>> okay. we have the chopper upright now on your screen right now, live look at skies fox over the scene of this nasty accident that has the northeast extension shut down right now, all northbound lanes closed right before the allentown interchange. what we're looking at here, it looks like this was one of those construction trucks that typically carries the cones and then they have a big yellow bumper with the big blinking arrow. it looks like this guy got taken out here by the tractor trailer in the northbound lanes of the north east extension a few miles before you get to allentown, lehigh valley. this has been closed for about an hour now. traffic is stacked and pack here lined up behind the accident scene. it is tough is about a 10-mile gap, once you past quakertown, there is no turning around. so we're only about 4 miles before that allentown interchange. lets go to the maps if you are getting ready to head out the front door all northbound lanes, right before allentown
7:01 am
are closed and your best bet from quakertown heading north would be route 309. and, another problem overturn vehicle north on 495, right at terminal avenue. so anyone heading north up in toward wilmington stick with i-95, and then 422 west in pottstown remains closed right at route 100 and a early morning tractor trailer accident pulled down other head wires and they are making repairs right now. anyone heading west will not access westbound lanes from pottstown and will to have work their way over toward the pennsylvania turnpike. and then 295 north an accident up here near the florence columbus interchange that has all lanes blocked northbound. good alternate there would be the new jersey turnpike. your normal delays on both schuylkill and i-95 at the moment and mass transit looking good. mike, back to you. >> look out these storms are coming our way, severe storms moved through midwest especially, in western
7:02 am
michigan where a tornado touched down, the national weather service confirmed that a ef1 pretty small tornado with wind of a hundred miles an hour hit the area yesterday. five people had to be rescued but nobody was hospitalized, very strong wind, heavy rain that caused major problems in the state of iowa and illinois. it is moving our way. when will it get here? sue serio has the answer. >> after we get to a heat index above hundred degrees today. yikes. it is going to be hot to daze. it is for philadelphia and surrounding urban counties where we will get the hottest weather by the numbers is five out of ten. watch out for storms. that is why buddy has umbrella and watch for the heat. we have mug it the dog out. yes, muggy, very humid today. wear your shade right now. 79 degrees already. it is only 7:00 in the
7:03 am
morning. 9 miles an hour wind out of the south/southwest, 82 percent relative humidity. here's ultimate doppler. look at all this lightening with the leading edge of these storms as they evening toward williamsport. we will keep a close eye on this area of storms this morning. right now in the 70's and they will stay through 8:00. we are in the 80's by 9:00. morning commute should not have the same problems as the afternoon because we expect thunder, lightening, a lot of storms for evening commute depending where you live and before that happens a high temperature today mike and alex of 96 degrees. >> hard to believe. lets get into this because the whole country is talking about it. >> president other bam ace grabbing headlines for candid remarks he made about race in the aftermath of the shooting in south carolina now many were taken back to hear the actual n word coming out of the president a's mouth. so, obviously he felt like he needed to make a statement by using it publicly in context. >> yeah, so, what did you
7:04 am
think about this. lets have a frank discussion about this on twitter, instagram and facebook. here is what he a said. in his pod cast. you know, i read his book, dreams of my father, and there is also an audio version of that book, and he does say the n word in that about 12, or 13 times. still the president using the word in this pod cast, caused some people to be a little upset with some questioning whether he needed to say the word out loud but the white house press secretary says that president obama was not trying to be provocative, but was having a casual conversation and was making an important point. >> well definitely have a
7:05 am
bigger discussion on that in 30 minutes. south carolina governor nicki hail joins the confederate flag debate and calls for a controversial piece of the south carolina's history to be remove from the ground of the state capitol. they come in the wake of the deadly shooting at emmanuel ame church in charlton. twenty-one year-old dylann roof opened fire at the bible session a at historically black church killing nine people but it is not just lawmakers taking the stand on the conn federal wait flags. private companies are taking action. wal-mart has announced wilt remove all confederate flag merchandise from the stores. lets get back here now. a person on a bicycle hit by a car late last night in the hunting park neighborhood. he is in critical condition. >> philadelphia police say they have the truck involved but the driver ran from the scene, so lets get to jenny joyce because they are now trying to find that driver. >> reporter: they are still, no updates there alex and mike. the victim we do know he is a man in his 50's and remains in critical condition this morning at temple university

hospital. following this hit and run accident, that happened last night around 10:15 in the hunting park section of the city. on 600 block of east airy avenue. a pickup truck, was recovered overnight, a few blocks from the accident scene but the driver has not been located. the accident investigation division is on the case and they tell me they are working to pull surveillance video in the area to help positively identify the person who was behind the wheel of the car and police also telling me they are working with witnesses. they have not yet been interviewed but they are talking with the witnesses, and again they are looking for that video to try to help them put these pieces together, mike and alex. >> my goodness, all right. we want to tell but this coming out of the west philadelphia, police are investigating a home invasion that they say happened shortly after 4:30 this morning. >> officers were on the scene with k-9's in the 4500 block of market street. they are looking at several men who say they got away through the back of the house.
7:07 am
no one was home at the time, of the break in. police are investigating another shooting, this one, on the 800 block of westerly high avenue. it happened around 12:30 this morning. police say that the victim was taken to temple hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the upper high, no word on that condition though. this story will sound familiar because we just saw it happened this past weekend. >> more shots. >> shots fired in kensington in the middle of the crowded street. >> with kids, children, among the victims there. steve is on the story, steve? >> reporter: mike, i got good news and bad news. i will start with the good news. there have been no shootings in philadelphia since this day began seven hours and five minutes ago. bad news is we had 450 other shootings before today already in 2015. and, lets go to the one of the most recent ones and the video. no little kid, starting their summer vacation wants to go back in school in september with how i spent my summer vacation essay in an emergency room having shotgun bullets
7:08 am
removed and being saved by surgeons. but now already in the first days of summer, two groups of kid in three days have that experience to write first hand accounts of being innocent shooting victims. as young as three years old yesterday playing in the inflatable now deflated swimming pool blown apart by a shotgun blast. other kid, hit, playing in open fire hydrant, there is surveillance video from the store across the street where you see the kid one moment in the water having fun. it is 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon, blazing summer heat. then blazing blast out of the shotgun. you can see on the surveillance an adult male run back to try to grab the kids who have no idea he what is going on, he gets hit and then goes right down. >> it is scary because it is like your neighborhood and you fear for your children. >> he should have thought about the kid before pulling the stuff that he to because if one of our kid got hit or my sister would have died, god bless her it would have been seriously crazy, like crazy.
7:09 am
i thank god that she's good. >> obviously it is a problem. it is ignorant and people shooting like that down the street in the middle of the beautiful day, children get struck, it just makes absolutely no sense but i think, again it reenforcees what we tell you, some of that he is guys just don't care. >> commissioner obviously cares leaving the air conditioning office and going out to the scene himself on get first hand accounts of what happened and again we had kids shot at this block party in mantua on saturday, also by a shotgun, also nobody coming forward and to tell who did that and both of these cases have people fighting in the street beforehand and then person who was not winning the fight, leaving to go get a shotgun and try to win the fight, round one, to by firing a shotgun because their fists could not get the job done. yesterday they did fine the shotgun and you saw that metal sign before the sound by the
7:10 am
all blistered by shotgun bullets and that gives you a sense what the human body gets when it gets hit by a shotgun from close range. just awful stuff. if you think 450 shootings so far as of midnight is a lot, it is actually 13 less shootings then last year but do the math as we approach 500 shootings and we approach july r this city is averaging about a thousand shootings a year. that is a staggering number. >> staggering indeed. you can do a lot of damage with the shotgun, those scattered shots. 7:10. how about this, two people are in the hospital after a car drives right through a home in the rhawnhurst section of the city. >> police say around 5c yesterday afternoon a car going north on castor avenue somehow lost control hitting a car and then driving right in the house. you can see it here. man inside the car was hit, ran to the rescue and then helped people inside the home. >> there was a would machine pinned, and this little child was pinned between the car and
7:11 am
the wall. so, i just kind of like, i was so worried about this woman, you know, i just kind of moved these bricks, like they were, like, i am not really strong enough to do that but i just had to get it done. >> all shaken up. he drove into somebody's house. one that were hurt were taken to the hospital and is in stable condition this morning. septa regional rail trains, hello will be more crowded then usual this summer. lets me tell you y this is as crews take railcars out of service to install equipment needed for a new positive train control system. does that sound familiar? septa says ten or more cars in the 350 car fleet, will be out of service at any given time so the upgrade until at least november that means many trains, which are often six cars or longer, will be
7:12 am
shortened by one car making them five cars long. yes, i'm good with math. new fiscal year begins july 1st, you know that but pennsylvania still does not have have a budge net place. governor tom wolf is at odds with republicans who control the legislature, of course, he is a democrat. tom wolf says they have been unwilling to discuss his proposals to increase public school funding and reduce property taxes. republicans are insisting on measures to overall public pension benefits, and privatized the state control wine and liquor stores. 7:12. some presidential candidates are moving fast to distance themselves from the leader of the white supremacist organization. now earl holt, president of the council of conservative citizens has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to republican candidates in recent years according to the u.s.a. today. that includes senator ted cruz and ran paul and former pennsylvania senator rick santorum and was kin son governor scott walker. walker is only one not

7:15 am
family's alter. do you think it looks like jesus. >> let's rerack that sucker, rerack it. >> lets see it. >> it is coming up. >> yes. >> wait for it. >> does it look more like howard eskin or jesus. >> i don't know. >> it looks like the burger king guy too doesn't it. well, so does howard. >> colonel sanners. >> wait a minute. >> albert einstein. >> colonel sanders own taco bell right now. >> yeah, they do. >> i know they have kfc, and/taco bell all in one. >> as long as she believes, that is all that matters. it is in her home. >> all right. >> 7:15. we're back looking at this accident on the pennsylvania turnpike, all north bound lanes closed approaching the least high valley. the problem is that about 10 miles worth of stuck traffic out there, on the
7:16 am
northbound lanes, of the extension, it looks lick this tractor trailer smacked in the back of one of the construction trucks out there on the northbound lanes. lets go to the maps, northbound closed right now between quakertown, and allentown, and there is again about a 10-mile stretch before you get to the accident scene and we are stack up pumper to bumper. if you are leaving quakertown right now northbound 309 is way to go and that will get new to allentown and back on your way. a live look at an overturn vehicle look at this mess downtown here, this is vine street expressway, coming off of i-95, all traffic stopped right now, is there the wheels, and under carriage of this vehicle that is on its side coming into philadelphia, fire fighters are on the scene, even school bus, maybe kid on a class trip, coming into center city, stacked up on i-95 south, trying to get into downtown because of that overturn vehicle and then
7:17 am
we're shut down in both directions here, along i295, it is 295 at florence columbus, both directions, closed, you yan to use the new jersey turnpike as an alternate. we have closures of both 295 and the northeast extension. we hope ac it is working this morning. >> indeed because it is already in the upper 70's just about every where. look at what is heading our way. we have to look at ultimate doppler here. we have very strong thunderstorms with a lot of lightening apparently heading towards williamsport, pennsylvania and we are indeed under a enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms according to the storm prediction center out there in oklahoma. they issue a report about who is under greatest risk of thunderstorms. today it is us. temperatures are getting warm. trenton 76. >> seventy-two in mount pocono. seventy-eight in millville. close to 80 in wildwood, new jersey. we're checking dew points in the 60's to the north of us.
7:18 am
that is not too bad. but once dew point-inch in the 70's then we are talking about oppressive humidity. we are up there, already, it is only going to get worse. wind, the direction is the key, remember yesterday we had north westerly wind. today southeasterly. that is where heat and humidity comes from and that is what is going on today and that is why we have a heat advisory because we are expecting the heat index to be above hundred. that is how it will feel outside in a couple hours, really, so we have to take care of yourself, make sure you stay hydrated today and don't over exert yourself. by 2:00 we have a heat index of 101, for today, and then thunderstorms will hit. we will also be official today with our first heat wave of the year, nine is first on sunday. ninety-one yesterday. and 96 today. eighty-seven tomorrow with lower humidity. we will give tomorrow a nine. most of thursday should be
7:19 am
okay until rain moves in, friday, saturday, and we will get unsettled as we get in the weekend with high temperatures on saturday and sunday guys only in the 70's and this is the first full weekend of summer. >> it sure is. >> you know that karlie lloyd, we just love her on this show, she has been by a number of times to the program. >> i would call her a friend of good day philadelphia she made above the fold in u.s.a. today's sports section. >> that is a game face. >> take a ball off the top of your head you will grimace, right. so they have scored two against, the you had, now will advance in the quarter final of the women's world cup. >> it is all thanks to this big moment. >> yeah. delran new jersey, karlie lloyd, scored one of the two goals in the win. >> u.s. will now take on china
7:20 am
friday night in the quarter finals. >> that will be tough. >> yeah. >> you can watch that game right here on fox 29 and remember, we were tweeting about this last night karlie said for each goal that i score i will eat a doughnut here on "good day philadelphia". >> she will have to consume at least one doughnut when she get back. >> game against china will be tough because a number of our players have have received yellow card and a couple of our good players will not be playing, this is going to be tense. they didn't play particularly well last tonight and still won. >> what do you think. >> tell me what k cup is. >> everybody says i say it wrong keurig. >> k cups are what you put in the machines to get your coffee. so now it is easier to get coffee then where are americans drinking less coffee then in years past. there has been a change in the morning routine, mike. >> less coffee. >> i love tea. >> i know [brad] my friends, my sweet, sweet friends,

7:23 am
hey, 7:00 if 23rd.
7:24 am
>> most people start their day with coffee. mike, i want to say you drink coffee but you put all this stuff in on, latte, i don't even necessity fit is coffee. >> are you saying you are a frufru drinker. >> lauren, i like to have a venti. >> yes, like this. >> yes. >> foam on your upper lip. >> yes. >> yes. >> skinny, vanilla latte. >> but do you know what, in our green room, lauren simonetti we have one of those keurig machine with those little k cups. >> how do we say it, keurig. >> everyone says i say it wrong. >> just say it. >> keurig. >> how aim saying it, keurig. >> it is a little k cup. >> the thing that makes the one cup of coffee, it is really expensive pouch. quarter of americans have one of those machines so you no longer brewing that pot of coffee and come on do you ever
7:25 am
drink the whole pot. you pour half down the drain but when you brew k cup you are drink ago this one cup of coffee and sometimes you go back for a second. because of the k cup trend as a country, for the first time in six years we are drinking less coffee. so average is 1.85 cups a day, now, hold on, i got to find it, i don't know is what considered a cup, if it is traditional measurement, or if it is star bucks tall measurement, mug of coffee, they say cup, that is a very loose term these days i feel like good i would agree. >> hey, let's move on from the coffee, i don't care about that. is what the deal with the cereals like my trix, trix are for kids, they are not the same colors. >> nope, because they are taking and actually they have taken already, as far as trips are concerned, the artificial colors out. so when you buy new trix boxes, right there, there is no blue and there is in green. >> ahh.
7:26 am
>> there is, yellow, ones brownish ones and purple and red. >> yes. >> for a cereals bowl is no longer fun. >> no. >> it is all healthy stuff. >> at least it is healthy. >> it is healthy, this is the buzz word and trend, general mills will take every single artificial flavor out of all of its cereals by 2016. >> truth is coming first. >> picking out the colors. >> would you rather pick out colors or be dead. >> pick out your colors. >> yes. >> we will take earth tones. >> a couple of blue and green trix never killed anyone. >> hey lauren we will see you again tomorrow. >> you too. >> is what oldies new again. there is a trend in baby names, we have not seen since the 80's, that was 30 years ago. >> why parents apparently they don't want to you necessity if their baby is a important or a girl. >> we are going bob to generic names. >> all for it
7:27 am
7:28 am
7:29 am
we're at 7:30 hour. >> the northeast extension, looking from sky fox over the scene, the accident that involved a tractor trailer that smacked in the back of one of the construction vehicles on the northbound lanes between quakertown, and the lehigh valley interchange.
7:30 am
again, all northbound lanes are blocked. this happened about 4 miles before the allentown interchange. is there miles of stuck traffic behind this shut down. once you past quakertown kind of dead in the water there. so lets get to the maps. if you are leaving the house from quakertown or the lansdale interchange and heading north up toward allentown, lehigh valley area your best betties using route 309, don't pass quakertown otherwise you will get stuck in the backup. some good news for motorist on 295 they have reopened both lanes, both directions i should say near florence, columbus. we were shut down for a nasty accident there, and still backed up i would use the new jersey turnpike heading out of the front door ape we're still closed on 422 west right at route 100 interchange because of an earlier tractor trailer accident, and also took down some wires, mike and alex back over to you. quick weather.
7:31 am
>> i'm sorry, lets do weather. >> it is a rough morning. those big road, all those accidents and thunderstorms haven't even arrived just yet. eye on the sky later on. buddy has his umbrella and his shades ape his dog, muggy because it is already humid out there mild start with temperatures in the 70's, a five out of ten in your weather by the numbers and as we look at our heat advisory it will feel like a hundred or more, by maybe lunchtime or 2:00 this afternoon. 79 degrees already. here's leading edge of those then are storms heading toward williamsport right now, we will see if they will hold together. so morning commute looks okay, it is later on things could get a little rough when we get to a high of 96 degrees and then those thunderstorms hit. so mike and alex, an eye on the sky later on today. >> that is for sure, it will be loud, a lot of thunderstorms today. >> 7:33. lets get back to the story we are talk about the president
7:32 am
of the united states, dropping the n word during a pod cast, obviously he felt like he needed to make a statement, saying it out loud, on tape. >> it is a word we don't use because of the history of hate. for that reason you will not hear president say it on our air but we have lowered audio because impact was just as strong without hearing it and some people are upset. it is sparking a big debate. let's listen. a professor that we know very well, thanks for being here at the show. what is all of the hub bob. >> i think people are confused. i have been receiving calls from a lot of my white collogues who say chad on one level he is calling young man in baltimore thugs. young man in south caroline's
7:33 am
doesn't say anything and now using the n war. context wise when we look at what the president was saying i understood what he was saying. he was talking about the disease of racism and all of us in our democracy need to up root racism offer are side. similar to mark twain and usage of the war. context wise i understood where he was going with the word but very surprising and alarming for me because this is a president who has not spoken with that type of language. i think outrage that we see should not be the word that president used one time verse those who used the word on a continuous basis since he has been in office good if you go on the internet, same people that said he used it on a pod cast are, you know how many times he has been call the n word every day on the internet. >> e-mails that do not come but we do know those that reached public where individuals talked about him and his family. the first president that has received this type of president of any iting president. once again context means everything but i would have
7:34 am
like the president not to have used the word because it gives ammunition for those who say see, the president says it. >> i think he still called have talk about the disease of racism, institutional racism and how all of us as americans can work to up route american racism and dismantle it. >> at the same time the fact he did say it, it is all over the news and forcing people to have that conversation. >> you are absolutely right. having that conversation is essential. we need safe environment where we can have a conversation. not my pain is worse than your pain. when we look at what happened in charleston, it was a terrorist act this young man was out ridden from a evil perspective because of skin color. now that the church is back, you know, to a sense of normalcy per se we can have this conversation. we need to have this conversation and put those elephants out of the room. >> you are so right had we not used it we would not even be talking bit. >> true. >> when it comes to the surprise factor a lot of people feel like he likes to straddle both side, stay in the middle. do you think now, i guess,
7:35 am
move to the left do you think he will speak out more and saying more things. >> i think that is exactly what will happen. i was very surprised. the president with my keepers keepers initiative. more conversation around racism. we will see a different president. coming in the presidency he thought he would be able to have this conversation. it is very difficult to have this conversation even as professor of race relations for me as an african-american teaching primarily white students. i have to be very tack full in the sense not playing blame game or making them feel bad for white supremacy. price supremacy is a idealology. it is prejudice plus power. reality is we want an effective coalition on every side of the color and gender line to address the in eke witt we see in the owe site. >> you say it was alarming, why do you say that. >> because, the president is always been professorial. he has been calculated and very poised. >> but this was calculated. there is no way he just blurt
7:36 am
that had out. he knew when he went in the interview wow use that word. >> i can only guy by the white house and what they are saying, he said this is not something he set out to do. we don't know. but the converse assayings has to be structured. we have to look at that storied history and bring in the, the prime and charleston gives them an opportunity to look at once again what is happening in our democracy as it relates to white supremacy. >> he said in that pod cast you cannot repair two or 300 years of damage in one, six year presidency. >> exactly. it will take a lifetime for to us do it, another 150 years but at some point we have to deal with those elephants that are in the room. it just so happens this format with you two this morning is a start. >> do you think this makes it worth it the fact that he used it and everybody is talking about it now. >> i think it is. maybe that what's affect. we don't know what the motivation was but we can use that for a m to have a healthy conversation. >> thank you so much.
7:37 am
>> professor, always good to see you. >> do you want any coffee. >> i don't do coffee but i'll take some tea. >> how about a doughnut. >> in doughnut. >> and it has pulp in it too. >> my favorite. >> how about this. skinny jeans, bad for your health. how they landed one women in the hospital, her jeans were so tight, she had to go to the hospital.
7:38 am
7:39 am
7:40 am
i saw a commercial that said you can save $500 by switching to progressive. that was me, mom. [ laugh ] i thought you said, "that was me, mom." [ laughter ] we will be on the beach this friday, in margate, 7:00 to 10:00. >> just go to lucy the elephant. we will be right there on the boardwalk. we will be out there on the beach. you will be able to find us. 7:40. 2015 is called the year of gender neutral names for babies. >> according to a new survey by baby center.com. millennial parents pennsylvania are more open minded a don't want their
7:41 am
children to conform to stereotypes. againer neutral names came popular in the 1960's. that trendies now back. so, the winner so far, a more i. >> yes. >> a amore. >> that can be used for both. >> that can be used for both. >> 56 percent increase for girls and a 22 percent increase for boys. >> okay. so amore is a girl and a boy's name. >> also names like carter, phoenix, sawyer, and a few others. >> carter can be a girls name. >> sawyer. >> phoenix. >> according to this service, alex. >> alex. >> alex. >> it is a boy or a girl but you are alexandria. >> will alexandria. >> i thought were you alexandria. >> come on michael eugene. >> alex contract. >> my dad his name is alexander. he took that and my mother's
7:42 am
man is sharon and with a y. she put it together, with a y. >> but you sayal ex-contract. >> but you say, you are alexandria. >> no one said my full name so it is weird, it is just alex. it gist too much to say. you rush and get my attention, alexandria, alexandria. >> okay. >> it is just too much. >> alex. >> alex is good. >> yeah. >> what is your middle name. >> elizabeth. >> that is beautiful. >> thank you. >> it is a new season, that means it is time for new trend, what does that mean new season of what? oh, summer. it is summertime. have you ever heard of the puff i dog eye. >> i wonder what that looks like. >> what about the sand art hair. that sand art in the model? you can do it in your head.
7:43 am
>> i like that. >> lets try it.
7:44 am
7:45 am
good morning everybody. here's a scene of that accident from sky fox on the northeast extension. a tractor trailer smack in the back of one of the work trucks right there. it has happened about i'd say
7:46 am
