because we've had all of this rain. we've got teen coverage right now of this storm as we take a look outside at center city. lots of fog, we know we've got a lot of flooding down at the beach. we have sabina at the shore and we have dave warren what's happening on our heads. >> we're seeing a break from that steady rain has moved out. we won't be completely dry today, the temperatures will cool off a bit, 40s, to 50s to 60s. a little cool this morning and that wind continues to gust out of the northeast. 51 in philadelphia, it's stayed there here since yesterday. it may climb a few degrees. upper 50s, close to 60 to the south right along the coast. there's that steady rain. it's pushed north. just spotty showers now.
8:02 am
it will continue, not completely dry today but not that soaking rain that we've had. coming in from the ocean, some light rain across portions of burlington and ocean county, that's moving right across the parkway now. steady rains move out but catered shores continue throughout the day today. next big problem is that wind and it will continue to gust today. northeast wind piling that water up in the back bay, so coastal flood warning continues. the next high tide could be a little higher. joaquin, the latest track is coming up a bit later. >> when i was down the shore this week, we already had some power lines down. peco is reporting 964 without power, pse&g just under 60, there's under 900 there and

8:05 am
news because of a series of meetings that weren't publicized while he was here in the united states. this story has developed as the week went along. at first it seemed the pontiff was getting involved in a political argument after word surfaced that he met with kim davis, the kentucky clerk who went to jail for refusing to issue same sex marriage licenses. that had people saying the pope supports her position. but the vatican says people shouldn't read too much into it. that it was a brief meeting, the pope was not taking a stand. the pope only granted one private audience in washington, d.c. to a former student of his who is openly gay and his long-time partner. you're seeing the video that they posted of the meeting to youtube. social media has been all over this for the past week. a lot of these comments came from my own fox 29 facebook page. emanuel says this changes his opinion of the pope. he writes the woman is crazy.
8:06 am
he basically gave her a worldwide platform to spread her crazy beliefs. i don't have an issue with the pope on this because i know his position on this which is the catholic church's position. and if indeed he did meet with kim davis which i think was a terrible thing to do, i'm sure this pope stuck to his belief. who am i to judge. so a lot of comments, a lot of background information. we want to try to get through it. a doctor of sociology at drexel university who studies religion and the catholic church joins us. doctor, a lot going on in this whole scenario, trying to weave through all this? what's your take? >> our country is divided across liberal and conservative at the moment, as we know. traditional catholic teaching doesn't coincide with those categories very neatly so that on social issues like equality
8:07 am
and poverty, the traditional catholic teaching is very liberal. it's much more conservative on issues of gender ond sexuality. so we're looking at what the pope is doing from our own perspective. >> it's interesting that you say that, because this pope has been labelled as the open-minded liberal pope. but you point out his views are pretty much in line with the catholic church. so are our expectations too high in expecting him to be something he's not? >> this pope, if you look at liberal catholic perspective, was something very different in his emphasize in catholic social teaching which was all there on all the previous popes as well and not so emphasized by francis. i think expectations among the liberals were very high, conservatives were dismayed. and when word of this meeting came out, i think that it really
8:08 am
took people by surprise and didn't know what to do with it. >> i'm going to ask you to speculate just a little bit here, because kim davis went public with this meeting. the vatican then pushes back. duped may be a harsh word, but was the pope misled in what he may have been doing in meeting with or just addressing her? >> well, i think that none of us, including kim davis's lawyers were there so we can't really say what happened. there's a lot of controversy even within the catholic church over the way things should be going -- i don't think -- i wouldn't necessarily say the pope was duped. it's just unclear, particularly after yesterday what's come out about the incident yesterday, how much the pope knew about what this meeting was about and how it was arranged and who arranged it.

forecast. >> there is some events going on and i had one question sent in, we'll look at that in a second because they had to change their plans a little bit. events still happening but we still have rain across the area. there's the wind, the clouds, hurricane joaquin moving towards bermuda now. just some rain coming through the area, this will be continuing to push to the north as that strong wind continues out of the northeast. steady rain though, this is what was here yesterday, it has moved north and out of the area. so if you do have an event, not completely dry, but hey, it's still some problems here. here's one that came in from new jersey. >> hi, i'm sharon from the collingswood book festival. >> you know what it's going to be like because you changed your
8:20 am
plans already. it's still happening if you're out there, look at the temperatures staying about the same. out of the northeast, we cannot get a break from this wind and that is what is causing all the problems down the shore. these current wind gusts are into the 40s now and that's pretty much where they stay. that causes the problem here with the coastal flooding. the next high tide about noon and every other high tide is a little higher. this is the gauge, last high tide a little lower but because of all the forces which these tidal forces, these could be a little higher and the trend still going up because that wind just piles up. this is stone harbor of a moderate close to major flooding happening with this next high tide which will be at noon along the coast a little later in the back bays. so watching that closely there is some relief with that wind direction in the 7-day forecast.

broil. it's a flank steak, it comes from the butt of the cow. it's a great piece of meat. i actually marinated it in italian dressing. take the meat and put it in the dressing. i added rosemary, chopped garlic, kosher salt. very simple procedure. a quarter pound of butter. our butter is almost melted, add onions, mushrooms and a little bit of paprika for a little bit of color. mix it all up a little bit and this should take 5 or 6 minutes. you want the onions translucent or clear and you want the mushrooms a little bit brown.

hurricane joaquin here, category 3, 125 mile an hour winds and the latest track continues to keep it off the coast. it might bend a little to the north, still around an area of low pressure here, but just slightly north and rapidly moving to the northeast as far north as philadelphia there. 40 degrees north and it will weaken into the north atlantic. could be a threat to bermuda, certainly watching this as it continues to move north. wind gusts over 30 miles per hour now. these are current wind gusts, close to 40, that direction and speed is key. it's been like this a while. and will continue like this today. that water just piles up and you'll get higher and higher high today. every other high tide just a little higher and this next one could be the highest so far. that could be moderate to major flooding, a little major in the back bays.

high pressure giving us that northeast wind, the moisture being spun up from the south. some of this is coming up from hurricane joaquin here, that plume of moisture, we're not seeing the steady rain like we've had. the 7-day forecast, there is relief. here comes the dry air. monday and tuesday. a little better than that wind direction changes and the wind dies down so better end to the 7-day forecast compared to the beginning, still windy both today and tomorrow. >> we've been talking about education for quite some time, and more changes could be on the way for philadelphia schools. earlier this week the superintendent announced a proposal that would include closures, new schools and more charters. the $20 million plan would affect 12 schools and 5,000 students. the commission has to approve the changes and public hearings must be held. but parents are already reacting to the announcement. sofia tweeted maybe philadelphia education should actually fix

their schools instead of closing or replacing them constantly. this is insane. on facebook gary writes the city doesn't have an income issue, they have a spending issue. the money is not going to the right places. corruption and poor money management has always been the problem. this comment was posted in response to an online article. the schools are costing too much to operate and have dwindling attendance. i hate to say it but the catholic schools got it right. they've been closing down under attended schools for over ten years. so now to flesh it out and get deeper into the discussion, solomon jones. good morning, sir. >> good morning, bill. how are you? >> i'm great. hope you are as well. we hear about education, and the need for reform. a lot of times people agree. the question is where are we getting $20 million to do this? >> exactly. that's the question i asked on my show yesterday and he said the changes aren't going to be coming this year. it's going to be spent next

year. but i think when you really look at this, 23 school buildings and 24 schools overall closed in 2013. and a lot of those buildings remain vacant. i think there are better uses and better strategies frankly for our schools. when the community was asked what should happen to two schools in their communities in 2014, they chose for those schools to remain district schools rather than charter schools. this time around the superintendent told me these schools are going to be charter schools rather than district schools. people feel like they don't have a say in this and that is a big a problem as any. >> we keep kicking it down the road. at some point do we just have to bite the bullet? >> i think that you have to give the community some input. i think right now this is feeling like something that's being rammed down the

community's throat. frankly i have a child in a philadelphia public school, a lot of other parents are very concerned about this, and i told the sucht superintendent that as a parent i'm concerned. i'm concerned there's less accountability with charter schools. they're overseen differently than regular district schools. so just giving them money without that accountability i think is a mistake. i think they need the money, but i think they need greater accountability and greater answerability to the community. >> i think both of us have the discussion why now. if this was your plan. >> if you have questions or comments you can post them on our facebook page or tweet us just use our hashtag #fox29weekend. let's check in with jen fred. >> hey everybody. you know i love to tell you what the heck the kids are saying. new words and stuff.
