♪ good morning everyone. welcome to "good day philadelphia" weekend. this morning on "good day philadelphia" a tragic end to a search for little boy with autism. the five-year-old found dead a short distance from where you he went missing in allentown. taking the turnpike about to hurt your wallet a little bit more. tolls a bit higher this morning and new technology could change the way you pay. there's an old saying you're never fully dressed without a smile. well it may be true a new study is no reason to grin. why scientists say our smiles aren't one of our best attributes. >> from the fox 29 studios, this is is "good day philadelphia" weekend. ♪ good morning, everyone. well bum to "good day philadelphia" weekend on a little bit chilly sunday

january 3rd. we are not karen and dave. >> no. >> karen and dave are off. much deserved days off i bill anderson. this is mike masco. good morning, sir. >> good morning. it's cold out there. >> little bit. >> i mean it's like one of those things it's a shock to the system. it just wax you around and look this isn't like one day, this is maybe three, maybe four day type cold deal, and maybe little wintery weather. we got to deal with it. >> tell us the details. >> poconos they want this stuff. we'll give you a lot of cold. live shot in old city, beautiful morning but looks a little deceiving, because there is a little bit of a wind out there. pretty cool conditions. look at the temperatures across the delaware valley most of our read that is are in basically into the 20s most locations it's a pair of threes in the city. you go north and we have it's really cold down into the low 20s. go into jersey we're looking around 30 degrees. 24 in jack you go down towards sea isle city it's 39. so really chilly morning. clear on the radar, however, you go all the way up towards the north, there is an arctic front

this arctic front will blow in here later this afternoon, plummeting our temperatures and bringing some very cold air. in fact the coldest air of the season. let's say goodbye to sue sorry eighty seven sue? >> did you know that januar january 3rd is drinking draw day? oh, yes, weekend wendy knows and she is ready with her beverage and the straw and the mittens and the scarf because it has gotten a lot colder this weekend especially compared to christmas weekend when we had high temperatures in the upper 60s. well, for today, sunday it's going to be about 35 degrees, 45 degrees by 2:00 o'clock. and that will be our high temperature for the day as soon as it gets dark it gets cold and it's going to be about 39 degrees by 6:00 p.m. so enjoy yourself just make sure you bundle up. >> sue, i mean it's like a shock to the system. we got -- we really got spoiled but this cold air continuing to filter in. you know when it's cold it's getting down into the 30 noose memphis. first true connection with the

arctic air up towards the north. we'll talk more about the forecast coming up in a little bit. >> and it is -- thanks so much, mike. it's so cold i can't even talk. it's so cold that cumberland county, new jersey, is already issuing a cold blue for monday and tuesday nights. the county will provide warming centers from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. those centers are located at three churches, saint theresa in bridgeton, first united methodist in vineland and central baptist in millville. and a sad end to the search for a missing child with autism in allentown. police say the body of five-year-old jahlil vega was found by divers in a canal off the lehigh river saturday afternoon. not long after a volunteer had found vega's tablet nearby. his body was found about a quarter mile from where the little boy went missing late on new year's eve. police say the non-verbal child ran away from a party his parents were attending. search teams canvassed the area

for two days and nights. saturday several vigils sprung up across town and some community members questioned why dive teams didn't enter the water sooner. authorities say the timing was just coincidental. >> our dogs were starting to alert down there. we were beginning to organize a potential search effort and dive effort at that point in time and then shortly thereafter the tablet was discovered there. >> this is something that has touched allentown and everybody has gone to search. >> police believe his death was accidental and an autopsy is scheduled for monday. 8:04. we're following developing story out of philadelphia's kensington section. a man is killed in a shooting along the township hundred block of east birch street. this happened just after 4:00 this morning. police say a 33-year-old man was found in his car shot several times in the head. investigators say they found at least 15 shell casings and so far no arrests. happening now, it's a going

thing. we've all been celebrating that gas prices are so low. well that's one good thing it better be that's because now it will cost you more to drive along the pennsylvania turnpike and that's not the only change for drivers who use the toll road. fox 29's jennifer joyce is live near one of those turnpike toll plazas near plymouth meeting. johnny, say it saint so. not toll increases. >> reporter: i know unfortunately and it is something that we'll have to get used to and this year's toll hike is 6%. it's the same for both e-z pass users and cash customers. there will be annual rate increases threw 2044 we're told as the pennsylvania turnpike commissionaire constructs and expands the turnpike widening it from four lanes to six and making on the improvements. this hike in particular means e-z pass users will now pay 1.16 while cash customers will go $1.70 up to $1.80. pa turnpike also launching brand new technology this year for the

first time it will have cash less tolls. the first toll by plate program starts this month at the turnpike bridge over the delaware river in bucks county. e-z pass users aren't affected but if you don't have e-z pass, you'll essentially pay with your license plate. a camera will take a picture of your plate and bill you instead of drivers stopping to pay on the spot. they actually won't accept any money at this plaza so the turnpike commission says it will use this sight to test out the technology and see how it goes before further i supplementation. bill? >> keep us informed any more developments hopefully no more increases in the near future. 2016 is also expected to be the year septa launches its long awaited new payment system. septa key will allow people to pay for buses, subways and trains with a smart card. currently septa still uses tokens and exact change to pay fairs. officials with the 116-year-old mummers parade are

apologizing after a man was caught on individual shouting expletives about homosexual during friday's parade. >> bleep to gays. >> editor with the new york daily news shot that video and posted it to twitter as the finnegan nyb group walked by. that's the same group that has been receiving criticism for a comedy exit that mocked caitlyn jenner a man dressed as bruce jenner changed and appeared as caitlyn. there was picture of bruce on wheaties and caitlyn on a group of fruit loops. they offered an apology, >> the statement also goes on to say "the man in the daily news video is now banned from the

mummers. 8:07 we're taking a look at some of your national headlines this sunday morning. the raging mississippi river continues to threaten homes in the midwest. historic flooding has already claimed 22 lives and fox's matt fin reports. >> reporter: urgency officials here say there are now up to five breaches along the mississippi river and i want to show you this stunning visual behind me. this resilient family built their own levee along their property and it's working. it's keeping the mississippi river off of their land and to show you how effective their work is, in comparison, look at their neighbor. unfortunately, taking on several feet of water probably going to be a very large loss. across the street here what appears to be maybe a river or a lake is typically all dry land it's typically farmland now it's water as far as the eye can see. rivers, churches and businesses in the area are already underwater. illinois governor has been touring the state to assess the damage and to visit with flood victims. he is saying that the cold weather is adding to the concern

looking at airport. you can't help but think vacation, right? so many people have taken vacations. we're here. we're here with you. we're here for you. a vacation, that would be nice at some point soon. 8:13. welcome to "good day philadelphia" weekend. mexican lawyer ethan couch -- mexican lawyer for ethan couch says the so-called affluenza teen might seek asylum to avoid deportation back to the united states. right now, couch is spending his new year's weekend in the immigration holding facility which means he's in a common area eating and sleeping with the other detainees. he doesn't have a cell of his own. his attorney says it could take weeks, even months for the mexican legal system to play out. in the meantime, the attorney says he wants to make sure couch's rights aren't violated. >> we are not here to definitely into the past. we are here only to make sure that this young man is not mistreated according to mexican

constitution and human rights guarantees that he's afforded under it. >> couch's mother is in custody charged with fleeing with her son. if convicted she could spend up to 10 years behind bars. couch killed four people in a drunk driving crash but he used the affluenza defense and got off with only probation. those of you who don't know it means he was too entitled and led too much of a rich life to be the full consequences of his actions. old saying, you're never fully dressed without a smile. that may be true but as our own sue serio explains, our smiles may not actually be our best attribute. ♪ you heard the old saying, smile and the world smiles with you but a new silly study is nothing to grin over. it does sound silly. scientists actually have settle once and for all whether americans have better teeth than our cousins across the pond, the british.

remember, austin powers, have been fabulous advance in the field of dentist tee. >> what do you mean? >> his choppers were gag about bad british teeth. a group of british researchers joined a team from the united states to see if this was really a thing. their new research paper appears in the british medical journal and it's titled "austin powers bites back" a hint at what they found. here's dr. mike. >> in a new study contrary to popular belief, american teeth are actually worse than british teeth. the data now shows that we as americans are missing more teeth than the british. now, we also tend to have a greater disparity between dental health and those who have money and those who don't. this is greater here than it is in the uk. if you have bad teeth, you need to be aware that this can have negative impacts on your heart. it has to be to do with inflammation and the more

inflammation you have the more likely you are to have problems with your heart and overall health. >> oh, behave, dr. mike. your advice on brushing and flossing is definitely something to smile about. even if the study is a little silly. looking out at trenton, new jersey, the gold dome over the capitol building they say where trenton make the world takes. it doesn't look that bad. looks sunny. looks okay. mike tells us it's going get cold. >> yeah. i mean it's not bad. this morning certainly cold. but it's going to get much colder the next couple of days. we showe just showed you trento. let's to the philly side of things. lots of sunshine, cold feel out there. pair of threes in the city. north and west lehigh valley looking at 20s this morning. 24 degrees. look at that in allentown. 27 as you get into delaware. there's a little bit of a wind out there this morning. that's why we're talking about wind chill values into the 20s.

mount pocono the spot that feels like it's 17 degrees this morning. so there is some cold air to be found. this is an arctic front. now this is the strongest front that will cross the delaware valley all year bringing the coldest air mass this is what we call cross polar flow you take all the cold air over the polar region and bring it right south we are talking about that set up that's going to pan out over the next couple of days. see the snow showers trying to develop? maybe monday tomorrow afternoon maybe see a couple of snow showers out there. not going to be accumulating deal. lots of cold air across southern canada that will pour in our direction and really set up shop the next few days. so for today, look from the city points south and west that's going to be milder zone you get into the poconos lehigh valley going to be cold today. upper 30s and low 40s. then everybody is going to get into the cold action tomorrow. 34 degrees blustery winds, 34 feeling like it's into the 20s all day. stays cold on tuesday maybe a spot seventy four snow shower 34 degrees. we'll watch something brewing maybe by next weekend we'll talk

you have ripped athletes burning out right here. >> this is kind of like -- like i said, in terms of breaking the program down to what fits each person's capability we have like our advanced kind of program athletes going through some strength work. over here we have our beginner program. just doing some base core strength and, you know, agility work, box step ups building single leg strength as well over here our inter mediate program. >> i feel like i'm intermediate of jack of old trades per se people who are trying to build strength. and some cardio as we know it. metabolic conditions as well. >> abs are coming in. >> gymnastics called a wall climb. that's great for your core. and also some shoulder stability and strength and we have some burp tee box jump over. >> let me try this. >> there's the jump over, do the burpie part now, remember the bumpy. >> there you go. >> do the burpie part. >> that's okay. this is a wall climb. feet against the wall and a push up position lay down flat, good.

was planning a series of coordinated attacks at several major train stations using suicide bombers. the train stations were quickly shut down and evacuated as police secured the area and began searching for those responsible, more than 200 additional officers are patrolling the city streets this weekend. security officials say they quickly responded after receiving solid information about the planned attacks from foreign intelligence agencies. germany made a great dee seiss seive move with intelligence that came from not only the french and in the hours before but from the u.s. in the days before. it was a victory forger man authorities and really international cooperation in intelligence sharing. >> police is a have arrest add number of people who are suspected of being involved. meat plant in colorado fires 190 muslim employees after an alleged dispute about praying at work. it all allegedly started back in december when a group of 11 somalis want thing to pray at

the same time. there are reports saying a supervisor asked them to go in smaller numbers but the group reportedly went any way. then about 200 somali workers went on strike. not showing up for work for three days and that apparently led the cargill plant in fort morgan to fire all of the workers. cargill representative said it provides religious com days for all workers including a prayer room. still some muslims are upset with the company. >> they say this is a new poli policy. they used to let people pray for the last eight, nine years and now all of a sudden they said no. >> a company policy allows fired workers to reapply for their jobs after three months. that perhaps could be a resolution in this situation. on to you decide 2016 coverage. now in politics, there's less than a month to go until iowa caucuses. while hillary clinton continues to be the democratic front runner in iowa, republican front runner donald trump seems to be

a losing a little bit of his edge. fox' molly henneberg explains texas senator ted cruz with a slight lead over the real estate mogul. >> reporter: gop senator ted cruz is set to begin 36 county week long bus tore in iowa on monday. to try to build on his mow moan tum there before the februar february 1st caucuses. before christmas cruz took the lead in a few polls in iowa and now the real clear politics average of polls in that state has cruz leading donald trump about 3.6 points. >> that's why somebody like cruz able to talk openly, honestly and easily about his faith is resonating there. by the way you'll see in the next several weeks a group of evangelical leaders endorsing ted cruz. what's amazing is, that trump who let's face it there's never been accused of of being overly bias is still polling so well among evangelicals in iowa and beyond. and i think many evangelicals are a tractor to do trauma pops

strong leadership and beginning to leave trump may have the best chance to beat hillary clinton. cruz may be on top in the average of polls in iowa, but trump still has a commanding lead in national republican polls. the real clear politic poll avef some polls trump leading cruz by 15.5 points. trump has said he's preparing for major tv ad buy in iowa, new hampshire and south carolina possibly spending up to $2 million a week. meanwhile on the democratic side, hillary clinton appears to have a comfortable lead in iowa. the real clear politics average shows err by almost 13 points over senator bernie sanders. also, when it comes to money her campaign says it raised $37 million in the last quarter of 2015. sanders campaign put out its fundraising numbers for the last quarter of 2015 his campaign says it raised $33 million. and while clinton leads in iowa, sanders has just over a four-point lead in new hampshire in the average of polls. in washington, molly

see ale city 39 degrees. temperatures cold with a little bit of wind feeling like it's into the low 20s. wilmington feels like 22 degrees. nothing on major a lot of sun out there this morning. there's an arctic front now lying over buffalo and this is going to push off towards the south and the east. allowing for much colder air to come across the delaware valley. so again, temperatures into the 20s and 30s. but you go way to the north, and that's where we find some arctic air. look at this. oh, boy. we'll talk more about how long this sticks around maybe even some snow chances details coming up. sounds good. snow chances i'll take it. the fast nation with the new star wars movie doesn't appear to be dying down any time soon. coming up what the adventures in the galaxy far far away are doing for our economy right here on earth. ♪

buffalo. cold air lots of cold air coming right off north of the north pole. and that is going to set up shop as we get into the next several days. so temperatures today, this is actually going to be the mile defendant we're going to see in the next three. 44 in the city. come close to around 50 along the ac boardwalk. colder as you get up towards the poconos with temperatures into the 30s. here's your seven day forecast. blustery and cold for your day tomorrow. 34 degrees. but with that wind that's going to be cranking 25, 30 miles per hour going to feel like it's into the 20s. stays cold for tuesday, 34 degrees. it's 44 back by wednesday. seasonal sunshine and then we'll watch a pretty stormy pattern develop as we get into next week and look i think it will be a rain deal. the early portion of weeks end and may switch over to something beyond that. maybe a little wintry mix. so we'll talk more about that coming up in the days ahead but just know we have a stretch of some pretty weather as we go into the next several days. we haven't talked to mike jerrick yet. let's see what's going on with mike. >> keeping your home safe is not

all lit. >> this is a window alarm system that is under $15 and it comes with two sensors. that allow you to attach one to the fixed and one to the moving part and when they separate, an alarm will go off, that's a good one. >> it's awesome. >> that will wake up. >> you know there's a problem. >> you know somebody came in your house f you've got little kids it's also great especially when they want to wander in the pool or go outside and you don't know it. under $15. there's a full kit of those that come with a three pack and a door alarm. there's multiple options for that device. love little motion lights for inside your house. light a staircase, maybe you have basement stairs and the light doesn't turn on easily or it's at the bottom of the stairs. again, motion sensing led. battery operated. another great device is a water league alarm. now, that's not for your physical security but for your property security. you have a hot water heater that

leaks, off sump pump that's running over you can very $15 put an alarm in your basement and you'll know if you've got water damage coming. >> okay. >> save you thousands in the long run. >> absolutely. >> simple idea. but a dog bowl by your front entry and it makes people think you have a pet inside even if you don't. >> that is a great idea. >> how easy is that? >> with all this stuff -- >> this is always -- everybody has the stick in the door of the sliding glass door. >> yes. >> they're very easy to open if you don't have some type of barricade. you can go to home depot or lows and ask them to cut it to size for you. if you don't have a saw to do it on your own. and this one is awesome. this is an actual barricade that fits on the floor and this goes under the doorknob. and then no one can push the door in if they try to come in because it's jammed against the floor with a rubber pad down here. so if you really have security issues and concerns, you can spend under $30 for most of
