employees inside, then shot one of the employees in the back. the suspect then took off. the victim is in stable condition. and police are looking for two men in connection with a deadly shooting outside a west philadelphia rec center. we've had a lot of vial events over the rec centers over the last couple of years. this happened friday evening, 6:30 near 60th and columbia. there were two masked men in a white infinity firing shots at a man 42 years old who happened to be outside the pool outside. but you know who else was outside the pool area, lots of kids. one walked up at close range shot the victim in the head and there was a stray bullet that hit a person at the wrong place at the wrong time. there was even a basketball game that was going on on the courts. we hear gun shots, pop, pop, pop.

we're following some tragic breaking news this morning. the us navy says a sailor injured in a shooting in chattanooga has died. the death occurred two days after a deadly shooting killed four marine. you're looking at the suspect right there on the screen. the shooting killed four marine and injured three others including the sailor. mount sinai opened fire at a recruiting center where he shot
8:46 am
and killed the marine and wound the sailor, abdul acease was shot to death by police. checking in with the headlines at exactly 8:46,, pinions, literally came to a rescue of a toddler in colorado. there was a little l five year old from colorado springs playing in a room and she falls backwards through a window and she falls with the stuffed toy that she was holdings it happened to be one of those minion characters, it turns out the toy gets underneath her and breaks her fall of three story. she was rushed over to the hospital and at the end only has a broken arm. and in your health news, digital addiction is very real and it doesn't affect only adults. how much time do your kids spend in front of any screen, a tv, a phone, a tablet and how much is too much in we put this question up there, the comments started immediately coming in. frustrated parents are complaining about it on social
8:47 am
media. great i can hear the kids watching stupid cartoons on your eye pad. whatever happened with making your kids stood up. i wish my kids would look up once in a while and pay attention to me. technology is the root of all evil spending time with kids and hub biand everyone is on the phone. this morning we're reaching out to fox medical teams dina sanity fan take for some answers. and good morning to you. i was just looking at my tablet while you were talking playing solitaire. >> how much is too much? technology is supposed to be a good thing. >> and it is, but we are abusing it. we adults, like just like your viewer said we're as bads as the kids are. over the summertime we seem toette on why is the kids are constantly looking at tear tablets and their computer
8:48 am
screen. there's a documentary that really got our attention. it's fascinating. it takes a closer look at technology addictionment it takes place inside a chinese rehab clinic where they are locking teenagers up behind bars to treat them for their internet addiction. a couple things the doctor tell me we have got to let our kids be bored. when they're not sitting in front of a screen that's when their imaginations come to live. as soon as the kid has to sit in a waiting room or sit in a restaurant or at home they have an electronic stipulation so it's not doing anything for their imagination or their creativity. another thing it's not so much what they're doing online that might be the problem in the virtual world, it's what they're not doing in the real world they're not making eye contact, not learning social skills that are so important. so what's the magic number? > well, about two hours a day is what the experts say. for many that's very tricky so
8:49 am
you have to somehow come up with some rules. some people suggest a contract where you say here's when you can use your electronics and set up sometime of day rules, parameters. you know what, you're a parent, i'm not. so i'm going to get in trouble now with the parents. we're talking addiction, we're talking about our children won't pay attention to us. you're the parent, tell them stop playing with the ipad right now. >> it's not that simple? >> you're exactly right, be the parent, set the rules. the problem is that the smartphones, it's always in the child's pocket and they can just get it out and start, you know, playing the game. the other problem is that we parents aren't quite aware how much time the kids are spending in front of the screens. you lose track. especially in the summer. you think it's a half hour, and that's maybe really an hour and then that turns into two hours. the doctor says the same thing, be the parent and say here are the rules.
8:50 am

cloudy skies once the showers move out now, that's a look at the rain. strong storms came through the lehigh valley, they're now through bucks county. one stronger shower just about to move of in through trenton and mercer county. it's clearing out behind this. once the rain moves through, getting a nice break from the rain and the storms. lightning strikes there in bucks county, but not nearly the number that we saw moving through the lehigh valley and the pocono mountains. these storms are weakening as they push south. that area of rain will continue to move to the south as well. here's what we have to the south. we're are certainly heating up. we have a heat advisory in effect. these heat index values well over 100-degrees. not lasting all that long, though. we'll show you when the dry air returns in the seven-day forecast. thank you so much. we do have this breaking news that's coming in right now. this is from west philadelphia. we have learned that four people are hurt.

men in connection with a deadly shooting outside of a west philadelphia rec center. it was very brazen and it was a lot of innocent people there. this happened at about 6:30 on friday evening. this was over at the tuesday can rec center over at 60th and columbia. there are two guys wearing masks and they roll up in their fancy car, a white infinity s-v and they start fed firing shots at a victim there, a 3 # year old man outside the pool area and there was also a lot of kids. the suspects get out of the vehicle and walk up to the person at close range and shoot the victim into the head. clearly he was the intended target. but there was a stray bullet that hit an innocent by tanner. there was lots of children there and a basketball game that was going on. we just hear gun shots, pop, pop, pop. i was scared. he was scared. it was like gun shots, they could have traveled over there to us and hit everybody. kids were running and we just started taking cover.
9:05 am
so obviously they were very concerned about that. witnesses say the suspects drove into the driveway of the home in the area, took off their license plate and then defense away. police are checking some of the surveillance videos in that area. we don't have a motive for the shooting. police in upper marion township putting out the warning this morning about pick pockets. there have been about two dozen cases in that area. more than a half in the last few weeks, police say it doesn't appear thatter they related, but in most cases the people are working in pairs. as one person distracts the victim the other reaches in and grabs her purse and then the bad guys go on a quick shopping spree. the frequency that it's happening with and the amount of people that seem to be involved, it looks like it's a pretty big group, whether they all know one another we're not quite sure.

9:08 am
following carli for years. it's a bonus that we're hearing so much about her. before today we hadn't really seen much of carli in south jersey since the world cup when she scored a hat trick against japan and womens team claimed a world cup title. carli went up to new york city where there was a ticker tape parade. we were up there for the parade, we got to see the team celebrate with thousands of fans who lined the streets to cheer on this winning and accomplished sports team. then carli and her teammates went out to la. we saw players dressed in their finest. we got to some of the parents who said carli is a roll model both on and off the field. while the ma are the jo of the campers are from new jersey, there are campers from all over the country, new york, ohio, the carolinas. the parents are just as excited to be here as the kids.

9:12 am
9:12 on fox 29 weekend and taking a look at your news headlines, the family of a philadelphia man who they claim is the victim of excessive force at hands of philadelphia police is calling for action. we do have some cellphone video of the arrest. we know that 2 # year old tie read carol was taken into custody back in april. this surfaced online this month. this appears to show punches and baton strikes as he was struggling with the officers. two victims were bitten repeatedly as they were trying to cuff him. his family and their lawyer are demanding some actions. the video is short of shocking, the utter disregard for the welfare and the well-being of mr. carol is just shocks my sense of right and wrong.
9:13 am
the family has planned a march for justice today. that's what they're calling it. this is going to start at the spot where carol was arrested in east germantown. also this morning something you saw happen right here some breaking news. we found out that two people have now been arrested in connection with that. that's the attempted home invasion of a west mount airy location where people were shocked by the video and the guns. lieutenant from the police department broke the news just about an hour ago. this is the surveillance video ohio walking up to the victim's door looking at the camera. two are taken into custody, two that they think are close to taking into custody. that's the latest on that, bill. some major changes are coming to the armed forces, a six-month study has been ordered and aimed at former ending one of the last gender discrimination policies that exists in the military. defense secretary ash carter says that they're looking into
9:14 am
the regulations which ban transgender people from serving saying that they are outdated. carter is creating a, wouldingç group that will review the policies. he says he wants to determine if listing the ban will have any impact on the military's ability to be ready at battle. this week ats biawards caitlyn jenner called on the public to try to understand transgender people. my plea tonight is to join me and making this one of your issues as well. how do we start. we start with education. i was fortunate to meet author ash a few times and i know how important education was to him. learn as much as you can about another person to understand them better. now, outwit the comments immediately started coming in. frances contact wrote, good breaking news, pentagon may lift the ban on transgender people working in the us military.
9:15 am
but bill said, transgender troops in the military what could possibly be go on asking that as a question. one person who can talk about this christine beck, christine was born a man and served more than 20 years in uniform as a seal nailed christopher. she hit her transgender status, but now she's elated that the pentagon is changing things. good morning to you. >> thank you. > i'm curious initially there was a lot of discussion about caitlyn jenner getting the courage award. someone like yourself who served in the military as a navy seal, i'm curious what your take was, caitlyn jenner kind of being recognized as this universal correspond rage yourself figure. >> courage comes in all shapes and sizes. it is definitely courage to do what she's doing. i don't put a quote on courage. i think it takes all types. in talking about the transgender
9:16 am
ban i'm curious about you actually served so you better than most would know what it's like serving many the people who resist lifting the bans say it will make people uncomfortable, it will disrupt the troops am you know firsthand, are the troops ready for the ban to be lifted. >> i think we're ready because we're a professional force. the military is professional and we're going to do what we have to do. just like we had integration back in the 50s so there's definitely people out there that have problems with that and they just quit the military. we have a lot of people out there that want to join, so it's fine if you can't deal with that. it's just one of those things. there will be people out there that won't like it but they're going to do their job because that's what we're going on do. i'm a isolated showers so i know there's going to be some issues, but it's about issues. it will happen. i was looking into it and i see the lady val or sign behind you.
9:17 am
so that's something that you've been kind of working on for a while talking to people about the transgender and the issue. you say this is something you were dealing with from the time that you were a child. s what's that transition like now, particularly dealing in the military, in the man's world in quotes. >> it's been difficult, i mean i've definitely run into folks who initially are very offended or very confused by the whole thing. but then after i speak to them for a few minutes, especially if they're old friends, after speaking to them for a few minutes that i realize i haven't changed that much. i'm still here, the same capabilities and i'm still a human being. so you could see the transitions aren't really that big of a deal. it's not that drastic if you really think about it. it just depends on how open your mind can be and just give them that first few minutes and see what happens. you might find a pretty cool person. you might be surprised. i think this is something people
9:18 am
are going to continue to discuss. we have to have you come back because you're also running for office. >> yes. > there's a lot more we have to discuss. >> us congress in maryland. we'll have you back to discuss that fit. we appreciate your time this morning. > thank you very much. >> thank you. > guys tell us what you think. that conversation continues from defining courage to the transgender ban being lifted in the military and we want to know what you think, is society ready? you can leave your comments on our fox 29 facebook page, tweet us at fox 9 philly, just make sure you use our hashtag, fox 29 weekend. it is 9:18. let's take a live look outside. we do have a look the at airport. i want to give a shout out. lose i the elephant, happy 134th birthday to you. and also as we head over to dave warren we have a weather question. thinks an event i was just talking about. i think i might head over the ben franklin bridge, it's the cooper river dragon boat race that will be happening today. listen to this. hi, i'm rosemary from the refer

sirens we're hosting south jersey's first dragon fest evil t the cooper river. we were wondering, can we expect clear skies. >> i don't know about clear sky, but it will be dry. i've done that before. it's quite a workout. a great event. a the looking whying on throughout the day. cooper river park is where we go right now in camden county. notice it's not completely clear. there was just a light breeze, but that temperature is climbing up close to 90-degrees with the humidity. a warm and muggy today. it heats up throughout the rest of the weekend. don't worry about these rain showers moving through. they're about to move through mercer county and push off the coast. a few showers move off the coast. a few isolated showers is what we can expect here over the next hour or sex the rain continues to weaken and clear out. that's the computer forecast.
9:20 am
this goes hour by hour throughout the day today. no green on there. the skies are still fairly cloudy and it's warm and muggy. we will have isolated showers developing, but not until 5 or 6:00. not until the opening. the afternoon hours should be okay. certainly not as widespread as it is. much of the area will stay dry. but can't rule out a passing shower this evening. once the rain clears out, no more thunderstorm. we're into the 70s now. 98 for a heat index today, but look at the numbers tomorrow. this heat index advisory above 100-degrees. the heat continues in the seven-day. i'll show you when there's relief coming up a little bit later. now, pope francis is coming to philadelphia. are you hoping to see him? you'll need to plan ahead. we've got the decisions you'll need to make starting this coming monday. also, you know i love him. i did predict all of this, how well is it selling right now,

sending in this little l video. just something to brighten up your day. you know i love babies. billion is doing the happy dance so i beg of you to help me and this man because he is shame me. we were asking a question, bill, explain the question and explain why you're winning. it was supposed to be about philly's favorite food but i actually think it was just who their favorite is. >> the popularity contest. > you know. at any rate, karen's choice was the schmidter. not showing up here. grand sandwich. dave was tasty cake, pretty strong showing and mine was scrambled. scrambled right now is running away with it as philadelphia's favorite food right now. i did see a lot of people in your defense tweeting they like to -- my dad likes it with maim supplant run. some other people talking about apple butter. it is pretty good, but my

schmidter is the best. a lot of you were talking about their favorite places to go and get subs and hoag guys. >> south percent i the best, the roast pork italian one of my favorites. it doesn't travel well, though, so that's why i picked tasty cakes. the scram, we appreciate everybody who is responding in tweeting in the instant poles. we are going to have these tweeting in every week or tomorrow, actually. it is 9:42 right now if it wasn't already inviting enough we're speaking about reading terminal market, but it's going to get a face lift. it is the art place -- oh, how am i supposed to know. i'm going to tell you all about what's happening there next. and we are enjoying a philadelphia feeling. a little x-r

> welcome back to fox 29 weekend. taking a look at your news now. as it wasn't already inviting enough reading terminal market will soon get a face lift. the art place group is now investing $160,000 towards street skipping project outside the market. 9 work is going to be down right by full better streets. it is kind of dark in that under pass into a hub that will welcome visitors to that area because it's right by the convention center. this project is often going to
9:46 am
feature the creation of an outdoor space to be used for events and performances. that's cool. it's dark under there. that's the excuse for why i got a ticket there earlier this week. that's another story. push that to the side. let's take a look at what's going on outside. looking at trenton, the state capital. things look a little bit gray, but not too bad out there. a great shot, by the way. we're going to find out what's going on in trenton, our area, but first we've got this weather question. hey, i'm fox 29, i'm about to aboard my flight to philly. we're going to take the nationwide tour of the camden county boat house sunday from 11 to 5 and i'm going to be unloading about 500 discounted wedding dresses. 500 take them one at a time. it's a lot of work there with that humidity coming in. by 1:00 it is hot and humid, above 90-degrees. this is tomorrow. got a big event there today. it's hot and humid with a high
9:47 am
humidity that heat index could be over 100-degrees tomorrow. that's the big story this weekend. the rain is clearing out for now. had some heavy thunderstorms move through the lehigh valley, look how it's clearing up. it continues to push to the south. center city philadelphia, maybe a light sprinkle in the next hour or so before this all moves south. that rain to the west, don't worry about that, that moves south and weakance. this is all picked up by the computer forecast. it clears it out by noon today and then we're rain free. now, that sunshine could lead to a few isolated showers and storms developing. they are very isolated and not all that widespread, mainly focused to the north and western suburbs. so that rain may come back today, but the rain between now and about noon that we could just see that rain pushing through. so let's check with the seven-day forecast, the rain is clearing out. it looks pretty good, but the heat is here for the next few
9:48 am
days, hot and humid today, hot and humid tomorrow. on monday we have hot and humid weather with thunderstorm. this will be that front moving through, clearing out the humidity. it's less humid on tuesday. still hot. finally starting to see a little break here between wednesday and thursday. the 90-degree stretch should come toen a end by the end of the week. barely we're still at # 3-degrees on thursday. it's nice and comfortable. tomorrow is the day to much what, though. it's not really the thunderstorms, there's a heat advisory from effect because you just can't cool off like you could on a dry day with that temperature so high and the humidity so high. bill, thank you very much, dave. so talking about something, a story that has people talking on social media. it's the death of sandra bland. the 28 year old was pulled over in texas for allegedly not using a turn signal arresting deputies accused her of assaulting an officer in this cellphone video shows part of the arrest and bland shouting that the trooper
9:49 am
slammed her head into the ground. three days later planned was found dead inside a jail cell. authorities say that she hung herself with a plastic trash bag but loved ones say there is no way that she would take her own life and they want justice. hundreds of people hit the street to protest bland's death. joining us now to talk about this in stud oh solomon jones morning host at 900amwurd. we talked about this when i was on with you on the show. you guys were all discussing this. is this just a question of society not really trusting the police right now and showing how much work we have to do? >> there's a couple of things that are suspicion about this and i think a lack of trust is one problem. but it comes from things like this. the officer who was involved who has -- he's been suspended for violating departmental policy around traffic stops and around courtesy during those traffic stops. the fbi has been called in. the sheriff who was in charge
9:50 am
said that there was a camera in the cell. he said according to video camera in the cell nobody else entered the cell except there was no video camera in the cell. there was a video camera in the hallway. so there are these discrepancies in the story as it comes out and that's one of the things building up the distrust. now, the comments started coming in immediately, strong opinions on both sides on social media. laura rights, she, sandra bland was also an anti police brutality, nobody kills themselves in count jail over a traffic violation. another from stephanie, if you obey traffic laws you won't be pulled over. they conceal this information in books. try picking up one from time to time. michelle says, so sad if the coroner said suicide by happening that should be a big clue. it sounds like the family wants a different closure or someone to blame. you did point out, solomon all of the information that has come out right now, but they're
9:51 am
sticking to the fact that the surveillance video in the hall shows that nobody entered the hall. of course the family doesn't want to believe somebody committed suicide, but it's possible that's just the tragic reality? >> anything is possible. we don't know all the facts at this point. we know that the coroner said asphyxiation, suicide by hanging. we don't know the manner of death. we don't know if they declared it -- they haven't said it's a suicide -- i mean a homicide. so we don't noel a of the facts yet, but we do know this. we do t know that we don't trust these stories as they come out. we've had initial stories come out from police in cases like this time after time after time. we've been shown over time that these facts have been wrong. so as the facts come out, as the truth comes out, we'll see what happens, but certainly this is a test for texas as a state and county that's had big problems around raise relations. weaver we're got to rap, we're out of time. in a word are you buying the
9:52 am
story. >> no, i'm not buying the story at all. there have been debts count county jail. they are

bite. first we'll start off with our homemade waffle and since we're in philadelphia we have the liberty bell waffle, as you could see here. let's move onto making the nutella stab even i am we have egg yokes, sugar and fran chelo liquor. we pour in the sugar, a shot of fran chelo, the egg yokes, the sugar and fran chelo and put it over the simmer water bath. it's simmering lightly. you don't want it boiling too hard because otherwise you'll scramble the eggs. what we're doing is we're putting heat into the product and the egg and sugar will thicken up together which makes
9:56 am
the base. so that's thick. see how that is? nice and silky, smooth. so now we'll put this over ice to l cool it. not only cools, but it keeps the aeration in it, keeps it fluffy. we'll pit it over ice for about 30 seabeds and then we're going to fold in the new role a and the whip cream. here's our new tell you new tell a. you can see the new tell a thickance it up as well and it's nice and cock lately and dark. look at those ribbonsment now we have the new tell a combined and now what we'll do is we'll fold in some whipped cream. you can see i'm using the whisk to fold it in because the cream is whipped and you want to keep that aeration which keeps it light. that's it. that's the new role stab even i
9:57 am
much let's assemble it. got the waffle into fours or how many other pieces you like. at the restaurant this is how we do it. i shingle them off each other and now we'll take the new reel a stab known yea and now mare nate it. the berries and sugar. that's the dish. i'm chef lieu 358 dean owe of lieu pal dean owes on pass young. and that was this week's fox food bite. thank you and to chick i and piece and to rita's and to tasty cake. we're devouring them. thank you for spending your saturday with us. we appreciate it. have a wonderful day and of we appreciate it. have a wonderful day and of course we'll see you tomorrow
