weekend, taking advantage after a tragedy. major airlines under fire for price gouging. who's taking aim. plus, the owner of a popular philly restaurant, busted for child born. the disgusting details he allegedly told undercover agents. >> squeal piggy squeal, i hope that he dies. >> an 11-year-old boy reads comments taunting him. someone noticed. good morning, and welcome to fox 29 weekend. this is already the last weekend in july, bill anderson.
8:01 am
>> aw, man. you throw that out there summer is ending quickly. but it will be a great weekend and a great show. >> absolutely it will be. let's get a check of our forecast. we'll get dave warren to do what they do during the week. i would like a 10 today. >> 10. that is the number. our scale goes to 10. not quite the high end of the scale here. we've had a skrech of just very, very comfortable weather days here with low humidity and no rain. that's the plus today. no minuses. can't find anything wrong with today. this will be the last day though. we are at the end of july here. it will start to feel like the end of july soon. that humidity comes back. no rain there, ultimate doppler is all clear, nothing approaching anywhere. we're keeping it dry today. look at these temperatures, the differences between the i-95 corridor and the surrounding suburbs. you get that big temperature difference between the city and the suburbs. it's just a little warmer to the
8:02 am
south. but the temperatures along the coast will barely climb above 70 degrees today. we have a nice sea breeze developing. it will climb into the upper 80s here inland and even the north and western suburbs climbing above 80. we ever not quite at 90. by noon we're above 80 degrees. by this afternoon, 5:00, 89. close to 90. there's a number of 90s in the 7-day forecast so i'll look at that coming up just a little bit later. >> it's actually 8:02 and in our headlines this morning, people are remembering a woman who died too soon tragically killed when a car jacked suv slammed into them a year ago today. they were simply selling fruit and vegetables on a fruit corner to raise money for their church.
8:03 am
>> reporter: it is so hard to believe that it's been a year since this horrific case, even harder to believe that this peaceful corner was once the scene of wreckage in which those three children and their mother were allegedly mowed down into the memorial mural here which marks the spot where they were allegedly run down by two men as police say they car jacked and sexually assaulted a real estate agent. a young family selling fruits and vegetables to raise money for their church. a memorial will be held here starting between 11:00 and 12:30 today a cookout to celebrate their family and to remember them. they want to stress that it's open to the public in much the same way the community came together in response to the alleged murders. people here want to capture that same spirit.
8:04 am
you will remember of course this a case that very deeply resonates with people here. events begin between 11:30 and noon. we want to mention the suspects each charged with numerous counts including murder and sexual assault. a year later their case is still winding its way through the pretrial phase. >> there's an arrest rocking the philadelphia restaurant scene. the co-owner of a popular rittenhouse square is facing child pornography charges. police say he attempted to set
8:05 am
up and have sex with a nine-year-old girl. >> police have just released this sketch this week of a guy they say groped a 12-year-old girl in the water earlier this month. the child was in the water with a friend when she said the man touched her thigh and minutes later swam behind her and grabbed her inappropriately. investigators do not believe this was an accident because witnesses allegedly told them the water was not crowded at the time. it is 8:05. a former maintenance man is charged with killing a drexel university graduate. he broke into an apartment thursday and raped, beat and strangled her. they do have fingerprint and dna evidence to proof it. he had recently been fired from his maintenance job. police say he has a wrap sheet a mile long. >> he is 56 years of age.
8:06 am
he's got 31 priors. back in '82 he was arrested for killing his own father. he was arrested several times for sexual assault, several robberies, several burglaries, he's a monster. >> a motive not known. neighbors would like to know how he had keys to get into the building a week after being fired. >> philadelphia police are looking for clues that might lead them to a killer. richards was gunned down friday morning. police say richards was shot 12 times. family members say richards has never had any trouble with the law. they say he just finished school and recently got a job as a trucker. >> why, we're still trying to figure out. no drugs, he wasn't a drug dealer. it was jealousy, i could see that. somebody jealous. >> no weapon was recovered at
8:07 am
the scene and so far there have been no arrests. hi, i'm bruce gordon. this week mass transit in the form of septa got a test for the visit of pope francis. to say it did not go well would be like describing the atlantic ocean as "moist." it was an epic fail. their website set up a special regional rail passage has been thoroughly tested but just moments after the launch, the site crashed. we were overwhelmed. the expectation was that the bugs would be quickly worked out and that sales of those passes might resume by mid week.
8:08 am
but soon came word that the whole sales process is now under reevaluation and that everything is on hold until next week. my take? over and over again we have heard mayor nutter describe philadelphia as the big city that does big events. and so, and look i know we're still two months out, we seem to have come up pretty small. the septa screw-up is only part of the problem. with so little solid information having been released to the public, all kinds of reports are floating around that suggest a city in grid lock that suggest the mess may out weigh of excitement of getting to see the pope. it's led to speculation that the city will be locked down for hours on end. but the folks in charge keep telling us calm down that everything will be worked out in time. maybe it will. somebody as selling passes on a website can go so wrong so fast
8:09 am
despite so many assurances, all i can say is, pray for us. only in philly. i wish i had better news coming out of only in philly, keeping with that theme, $500,000 a year, that's how much septa is paying a company who built the now-failed website. >> it's not a problem for everybody, because patco is not having an issue. they've reported no problems selling their special passes for the papal visit. they're selling one-day and two-day passes. only four stations in new jersey will be open. passengers will have to get off at ninth and locust in philadelphia. and there's more information as the visit is released in drips and drabs. we've put it on our app which is
8:10 am
really handy. you can download it on your smart phones and we'll post things there. coming up, mixed martial arts, it's all about the belt. the intense workout these aspiring champions go through. speaking of intense workouts, it's time to sweat.
8:11 am

8:13 am
welcome back. was that price gouging after that amtrak crash? train travel was suspended for five days after that crash which killed eight people was being investigated and cleaned up. so a lot of commuters had to fly and many of them paid much higher prices. there was one senator who saw a fare as high as $2300. people have been talking about this one on social media. we've got a lot of comments. it's about time dot took too long to look into this one. airlines are taking advantage of the tragedy. it is pathetic. donald says of course they did. corporate greed is at play. and supply and demand it's the way business works. joining us this morning we have fred tici breaking us down. >> it's hard to say whether o. not it's illegal.
8:14 am
what the law is they can't engage in unfair or deceptive trade practices. they obviously didn't engage in deceptive trade practices. from a public relations side, i think the relations are going to end up looking at this. it's a law of supply and demand unfortunately. the demand in the northeast for the airlines and it's done by a computer algorithm and they know how many people are checking on and who's trying to get fares and you know what it's like on an airline. you can be paying $150 for your seat and the person next to you can be paying 2,000 for theirs. so it's almost like a quagmire. i guess dot is going to weigh into it but i think it's going to be a tough thing to show. >> we do have laws in the books you're not allowed to price gouge after an event. southernly after hurricane sandy, there were gas stations who got in trouble for spiking their prices. there was a shortage, but they were not allowed to do that. >> that's because there was a
8:15 am
consumer protection law that was applicable there. price gouging -- people throw around the word "price gouging," you're talking about antitrust violations. i can tell you there's a lot of things that go into it. because you're talking about markets like philadelphia, it's washington, it's new york, it's boston and let's go back. i'm not trying to defend these guys. i think they should have offered fares for people who were stranded as a result of it, this was a horrible tragedy, my heart breaks for the families of the victims. i get all this, and quite frankly, so should they have. but you're asking me if you've ever seen the lady who holds the scales of justice and she's blind folded and she's supposed to be blind folded for things like emotions. >> thank you for breaking it down for us. >> thank you have a great
8:16 am
weekend. >> let us know what you think about this. use our hashtag #fox29weekend. >> chris christie is criticizing amtrak because of problems with new jersey transit. the two agencies share tracks in new jersey but amtrak owns them. new jersey transit pays amtrak about $100 million a year to use the rail lines. as we can see it's time to take a look or take you in focus. and this morning it's all about mixed martial arts. >> where is my belt? >> you must go find that one. >> you talk for a minute. >> bill loves mixed martial arts. he's really darn good. >> there he goes. he's got it. >> so you see inside the octagon. what happened, our own bill rohr
8:17 am
decided he wanted to find out what was going on. he went, checked it out, did some training, is going to tell us what you have to do. >> reporter: in the octagon one of the fastest growing sports is mixed martial arts you come to the ufc. >> i think it's popular because there's a number of ways to finish a fight. it could be a knockout with a hand, an elbow, a knee, a kick. >> reporter: to get to the ufc, you start training at a place like balance studios in center city philadelphia. your coach a fifth degree black belt. >> you're looking for easiest technique of someone who may be bigger, stronger, faster, meaner. jiu jitsu allows you to fight on your feet and on the ground.
8:18 am
>> i'm really interested in technical stuff, being a computer scientist. if you understand the technical details you get a lot out of it. >> reporter: as you move up the ranks you get to spar. >> the ufc is the olympics of mixed martial arts. no matter who the person is in other organizations, that's where they want to go. >> reporter: and to get to that level, you have to be that level of athlete. you have to be coachable, you have to work out. have you to have a huge work ethic. >> reporter: jiu jitsu is one of many styles you need to fight in the ufc. kickboxing is also popular. dino has been training for about a year and a half. >> it's a two and a half hour course, this is the advanced
8:19 am
class, and to be here you really have to realize that you're going to get punched in the face and you're going to get knocked down. >> reporter: no matter what your fighting style, they encourage you to give it a try. you never know who could be the next ufc champion. >> of course if you're a mixed martial arts fan, we've got the preliminary fights and at 8:00 it's ufc fight night. of course that's all followed by fox 29 news at 10:00. >> you actually met your girl doing this kind of activity. >> i did in fact put my business out in the street. for about six years i trained mixed martial arts. i know a little about getting hit in the face but when i came to work with you it didn't go over very well. make sure you're watching and
8:20 am
i'm never giving this belt back. >> i had a girl i worked with who was a producer she used to do it and she would get black eyes and stuff. >> yes. that was fine when i was working in radio. when i started transitioning into tv, not so much. >> here's the thing. that could be a good test. what a grip firm handshake could mean morning being business savvy. >> we're going to tell you what that handshake tells you about your overall health. >> overall health looks good. the weather is great today. if you're heading outside, do a little dance. it's national dance day and the temperatures are climbing up to 90 degrees. nice again for one more day. changes are on the way. i'll have that coming up.

8:24 am
>> i taught him everything he knows. >> does he have a mohawk? >> it varies from day to day. >> send us your videos. next, the trend. >> good morning, i'm alex holly. >> and i'm chris murphy. and this is "the trend." >> this summer really is the summer of the shark. and one couple in north carolina, well, they aren't taking any chances. >> all those sightings. take a look at this video. the couple walked into the ocean with home made cages. this happened in the outer banks. as you can see, they don't get
8:25 am
very far before the lifeguard brings them back in. >> and now we've learned it was all a joke. the couple did it just so they could take a picture for a post card in the ocean. >> this next story involves a little bad blood between nicki minaj and taylor swift. nicki received two nominations however she felt she deserved one for video of the year. >> if your video celebrates women with slim bodies then you will be nominated for video of the year. >> and taylor replied. i've done nothing to support you. it's unlike you to pit women against each other. and taylor said if i win please come on stage with me. >> blah, blah, blah. can't we all get along? >> you would think.

8:55 am
what you want to do is squeeze the tail and remove the lobster meat. take the claws apart. what i like to do is push the meat out with my finger. we get a live lobster and boil it for eight minutes. maine lobster, fresh. get the claw out of the shell, hit it with my knife. trying to push the meat out. the only thing you have to wash -- watch for is a piece of cartilage. you chop it as big or as small as you like. i like nice big pieces. you get more of the lobster taste and it doesn't get mixed with the mayonnaise too much. and i don't put a whole lot of ingredients in to begin with because i like the taste of lobster. it's about one pound of meat from three 1 1/2 pound lobsters. i like to chop the celery nice
8:56 am
and fine. we're going to chop it as thin as we can get it. next we're going to add it to the lobster salad, i like to cut the end off and i chop them as small as i can also. we're looking for about a quarter cup of chopped chives. you can use scallions if you want or skip them all together. next we're going to add a quarter cup mayonnaise. then some lemon. the next stop will be to add salt and pepper to taste. and because the lobster affairly salty itself you don't need to add salt. once we have the ingredients in the bowl we're going to mix it. we're going to be checking to make sure we have enough mayonnaise. in this case i think we have the perfect amount. a little butter in a frying pan, give it a minute or two to melt.
8:57 am
take a roll. these are brioche rolls which are my favorite. we're going to leave the roll on there until it's golden brown. now that it's starting to get brown and toasty, i'm going to flip it over and get the other side for just a minute or two. now the only thing left to do is to assemble the sandwich. about 7 ounces of salad on the roll, put it together. we're going to cut it in half. put it on the plate. now it's time to taste. perfectly toasted roll, fresh lobster flavor and you can take the lemon. i'm chef jamie hollander and this has been your fox food bite.
