7:30 am
tell us exactly what we're looking at right here. >> the church has a very proud history and has really stood for the spirit of african americans and spirit of america, charleston since 1818. a spirit of standing up for what is right, and what is true. when i say that, i mean that morris brown, the founder,
7:31 am
believed that african americans ought to be able to assemble, and worship freely, as richard allen taught in philadelphia, it is interesting that they were not aware of each other but the same sort of fever, and spirit, that richard allen had in philadelphia was the same kind of spirit and fever in morris brown. maybe that is why they became good friend. >> this comes from the documentary on the ame church featuring slain pastor and south carolina state senator clementa pinckney who died in charleston. so joining us are pastor lonnie, from the christian compassion and doctor mark tyler of mother bethel ame church. >> good to have you here. >> thank you. >> it makes your heart sick when you see that documentary. you were helping with that, right. >> he was actually talking to me, is that right. >> yes. >> bill katz and myself, sam katz cats son, went down to charleston two years ago. we interviewed 25 people.
7:32 am
when i got home, clementa was a friend of mine. i went right to the file. because we have footage. that is actually the response to the very first question i asked him. >> yeah. >> just powerful, power full piece. even in that short clip the kind of personality that he had. he could have been the president if he wanted to. magnetic. >> absolutely. >> what a beautiful service last night, mother bethel, and there are flowers out front of the steps. and we go wait a minute, shooting didn't happen here but in a way it did. >> i mean ame church began at mother bethel but we are on five continents and 39 countries. this was a blow to am e's around the world. we took it deeply personal. but we found it hit everyone else. the pastor and write talking to day. he said what touched him most was to hear pastor tim stafford from christ church last night, when said you are all not ame and he blurted
7:33 am
out, we're all ame. that is the response we have received. it is just good to know you are not out here by yourself. >> what are your thoughts as far as a response, are they coming united in faith. wire's praying for that church. it is great to see the response around the country by leaders holding prayer vigils. there has not been an outcry of violence but the joining offhanded and praying together and helping to heel and helping those families to get through some difficulty moments. >> you have 3,000 people at your church. >> yes. >> and what message will you give them especially on sunday, how do you explain it, can you? >> we can. i think right now it is important to up hold, those families to remember those families but then also to think about, every worship services that takes place around the country, we have to look at security differently. our church, has camera
7:34 am
surveillance, and every part of our building and we have a great working relationship with the district, captain robin webberly, we see people in blue outside of our church every sunday just because of the crowds we see but to keep our members safe as well. >> when it comes to the state and way things are when it comes to the church nowadays, a lot of people think on sunday there is a lot of people coming this happens in the middle of the week at bible study. should this be happening around the clock all the time anytime there is an event at a church we need to make sure there is tight security. >> in this age we live in we have to be more concerned about security. we often times about talk the church being a hospital, it is a place where people come dealing with issues to be better citizens, better mothers, fathers, husbands, and wife's. when we open the door we don't know who is sitting there. it raises the question, we have to raise security, we have to be more aware to protect our parishioners. >> pastor tyler, i know just
7:35 am
after this happened we had you on the air yesterday morning and you were saying struggled a little bit what to say to your congregation but you came up with some beautiful word last night. the last thing we need to have is somebody's faith shaken by this, how can god let that happen. how can you answer that question. >> i have been holding on to the name of the church in south caroline, it is mother's manual. for people who know the bible, emmanuel came, with a prom that is god would be with the people of israel, though dark times are coming. emmanuel means god with us. so, for me i have held on to that, it does not seem that god is with us in this situation but somehow through the tragedy i believe it. i know reverend pinckney, reverend simmons who also was killed, was really a great figure in the ame church. i didn't know until this morning that he was part of
7:36 am
that group as well. all of them preached that and i believe it as well, although we don't understand it now god is still with us. >> what a connection between these two churches, it could not be closer to the one in philly. morris brown, who founded that emmanuel church is buried at your church. >> yes, right next to richard allen, that is correct. charleston, as pastor and write talking earlier, charleston and south carolina with the am e church in philadelphia, these are the hubs, these are two of the most inportant places in the a am e church all around the world. if they don't know anything else they necessity charleston and they know philadelphia they have been central since the very beginning. so charleston and mother's manual has gone through this were, buildings have been burned down before, they have suffered an earthquake. they went through turmoil of the civil rights movement this congregation will rise again i'm confident of it. >> i saw something yesterday that someone said and it stuck with me. they said if black people or just people in general cannot
7:37 am
feel safe in the church where can they feel safe. >> absolutely, it raises question, 14 times under his administration has addressed the nation because of mass murders, columbine, movie theaters, schools, 16 times in the last, 50 years churches have been attacked with violence. so we have to really look at our sick society and continue to preach message of love but then also address some of the mental health issues that are going on in our society and deal with the issue we don't like to talk about and that is gun control as well. >> his dad gave him that gun and he had been arrested twice previously. >> yes. >> god bless you both. >> thank you so much. >> pastor tyler you will go down to charleston. >> i will attend the funeral. they need persons to come down before then, i'm just waiting, you know, we're not even two days out so right now they are still trying to grabble with
7:38 am
this. once we get a sense of that community what they want from frustrates, ame's people are standing by ready to go. >> understandable. >> we will stay in touch. >> thank you. >> taking a quick break we will be right back.
