8:32 am
consideration. this is up to parental discretion. here's questions you about about their child before leaving them home alone. first do you live in a safe area. what are surroundings like and environment. and does your child show good judgment sometimes little ones are more mature than older siblings it's not necessarily age issue and is there adult close by in case of emergency. also kids need a lot of information about using things in the kitchen and being aware of their risks and especially, karen, risks they cannot see like going online. we're talking about kids tweeting about oh, i'm stuck at home babysitting my sibling my mom is at work that's what they cannot do that's tell the world you're home alone. >> let's talk about the specific one use the microwave but not often don't boil something on stove and establish rules ahead of time so they're clear cut and doesn't lead to confusion. >> exactly you know we want to
8:33 am
establish rules let's talk about rules in the kitchen are awe loued to use the microwave and rules about opening door appsing phone and which friends are allowed over with my 13-year-old daughter no boys allowed over even if they're friends we're only allowed to have same-sex friends over when mommy is not home. but after you establish those rules you want to put them imprint. that makes it more official and then you post it so serve clear rule number one, two, three, don't violate any of these and certain going to be good. that's empowering the kids and they understand it's a big responsibility then instead of just talking to them about the rules because it's easy to forget the rules as the days go by. >> that's the truth a lot of times we have bigger kids watch littler kids. what's the guideline you think. maybe running out for quicker rand on something. >> well that's when it's especially important to have rules. because sometimes siblings you get them together and sometimes
8:34 am
you have a good party or good fight sometimes. so that's why it's even more important that the older sibling can say look these aren't my rules they're mom and dad's rules you cannot go outside on the trampoline when they're not home rule number three it's right there. again analyze every individual situation. one other thing you can do is these are all over the internet. this is emergency contact sheet you can printout. this is a good idea. you fill out all the information and this is good for baby sitters or for adults to have in the house you tape this inside a kitchen cub board and if there is a real emergency the address is there for 911 and parents cell numbers and emergency contacts are on there. it makes it easy in a time of crisis. should that be necessary. >> i'm making one right now thank you i love your red, white and blue and happy fourth of july. >> thank you, you too. >> thank you and take care. let us know what you think is the right age to have your kids stay home alone. what do you do. use #fox29weekend 9 weekend.
