9:04 am
around 10:00 last night. the fire was put out, but it started up again at least twice. everyone inside got out safely and no word yet on what caused the fire. we've been talking about what you're thankful for. we've been talking about getting prepared for the thanksgiving holiday and supermarkets will likely be mobbed today, but you won't see some important action going on. volunteers are preparing baskets for those in need today. our own jennifer joyce is live in south philadelphia as they get prepared. it's a great thing that they're all doing. it's so l cool, though, and it's really neat to see this firsthand. we have about 100 volunteers. they're taking to the assembly line. they're going to be putting baskets together for 2,000 family families, those who need it. can you talk a little bit about this. tell me a little bit about what's going into these baskets
9:05 am
and why you do what you do. we have been doing this for 3 # years and we are feeding families who are most in need in the most dignified way that you can. we have identified 80 groups. they know their neighbor, people in their community who are in need. we put these baskets together, a great turkey with all the sides, potatoes as you can see, greens, stuffing, everything that you're going to have on your table we're going to make sure that people who are really in need have a great thanksgiving, too. let's take a walk down. you're with the urban affairs coalition, yes, i am. you said all of these sides were donated by vendors who work with browns shoprites? >> exactly. they provide all of the sides every year, jeff and sandy get out and talk to their vendors and they aokay, we'll make this our thanksgiving contribution and then we go out and raise money to buy the turkeys. guess how much money they had to
9:06 am
raise? they had to raise $30,000 for all of these turkeys to feed 12,000 people. what an accomplishment that is. last year you sent out 1,000 baskets. you doubled your efforts. >> we doubled. we challenged ourselves. we finished last year and we said we know that we can challenge ourselves. we can do more because we know the need is out there. we have so many people that call us and say please can you help people in our community. so we said okay. we are going to do it. >> we are going to do it. the urban affairs coalition works with about 80 organizations so they have a list of families who could use this basket. challenge number one was doubling their efforts, challenge number two is going to happen right now. can you tell us a little bit about that. we have two sets of teams who are going to put together a thousand baskets. this is an assembly line. these are volunteers. these are people who are not trained. marie, our great general from browns family shoprite is giving
9:07 am
everyone instructions, but they're going to then sort of put everything in baskets and we're going to time it and we're hoping that we can get 1,000 done under 58 minutes. > we love it. before we go can people donate for this cause? we are still raising money for the. 41444 and then type in give the number to uac faith. put in your amount, hit send, done. there's more information on the website. >> more information on the website. if you go to testing right into our website as well. we're going to post that on our website as well. if you go to fox 29.com. you'll find all the information there. when are these deliveries going out. >> on monday. we have another team of volunteers that are going to be here on monday to give the baskets to our 80 groups and organizations when they come in. >> i love it. thanks forgetting in touch here.

reporting live in south philadelphia, i'm jennifer joyce, fox 29 news. > i'm superintendent michael chipwood with a video that is beeping me off this week. video captured inside a middle school science class shows a seventh grader. you can see punches pushing and shoving. it all started when people were throwing paper around the classroom. the l school called the fight disturbing and is being investigated. when i looked at this video, the first thing i see is an ugly incident inside a classroom. when you look at a classroom in an american school system, classrooms are supposed to be places to learn and not fightingment when you see a teacher and a student hailing punches, rushing and shoving and
9:09 am
punching one another, it's absolutely disgraceful. however, by viewing the video we don't know what the causation factor is. is an adult allowed to hit a student? does a child have a right to hit a teacher? and that's what is being investigated. it's really, really keshaing. the unfortunate thing in our education system in america today you see more and more of these type incidents. it's like a street corner and not a learning environment. > i'm superintendent michael chipwood, that's my take. coming up, thanksgiving is less and week away and that means lots of family time. so we've got the tips to help you avoid the drama. plus, what's in your meet, the added ingredient that doctors say could be detrimental to your health.

> 9:12 welcome back to fox 29 weekend. holidays are fast approaching and for better or worse that means lots and lots of time with our families. we love them, but they can be the source of a lot of drama as well. read from these tweets that people are sending in. the good thing about my family not celebrating thanksgiving is that there's no family drama and stress eating. aka i'm not gaining any weight over break. this one, the best l holidays
9:13 am
are the stress free ones, that's why we stay at home on thanksgiving and avoid all family obligations. it doesn't need to be vesselful. joan ma rye whalen is the lover of love, heel, fulfill, the gift of knowing you, right. >> yes. > she joins us with some tips. don't throw them in the fire. warm and make us feel -- is it really that much stress going on at the holidays? >> i think during the holidays it brings up your issues when you had some issues when you were a child with your siblings, the five year old wants to come out and fight again. people take things personally with your family. your mother could be saying i love you, but she says you've put on a little weight. that's her weight way of saying i care about you and your health. we tend to take things personally and our family doesn't always get to see that.
9:14 am
is it family speak? is there a whole different language that we need to learn to interpret? >> yes, there isment i think the key for all us, is that we were born into the families we have, lover them or not. get the lessons, understand why they are in your life. adoor them and understand them for who they are. when you're going through a battle zone with your own family, i say every night, say some good t things about yourself. go to bed honoring you, because when you pump yourself up, your family members want to tease you, joke with you, you won't take it so personally. >> i can do that. > there's a lot of families and we all have our different rolls. >> some would say i'm kind of the piece keeper or the problem l somer in the family. > of course. >> should we push aside the roles or do the rolls get you in trouble. >> the rolls get you in trouble if somebody is angry at you for
9:15 am
playing that role. >> sometimes they might say i don't need you to solve my problems, i just want you to listen to me. i just want you to be okay with the fact that i'm a train wreck and i'm going down the wrong road, but it's what i want to do right now. sometimes we disagree with people, but we need to listen to them and honor them for what they are. the family doesn't mean you any harm. >> exactly. we take them so personally. i think the key for all of us is to heal the emotions in our body. if we heal the emotions, then your future could be different. it could be healthier, you don't have to fight all the time. our families aren't our enemies, but so many times people think they are. > good enough. >> we got through this entire discussion without calling out our crazy families. > right. we have a few. >> that's the one spot behind us. > i appreciate it. >> tomorrow on fox 29 weekend

what you can do for yourself during the holidays. we're going to talk about this, pump yourself up, internalize yourself. we're going to t talk about that on the show. >> looking forward to it. > thank you very much. let's take a look at the weather. we've been talking about events going on in the area. we've been talking about a little bit brisk. dave tells us we'll be able to hold on and hang in there. wilmington, delaware looks pretty good, what's going on over there. >> my sheet is over there. i think there is a tree festival. > a world cafe life and there's a grilled cheese and craft beer tasting. >> that's even better and tree festival. > craft beer and grilled cheese festival in wilmington, perfect weather for that. a great combination, too. down center city here in philadelphia, you have the christmas village starting up here in love park. a little chill in the air, but a nice start for that. 45-degrees in philadelphia, up to the 40-degree mark in allentown. reading is at 47.
9:17 am
millville is at 45 degrees. it's climbed up just a bit. trying to climb up just about 50-degrees. today that will be the warm day. it gets even colder tomorrow. ultimate doppler is clear. but let's go to future weather and show you. we have clouds increasing, by 7:00 the clouds will increase tonight. if you're out late enough, after midnight, 1, 2:00 tonight, nothing good happens after 2, so make sure you're home by then, there will be some rain coming around. the rain tlears out by tomorrow morning. it is even colder. a quick warmup today, 30s, 40s and 50s is about where we stop. we drop tonight only into the 40s. the rain is coming through tonight. no question it will be all rain. don't worry about a freeze. temperatures will be fairly mild and they drop as the colder air comes in. likely dropping into the 30s. upper 40s tomorrow morning, a little warmer, not quite as cold, but by monday morning, then you see that chill in the air.
9:18 am
sunny and 50s degrees, 53 with a few clouds and then we're at 49 dropping down to 49-degrees overnight tonight. that's about where we'll stay. cold temperatures in the seven day forecast. we'll see what that means for the short holiday week coming up in just a little bit. a bit faulty. your chance to be a little bit naughty at the academy of music. we do want to note the academy of music is a sponsor of the broadway matilda in town based off the best selling book. so many people are already talking about the show on social media. you're getting a little taste of it and what they're coming on. chase tweeted i need to go see matilda while it's in piloti. another person tweeted i want to see matilda in philly.

9:21 am
someone who isn't familiar with the story. what is it if you were going to bring your family out right now. >> i think it's a story about a young girl who is struggling to change her world for the better. it's about standing for what she believes in and also for imagination, and the value of that in the life of young people. sometimes it's something that we sometimes don't value. we cut programs for arts and for music and stuff like that. i think this is a really good thing for young people to see. that sort of imagination in story telling is important because it allows you to shape your own world. i think it's really great. the kids love theville ands, too. they laugh at the villians. a wonderful show for the whole family. if you want to bring your own family, remember right now, matilda is running at the academy of music. it is going to run through

curious how those as yourself respond, the discussion turns to giving up freedom, being searched more often, having cameras, so on and so forth. do you feel people are ready to do that or that paranoia goes too far? >> it's interesting because one of the things that deputy mayor gill son said and he's the deputy mayor for public safety, as well as the chief of staff, one of the things he said at sporting events there is beefed up security, they're looking at you a little bit closer than you think they are. maybe that's giving up freedom, but nothing has happened at these events. people have been critical of the fact that we've had this beefed up security, and nothing happened, and he said, and i have to agree, thats that's the bottom line. beefed up security is keeping us save. you can listen to solomon 9:00 a.m. ward, monday through friday, check it out. let's check out our final look

at weather as we head out and enjoy what promises to be a beautiful day. this one right outside of our building. another huge crane out there. they're doing more work. people are starting to get out on the streets and looks like they're going to enjoy the day. they're working on that wells fargo building. the crane is back. it's into the 40s now. just about 50 this afternoon. so be patient. it's warming up slowly, but not a big warmup expected. only into the mid to low 40s right now. climb above 50. we'll stay in the upper 40s. if you're out this evening, it is dry now, but there is some snow and rain over the midwest that will work its way overnight tonight. raise weekend, 50 at 5:00 a.m., 48 at 7:00 a.m. 49, 11 a. it stays right about upper 40ss and 50s maybe dropping a degree two just after sunrise as the cooler air starts to work its way in.

the rain clears out, there it is right about midnight, by noon it's gone, but we're getting that cold air coming in. the clouds, the rain overnight tonight keep the temperatures dropping too much, but then it really drops tomorrow despite sunshine and by the time we get to monday morning, it is a very, very cold start. we're into the 50s today. 50s tonight, 44 by tomorrow morning. it drops a little bit, just after sunshine and then claims into the upper 40s. by # 1:00 tomorrow night, 35-degrees, by monday morning, it's into the 30s and 0s every where. so a colder afternoon and evening, maybe warm in the morning, but the eagles game, the temperature will be dropping into the upper 30s by the evening. a cold start monday and tuesday. by wednesday and thursday, the holiday t here we're getting a little warmer. not too bad thursday, 40 up to 60. 42 up to # 63-degrees with clouds increasing. just a very, very cold start to this short workweek with the holiday coming up.

starting off at 30, but 20s in the surrounding suburbs, grab the winter codes. time now for knocking the king. hi, howard, i heard what you had to say about notre dame, here's why you're wrong. give me one good reason why notre dame is number four? i'm okay with top three, clemson, alabama and ohio state, but as i speak notre dame has not beaten one top 25 team. temple was, but is no longer. iowa, oklahoma state with better schedules and more wins not there. one simple reason, notre dame would draw more monday because of who they are. we had beaten the top five teams, both navy and usc are in the top 25. also, look at the schedule, notre dame's schedule is better than both oklahoma or ohio. notre dame doesn't play any sf.
9:53 am
how many wins does oklahoma state have, maybe one. i'm not positive 6789 notre dame schools play all with winning records. we have a tougher schedule. we are almost dead even. if p you get three points for a home field advantage we really rank higher than clemson so that's why notre dame ought to be in the top four. > let me break the news to you. you win when you score more points and when you lose less points. am i getting that right? didn't notre dame lose that game at clemson? weren't they down by about 14 points in the fourth quarter when clemson tried to sit on the lead and that's what allowed notre dame to come back doesn't undefeated mean something? iowa, oklahoma state both undefeated and yet notre dame plays a real tough schedule. notre dame doesn't play in a conference. darn. and the other teams do.
9:54 am
my mistake because that would really make it tougher if they played in a conference. that's the problem. their greed should cost them because they won't go in a conference because they want the cash all to themselves. don't give me all that nonsense. when they played notre dame, when they played navy and usc they did not play 25 teams because they weren't in there then. let me just break the news to you. undefeated is always better than the team that loses. is that simple enough for you? i'm trying to help you. i know you love notre dame. > back to the haven. think you have what it takes to knock the king. shoot us your video, sen it to us and i'll talk to you next week.
