personnel management could be people who have secret identities and such. >> and given the fact that a high level of clearance, these guys could need life protection, because guess what? if you hack a database that has their home address and cell phone number, it's going to be real easy to find these people. >> what do you think when you see a case like this? the if the government isn't protecting its own employees, it's very, very scary. >> there's really two things that scare me about this. one, the fact that this just got announced. how many other times and how many other agencies have been hacked and two, what people need to realize, everyone thinks of war and bombing and gunning and
8:17 am
all that. our nuclear systems, our power plants, everything is connected through technology. this going to be the type of warfare in the future. we need to protect ourselves and make a big push for suber security. >> we all have to take that into account and i don't even know. i mean, if the terrorists are going to get in i don't think there's much you can do to protect yourselves. is there anything you can do? >> there's nothing that you can do other than make sure your windows updates are applied and things like that. we need our government to step up. >> wow. and be selective with the information you share out there. that's scary. thank you karen for that. and thank you for what looks like, taking a look out there at the airport, looks like a pretty nice day. there's a lot of events.
8:18 am
first we've got this weather request. >> i'm asking about weather for the shore on monday and tuesday of this week. thank you and i'm so glad you're on fox 29. and yes, i do want my t-shirt. >> we can work on that. and i'm glad to be here in great company, of course. you're talking about the shore. nothing like yesterday, today's a little cooler, tomorrow and tuesday will be the same. cape may county, wildwood new jersey. a cool breeze, breezy and cool on monday and just a few showers on tuesday. if you don't mind the wind coming off the ocean, not all that bad along the coast. there's a nice boardwalk craft show in cape may as well. a lot of activities everywhere you go.
8:19 am
we have much warmer air coming up into the 80s. except on the north coast. a warm day with stormy weather moving in. cooler from atlantic city, ocean city, cape may should only be into the upper 60s tomorrow. the temperatures will start out in the low to mid 60s. the numbers are climbing into the mid to low 60s to the south. that's about where they will stay. doppler is clear but our concern tomorrow will be the doppler. it will be active in the afternoon. here comes a line of storms not affecting the area in the morning but by tomorrow evening, this could be some severe weather coming in when you start to see these lines developing, that's an indication that these storms could be organized with gusty winds and hail. we are in a risk for severe weather. that slight risk area has expanded a bit and comes into
8:20 am
the western suburbs. they issue these when there will be thunderstorms and a few of them have the possibility to be severe. the weather today just a bit breezy. the wind picks up 10 to 20 miles per hour. almost a perfect day, a light breeze. it could be higher in the western suburbs. you don't have that chill in the air tomorrow morning and just a light breeze out of the south at 10 miles an hour. 7-day forecast is 90s along with the storms coming in. >> still ahead we've got a serious topic to talk about but it's a really important one. a very serious issue especially for military families. suicide can be really difficult when you return. some of the report you need may be in danger coming down. >> a father of two fallen sons will share that story with us. it's graduation season and the class of 2015 is looking for work. there may be some interesting
8:21 am
jobs out there. and the application process is a little unique. >> all right. you better explain that one. >> we'll have that coming back.
8:22 am
8:23 am
welcome back. what a great day in our city. the bike race kicks off at 8:00 a.m. it's going to be the
8:24 am
men going first this year. how's this for timing. these are the first racers they get top billing but here are some of the first races you can expect. certainly the police coming around. so we have this live picture out there. go down and enjoy that and we will show you the sights. thank you for sending in your pictures. she asks you to go out what happened? >> i was working. >> i was working. okay, cathy. we love you. she got a t-shirt because she sent us a video and asked us the
8:25 am
weather. let's see what howard is grousing about today. >> time now for knocking the king. >> i'm bobby from jersey. i hear what you have to say about tim tebow. >> he is a quarterback that never really made it in the nfl. was also out of football for two years. my head is exploding with all this chatter. tim tebow had the 15th highest selling jersey in the nfl in the month of may. do you believe that? why? because it will be a collectors item when the season starts. >> watch that playoff game and watch for the 80-yard bomb to win the game. the eagles got sanchez, they've got bradford, what else do they have to lose. >> bobby. you are, can i say this gently, clueless. a tim tow bow, an 80-yard bomb?
8:26 am
how about a 14-yard pass where the pittsburgh defense clansed where there was nobody in the secondary and the receiver ran the rest of the yards. he was lucky because the steelers were stupid. if you look in at list season in the nfl with the jets, no touchdowns, no interceptions. he can't play, he's a great guy. but to compare him to bradford and sanchez, are you out of your mind? buy a jersey. wear it to sleep at night. because that's the only time you're going to be close to tim tebow, during this coming season. bobby! get a clue. think you have what it takes to knock the king? shoot your video and send it to us and i'll see you next week.
8:27 am
i'm whoopi goldberg and new york is my home. there's no place like it in the world, and no better place to lean about the people who shaped who we are today. hear about the lives of slaves in colonial new york and about the fight to abolish slavery. pick a stop on the underground railroad and visit the home and grave

8:30 am
school arriving out on summer break. a hyundai elantra was traveling in the same direction, struck the teenager and injured him badly. we do have video to show you from investigators were outat the scene. just combing through this area looking for any clues as to what may lead to the car involved in this hit and run. they were able to pick up a piece of a taillight we're told and that's what led them to believe this was a hyundai elantra. this is a 17-year-old teenager. pretty late for a young kid to
8:31 am
be out so here's what the police chief told us. >> well, it's 1:50 in the morning. i'm not really sure where this gentleman was going or coming from but obviously this is a heavy traveled road at night. it's kind of dark back here and dangerous. >> all right. and back here live again, police right now talking to witnesses, searching for a hyundai elantra with front-end damage as this kid remains in critical condition at the hospital. >> he did in 46 years what most of us couldn't do in 146. he left nothing in the tank. >> that's president obama remembering beau biden. the former attorney general and son of vice president joe biden
8:32 am
was laid to rest yesterday. more than a thousand people gathered for the funeral mass of saint anthony of padua church in wilmington. he died last week at 46 of brain cancer and his brother and sister spoke on behalf of the family. >> to me my brother is not defined by his extraordinary resume. he's defined by the quality of his character. the man who always held you close. >> beau biden was a member of the army national guard and he served in iraq. he was the army -- the army chief of staff served with him and presented biden with the legion of merit. for more images you can go to our website. you'll find the story on our home page. >> that was such a powerful celebration of his life yesterday. take a look at our interactive

weather today. absolutely gorgeous, we see some people walking around the constitution center today. beautiful. let's get to this weather question. >> i'm brandon rogers and this sunday i'll be graduating from philadelphia college of osteopathic medicine. >> congratulations. looking pretty good if you're out there early enough, little chill but by the time you start the ceremony it's warming up through the 60s, heading for the upper 7 0s. we'll be very warm today just a light breeze. notice the temperature might drop between 4:00 and 5:00. it certainly looks like a great day with mostly clear skies and just a light breeze across the area. the current temperatures we'll go county by county. still in the 50s. lehigh valley is just a little cool. down to the upper 40s this morning. warming up through the 60s here across i-95.
8:34 am
a little farther south we're into the mid to low 60s. we'll warm up a bit and drop quickly. that wind will pick up off the ocean later today and that will keep those temperatures down. look at these wind gusts. 20, 25 miles an hour. this is by 7:00, 8:00. so a near perfect day today. sunshine, low humidity, but you may notice that breeze picking up especially late in the afternoon and evening. doppler all clear, no rain today but there will be storms tomorrow. 11:00 tonight, clouds will be increasing. here comes a line of severe storms. timing of this tomorrow looks like between 4:00 and 6:00. it does try to get organized here kormg a line so we could have strong winds with this. there is potential for these storms to be severe. so watch the radar, be aware of the updates coming in between 4:00 and 6:00. these storms will be rolling through and lingering throughout the day on tuesday. the area has expanded to some of our western counties. it is likely we'll see one or
8:35 am
two strong to severe storms here throughout the day tomorrow. seven-day forecast shows the storms tomorrow, showers linger tuesday, here's the hot and humid weather. almost a stretch of three days in a row but getting cooler on friday. possibly not quite a heat wave. the upper 80s there on friday and saturday. more storms with the heat and humidity kind of lingering here throughout much of the seven-day forecast. just not today. go out and enjoy this nice weather. >> you're wimping out and calling it a heat wave. >> complete confidence that we will be cooler on friday. >> we love you, dave. thank you so much. so what do we love here at fox 29 weekend? >> you. >> no, that's not what i meant. babies. >> babies. >> babies, animals and beer. >> and beer. >> so i have to show you, this is a baby, a photo of a police officer in kansas. this is getting attention all around the world right now. >> it happened after a quick-thinking artist captured a
8:36 am
moment between a man and a baby. >> reporter: a picture of an overland park police officer was taken here at oak park mall. today officer andy black and jilly nel met for the first time. >> i could see the paramedics putting the lady on to the stretcher. >> reporter: officer black has been working off duty at the mall for 25 years. he was working saturday when he got the call. >> by the time i got there, the lady had recovered somewhat and was sitting on the seat. had a small baby in a carrier at her feet. >> reporter: he says the woman was very disoriented. >> i was afraid she would drop the baby. >> she had the baby and was putting a bottle in her mouth and when she gave her to me she handed me the bottle. the baby started crying. i'm a grandpa.
8:37 am
i took the bottle. >> he was holding this tiny bundle of joy, feeding her. >> reporter: black has 12 grandchildren and two adopted grandchildren. this wasn't his first rodeo. >> it was so beautiful. it touched my heart so much i had to stop and ask him if i could take a picture. >> reporter: nell is an artist. she says this moment melted her heart. she decided to share the picture on facebook. it has since gone viral and both officer black and nell have gotten messages from all over. >> some people have turned it into this was a set-up photo. it wasn't. it was a pure moment. >> nell says lately there has been many stories regarding cops and racism. this picture shows a different story. >> these are just people and they've got hearts too. >> and that was melissa stern reporting. >> i love seeing stories like
8:38 am
that. because there has been so many negativity. to see police officers doing what they do. >> i got more babies for you. i've got royal babies. the royal family releasing some of the first official photos of the little baby girl princess charlotte one month old. the palace, i actually follow the palace. they tweeted them out yesterday. not taken by a professional. look at that. taken by mom taking the pictures. princess charlotte was born last month and of course she is fourth in line to the throne. >> and karen is happy now. >> a lot of us that are baby lovers. ur breakthrough in the fight against cancer. >> a new treatment that could save millions of lives. >> a strip club under fire.

down. so get used to it. >> in your health news this morning, we have some pretty big news. u.s. officials are ramping up the flu vaccines for next year. the flu shot for 2014 to 2015 was the least effective in ten years according to the cdc. the vaccine was only 19% effective at preventing the flu. next season's will contain two flu strains. they're hoping it will be a better match to the viruses that are out there circulating. the cdc recommends that everybody six months and older get a flu shot every year. >> and of course it is one of our favorite segments every week. it's our junior reporter sigment because we get the opportunity to spend some time with the best and the brightest from around the area. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> this week, you dig into a lot
8:48 am
of different topics. this one is a lot of people need to learn about. >> this week i spoke with a congressman who said suicide is an epidemic. a suicide hotline based in new jersey. the program is in serious danger of shutting down and the father of two fallen sons explained to me how vital this program is. >> about 10:30 at night we got the call i remember leaving a camping trip. >> reporter: general mark graham recalled the phone call. >> i didn't know that you could die from being so sad. our son was sad but he was more than sad. >> reporter: troubled with depression, rotc cadet lost his fight to suicide. eight months later tragedy devastated his family again. >> this time it was his oldest

written to the pentagon asking defense secretary to reconsider. >> we have an epidemic in our military community of suicides. >> reporter: the va reported that 22 veterans take their life every day. >> reporter: these are people that have served their nation and are preserving the freedoms that we value here at home. we cannot just forget about them. >> reporter: general graham urges soldiers, veterans and family members to call the hotline. a resource kevin never had. >> there is help. call. call vets for warriors. this is the land of the free because of the brave. >> obviously they need help. so is the best thing for us to do just to tweet and spread the message? >> exactly. we need to get the word out. tweet about it, contact your state representative and we need to make sure that the pentagon funds programs like vets for warriors. >> we need to get that information out there so you can leave us your comments. you can tweet, just make sure
8:51 am
you use the hashtag #fox29weekend. >> it is exactly 8:50. let's take a live look outside. we have so many beautiful events. nascar is happening today but first we've got this weather question. >> this is john mcblane. we invite everyone to come out this sunday from 11:00 to 5:00, right here in delaware county. hey dave, how's the weather? >> i love giving the forecast to delco, born and raised, been to that park many times. picked a great day for this. rose tree park. 70 degrees at 11, 76 at 2:00, 76 with a light breeze by the end of the festival. so it looks pretty good. plenty of sunshine, just a little windy towards the end.
8:52 am
right now it's the upper 50s. pottstown, allentown, 64. the winds will start to pick up out of the southeast. that's that wind gusting. that will bring in cooler air as far as philadelphia. it may actually drop a little bit later today. bike races all clear. we'll vl showers and strong storms moving in. here's the timing. you may wake up to clouds in the morning. this is the moisture coming in from the south. you'll feel that humidity start to increase. a front is approaching but out ahead of that you can get these lines of storms that develop. so between 6:00 and 9:00 tomorrow. it's moving from the western suburbs through philadelphia and off the coast. so in that time period we could see a strong or severe storm. very gusty wind and hail is likely with these storms as they approach from the west. today it's 78, sunny and nice. it's a 9. the only thing keeping it from
8:53 am
being a perfect 10 is the wind picking up just a little bit. showers and storms tomorrow. showers will linger on tuesday. monday and tuesday you get that rain. wednesday is a dry day but it heats up to 90. another day of 90-plus degree temperatures with the humidity. not quite as hot on friday and saturday. there are a few showers though for the start of next weekend. enjoy the day because the heat and humidity are coming back.
