>> this morning on fox 29 weekend a violent night in philadelphia. multiple shootings, several people dead, children injured. we have a live report. >> plus, historical or hateful. the debate over the confederate flag rages on in the wake of that deadly shooting. >> this is fox 29 weekend. >> good morning everyonely welcome to fox 29 weekend. as you can see, this is not karen hepp, not here. >> no, sir. >> good morning bill. >> karen is off this morning. want to wish everybody a happy father's day. the big question is what will the weather be like? we had a lot of rain coming through the area last night. good news it is starting to clear out. there's a live look at center city philadelphia and just a

few lingering showers this morning. had some very heavy rain last night. might run into some flooded roadways so we're watching that closely. how is the weather look? well, we have this question to get us started. >> down here in the wildwoods. the wildwoods beach challenge this weekend. >> big one. >> dave, what's the weather going to be like this weekend? >> i heard the word wildwood. it was a little windy there but they're doing a fishing competition this weekend so looks pretty good except far a small craft advisory. wind is picking up a bit there in cape may county. in wildwood we go where the temperatures are up to 79. there's a few showers this morning but by 10 o'clock clearing out. look at the sunshine we have this afternoon. 86 and 85, though. with that west wind down the shore you'll notice the temperatures are warming up quite a bit. you're not getting that sea breeze once that wind picks up out of the west.

few lingering showers across cape may. one last area where there's heavy rain, just off the coast of long beach island, atlantic city still get something moderate rain. this is some heavy rain that moved through. flooding likely here. there's a flood advisory in effect because that rain pushed out and moved through. now, this is all spinning around, the remnants of bill. this is the back edge of this rain. it's moving through south jersey and delaware. one little heavier shower there in gloucester county just moved through the area around williamstown and this is pushing east into atlantic county. this is the last of the heaviest rain that we see s it will slowly start to clear out. not much behind this. we'll see skies beginning to clear up ann little more sunshine within the next hour. 10, 11 o'clock it's gone. rain is clear. we just have some sunshine here. this is pushing the temperatures up into the upper 80's near 90 degrees. a front coming through later today so maybe an isolated shower or stronger thunderstorm. this is by about four or 5 o'clock. that's one last rain drop that we have to worry about this

weekend. if there's any more rain and what the temperatures are like this week, we'll have that in the seven-day forecast a little later. bill. >> thanks dave. taking a look at your news this morning, take a good look at these pictures that you're seeing. police say a serial robber has struck again. these are surveillance photos from a cvs store in woolwich township gloucester county. police say the man took a customer hostage friday night and demanded oxycodone from the pharmacist. he got his drugs and took off. he's believed to be the same man that held up a pharmacy in haddonfield last week and logan last month. if you know who he is, look at those pictures. please call police right away. and we're following a developing story in west philadelphia. seven adults and three children are recovering this morning after someone opened fire at a block party. now we brought you this story as breaking news last night on fox 29 news at 10:00. our own sabina joins us live. tell me someone didn't just go

out to a block party and start shooting? >> reporter: bill, that is what it looks like right now. police are still trying to figure out whether the alleged shooter had attended the block party earlier in the day or whether he just pulled up randomly and started shooting. no arrests have been made so far though several patients have been treated and released here from penn presbyterian hospital. let's take a look at video we had from the scene late last night. now, swea southwest detectives e interviewing the victims. 10 people wounded seven adults, three children. the oldest victim a 46-year-old man. the youngest an 18 month old baby girl a bullet grazed her neck. she is at chop in stable condition we are told. now, we know last night the weather was so nice, people were out barring could you go, the kids were out, well officers say somebody pulled up to a block party and opened fire with a shot gun. it appeared that he was spraying the crowd randomly as

picnic goers all ducked for covering. we're learning many of those injuries were minor aside from that 18 month old girl. she's the most serious but is in stable condition at chop. police say they don't believe the shooter was a member of the group at the party but they're not ruling out whether the suspect was there earlier in the day and came back. now, all of the victims we know were members of that block party. back here live at penn presbyterian we know most of those victims have been released from the hospital. police say that that little girl still at chop is expected to be okay. right now they are still trying to figure out exactly a motive as to why somebody would want to do this when there was just a group of adults and kids hanging out having fun enjoying the summer weather and somebody decides to ruin it all with gun violence. bill, back to you. >> thanks, sabina. hopefully we know more soon. keep us informed. also developing this morning, a similar and equally tragic story. this one happened in detroit. a shooting again at a

neighborhood block party there. this one was deadly. one person was killed and nine others hurt. no children thankful were hit. but police say the person who was killed may have been targeted and community members are outraged. >> there's kids out here. i'm livid and there's no excuse, not any excuse why no one is talking. we'll find out as much as we can but come up man up, woman up or whatever and tell us what's going on. >> so far police have not released the names of the victim. hang now we're continuing to keep you updated on a search for suspects after a shooting in philadelphia's mantua section leaves one person dead. this happened around 9:40 last night on the 3700 block of mount vernon street. police say a man was shot in the head. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. and so far there are no arrests. and another deadly shooting in philadelphia's

>> 8:11 on fox 29 weekend.takins headlines. just days after a horrific massacre a historic black church in south carolina will open its doors for worship. church services will be held just about in an hour from now at the emanuel african methodist episcopal church in charleston. this is video from that church from minutes ago. at that church nine people

were shot to death wednesday night. police say 21-year-old dylann roof confessed to the shooting saying he did it to start a race war. churches across the country are expected to ring their bells at 10 o'clock this morning in unity for the shooting victims. and the charleston church shooting is renewing a long time debate in south carolina about the confederate flag. confederate flag flies high above the south carolina capitol and one woman who wants it taken down showed up at the statehouse and placed nine american flags in the ground, one for each victim of the massacre. more than 215,000 people have signed an online petition demanding the flag be removed. >> the confederate flag is flying higher than the u.s. flag or the state flag south carolina can. >> i really want to take down the flag. i have a pickup truck and i have an extended ladder and i'm trying figure out how tall it is. >> a republican law make intersouth carolina says he'll

introduce a bill in december to remove the flag from the capitol to a nearby museum. >> in the wake that of shooting local organizations have announced a protest planned for next month progressive and community leaders gathered in center city to share plans for a million people march. it's set for july 25th in newark, new jersey. and organizers say the march will be in protest of police brutality and excessive force. >> ♪ and now a look all right interactive weather. first off we'll take a live picture. this is olde city. cloudy skies here but the rain is clearing out of the philadelphia area. still a few showers in south jersey and right along the coast. it's clearing out and that seems to be the big question here on everybody's mind, that the rain came in last night, it was very heavy, caused flooding. now there's still some flooding concerns just a few advisories but the rain's moving out so the first off we have somebody sent us a tweet

when is the rain going to stop? pretty much right now, in the next hour. it's moving out of south jersey and areas of delaware, pretty much cleared out of southeastern pennsylvania. that one heavy shower off of atlantic city, that's caused some flooding problems there, moved through right over atlantic city and the southern tip of long beach island but it's one shower moving through atlantic county there. that's the last of the heaviest rain. moving just south of the a.c. expressway just to the southeast. so, that one line of showers, the little heavier rain there in atlantic county, that's it. off the coast within the next hour. temperatures are in the mid 70's and to the south mid to low 70's. will climb to the mid 80's, near upper 90's degrees. one or two isolated storms not this widespread rain and then 89 will seem cool in the seven-day forecast. i'll slow you which day will be the hottest. that's coming up a little bit later. >> we all know that life can change in an instant it's what happens after our world is turned upside down that matters most.

one illinois woman hopes her story will help save lives. after a night of partying and drinking back in 2003, sara ponzo evans got behind the wheel of her car to drive home but she never made it. she lost control of her car and crashed. the accident nearly killed her and now with a second chance at life she wants young people across the country to hear her story and she joins us now on skype. sara, good morning. >> good morning. >> i was reading your story background. significant injuries. 40 surgeries. >> yeah. >> arm amputated. you were clinically dead at the scene. >> yeah, clinically dead on scene. high no signs of life. they called the coroner. >> and you described it as getting a -- you used to live for yourself and now you realize you need to live for other people. tell me what that means. >> right. well, you know, i was just -- back in those days when my crash happened, my crash, it will be my 12th year anniversary this year, seems like it happened yesterday,

but you know, i felt like i wanted to live for myself. i didn't care about anybody else. i just did what i wanted to do. i didn't listen to my mom. i pushed my family away and i just got caught up in the wrong group of friends. and, you know, today after my crash -- i can say my crash is probably the best thing that's ever happened to me because, you know, now i give to other people every day of my life and that makes me feel so good. >> you know, i have to ask because you said that you lived essentially selfishly. >> right. >> and when we were talking about this story, there's not a lot of sympathy generally out there for people who are involved in drinking and driving crashes. >> no. >> so, what do you say to people who don't have that level of sympathy and say this didn't have to happen. >> well, this was just a poor choice that i made. i'm not a bad person. you know, and i got caught up in a life of making poor choices. and now, you know, i realized when i was in the hospital, my mom actually grabbed my right

hand and she held it up against my bed rail and she looked down at me and she goes, do you know how lucky you are that when you woke up out of your coma the only hand that you had left wasn't handcuffed to your bed rail because that night when you chose to go out to drive drunk, you took advantage of every single person's life on the road that night. you could have woke up and found out that you killed somebody. so, that could have been the worst situation that would ever happen. and ne fortunately thank god tht wasn't a part of my plan but i didn't hurt anybody else, i was just a victim of my own drunk driving crash, so i knew that i was at the lowest point and i had to do everything that i could to give back to people. >> and that's what you've done. so, since then. >> yes. >> you're speaking to students. you're talking to them about your experience and how to change lives. tell me how uri ceased when you go in and talk to students. >> you know what, that's still the reason why i'm doing this. this will be probably my tenth

year speaking. i -- when i give a presentation, i get the goose bumps just thinking about it. you can -- just the look on the students' faces when i'm talking to them t it's -- they're eating right out of my hand for an entire hour. i have had teachers come up and tell me that i'm the best speaker they've ever seen in their career as a teacher. you know, i just knew that i had to give up my -- i had to give myself to them. when i get up in front of students, i dress in a black tank top so you can see my amputated arm and all my scars. i'm covered with scars from head to toe. and i knew that that's the first thing that i wanted to show these young teens what happened to my once beautiful body i had because of my poor choices. so, man... it's amazing. >> i wanted one more because you talk toothiness often are surrounded by friends who don't help them and you point out that your friends didn't help you. >> right. >> so, what do you tell them

about friends who are not there, not helping you make good decisions. >> you know what, i talk about the importance of true friends in my presentation and when i woke up from my coma, i was in a coma for almost three weeks, i woke up out of my coma and every single friend that i pushed my entire family away for wasn't even there. the group of people that i was out with the night that my crash happened, never showed up to the hospital. so, one thing that i learned the people that were there, that never left my side, was the people that i pushed away like they meant nothing and that was my family. you know, true friends, you know, true friends are supposed to be there, they're supposed to protect you. they're supposed to watch out for you. i had to learn the meaning of what a true friend was and that's so important in my presentation. one of my biggest messages. >> sarah we appreciate you

as we take a look at your news, your headlines, isis sympathizers continue to be arrested across the united states. so far seven people have been taken into custody this month on isis-related charges. that includes at least four within the last week. six of those seven arrested in june are charged with conspiracy to provide material support to isis and the seventh is accused of trying to stab an fbi agent. all are men and all but one are under the age of 30. federal authorities say that more arrests are likely to come. meanwhile u.s. officials are saying the fight against isis in the middle east could take years. the u.s. state department says isis is now the world's leading terrorist organization ahead of even al-qaeda. that's because of the terror group's growing size influence and unprecedented brutality. u.s. airstrikes are continuing in iraq and syria. >> ♪ >> i'm dave warren here.

we haver interactive weather. this is a live picture of the pocono mountains and looks pretty nice up there. this is the first place that's drying out. it's clearing out there but south jersey and delaware still dealing with some rain out there and we have a lot of people heading out this father's day. this tweet came to us, going with my husband and kids to the fort dix clap pell in new jersey t lovely chapel. a tribute to those who served. dealing with some rain there. that's actually right near where the radar is located. there's fort dix. not much happening in this general area but a little farther south, that's where we have a few more showers. this is the last of the rain clearing out right through atlantic county and moving into cape may county across delaware bay. there's the dover radar site picking up some rain there in sussex county. it's moving south and east, so if you're south and east of this line you could have one more shower before this rain clears out. little closeup view shows it moving right along the a.c. expressway. one or two showers moving towards cape may and there's that rain in sussex county.

so, what to expect? well, the rain ends this morning and we'll see a little more sunshine this afternoon but that might fire off a few thunderstorms later as the temperatures climb up into the upper 80's, near 90 degrees. there goes the rain. the skies clear up. there's some sunshine. by about two or 3 o'clock we'll watch a few showers approaching for the north and western suburbs. maybe a slight chance for severe weather the farther south you go. can't rule out one or two thunderstorms, not widespread rain like we had last night but they're moving through throughout this afternoon and this evening. now the temperatures today will climb into the upper 80's with a few showers and storms later. heating up on monday. there's the hot day on tuesday, hot and humid, high of 98. heat index well above 100 degrees. gets a little cooler wednesday and thursday. nice and comfortable with some rain on friday. temperature only up to 79 degrees. bill. >> thanks, dave. they laugh at me because i always get excited during the junior reporter segment. we have the best and brightest

only here at fox 29. we have talented reporters from over the area. today it's melissa from temple university. >> good morning how are you. >> you have a great story. i actually met that family before. tell us. >> they're great people, great story. a young boy was bullied in school and he stood up to his boys and now other organizations are kind of coming together and recognizing to spread awareness of what he did and get his story out there. >> everyone would start making like short people jokes and they like hurt. so, i decided to do something about it. >> i may be short but it's better than being dead or just some other words low pressure 11 year old dominic used to confront his bullies at school. dominic wall getting picked on because of his size after the side effects from the treatments in his battle against leukemia. now he's using his experience to help others. >> he wants to help other kid

kids. >> reporter: they teamed up with the nonprofit the anti-bullying squad. >> i wanted to do something special for him. >> anti-bully squad reached out to us. brandon mcmanus sent him a personal message. >> reporter: dominic heading up kick for a cause. the anti-bully squad created the kick in knorr charity tournament. >> kickball relates to my position as a kicker. >> everybody is having a good time. there's music, there's food e while the day was a lot of fun, games and laughs. >> one, two, three. >> reporter: they say the message is clear. don't be afraid to speak out. >> here's a child that has endured so much a life altering threatening disease and he survived it. >> that's our goal to get more kids to do exactly what dominic did. step up and speak out.

these are psychologists at london's brunell university they looked at data of more than 500 facebook users. if you don't like the research we can blame it on those folks across the pond but here's what they say and i have my pictures to show you. if you post a lot about your kids so here's a picture of my kids spring break we're in washington, d.c., well, if you do this a lot then are you more likely to be conscientious organized responsible and hard working. >> that's good. >> i have another picture here of my spouse, right. on a bike ride on the beach. if you post a lot about your significant other and you're bragging about that person, you've got some self-esteem problems and you're insecure. so -- >> or you're proud of the person that you're married to. >> right, right. if you post a lot about political issues, you know, if you're always getting into the smart, trying to do intelligent posts, then are you open minded, curious and creative.

personality. i will say that -- when they do studies on facebook and i do think this one is true, they find that it can can lead to feelings of depression and feelings of anxiety because do you ever notice you go on facebook especially if you've had a bad day and it seems like everybody else has had a perfect day. >> right. >> on facebook and that is legitimate where it can leave you feeling little bit inferior and kind of bummed out about your own life and so when we look at facebook, we always have to tell ourselves, this is the highlight reel of somebody's life. this is not reality. they have just picked the best moments to share. >> i say and i thank you for sharing all of this, our show is about social media so i say embrace it, love it, share pictures that make you happy. forget about studies like that. >> all right. i'm with you. >> we disagree.
